Are All The Polls Putting Raila Ahead Rigged?

archive

The latest Steadmann poll puts ODM presidential hopeful, Raila Odinga slightly ahead of President Kibaki. 44% of those polled said that they would vote for Raila while 40% said they preferred President Kibaki. Only 10% said that they would for Kalonzo Musyoka.

This is the only survey by Steadmann where it has been revealed how the survey was financed. This particular one was paid for by the Standard Newspapers group.

However the poll was conducted ONLY in Nairobi.

This is very surprising because most analysts (including those leaving comments in this blog have always been sure of a Kibaki victory in Nairobi.)

Of course there are also those wonderful Kumekucha readers who believe that any poll that puts Raila ahead of Kibaki has been rigged or is just plain propaganda. I will be very interested in what Jeff and PKW have to say about this latest Steadmann poll.

As reported here, some days back, all the figures coming in are telling a story that nobody wants to believe. They seem to suggest that if the election were to be held today, Raila Odinga would not only win, he would win by a landslide.

Other strategies to halt Raila’s popularity that even I thought would work very effectively seem to be falling flat. For instance the circumcision thing that Simeon Nyachae tried to pull off in his Kisii stronghold has backfired badly and we are seeing photographs on the front page of newspapers of Kisii people burning effigies of Mr Nyachae.

Deep in Central province, there is a lot of discontent against the Kibaki administration. In my view...

The Advantage Kibaki Will Enjoy If He Fires Nyachae And Mwakwere Now

archive

This government condemning election violence means absolutely nothing. We have seen this kind of lip service before.

In 1991/2 there was plenty of evidence to suggest that the government then was financing the tribal clashes in the Rift Valley. But we saw some very strong statements from President Moi then, condemning the clashes and saying the usual fairy tales—like the government is in control of the situation and so on.

The only thing that can convince Kenyans is action. For starters the president should distance himself from Simeon Nyachae and his actions and a slap on the wrist is not enough. He needs to sack the roads minister. And while he is at it, he also needs to fire his other cabinet Minister Ali Makwere who has given his government a very bad image.

During a live call in show on KTN last week a caller asked the minister about his being sighted at the notorious Koinange street with other politicians. Makwere appears to have lost his head on live TV and answered back sarcastically that he was looking for his mother (the caller’s mother) to make love to. This abusive...

Fake Notes On The Increase

archive

One of the sure signs that there is an election around the corner is when we suddenly get flooded with fake notes.

My information is that there has been a very sharp increase in fake local currency circulating in the market. High on the list this time round are Kshs 200 notes which many unsuspecting Kenyans do not look at too carefully—at least not in the same way that they look at Kshs 1,000 notes.

The fake notes are also getting better and better and much more difficult to detect.

So why should fake notes increase when elections are around the corner?

A reader gave us a theory here last year about how politicians and thugs are very closely linked and are sometimes the same people. By the way another sign that an election is imminent is a dramatic increase in armed robberies including bank robberies.

Religion & Politics

Church, Christianity and religion seem to be playing a big part in this year’s elections. Many Church leaders like Pius Muiru, Margaret Wanjiru, Kamlesh Pattni (also known as Paul) and Mutava Musyimi etc… have expressed their interest in joining politics.

ODM-K presidential candidate Kalonzo Musyoka has severally associated himself with Christians and is said to be a born again Christian. He also believes that he is the chosen one of God to lead this nation.

ODM presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, has been attending Church services where church leaders surround him in prayers to bless his presidential candidature. Like on Sunday he attended a service in Kericho before an ODM rally. Priests laid hands on him and his running mate Musalia Mudavadi to bless them.

President Kibaki known of not so famous in attending church every Sunday like the former president Moi, lately seems to have changed too. He is nowadays a regular church attendant.

Kamlesh Pattni was in Marakwet with Linah Kilimo where they attended a fundraiser in Aid of African Inland Church.

In yesterday’s Standard newspaper,I was shocked to see former “Total Man” Nicholas Biwott receiving blessings from American preachers who will fund multi-million water project in Kerio Valley. One thing though, he did not close his eyes when others did. That is not Christian like total man but I know next time you will close your eyes.

What I ask myself is the role of Christianity in politics? Why renowned men and women of God now want to take up a new occupation in politics? What is so good in politics that they missed in the church leadership?

Then my next question is why are our politicians who had earlier been irregular churchmen now turning to God? Have they seen God’s strength as what they need now or could it be to hoodwink the electorate? Do they really mean what they are doing or they are out to hunt for more votes in the churches? There must be a reason why they all are now visiting churches and that reason if you ask me is for personal gain not spiritual ratification, though this may be part of it for the few of them?

Pulpit to politics, priests, pastors why are you going this direction? I think a political constituency is bigger than a church congregation and you are looking for more followers. I don’t intend to judge anyone but I seek to know. What is politics to do with religion?

Lastly I want to say that God at His own appointed time will give us (Kenya) his chosen leader. Not by the number of hands that the earthly men has placed on you or the increased visitation to the holy shrines that you have made of late, but because God knows who is the next president of this country.

Comments In Kumekucha Now Moderated

My Dear Beloved Kumekuchans,

AS a result of the rapid increase in porn comments in this blog, I have been left with no alternative but to start moderating comments again. What this means is that if you leave a comment, it will have to wait until it is seen by a human and approved for posting. We will not be censoring any comments and will only reject pornographic posts.

I will try my best to make sure that comments are moderated as quickly as possible.

