Kenyans, like ordinary citizens of any country of the world do not usually pay too much attention to news outside their country. But on Sunday a video went viral where a commander of the Sudan army in a press conference made some shocking allegations against Ruto. That man is General Yasir Alatta, the Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF).
The problem with the video for many Kenyans was that the man spoke in the language used in Sudan that the majority of Kenyans would not understand.
But here is the translation of what General Yasir Alatta said about Ruto (shocking);
The Kenyan president says he will bring in (to Sudan) the East African troops. We say to the Kenyan President, leave the East African troops behind. Bring only the Kenyan army instead and let them face us.
...and bring them in with the country that supports you, that supports mercenaries like you, that supports you and buys you with their money; you can bring their army too. We swear, we swear, none of them will return home. We, our brothers, have only one way, Sudan, where the sun will rise tomorrow without Janjaweed (the rebel force supported by powerful foreign countries).
Incidentally Khartoum has repeatedly stated that one of the reasons why they will never trust Ruto is because of what they say is his "prominent" business links with Lt-Gen Daglo who is a very major player (if not the most significant player) in the Sudan conflict.
Fascinatingly Daglo's position and circumstances of coming into power are eerily similar to those of Ruto coming into power in Kenya. And so it is worth our while here to take a deeper look at this Lt-Gen Daglo.
After fighting broke out between the military and the potent paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), hopes for Sudan's transition to civilian administration began to fade.
The RSF's commander, General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, is mostly responsible for the RSF's impact. He rose to fame as the second-in-command of a transitional council established in 2019, following the ousting of the previous autocrat Omar al-Bashir.
A year and a half after his RSF and the army conducted a coup against a joint civilian-military administration (in 2021), Daglo appears still dissatisfied with the military, claiming that its ranks are still loaded with partisans who will obstruct the transition to democracy.
Who is the man who rose through the ranks to become one of Sudan's wealthiest and most influential individuals and the driving force behind its dreaded fighters?
Daglo, the nephew of a tribal chief of the camel-trading branch of the Rizeigat, was born in the Mahariya tribe of the Rizeigat community in Darfur in or around 1974.
He hardly completed the third grade before quitting school and starting a camel trading business.
The most popular myth surrounding Daglo is that he was forced to join the fighting in Darfur after men attacked his trade representative, murdered 60 members of his family, and stole all of his camels.
He joined the Janjaweed, a group of Arab tribal militias active in Darfur and parts of Chad that are primarily composed of camel-trading tribes.
Daglo quickly progressed through the ranks and caught the attention of the then President al-Bashir, who was looking to enlist Janjaweed to battle non-Arab people who had started to rebel against his control in Darfur in 2003. Daglo quickly rose to the position of commander.
Human rights groups have always accused the Janjaweed of the most horrific war crimes throughout the Dafur conflict. These include killings, rapes and torture of civilians.
Under Daglo's direction, the RSF was established in 2013. Al-Bashir and his National Intelligence and Security Services oversaw the amalgamation of Janjaweed components into a new army.
Soon after, Daglo received more credibility and autonomy as al-Bashir started to rely on him and his militiamen to put an end to his adversaries in Darfur and elsewhere in Sudan. Al-Bashir was impressed by the towering, intimidating militia leader.
After being promoted to lieutenant general, Daglo was granted complete freedom to acquire valuable gold mines in Darfur that belonged to a rival tribe chief. In this way, he significantly increased his wealth, virtually overnight.
Now here is the super fascinating fact revealing the dark side of Daglo and his ability to betray people at the drop of a hat. Daglo actually took part in toppling the President Bashir (the man who had helped me climb to the top) in 2019 when the rebellion broke out (in fact there are those who say he played a very key role) ending al-Bashir's nearly 30-year tenure.
After al-Bashir left office, a civilian-military alliance was established, and Daglo excelled throughout that period of transition.
Immediately after al-Bashir's overthrow, he rose to become the deputy leader of the Transitional Military Council, which later became a member of the Sovereignty Council.
But Daglo remained consistent and always dealt harshly with dissidents, as he always did. In a crackdown that Daglo denied initiating, his RSF forces murdered over 100 protesters in a camp near the Ministry of Defence in 2019.
And there is no denying his influence in international politics knowing which powerful forces to align himself to. Because while al-Bashir and other top Sudanese officials have been charged with genocide and crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court, no charges have been brought against Daglo despite accusations by rights groups of war crimes committed by the forces he has headed over the past decade.
Over the years, Daglo has forged powerful ties both in the region and internationally.
He sent RSF forces to fight Iran-aligned Houthi rebels in Yemen, allying with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
How the latest troubles broke out in Sudan further illustrates the character of Daglo. And here is how it happened;
After an agreement was struck in December 2022, outlining the steps to civilian government between the army, the RSF, and Sudan's civilian pro-democracy forces, the most recent violence erupted.
In accordance with the agreement, the army would go back to its barracks and the RSF would be integrated into its ranks, uniting the two forces under a single commander, who is currently General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
Clearly Daglo and Burhan decided that they wanted the leadership of Sudan and thus the battle erupted in April 2023 between the two forces they lead, the Sudanese army and Daglo's RSF.
