It has been an eye-opening period in Kenya's political and business arenas, with shocking revelations emerging out of a court case about the third President of the Republic of Kenya, Emilio Stanley Mwai Kibaki, and the late business magnate, Chris Kirubi. These unexpected disclosures, linked to both their personal and professional lives, serve as a stark reminder of the intricate connections between politics and wealth in the country called Kenya.
The Unraveling of Mwai Kibaki's Hidden Past
The Unforeseen Exposé
The recent exposé on Mwai Kibaki, the third President of Kenya, has left many in disbelief. The uncovering of a secret family linked to Kibaki has sparked a wave of controversy, opening a Pandora's box that must have not only affected his family but has also shaken the political landscape.
At the heart of this controversy is a secret daughter, born out of an alleged relationship Kibaki had with a Kenyan woman during his time as a student at the London School of Economics in the United Kingdom in the late 1950s. The daughter, who has now sought inclusion in Kibaki's inheritance, has brought to light a side of the former President's life that many were completely unaware of.
In my opinion this is yet another reminder a rather rude one, that for those who want to understand Kenyan Politics the way to do it is to know what is happening in the back rooms and to be able to have a historical perspective. Those who are not very familiar with the Kumekucha brand have been puzzled because we seem to contradict what is hitting the headlines until the story fully develops and we're made to look very clever while in actual fact all that we have done is to stick to the filthy back rooms of the politics and to anchor ourselves very firmly in history.
The Impact on Kibaki's Legacy
The unfolding of this saga has certainly cast a shadow over Kibaki's legacy. As the court case continues, it is a stark reminder of the complexities of Kenya's political landscape and the skeletons that can emerge from the closets of even the most respected figures.
The Intricate Connection Between Kibaki and Chris Kirubi
The Business Partnership Revelation
As the dust was settling on the Kibaki family saga, another bombshell was dropped. Court documents suggested a business partnership between Mwai Kibaki and the late business magnate Chris Kirubi, known for his vast business empire that spanned various sectors in Kenya and East Africa.
The Prestigious Building Ownership
The partnership, per the court documents, was linked to the ownership of a prestigious building situated in the heart of Nairobi's Central Business District. This building, noted for housing foreign embassies and wealthy corporations, was allegedly co-owned by Kibaki and Kirubi, a fact previously unknown to the public.
The Historical Background
The revelation of this partnership took many back in time, to the 1970s, when Kirubi launched his career towards becoming one of Kenya's most successful businessmen. The court documents hint at the possibility that Kibaki may have been instrumental in Kirubi's rise to success.
Now please allow me to take you a little back in history, because there's a lot of misconception about how Chris Kirubi got rich.
In the mid-1970s, something very crazy happened in the world coffee market that caused a huge shortage worldwide. And in the end made many Kenyan families who were at the right place at the right time filthy rich, overnight. On the night of July 16, 1975, a severe frost destroyed two‐thirds of Brazil's coffee bushes.
At the time, Chris Kirubi was a manager in a parastatal transport company called KENATCO. Kirubi organized on weekends for all the tracks of the wholly government owned KENATCO to head towards the Ugandan border, to a town called Chepkube (now a ghost town) which was the main place where these deals of coffee smuggling were being done.
The coffee was being smuggled in from neighboring Uganda and transported all the way to Mombasa where ships were waiting and paying cash for this coffee cargo.
The crazy story is told about how a bank manager with the then Barclays Bank did the unthinkable. They went into the safe of the bank and removed all the cash to be used to purchase a large consignment of coffee at Chepkube. But the trucks delayed in arriving in Mombasa and so by the time the bank opened on Monday, the safe needed to be accessed and the lorries loaded with coffee had not yet arrived and therefore the cash was not available to replace the cash that had been "borrowed". That particular bank manager ended up being fired but he was not sad because from that single deal his life changed and he was already a multi-millionaire in the 70s.
And that is how Chris Kirubi launched his career to become the most famous business person Kenya has ever known. Very few people have gone into his history to discover exactly how he started and of course he was a very smart man and this information was always kept away from the public so that younger Kenyans have never had any idea.
Chris Kirubi: The Power of an Oligarch
The Influence and Power
Chris Kirubi (Kibaki's business partner) was not just a successful businessman; he was an influential figure who held significant sway in Kenya's political landscape. His influence stretched far beyond the confines of his business empire, reaching into the very heart of the Kenyan political arena.
The Role of an Oligarch
Kirubi's wealth and influence painted him as an oligarch, a powerful figure who, although unelected, was able to shape the political and economic direction of the country. His ability to influence key policy decisions and shape the political landscape was evident in his interactions with various political figures.
The Politicians' Confessions
Several politicians, including Wiper's Kalonzo Musyoka and Ford-Kenya's Moses Wetang'ula, have in the past made startling confessions about Kirubi's influence. Their speeches at Kirubi's funeral painted a picture of a man who had the power to make or break political careers and shape the destiny of the country.
The recent revelations about Mwai Kibaki and Chris Kirubi have provided a glimpse into the complex intertwining of politics and wealth in Kenya. They serve as a reminder that in the world of politics and business, nothing is as straightforward as it seems. The unfolding of these revelations continues to captivate the nation, showcasing the intricate dance between power, wealth, and influence. As more details emerge, it's clear that these revelations are more than just individual stories—they are a reflection of the intricate tapestry of Kenya's political and economic landscape.
It will of course be very interesting to see how the ongoing Kibaki succession case in court (that has already revealed too much) concludes.