Kindly bear with me as I make arrangements to seek an alternative arrangement that will take us back to real time comments.

Bear in mind that as the mother of all general elections draws nearer, mischief is bound to increase, but take heart, we shall overcome.

Have a nice day.

For the love of the motherland,

Unspoken Truths About The Nyachae Election Violence Incident

archive

Hon Simeon Nyachae who watched in glee as ODM’s William Ruto, Omingo Magara and Chris Bichagge formerly of Coffee Board Of Kenya but now an aspirant, were chased by armed youths stubbornly insists that he has nothing to apologize about. He further adds that the press has taken sides already in these elections and they seem to be overwhelmingly on ODM’s side.

Before we go into the events of last Friday that have raised so much heat, let us analyze Nyachae’s allegations against the press. The Minister gives as his evidence the fact that his incident has received so much publicity and yet the harassment of other candidates in Kisumu has not been covered by the press. He also insinuates that ODM seem to be getting more press than other political parties.

Now that last statement is true although it is not a matter of favoring but pure commercial reasons. The brand new Nairobi Star seems to have been struggling until they discovered the “ODM trick.” The truth is that any headline you put on any second rate rag of even gutter press publication that has ODM on it will sell like hot cakes. So what do you expect the press to do? I do not want to speculate at this juncture as to why this is so and why ODM headlines sell even in the heart of Central province. But I want to say that I believe in fairness and that the major political parties should get equal coverage as far as possible. However the headline business is serious business because it touches on the commercial survival of publications and my take is that publications have the prerogative on what headline they should carry.

Incidentally the East African Standard was first off the blocks on this one and...

Narc-Kenya Versus DP: The Crux Of The Problem in PANU

archive

Yesterday a reader left the following comment in this blog;

“The problem with PANU is the sitting MPs. Truth be told, most of them are not going to be re-elected. Whether it's by coincidence or design, they are all in Nark-Kenya. Through guerilla tactics they have been able to get nominations to vie using that party's ticket. Since the situation on the ground is different, their opponents had to look for ways of ousting them in the coming general elections. The option therefore being DP. This explains the differences being experienced in PANU.

In Central province, Peter Kenneth & William Kabogo are almost sure of re-election irrespective of party their party affiliation. The rest have a battle ahead of them. In their quest for re-election they are jeopardizing the President's campaign juggernaut. It will be a tall order to convince them to run on one party. Reason being, they will lose to new comers who can offer what they have failed in the last four and a half years.

Just listen to likes of Joshua Toro, Robinson Githae, Amos Kimunya and you will see that there's more here than meets the eye.”
Mathayo

I could not agree with Mathayo more. In this comment he has described the crux of the problem within PANU. Clearly it is something that is unreasonable.

So what should President Kibaki do? The truth is that he is between a rock and a hard place. If he abandons current legislators...

Fireworks Expected In Juja Constituency

archive

Election Analysis: Focus on Juja Constituency

There are those who insist that incumbent MP William Kabogo Gitau will smoothly sail back to parliament. Kumekucha does not quite agree. Although Kabogo will have to start as the hot favorite to retain his parliamentary seat, it will not be smooth sailing and what we will see in Juja will be a bruising no-holds barred battle.

Kabogo is extremely popular in his constituency, especially with youths. Thanks mainly to his habit of staying close to the ground throughout his entire tenure this last 5 years. And his wallet has been busy all over the constituency and many have realized that the relatively young legislator is much richer than was earlier thought. His ride (a noisy helicopter) has enabled him to efficiently be in many places almost at the same time. That helicopter will be one campaign tool that will give him a serious edge against any would-be challengers.

The fact that Mr Kabogo made it to parliament through the ticket of an obscure party called Sisi Kwa Sisi, should tell anybody interested in Juja politics, a lot.

This is how they voted in 2002...

Moi Heckled In Aldai: Hired Mob Or A Sign Of Things To Come?

archive

Poor Moi is hardly experiencing the quiet retirement he may have hoped for. He is now seeing things that he has never experienced before in his long political career.

Moi turned up at a fundraising function in Aldai constitution only to be greeted by chants of “ODM” “ODM” (ile shetani sitaki itajwe mbele yangu).

Tempers really flared and the crowd got worked up when area MP Jimmy Choge appealed to the people not to vote for Raila Odinga in the presidential race.

When Moi stood up to address the people and asked them to raise the one finger Kanu salute, only a handful did so while most of the crowd stubbornly kept their hands down. Still Moi warned the crowd that they would deeply regret supporting ODM blindly.

Former nominated MP Ezekial Barengtuny criticized the crowd and said that...

Nyanza Man Who Tried To Get Rich Selling Hippo Milk

archive

There was this fascinating case recently where a Nyanza man was charged with selling hippo milk (unfit for human consumption) to unsuspecting consumers.

You have to understand that a hippo is one of the most violent wild animals around and is commonly found around Luo Nyanza in the many rivers that criss cross the area. A Hippo will attack without being provoked. So for starters the prosecution had a problem convincing the court that the milk the accused had sold to his clients was actually milk from a hippo. How does somebody get to milk a hippo, the judge wondered?

Locals claim that the man was using witchcraft to hold the hippo in a trance so as to milk it. Apparently Hippo milk like any other mild does not taste very different from the usual cow milk. Luckily for the defense, the judge was not as superstitious.

It is said that most of...

Why I am Dumping the Kibaki Campaign

archive

Guest post by anonymous

Read a desperate Kikuyu sentiments below!! What is it Kikuyus see in Tinga that other tribes don't see??

