Kenya Post Election Deaths: A Photo Essay

Preamble:
Following publication of an article in this blog titled “Charles Taylor Now, Mwai Kibaki Next?” a number of readers have challenged the author to publish all photographs of victims of police brutality. Note that the bodies are intact but with head/body injuries inflicted by gunfire or other means as opposed to crude weapons. Another reader has aptly suggested “……that this forum provides substantiated facts and insist on use of civil language when exchanging opinions. Otherwise you will find people quoting from it and spreading untruths which will not help us heal the land.”

Other readers may find these photos disturbing but the author’s considered opinion is that the truth shall set us free and put this country on the path to justice.

Congratulations Kumekucha. I am not a Kenyan, but I feel the pain. You can never find the true picture from the Kenyan mainstream media and that's why I agree with Consultants who have questioned the media's intention at http://www.maneconsul.com/html/kenya_crisis.html

OH MY GOOD LORD! OH MY GOD! THESE ARE MY PEOPLE IN KISUMU. SHOT LIKE PIGS! KILLED LIKE FLIES! IS THAT A PREGNANT WOMAN? KIDS? GUN SHOT WOUNDS IN THE HEAD? WILL KENYA EVER BE THE SAME? IS THIS HOW KIBAKI AND MICHUKI QUELL RIOTS? WHAT DID THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN DO? WHY WEREN'T G.S.U.IN ELDORET WHERE PEOPLE WERE BEING BURNT IN CHURCHES?

SO THIS IS THE REVENGE ON LUOS EH? I WISH I COULD GET MY PEOPLE GUNS! THIS IS GENOCIDE! WHAT HAVE THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN DONE? DID THE G.S.U. HAVE RUBBER BULLETS?

IF ONLY I COULD GET A SUICIDE BOMBER!THIS WILL NOT END. THIS WILL NOT GO UNPURNISHED. THERE WILL BE REVENGE. THERE WILL BE VINDICATION!

These dead are mostly innocent Kikuyus butchered by ODM savages. Please make sure the Pentagon get to see these chilling photos. What's Ruto still doing in posh hotels in Nairobi instead of going to put off fires burning in his Eldoret backyard? ODM doesn't want peace but power. Shame!

Did i see a mark on the forehead written kikuyu? I don't know about other parts of this country but in Nyanza all the dead people had gun shots in their body. The other day i asked someone since when did a verdict for looters become shoot to kill? I was not born by the time there was riots in 1969 and in 1992 i was still very young but there is a gentleman an Indian staying in Kisumu who wrote a documentary and said luo riots can only be compared t0 1969 and 1992 when both Mboya and Ouko died but this one was worse. The other bigger question is who is going to rebuild Kisumu? Luckily in Eldoret the houses will be built. My heart goes out to Kisumu but one thing i know Mungiki or no mungiki, Ugandan troops or no, Kenyan police or no....There will always be a remnant!!!!

"DECENCY, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, HAS LITERALLY GONE FLYING THROUGH THE WINDOW!"

This is the lowest of the low! Lower than a snakes belly!

Some people are exploting the tragedy in our country for their own personal profits.

Chris and other Kumekuchans, please respect the dead and let them rest in ETERNAL peace. Imagine if a dead member of your OWN family was photographed and then posted on the world wide web for all to see!

Come on guys! Where's the decency? Those photos are tasteless and sickening, even Americans would never allow their dead soldiers or caskets be photographed.

I have one principle which is even when I go to the funeral, I never line up to have the "last look" of the dead in the coffin. I always want to remember someone as I knew them, wearing a happy face, laughing, joking and smiling...not dead and glum faced in a coffin!!!

Angry Sad& Tired said...

People,people.

I agree that those pictures are horrific but lets stop a minute and remove politics from our eyes. How many of you ever went to the city mortuary(before the election violence) and saw how they store bodies? The pictures there are how the City Mortuary actually looks like.. it is overcrowded bodies are on top of bodies it smells etc.

The pictures from Kisumu laid down covered with sheets should perhaps be the real images of the deaths from the election violence.

Lets not allow others to exploit the situation and take away whatever decency is left from the dead and their families.

I am sincerely againest violence but what role does these picutures serve? What is the intentions of the blogger? Provoke, incite the rest to revenge?

I dont think it is fair to display these type of pictures? You dont morn by removing the dead from the graves. Remember some of these bodies are already burried, why for heaven`s sake do you expose them.

Please be reasonable.

The person who knows the depth of 'the pain of losing a loved' is the person who knew them then.

Kenya as a whole has had what i would call 'a-salted-fresh-cut-deep-wound' that even if it healed...the memory of that pain will never fade away. Remember that as Kenyans and as Human Beings....Our worst bit is that WE NEVER 4Get those who wronged us. Yes we may 4give....but we can never forget....even if we wanted to.

It hurts to see a-Once-Sober-Happy-Nation walking wrecklessly, staggering, with a blurred vision, without Focus...on this Earth Beacause of what 1 or 2 Judas Iscariots' did to Us and our Beloveth Families.....ALL IN The name of Power,Greed,Money,Energy etc YET these are things tht we'll all leave here on earth when we go to our 6 by 3 graves as we rot.

