Prof Mutahi Ngunyi's link to Uhuru Kenyatta's social media revolution
The recent move by Prof Mutahi Ngunyi to join the Ruto camp has taken Kenyans by surprise. However a peek at his past reveals a shocking consistency. Let us start this political story where it really started at the Chancery building in Nairobi
Where it all started
To understand the possible impact that Prof Mutahi Ngunyi could have on the future of Kenyan politics, one must first grasp what has happened in the past and the major role in it the professor has played, mainly thrust on him by destiny and some rather unique circumstances. And it is a long story that must be told from the beginning. But we are going to tell it briefly.
That story starts at a building in Nairobi called The Chancery. The Kenyatta family empire has been ran from several floors on this building (that is opposite the Nairobi Pentecoastal church Valley Road) for many decades.
In that building was a rather curious site in early 2009 of a room filled with white men carefully monitoring "something" on numerous computer and TV screens.
The Nexus: Politics and Social Media
You see, the team at The Chancery were not just analysing and enhancing Uhuru's image, they were also creating a digital strategy. This was a strategy that was designed to tap into the then virgin but rapidly growing popularity of social media in Kenya. With more and more Kenyans becoming connected to the internet and spending more time on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, the team saw an opportunity. This was easy because they had already seen it all unravel in their home country.
For the first time in Kenya's political history, a political campaign was being sold on social media. The digital footprint of Uhuru Kenyatta was expanding, reaching out to Kenyans who were previously unengaged in politics. He was shaping his narrative, controlling the conversation, and building an online following that would later become a critical part of his support base.

The emergence of Jackson Mandago's name as one of the possible persons of interest in the Finland Scholarship scam (after all he was governor when the scheme was launched) is bound to raise political temperatures considerably at a time when the Ruto administration is so shaky and under so much pressure.
Mandago finds himself in a vulnerable position due to his love-hate relationship with Ruto in the past opening the possibility of the president succumbing to pressure and throwing him under the bus.