The govt knows very well the reason they'll be losing the December polls yet Tinga is still being used as the scapegoat!!

Ok its official I have defected from supporting Kibaki The man does not want to win I can't support a man who doesn't want to win .

However i will not be voting for odm Because i cant find anything of value to support in it . I like many young people in Kenya will be staying at home

The one thing that came out glaring from last week's news was the fact that Mwai Kibaki will lose the General Election, even with all the advantages of incumbency and the inertia he enjoys as head of state.

Mwai Kibaki is not a bad man; he is no more corrupt than Raila Odinga. He is no more a tribalist than our first President Kenyatta ever was, and neither is he a violent man. By all accounts he is a God-fearing, kindly family man with an excellent educational background and a long career in politics. What he is not by a long shot is a leader...

Kibaki’s Inner Circle And Re-election Campaign Team: Is It Possible To Rid It Of The Arrogance?

archive

President Mwai Kibaki was visibly in pain from his road accident injuries when he was sworn in as Kenya's third President in December 2002.

It is said that when the people fear the government, you have a dictatorship and when the government fears the people you have a democracy. So what is the verdict with the Kibaki administration?

Whatever it is, one thing is crystal clear. This government has tried very hard to re-create the Jomo Kenyatta era in many ways. In actions, policies and thinking and have completely disregarded the people, let alone feared them. The only thing they have not done is to assassinate politicians that are seen as threats (although Raila Odinga is still on record for saying that the infamous Artur brothers were hired to do just that. To date the Artur brothers saga is still shrouded in mystery).

If there is one word that will be used often to remember the Kibaki administration, then it will be the word; “arrogance.” Incidentally this is the same word used by members of the Democratic Party within the controversial PNU umbrella party who are feeling left out of things. They refuse to see the president’s strategy to...

Is It Yote Yawezekana Bila Moi Or Is It Bila Mwai?

archive

It is said that nothing can capture a heart like a melody can. The seasoned campaigners within ODM know this only too well. Remember the popular Unbwogable number that became the National rainbow Coalition theme song in 2002? Not to mention the corrupted Yote Yawezekana Bila Moi..

It is emerging that this time the Mapambano, Musilale ODM anthem is taking the country by storm and chances are high that Yote yawazekana Bila Moi is set to make a come back only that this time it will alternate with a new release, Yote Yawezekana Bila Mwai.

The massive crowd in Kericho yesterday seemed to thoroughly enjoy Mapambano, Musilale, of course they all got the right musical key from legislator Otieno Kajwang.

Meanwhile the PNU side seem to prefer...

Man Dies And Goes To Hell, Prefers Kenyan Hell

A man died and goes to hell...

There he finds that there is a different hell for each country and decides he'll pick the least painful to spend his eternity.
He goes to the German hell and asks, "What do they
do here?"

He is told "first they put you in an electric chair for an hour. Then they lay you on a bed of nails for another hour. Then the German devil comes in and whips you for the rest of the day".

The man does not like the sound of that at all so he moves on. He checks out the USA hell as well as the Russian hell and many more. He discovers that they are all similar to the German hell.
Then he comes to the Kenyan hell and finds that there is a long queue of people waiting to get in...

Amazed, he asks, "What do they do here?"

The Controversy Of The Man Eaters Of Tsavo

archive

Nothing yet has had a bigger impact on East Africa than the impact of what was then called the Uganda Railway which cut into the interior (through what is today Kenya) and ended up in present day Uganda.

But what has for a long time fascinated Kenyans, East Africans and historianms the world over is the chilling account of the lions of Tsavo that developed a taste for human flesh and caused scores of deaths in 1898.

In that year as the story goes, as the railway was being built in that part of what is now the Tsavo national park, two lions notorious for eating humans caused havoc and almost brought work on the railway to a halt.

Amazingly the lions behaved very strangely and not like any other lions then and to date. The would enter a health center (attracted by the scent of human blood and drug out a live human being whom they would promptly kill and feast on. The lions were also known to drag humans from inside tents.

Lions are by nature very intelligent animals but are not known to hunt humans, which is exactly what the two famous Tsavo lions would do.

Locals and the coolies from India swore that the beasts were not lions but evil spirits angry at the railway line being built across that particular area and now hungry for human blood. This seems to have been confirmed by some Maasai warriors hired to take care of “the problem” who left after a few encounters with the lions. They confidently passed the verdict that those were NOT lions but evil spirits that took the form of animals. This scared those working on the railway line even more because the Masai had a long tradition of hunting down and killing lions and so if they were unable to deal with these “lions” then surely they were not lions.

To this day experts have not been able to explain the lion’s...

What Would You Do If You Were A Looter In Kenya Today?

archive

Somebody told us here that when you go to the bank and they tell you your balance is Kshs 500 million, your thinking and everything about you changes. I believe this is 1000% true and for this reason it would be very difficult for any ordinary Kenyans like me and you who has not looted billions from the people of Kenya to figure out the way looters think.

====================================

Raila Amollo Odinga: Mere talk, or can he really deal with powerful looters in Kenya? Read open letter to Raila From Swiss national he made a promise to in German.
====================================

Just to give an example from the Kroll report. You are so rich that money is coming out of your ears, literally, but then you decide not to pay your lawyer’s bills and many other bills for services rendered. So when a lawyer keeps $650,000 from land they have sold on your behalf and sends you a fee note demanding the balance, you go ballistic. You even rush to a city hotel when somebody calls you to tell you that the lawyer involved is there having a drink and you go on cause a scene in public. Yet to you $650,000 is chicken feed. You could literally use it as toilet paper and not even think about it.

