Latest Githongo Anglo Leasing Tapes: What is The Expected Impact On The Kibaki Government?

Listen to the Mwiraria tapes

Just when former ethics PS John Githongo was starting to sound like a tired old record that keeps on repeating itself, he has made good his promise and delivered fresh evidence in the form of brand new Anglo Leasing tapes. The new tapes clearly implicate former finance minister Daudi Mwiraria in the mega scandal that has refused to go away.

The president's handlers who were beginning to give each other knowing looks over the fact that Mr Githongo was now sounding like a spent force, must now scramble back into action to see what quick repair can be done for this shaky government in the wake of the new allegations. There is actually very little that they will be able to do in damage control.

But what exactly is the expected impact of the latest Anglo Leasing tapes? After all the last time round, opposition king pins like Kalonzo Musoka and Raila Odinga gleefully announced that 2006 would be an election year. This prediction was mainly based on the fact that they considered Githongo's first Anglo Leasing bombshell had enough impact to bring down the Kibaki government. It was not to be. African governments, it seems are made of sterner stuff, or more accurately are capable of hanging on in a way that would make any leech envious.

So the question is; will it be business as usual for the Kibaki government amid the latest damaging salvo unleashed by Mr Githongo?

Not quiet. This time there is one huge difference. And that is the fact that we are in an election year. That fact alone makes a hell of a difference. And those directing Mr Githongo on the timing of his deadly releases must have known that and timed the latest one to be early this year. There is even the possibility that talk of a possible early election spurred them on to release the tapes as they did, before the end of the first month of the year.

There is also something else that is different this time. And that is the fact that a cabinet minister who has recently been cleared and re-instated back into government has once again been implicated. Energy Minister Kiraitu Murungi's name seems to be right at the center of the Anglo Leasing scum as everything seems to have his fingerprints. The minister who wrote poetry in his absence from the government, that basically cried out for re-instatement must now be seething and gritting his teeth and basically cursing the day he met one John Githongo.

The fact that Murungi was cleared, (ignore the AGs meaningless PR statements that investigations are still going on) is extremely damaging to the current administration. It is now clear that what we have here is a government that is not only unwilling to tackle corruption, but one that is deep in the mud of corruption. It is also clear that a huge amount of public funds and resources are being spent to cover up corruption.

In short, this is very, very bad news coming when it has, in an election year. The government of course will keep on denying the allegations but they are the ones now beginning to sound like a tired old record stuck at some point where the same once melodious musical notes and words are being repeated over and over again.

This latest development to me has launched the decline of Narc Kenya, which at this rate spells nothing but doom. By the time we go to the polls Narc-Kenya may have dwindled to be just be as influential as some brief case political parties out there.

Daudi Mwiraria's dramatic statement in the latest tapes that "this is a matter that can bring this government down," may just come to pass, if not sooner then at the ballot box.