WHY On Earth would someone(With a Sober Mind) SHOOT an INNOCENT BABY and a PREGNANT WOMAN??? WHY??? AN INNOCENT NEIGHBOUR FRM A DIFFERENT TRIBE...bcoz of Tribalism..WHY????? THIS HONESTLY HURTS. IT ACHES. IT PAINS A LOT. WE SUFFER. ITS A PERMANENT WOUND WOUND. Even if GOD delivered us today...Many of us (if not all)will live to Remember And/Or Testify about what we've gone through since Year 2007,Dec 27th and beyond.

Dear Reader,
Dont allow uaself to be manipulated into hatred by this or other bloggers. I dont know if these are Kikuyus or Luos but I do know that there has been enuff blood shed on both sides.

PS: Am not entirely sure that these are not pictures of "business as usual" at the morgue. Bodies are generally piled upon one another until properly identified and claimed.

The atrocities committed by the perpetrators must be brough out in public. People must know that this is what happened to the innocent lives. This is precisely why the government put a media ban so that such atrocities do not come to haunt them. Unfortunately, they forgot Kenyans are intelligent, and media savvy. The souls of the dead will haunt the killers forever, justice shall be served one way or the other!

Phil the UNPROFESSIONAL. Louise Otieno was yester-nite challenging our media this way, "during 9/11, around 3K Americans died. But I havent come across pictures of bodies that were burnt up, heads ripped off, arms and leg cut up by the falling debris". In post-election violence, 300 Kenyans have died, and all the media(esp international) is showing genocide kind of reporting. No, I dont mean we cover up things, but pls save us the details of the dead bodies. RESPONSIBLE REPORTING. In short, remove these pictures from here Mr Phil. Otherwise you are being silly, childish and irresponsible.
Then, you Phil and ODMers, led by Raila, why do you continue to be an authority to yourselves and expect everybody else to believe you? How sure are we that these are photos from the violence? Why should we believe you? And by the way, who are you? What is your occupation? A journalist? hey guy, be responsible.

Anonymous said...

What's all this fascination with dead bodies, some form of fetish? Get a life!

As Macharia Gaitho aptly put it: It's business as usual for the rich while the poor continue to suffer!

Anonymous said...

Its interesting to note that you condemn Phil, whilst these same pictures are available throughout the internet. Its not some secret mission of Phil that he has doctored these pictures. The reality is that these atrocities occurred in Kenya, and people need to know. If you feel that you don't want to see this, then by all means don't attend this blog! Others have a duty to report the truth no matter how grave the situation seems.

Phil, do what you do, and we do appreciate your blog.

Anonymous said...

We have seen the photos. So now, what do we do? Style up Phil. I just lack words!
Even before elections, many more Kenyans have died in Mt Elgon and Kuresoi. Pls provide us the photos Mr. Phil.
Also, kindly provide us with the photos of the wooden church where 35+ women and children were burnt.
Shit Phil and ODM mentality. Stop this madness and stupidity. So you are serving us good, you are serving the kenyan people good by putting up these photos here. Very immature. I think you should get married and concentrate on family life and your head will clear up the ODM cobwebs that are blocking it.

jambs said...

dear phil,

stop the incitement... but i risk entering a fruitless argument with you on whether this is incitement or not. my goal for now is to pose a few issues that need thinking through (it will be an opportunity for bloggers to engage in factual discussion):

Figures from the Daily Nation on voter turnout:
-Sigor 115%
-Eldoret North 116%
-Mosop 97%
-Emgwen 103%
-Baringo N 92%
-Narok South 120%
-Bondo 102%
-Kisumu Rural 120%
-Karachuonyo 94%
-Rangwe 92%
-Ndhiwa 93%
-Nyatike 95%
-Mbita 95%

Highest in both central and Eastern is Othaya: 90%. Dear Kenyans, Evaluate the rigging claims for yourselves!

Kenyans chose Kibaki. He is a national figure! He had over 25% in 7 provinces and even 17% in Nyanza and Raila had that in only 6 provinces and in central and eastern he had just 2% and 5% respectively. (this is the constitutional criteria for measuring national support!)

the EU has been a loser throughout the five years Kibaki has ruled! They have lost billions of Euros in trade to the Far East and they are not happy about that at all. Raila is just an agent - big shame for him to allow to be used.

Kenyans, open your eyes, the war is not within but with those around us!

"lie, lie and top up your lies with more lies and it will become true!" - Hitler, later adopted by Raila.

If u have read the details of **** Morris' Orange Revolution in Ukraine, an important step was "conquer the media." well, ODM tried that almost succefully (God forbid)with local media. the local media has wisened up and really showed their true patriotism. international media - well, thats another story. not totally unexpected though given the above EU connection.

Raila came out before results were released and said that he does not want to pull off an Abiola (please research on Abiola) and does not want to resort to turning Kenya into an Ivory Coast ! He implied he would not accept defeat of any sort.

