Unravelling the Fertilizer Scandal: A Political Storm in the Rift Valley
Political Repercussions
The fertilizer scandal has not just been a cause of concern for the farmers but has also stirred the political waters in the Rift Valley. The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, has called for the dismissal of two Cabinet Secretaries - Mithika Linturi (Agriculture and Livestock) and Rebecca Miano (Trade and Industrialisation). The coalition accused the Cabinet Secretaries of economic sabotage by allowing repeated instances of fake fertilizer and seed scandals.
The Stand-off with KEBS
SBL-Innovate Manufacturer Limited, however, has strongly refuted the allegations. Joe Kariuki, the CEO of the company, accused KEBS of spreading falsehoods and threatened to sue the institution. He also questioned the timing of the accusations, right before the planting season when his company is set to import an additional 6 million bags of fertilizer1. He alleged that KEBS was being used in a war to stop local natural-based non-chemical fertilizers.
The Legal Battle
In the face of these accusations, KEBS has maintained its stance. The institution revealed that it had initiated legal proceedings against SBL Innovate Manufacturers Limited. However, it remains unclear on the product quantity in the market. The National Assembly's Agriculture Committee has decided to summon the Ministry of Agriculture and the NCPB to explain how the fertilizer was given a clean bill of health and stocked in their stores.
The Political Climate
The scandal has also intensified the political climate in the Rift Valley. It has been leveraged by political factions to further their agendas, with accusations of economic sabotage and greed and corruption being thrown around. This incident has brought to the fore the intricate ties between agriculture and politics in the region.
