The cartoon in the latest issue of the Sunday Nation portraying the Tanzanian press worshipping President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, which has kicked up quite a storm in Dar-es-salaam was penned by a cartoonist called Gado.
The one fascinating fact that all the sites commenting on this issue so far have missed is Gado's nationality. He is a Tanzanian. This is getting really interesting.

This is a true example as to how Kenya embraces foreigners. GADO is our own bwana. The other day `they kicked out Rwandan refugees, but that was not enough, they confiscated all their belongings at chased them away empty handed.
Every day they imprison Somali refugees fleeing their country on their way to Southern Africa citing insecurity, BTW Tanzania is just a transit poit of Somalians. Listen to me Tz, Poverty is insecurity, Aids is insecurity, 12hour powercuts for Two months is insecurity, chasing away investors is insecurity, SCAVEGING REFUGEES BELONGINGS IS STUPIDITY. Kenya has more than half of all refugees from Somali and most live in Nairobi estates like normal citizens, but when it comes to insecurity we clamp on the thugs not Law abiding Human Being.

Whether Gado is A Tanzanian or not does not matter to me. I was taught by Kenyan, Ugandan, Sudanese, Irish, English and Asian teachers throughout my primary and subsequent levels. This is a globalised village we live in. Why should these Tz fellows be so insular? It's basic logic, how much goodwill and financial input do you think Kenya enjoys from the Somali, Sudanese and Ethiopian refugees?

ReplyDelete1) Gado knows Tanzanians more than anybody else. I am shocked to realize that Tzs don't take criticism (but they love to dish it out). Show me one single critical article on the Kikwete (power-rationing-free-falling-Tanzanian-shillings-foreign-investor-bashing-government) and I will be the first to demand an apology from Gado on behalf of Tanzanians.
2) Gado has drawn cartoons about President Kibaki that are worse than this petty Kikwete one (can a Kenyan cartoonist do that for a Tanzanian newspaper today and live to tell the tale?). I am now convinced that if he dared draw anything like that on Kikwete, Tanzanian troops would now be assembling at Namanga.
3) Most of all what makes me really happy about this debate is that the hypocracy is over and we are all "discussing" the issue openly and expressing our true feelings openly. Believe it or not, something very good is going to come out of all this.

GADO is already enjoying the full priviledges of a Kenyan. Mr Gado incase of any problems with our brothers not wanting to take you back, talk to me I will personally go on a hunger strike until you are given full Kenyan citizenship.

Since someone has decided to mention me, I might as well pop in. Penda msipende Kenya is far more welcoming to foreigners and refugees than Tanzania. Tanzanians may have unity and some form of identical identity unlike us tribally divided Kenyans but it is that same thing that has made them insular and unwelcoming of those who are different.

You guys need to have a life and not fantasizing our lovely country Tanzania, and for those who said that we need 20 years to catch-up with Kenya, they need to think again 50% of Kenyans are below poverty line, in comparison to 36% Tanzania and 35% Uganda, you need to invest in your own people. Both countries are poor, but Tanzania has more resources, and not as corrupt as Kenya. Kenyans are very nice people and we both know that we are like brothers but how can you like Tanzanians if you don’t even like your fellow Kenyans just because of the tribe they come from?. Tanzania is on rise no matter if you like it or not

The problem is simple Daily Nation is a foreign newspaper, why a foreign newspaper attack our president? Its okay for Tanzania Daima to attack Kikwete but Daily Nation is foreign newspaper and that makes all the difference.

ReplyDeleteFirst, it is true that the media in Tanzania is, generally, doing PR for Kikwete. But it is not true that there are not articles or cartoons critical of his presidency. There are many, many articles and cartoons. I wont do a comparison btn Kenyan and Tanzanian media to see which of the two has more articles critical of the government since this would require time (and I dont want to make sweeping statements based on what i "think" or "feel" and not what it is)
I, for example, have written many articles critical of his presidency and of the way the media is handling him. I have written for local papers in Tanzania.

Georgians deported as row deepens
Few of the returnees seemed happy to be back in Georgia
Russia has deported a planeload of Georgians, amid a deepening diplomatic row sparked by Georgia's recent arrest of four alleged Russian spies.
An aircraft carrying about 130 Georgians touched down in the capital, Tbilisi, at about 1700 (1300GMT).
The deportations were part of a series of punitive measures taken by Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin urged Europe's security body to pressure Georgia to drastically change its course over the worsening dispute.
In a letter to the current chairman of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Belgian Foreign Minister Karel de Gucht, Mr Putin called Georgia's behaviour aggressive and irresponsible.
He accused the authorities in Tbilisi of planning to solve the conflicts between Russia and Georgia over Abkhazia and South Ossetia by force.
"I believe that at present the OSCE should concentrate its efforts on encouraging the current Georgian leadership to drastically change its course," the letter said.
Sombre return
The Georgians were rounded up in police raids over the past few days and accused of immigration offences, according to media reports.
One of the deportees told Georgian television her passport had expired but another said his documents were in order.
The BBC's Matthew Collin at Tbilisi airport said the deported Georgians walked down the ramp from the huge Russian cargo plane carrying whatever possessions they managed to bring with them.
/Let our goverments(Kenya and Tanzania) deal with these issues and take them seriously. No one needs a Russia/Georgia thing heh!

Yes he is a Tanzanian. I dont know whether he was forced to put that cartoon on by his employer or not, but I think he needs to apologize to all Tanzanians. If he does not, then we would conclude that he is indeeed a slave, this GADO, whom we know as Godfrey Mwampemba. Shame on him!

He always critically cartoonised his friends and teachers alike. i personally learned a lot from his criticism since the age of 10. Africans need to learn to accept criticism.
