The mystery surrounding the events on Jogoo Road last Friday, when Raila Odinga returned to the country, is still unfolding. The latest shocking revelation comes from Winnie Odinga, Raila's daughter, who was in the vehicle during the incident. According to her account, the situation escalated suddenly when a tear gas canister hit the vehicle, followed by several more. The immediate effect of the tear gas was a thick smoke screen, but things soon took a darker turn when at least six gunshots were fired at the car. Winnie confirmed that the damage to the Range Rover's windscreen was caused by a bullet, with two bullets hitting the side of the vehicle as well. The most terrifying moment came when one bullet shattered the windscreen, almost striking her directly.
In her own words, Winnie said, "If I hadn’t been in a bulletproof car, that bullet would have hit me." This highlights just how narrowly she escaped. The security arrangements for Raila Odinga during his return to Kenya were more elaborate than usual, possibly due to an awareness that something might occur. Raila himself had been wearing a bulletproof vest for added protection.
This attempted attack on Raila Odinga is deeply troubling, especially in today’s Kenya. It underscores the unacceptable violence aimed at high-profile individuals, which could have had catastrophic consequences. Following the attack, ordinary citizens surrounded the bulletproof vehicle, using their bodies as human shields to protect their leader, clearly indicating that those nearby witnessed the gunfire firsthand.
At first, I was skeptical about claims of an assassination attempt on Raila’s life, but this new information from Winnie, who was an eyewitness, has revealed the gravity of the situation. In the next episode, we’ll dive deeper into the sequence of events leading up to the attack, as these kinds of incidents often involve warning signs.