Still I will ask you to put yourself in the shoes of looters in view of the Saturday speech by Raila and also new developments in recent weeks which seem to threaten your family fortune stuffed in foreign accounts. What would you do now that it has become apparent that Raila is set to win the general elections? Would you;

(a) Join ODM and heavily finance...

Why Kenyans Must Reject PANU

archive

Kenyans who vote PANU are risking more than they can imagine. This is because the message from the government and the incumbent is that things are already getting better and therefore they should be voted back to do even more good in the years between 2008 and 2012. In other words a vote for PNU or PANU is a vote to retain the status quo.

But what is our real situation in the world today?

Sample this.

In most International airports in the world customs and immigration checks usually have two queues. One specifically for passports from a certain well known large and heavily populated country and the other for the rest of the world. Now for your information, there is a third queue that is developing slowly but surely specifically for those carrying passports from a country called Kenya.

Have you been through an airport security check recently in some Western capitals?

The reason is simple. Kenya has become one of the biggest transit points for hard drugs. The Kroll report showed us why this has happened...

Dear Mr. Odinga,

Now that you have officially entered the ‚race’ to become the next President of Kenya and knowing that many people are putting all their hopes into you for leading them into a better future, I wish to remind you of some promises you once made and which you should finally try to fulfill – with or without winning the Elections……..
You remember that we spoke several times on the phone on June 27 and 28, 2000, when you accompanied President Daniel arap Moi to Switzerland. You stayed with the Kenyan Delegation at the Golf-Hotel, Crans-Montana (and just to revive your memory, you stayed at Room 326).

I do not want to go into all the details for our contacts at that time since they are included in detail in my London Declaration, because they are also not the reason for this Open Letter to you.

I just want to remind you of your promise to me to put all your political influence behind certain people for not only bringing the (known) killers of Dr. Ouko behind bars, but also to go to the bottom of all the corruption cases and cheating of the Kenyan People and to make sure that something like that can never happen again in the future.

I know that at that time (June 2000) you still hoped to be Moi’s chosen candidate for the 2002...

The Coming Crisis That Kenyans Refuse To See

archive

Despite accusations by people with their own agenda here, I have never been a paid agent for anybody and what’s more I have always told the truth. Many readers have been able to sense that and that is one of the reasons they have been endeared to this blog in large numbers.

Artist's impression of Raila And President Kibaki in happier times soon after the 2002 elections.

Regular readers know that the only possible presidential candidate that I have been a die-hard supporter of is John Githongo. But alas, the poor hero of a man seems to be too scared for his life to come back and give us all a genuine choice—and quite rightly so, as you will discover when you are through reading this article.

I am about to spoil all your excitement for the forthcoming elections and ask you all to think beyond your narrow interests and put our beloved country first.

As matters stand on the ground, ODM and Raila Odinga are set to win a landslide victory in the upcoming elections. No need to breathe fire and call me names, I had absolutely nothing to do with the feelings most ordinary Kenyans have against the current government and the incumbent (although I have been trying to tell you about it since 2005 but few paid any attention).

And if you doubt me, just make a brief tour of the country and talk to the voters. In many areas of Rift Valley, Coast and even Western, a mere mention of your support for the incumbent can cause you serious bodily harm from wananchi who are dead set on ODM and Raila.

And all this is being revealed at a time when PANU can’t seem to get their act together. In fact the parties supporting the president’s re-election are so sharply divided that they look irreconcilable.

So maybe Kenyans who support Raila should be happy and start celebrating? No way! All is far from being well. Today on his arrival back from the United States, Raila Odinga has given a very bold and tough talking speech on how he plans to tackle corruption head on by constituting what we have always suggested here; a truth and reconciliation commission. (Read his speech in full). Whatever you say about Raila, he is one brave cookie. I say this because any sensible Kenyan who is aware of the people who control this country that is rapidly hurtling towards being another Columbia know that what Raila has done is a very brave thing and there are those who would argue that it is NOT wise at this time.

Of course the son of Jaramogi must be buoyed by the strong support and popularity most keen observers know he enjoys. Incidentally across tribal lines and surprise, surprise, even amongst many voters of the younger generation in the heart of Central province.

And that is where the crisis is...

Surprise Hard Hitting Raila Statement At The Airport

A NEW GOVERNANCE AGENDA FOR KENYA

archive

Press statement delivered at JKIA, Nairobi, 22 September 2007

By Hon Raila Amolo Odinga MP

WHO WOULD HAVE imagined a conspiracy of fate that today - in September of 2007 - political forces in our beloved country have realigned themselves as malevolently as they have.

Today, the Daniel arap Moi who was evicted from State House 5 years ago has effectively returned there.

And the man who served as his Vice President, Mwai Kibaki who is now the constitutionally elected head of state is also in the same State House. And recently he has sadly been joined there by the Official Leader of the Opposition, Hon Uhuru Kenyatta.

Home guards who castrated freedom fighters now manage our security system, and the individuals from the Moi kleptocracy era continue to head and manage our civil service and the parastatals. Kenyans are once again at the mercy of the repressive and regressive forces.

The second liberation has been consumed by the authors of KenRen, Goldenberg and Anglo Leasing. The very same men who turned Kenya into one of the most corrupt nations on the planet have united in an attempt to hold onto power once again so that they can continue enriching themselves and their friends. To woo the wanainchi for their votes, stolen funds will be poured and they shall be constantly reminded of their differentness along tribal lines...

