Police Harass Kitui Rights Activist

A rights activist , Mary Mbandi from Kitui has an extremely interesting story to tell. Over the weekend, she was arrested and held for several hours by police who accused her of having threatened the first lady through remarks she supposedly made recently.

She was later released unconditionally after the intervention of her colleagues and lawyers who questioned the circumstances under which she was arrested. She has vowed to sue the government for unlawful confinement.

Mbandi's arrest and subsequent release raises a lot of questions about the often abrasive and eccentric first lady, Lucy Kibaki who is known to take criticism very personally.

Her infamous night-long raid at Nation center that led to the assault of KTN cameraman, Clifford Derrick is still fresh in our minds including last years' incident where she had Limuru politician George Nyanja arrested and questioned by police after he hosted president Mwai Kibaki's supposed second wife, Mary Wambui and introduced her to the public as Wambui wa Mwai.

Back to Mbandi's story, what could possibly have happened is the activist might have made a joke about the first lady or could have criticized her in a public meeting and word got to the first lady through the intelligence system.

Whatever the activist said, it is far fetched to imagine she threatened lady Lucy. How can an ordinary Kenyan of supposedly sound mind threaten the wife of the commander-in-chief? Even if she was taken to court and charged with the offence, majority of Kenyans could have translated it as a simple case of harassment.

The first lady is known to be unpredictable and frequently attacked by violent mood swings which terrifies state house employees and when she is around, tension grips the prestigious address to the extent that even the holder of the highest office of the land is not spared.

It is said that the first lady has been under treatment over the past years having suffered from manic depression and she was put on drugs which if not taken, can result in eccentricity. As a matter of fact, the first lady has contributed to some of the ridiculous actions and decisions taken by the government over certain issues.

Remember the president addressing Kenyans from state house one evening on television only to tell us the composition of his family and assertions that he had only one wife. Who could have prompted him to call the media if not Lucy?

Unfortunately, Lucy's power is boundless to the extent that she impressed upon the president to eject his life long friend and confidant, Matere Keriri from his state house job as comptroller after she disagreed with the diminutive millionaire in Mombasa after he arranged for the president's mistress, Mary Wambui to travel to the coast ahead of the president's visit to Mombasa for the Christmas holidays.

It is an open secret among the ruling elite that the current comptroller of state house, Hyslop Ipu is mostly a frustrated man as most of his responsibilities including the presidents' diary has been taken over by the first lady who's authority goes unchallenged.

This being an election year, we expect to hear much more from the first lady taking into consideration that the president's second wife or is it mistress, Mary Wambui has started campaigning for Kibaki's re-election and she is getting a lot of good publicity to the chagrin of Lucy.

This may look like a small issue to any man but ask the womenfolk about it, they will tell you that such a scenario is bound to cause a world war as it is well known that hell has no fury like a woman scorned.

  2. Mr Anonymous,
The truth shall set you free and dont live in denial. Who doesnt know about Lucy's illness? By the way, go back to nation and standard archives and you will discover that it is that time of the season that lucy gets to go through her problems. It is at this time that she needs the treatment most.