Commentators Threaten Kumekucha

archive

Yesterday I reused a comment left in this blog earlier on which everybody apparently missed initially where a Mr Joseph-Oloo Obiero of Denver claimed that he had had a candid session with Raila in the US where amongst other things he had asked what the ODM candidate planned to do against corruption and looters.

What was most interesting about the post was the fact that both pro-Raila and anti-Raila forces here were very upset by it. Pro-Raila forces because it exposed their candidate’s true feelings on looters at a time when they had worked very had to tone down their candidate’s perceived radicalism. Anti-Raila forces were very upset because it made the candidate look good and decisive in what they were going to do against corruption.

Somebody even threatened Kumekucha with legal action (if the popularity of this blog can be ascertained). Firstly whenever somebody starts talking about the popularity of this site, I immediately know whom I am dealing with. Basically chaps from the old school who think a blog is like a printed newspaper where you regularly get concerned that folks will not buy copies. They have no inkling of what search engine optimization and search engine traffic means. Basically we are talking about old school chaps with an agenda and on somebody else’s payroll. And sometimes they are partly effective in convincing some of our other readers here that the information we publish here is mere propaganda...

Who Is Anglo Leasing?

archive

Who is the mystery man behind Anglo Leasing who has remained behind the shadows for all this long? Who is this untouchable?

One mystery has lingered ever since this major scandal of the Kibaki administration widely referred to as the Angle Leasing affair broke. It is the simple question; “Who Is Anglo Leasing?

Who is the final authority who sanctioned the corrupt deals where Kenyan lost billions of shillings. Is it Daudi Mwiraria? Or is it Chris Murungaru? Who would have had enough power to sanction the withdrawal of such large amounts from the Treasury?

Raila Reveals His Plan For Looters At A Private Meeting In The US

Raila Amollo Odinga: Next President of Kenya?

I am grateful to Joseph-Oloo Obiero of Denver, USA who has provided this blog with excerpts of a personal interview he carried out recently with ODM presidential aspirant Raila Amollo Odinga.

Joseph Obiero said...

I was one of the fortunate few who managed to engage ODM luminary Raila Odinga after his visit to Denver. I have been resident in the US after obtaining my green card in 1996 and starting my career as a Walmart line stores clerk. I landed home over the weekend and the politics that I’ve found here are as hot as I could not have imagined.

After his keynote address at Denver, I and a group of about 6 friends engaged Raila for about 15 minutes in the hallway next to the auditorium. I will replicate our conversation and his answers. They are not verbatim, but give the gist of all what he said as accurately as my mind can remember.

JO: When you talk broadly about radical changes, can you tell us in specifics, without resorting to generalities?

Raila(R.O): The changes I envisage and that I have promised to address within my first 90 days in office are; Dismantling the cabals of tribalism that are choking our country and resulting in runaway corruption and frustration for the people of Kenya.

Since the Moi era, or 'error' as I call it, prime jobs have been stuffed with semi-literate Kalenjin herdsmen. I imagined that Kibaki would correct this but in fact he maintained many of them, and those he sent home were replaced by his kleptocratic tribesmen. As we all know, 90% of all thievery is perpetrated by one tribe in Kenya and these are the people I must put behind bars and later on catch up with the Goldenberg and the Anglo-leasing – we call it anglo-fleecing – crooks.

J.O: But people see the likes of William Ruto in your team?

R.O: The matter of bringing in corrupt leaders was started by Kibaki, and in truth, do not be surprised if you find that the likes of...

Panic In Kibaki Re-Election Team?

archive

Evidence continues to mount that Raila Amollo Odinga and his ODM party may indeed be winning in the high stakes political game that will culminate in the mother of all general elections at the end of this year.

I have just received some more figures from yet another source who assures me that these are the latest NSIS estimates on the three main presidential candidates.

Kibaki 3.56 million votes

Raila 4.54 million votes

Kalonzo 1.83 million votes.

This is behind a backdrop where more than 900 hopefuls flocked into Orange House on a single day to seek nomination papers, most of them paying the required Kshs 100,000 nomination fee. Quick calculations give you KShs 90 million. It is unlikely that any other political party will...

Why We Kenyans Need To Be More Tolerant

archive

There are quite a number of regular Kumekucha readers who are very upset at the abusive language used in this blog. Many others are visibly very irritated by the outlandish and ridiculous views of others.

There have been suggestions that I simply delete and block the famous Kioko from BC for instance. The truth is that I have carefully considered that option and have found it to be undemocratic and intolerant. It would set us off in a direction where we will be working towards a forum where we all agree with each other like some zombies or remote controlled robots. It would create something here that is too distant to reality. The reality of the situation is that we have very many Kiokos in our midst in Kenya. Unfortunate sick minds that can’t think beyond certain parts of their bodies. But guess what it is their democratic right to have whatever views they have.

The Great Tanzanian Contradiction: We Want Foreign Investors But We Don't Want Foreigners In Our Country

Kenyans are a very ignorant lot when it comes to what is happening in foreign countries, even if those foreign countries are our neighbors.

For a long time now I have revealed how badly Kenyan investors are mistreated in neighboring Tanzania and the rather unfair situations where Tanzanians live very comfortably in Kenya and yet life is made as difficult as possible for Kenyan entrepreneurs living in Tanzania.

The really fascinating thing is the double-speak going on.

Now a British investor, Stewart Middleton, who has been frustrated at every turn by a local businessman, the police and media does not know what to do…

Vultures Circle As Old Trusted Moi Friends Jump Ship

archive

Even I did not have any idea of just how bad things are currently for the Moi family when I wrote the article two days ago wondering if Moi had lost it.

The information I now have clearly shows that many of the people that the former president may have been banking on to make things happen for President Kibaki’s re-election campaign, have now switched camps and are supporting “hiyo shetani hapana taka kusikia” (that devil that I don’t want to hear mentioned) as the elderly Moi sometimes refers to ODM in private.

Kaddu chairman and party owner Cyrus Jirongo’s earthshaking declaration yesterday that he was stepping down from the presidential race in favor of Raila Odinga seems to have been but a tip of the iceberg.

We reported here in Kumekucha, about the initial “icy” meeting between Jirongo and ODM’s William Ruto and Musalia Mudavadi. Jirongo at the time seems to have felt offended because he was being asked to step down in favor of Raila Odinga without being offered anything. So the big question that is very important for Kenyans to answer at this point, is what has he been offered this time? But more on that in the next post.

Another prominent personality that has recently declared total support for Raila Odinga’s bid for the presidency at the expense of Moi and his project 2007 is one...

Mystery Sugar Smuggling At Night That The Government Has Done Nothing About

archive

I receive all sorts of story tips from Mombasa. I highly suspect that some of my informants do their rounds in popular Mnazi joints. The problem with tips gotten at such places is that they have to be taken with a pinch of salt.

So when I received a tip about 2 months ago that massive illegal sugar imports were landing in the country along the coastline away from the port at night, I was sure that this information was NOT correct. Those are things that used to happen only during the Moi regime, I reasoned to myself and did not give the matter a second thought.

However about 2 weeks ago I was shocked to learn that KTN had sent cameras to Mombasa and captured footage of sugar being offloaded from speed boats. The speed boats were fetching the commodity from a ship still out at sea but close to the shore. According to the footage the operation goes on during most nights and has been going on for sometime. Even more interesting is that no follow up story has been carried by the TV station and neither has the government taken any action.

A person interviewed for the clip told the KTN journalists that he suspected the operation had official blessing because it was impossible to carry out without assistance from government security agents.

Looters Scramble Into ODM Ship

archive

Kenyans need to realize now that as much as most of us love ODM, there are now serious doubts that a Raila Odinga presidency will be able to make any serious progress against corruption.

All sorts of deals have been made with the devil himself to ensure that Raila makes it to State House this time round at all costs. So how will President Raila Amollo Odinga turn round and sell out the very characters “who lent him a donkey” for his campaign in the village and on his long journey to State House? Do not forget that Mwai Kibaki faced the same dialemma in 2003 and we all know what the result was.

Notorious Moi bagmen like Rashid Sayad whose idea of doing big time business is making life as difficult as possible for the ordinary Kenyan, have now declared their support for son of Jaramogi.

So has Cyrus Jirongo, the man who helped impoverish millions of Kenyans overnight by distributing an almost endless supply of printed Kshs 500 notes that were stuffed in cartons that reached up to the roof in Anniversary Towers, Nairobi in 1992. Experts say that the inflationary effects of that gimmick are something Kenyans will probably never recover from.

So after securing most of the...

Can President Kibaki Survive This Set Back?

archive

In politics, timing is everything and the message is always much more important than the reality on the ground.

Picture this. When the president is busy campaigning in Western province on his second tour of that province in almost as many months, a major Western province presidential candidate and a Western province political party suddenly turn round and pledge their support for the president’s main challenger.

For months I have been saying here that the true feelings of the people of Kenya will be made known when the campaigns start. In fact this is only the beginning of many other embarrassments this president will face in his campaigns anywhere outside Central province. That is a biting statement, I know, but it is true.

A president who has locked himself in State House and avoided meeting the ordinary people of Kenya and a president who has done that immediately after taking over from a previous holder of the office who as corrupt as he was criss crossed the country meeting ordinary people is a candidate asking for trouble.

According to my information there are many presidential advisors who are currently carrying around a smirk on their faces that say; “I told you so.” Their advice has all along been ignored but now they are going to be vindicated big time.

This is politics and no matter how much the people love you, you can only make so many mistakes and still get away with it. In fact if...

Which Political Grouping Will Win The Most Parliamentary Seats?

archive

I usually don’t give too many predictions but here is one for you. The current political situation will change dramatically before we go to the polls. I will not go further to be as arrogant as some commentators here who are fond of adding statements like; you can take that to the bank.

This time round, it is the electorate who will set the agenda and you can be sure that corruption will be very high on the list of issues that will dominate this election with the Kroll report and other reports that have not yet been released dominating center stage.

Ultimately these will be the elections where Kenyans will vote strongly against corruption.

However the current reality on the ground is that the same party whose presidential candidate seems to be leading in polls, are also currently set to win the highest number of parliamentary seats if the polls were to take place today (but please don’t get too excited, I told you that things are bound to change.)

The issue of predicting which political party will win the majority of parliamentary seats is fairly simple in Kenya. You just need to look at...

The Dirty Game Of Politics

archive

This is a rather fascinating photograph taken in the late 60s shortly before the assassination of Tom Mboya.

The photograph tells a very long complex story. Let me start by introducing the “players” in this “game”. Far left is former president Daniel arap Moi, then Vice President. Next to him is Tom Mboya and the person next to Mboya who seems to be the one who has delivered the joke is one Mbiyu Koinange (grand father to former CNN correspondent Jeff Koinange—this photograph does not show the uncanny resemblance the two have, especially in their eyes and facial features). Far right is Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, founding father and the first president of Tanzania.

At the time this photograph was taken President Kenyatta’s kitchen cabinet were finalizing plans to sort out the “Mboya problem” once and for all. Mboya on the other hand had just completed a clinical operation that had wiped out Jaramogi Oginga Odinga from the political scene into oblivion and irrelevance. The efficiency with which it had been carried out caused the Kenyatta cabinet to fear TJ even more. The three major players in that kitchen cabinet were...

New Information: Mboya Killer Left Plenty Of Clues About Identity Of Men Who Ordered Hit

Mboya Assassination Special

archive

Shocking new revelation: There were 2 other gunmen (just to be sure) at the crime scene and they had trailed Mboya the whole morning

Information that I have just received indicates that the man who was convicted for the murder of Tom Mboya in 1969, Nahashon Njenga, left plenty of clues to tell Kenyans the identity of the people who ordered the hit that shocked the world.

Kumekucha researchers digging deep into information on the trial and also from other sources have come up with plenty of clues that Nahashon Njenga seems to have deliberately left behind to enable Kenyans to piece together parts of this jigsaw puzzle that has never been solved to date. And mostly to answer the question of the identity of the “big man” he referred to whom he said should be asked about the hit.

An interesting aside here is that emerging information also seems to suggest that more than anything else, Mboya was gotten rid of to remove obstacles to the rampant corruption that had already started to take root at the time that made many members of the kitchen cabinet super rich. This is the corruption that set the stage for the Moi era and the massive looting documented in the Kroll report.

But back to Njenga, on being cross examined about his whereabouts on the day of the murder, Mboya’s killer told the hushed court that he had been to President Kenyatta’s...

Fireworks And Dirty Tricks Expected In Rift Valley

archive

The one place where Kenyans should keep a very careful eye on in the run up to the forthcoming polls is the Rift Valley province. There is no doubt that this will be a major political battle ground this time round.

The old Kanu guard led by aging former president Moi will be going all out to ensure that Kanu wins back all their parliamentary seats. Already violence has been unleashed in the province as a mere foretaste of worse things to come with flair ups in Molo and a very serious problem which has persisted in the Mount Elgon area.

It is quite clear that the likes of ODM will not be able to just walk in and take the parliamentary seats up for grabs without some resistance from Moi’s Kanu faction. One of the tricks that Moi will definitely use will be to frighten the ODM candidates in the province (many of whom are known looters and corrupt individuals) that a win for Odinga spells doom for their future safety from prosecution. Moi will also appeal to his community’s basic instincts to protect their own by telling them a vote for President Kibaki is the only way of keeping Moi and his family safe from prosecution and the ridicule of a prison term or a confession session in front of a truth and reconciliation commission.

Information that I am receiving from the ground tells me that...

The Elusive Fourth Province For Mwai Kibaki’s Re-election

archive

President Kibaki is on the campaign trail and once again he is in Western Kenya, actually for the second time in less than a month. So what is it about western province? Why does the president seem to emphasize so much on Western province in his re-election bid?.

Emerging evidence seems to suggest that some recent critical figures obtained from a very recent poll have been deliberately kept out of the public domain. Those figures, it is believed show for the first time, Raila Odinga neck to neck with president Kibaki. There are even those who claim that Raila Odinga is in fact slightly ahead. Kumekucha cannot verify this information for sure at this time. But what I can verify is that the president’s camp is a little anxious about their candidate’s estimated numbers just now.
=================================

President Moi is no longer a young man he once was (left) but the saddest thing is that just when President Kibaki has placed a lot of faith in the former president helping him to get back to State House, there are a number of things that are visibly wrong with Moi. His judgment is NOT what it used to be, for instance. President Kibaki will pay a very high price, just wait and see. (Read Full story NOW)
=================================
Because of those numbers, President Kibaki’s handlers see western province as a key campaign area. They see it as the incumbents’ badly needed fourth province. It is already clear that Kibaki will have a strong showing in 3 provinces where he will easily garner over 45 per cent of the vote. Namely Central, Nairobi and Eastern. Although there are those who argue that Nairobi is cosmopolitan enough to give Kenya’s 3rd president a nasty surprise. Personally I don’t see that happening just yet.

The president’s main challenger, Raila Odinga is looking stronger by the day. Latest estimates show the son of Jaramogi easily capturing a minimum of 45 per cent of the votes in Rift valley, Western, Coast, Nairobi and North Eastern province although the latter with about 200,000 votes in the whole province is only useful in helping a candidate get the mandatory minimum of 25 per cent in 5 provinces required for a presidential candidate to be declared duly elected. Let us not talk about Nyanza for now because Luo Nyanza will vote for Raila almost to a man and the rest of Nyanza has “smelt blood” and seem to be positioning themselves...

Has Mwai Kibaki Ever Run A Successful Presidential Campaign?

archive

That is the question that was posed to Kumekucha this afternoon and I had no option but to answer in the negative. The person posing this philosophical question was trying to answer the nagging question I have been repeatedly posing here. Namely who is the president’s strategist in chief and what are their political credentials? For sure going to Makerere University is one thing, and being streetwise enough to spin a campaign of this magnitude is quite another.

For those who think that the president run a successful campaign in 2002, let me remind you that after the serious near-fatal accident he had, campaign decisions shifted to others and it is people like the late Michael Kijana Wamalwa, Charity Ngilu, Raila Odinga and others who played a key role in his election.

The campaigns that the president oversaw personally was in 1992 and in 1997. In 1992 he was handed probably his most humiliating defeat by Kenneth Matiba who hardly held any campaign meetings to mask his very poor health from the public and yet Kibaki criss crossed the country aggressively campaigning. Kibaki ended up a poor third in those first multi-party presidential elections since independence in 1963.

In 1997, Kibaki came second to Moi but ironically was the main stumbling block to opposition unity which would have comfortably removed Moi from office. Instead he stubbornly stuck to his plan to...

Has Former President Moi Lost It?

Only fools never change their minds. In the wake of rapidly mounting overwhelming evidence, I am now forced to change my position concerning the role and impact retired President Moi will have in the forthcoming polls.

If anything I am now obligated to ask a brand new question; namely, has Moi lost it? Personally I think he has.

Have you seen the former president lately? He walks very slowly and with a limp that he tries very hard to hide (no doubt a result of the knee surgery he underwent as a result of the road accident he was involved in almost 2 years ago.)

But the most telling characteristic that all is definitely not well, is the unfamiliar tired look he carries around with him wherever he goes.

One sign that all is not well is the fact that...

Kibaki Badly Needs Kalonzo Musyoka Now

archive

From my calculations, not only is the Western province presidential vote important for Kibaki but the president also badly needs to woe Kalonzo Musyoka into his camp if he is to stand a chance of defeating the Raila challenge.

This may not be very difficult because Mr Musyoka is very close to former President Moi whom he calls a nationalist. Writers of the Kroll report have painted a totally different figure of the man and if their report is to be believed, the only word to describe Moi that should be preceded by the word national is the word “Looter”. A word or two from Moi would probably be enough to see Kalonzo abandon his presidential ambitions to support a Kibaki re-election.

In fact if Kalonzo were to be his running mate, it will be extremely difficult for Raila Odinga to defeat him for the presidency.

Why Uhuru Announcement Was A Big Blunder For The Kibaki Camp

archive

Uhuru’s announcement has cost the president a lot of votes. Here’s why…

How many mistakes can a presidential candidate make and still get away with it, without being punished for them, even when they are the incumbent? That is a question whose answer Kenyans will soon find out.

However in keeping to my contract with my dear readers (which I take very seriously) I have done a little research on possible voting patterns countrywide and the results have surprised even me. But more on that in my next post.

In the grassroots (where I need not remind you all good folks, is where the majority of votes are) the move by official leader of the opposition, Uhuru Kenyatta to support President’s Kibaki’s re-election bid has cost the president a number of votes.

What is now emerging is a clear anti-kikuyu sentiment that is creeping into some of the president’s long time strongholds. Uhuru’s announcement is being viewed by many ordinary Kenyans as a clear sign of the tribalism that many have suspected runs very deeply through the current administration.

The big danger here is that it hardly matters whether this is true or not. What matters at this juncture and matters terribly, is the public perception of things.

What would I have done if I was running the Kibaki campaign?

I would have made every effort to ensure that the President...

Votes That Raila Odinga Would Get Today From 6 Provinces

archive

Many times for the protection of my sources, I cannot name them. This is the case with the fascinating figures I hereby publish here which show the possible votes Raila Odinga would get, were Kenyans to go to the polls today.

Kindly note that I am NOT making any predictions. Two and a half months is a long time and anything can happen.

Interestingly the estimates exclude Central province and Eastern where it is widely expected that candidate Raila will be whitewashed and will probably get very few votes. However the following is the percentage of votes he would get from the remaining 6 provinces were elections to be held today. The six provinmces covered are Nyanza, Western, North Eastern, Coast, Nairobi and Rift Valley.

Nothing Left To Analyze In Kenyan Politics

archive

The official opposition has joined the government side and the three so-called front runners are all too similar.

All 3 have been in Kanu (need you ask what the motive was?)

Of the three, President Kibaki is the most tolerant as a personality although the tolerance includes tolerance to a vice that is suffocating life out of the country—namely corruption. And tolerance to bad advisors who have some very selfish motives.

To be honest the word tolerance can hardly be used to describe ODM Kingpin Raila Odinga or the boss of the Ho Ndii Em, Kalonzo Musyoka. Did you know for example that Raila Odinga went out of his way and made every effort to have the presidential appointment of Shem Ochudho to the Kenya Pipeline parastatal in 2003 rescinded? Apparently the two had fallen out politically. But tell me what does such venom tell you about this character whom many believe is a front runner to be the chief occupant of State House, come January 2008?

Then in terms of greed for money there is no distinction between the so called GNU and the so-called opposition. In fact this is best portrayed by...

Let history and serious historians on Kenya record this day that the following legislators voted to protect the corrupt, rich fat cats of Kenya by turning the 50-bob-traffic-policemen-arresting KACC into a toothless and irrelevant bulldog.

What Was Gideon Dishing Out Cash For?

My impeccable sources also indicate that many GNU members who would have been forced to take the government position and vote against the evil amendment stayed away.

It is said that they received a fat envelope to stay very far away from parliament during voting. The sources further add that the source of the generosity was the Baringo Central MP who is also the “main star” of the Kroll Report.

Also of interest in the list of shame is the name of one Andrew Ligale, a former Permanent Secretary in government, turned MP. Sometime in 1992, I had a fascinating conversation with Ligale’s then 17 year old son. I believe his name was Eugene, if my memory serves me right. I struck up a conversation with the young man because he had a passion for something I also have a passion for...