He also told his supporters to be calm until the announcement. This was to give them a signal to cause chaos upon announcement.

Raila started it and he should stop it. given his EU connection, your guess is good as mine if he will. how do you go to the negotiating table with a condition like "first admit you are a thief..bla..bla"? only if you have no interest in having your condition met!

i am on the ground so i know what am saying.

i may go on for ever, but i give others a chance to give their informed opinion.

WE ARE ALL MISSING THE POINT.

I have taught Journalism for the last six 1/2 years. Most of you have condemned these bloggers for being irresponsible; I don't agree. We must stop burying our heads in some virtual sands and pretend that nothing bad has been happening in Kenya since 30/12/2007. When politicians go round preaching "PEACE" they don't seem to believe in while disregarding the atrocities already committed against a section of the population, it's both wrong to the dead and the relatives of the dead.

Let's visit the victims in Eldoret who took issues with Kibaki when he tried to tell them that local Chiefs would look into their problems... that's how victims feel... "their sufferings is NO BIG DEAL and should just be brushed off as politicians have bigger issues to deal with..."

The denialists on this blog are no different from the politicians living in fortified homes and posh hotels who pretend that those who have died (killed or committed suicide) didn't, don't and will never matter...

If we were to rewind a bit, when the war in Iraq started in 2003, most American media shied away from providing the true casualty figures. This led to most Americans and the rest of the world failing to truly understanding the real effects of the Iraqi war. It was until 2005 that NBC decided to air the names of US service men and women who were dying, killed or otherwise in Iraq, that the support for war died off. It is thus irresponsible of the local media to join the denialists' bandwagon. Such blogs are just providing the aspect of information to the public that has been ignored by the self-serving media. Responsible journalism also means providing the truth... burying the status in the country at some dark corners of our newsrooms is and will never be the answer.

Reconciliation also means people knowing and understanding what exactly happened. DON'T HIDE THE INFO

THOSE CALLING ON THIS BLOGGER TO REMOVE THE PICTURES ARE CULPABLE AND THIS EXPLAINS WHY THEY REMAIN ANONYMOUS...

Dear Dr Yusuf:

I concur with your comments! Its not the time to bury our heads, we as citizens of Kenya must bring these atrocities in the open. The media in our country has abdicated its role in not reporting such issues.

jambs said...

Dr. Yusuf,

I respect your credentials. i have nil experience in journalism myself save for reading newspapers etc.

I agree this stuff needs to be put in the open...but responsibly. what Phil is trying to potray (probably unknowingly) is the biased notion that:
1. all the bodies are of people killed with bullets.
2. all the bodies are of innocent people (i.e. none of these people died as a result of looting and refusing to heed police orders, for example)

surely there is no evidence of such conclusions so far except Phil's word and that of biased bloggers. morgues dont usually separate bodies based on cause of death! a body lying in the morgue could be a result of malaria, AIDS, TB , road accident, police bullets etc.

What Phil is doing is journalism alright but 'irresponsible journalism' if i may.

in any case, i dont see what positive thing one can accomplish by publishing pictures of bodies in the morgue! why not publish those of police actually kiling innocent people. that will have a bigger (and probably the right) impact on readers.

I Keep saying I'm very angry with Kenyans at this point in time myself included. We like to pretend and hide our head in the sand. We sing patriotic songs and say how peaceful we are and then pray that all will be well. Others are saying Raila and Kibaki should solve the problem??
Does anyone else see how foolish this kind of strategy is?? Why are we leaving our fate in the hands of people who have caused the problem specifically Kibaki.
This guy if he cared even an inch about anything or anyone would have stepped down on day 1 and called for a re-run.
If we all took our stand as Kenyans we could force Kibaki out of office repeat the elctions- let him win fairly if he is deserving!!
If we took our firm stand as Kenyans Kivuitu would be in exile or jail bcoz its unacceptable what he has done to our country!!
If we took our firm stnd as Kenyans we can salvage our democratic space.
Why is it that in this country the losers are always the winners and the winners are always the losers since this country got independence??
Why are we so scared of this one dangerous man KIBAKI that we are allowing him to tuin our country??
The Panua mongers on this site and people excited about Kalonzo's Vp ship I hope you will cheer when Martha Karua becomes president in 2012 with votes from Central province only??

Phil something must be done now to stop this madness. Did you see the two different pics of Nrb, One group so devastated and another one enjoying themselves in Nandos and playing computer games..It was business as usual.
A friend of mine came from Eldoret today, She is kale and do you know what she told me..Is that Kales are beating kisii's coz of the beating that Ruto suffered when Nyachae unleashed chinkororo on them and they are even demanding the shoe that remained there...Is is no longer about election results and they are sharpening their mishales saying they are waiting for Mungiki who they have been told will be coming to attack them. Do you know that Bonny Odinga of KTN went to pokot/marakwet border before elections and bought a gun at only 9000/- and trust me he passed all the roadblocks without policemen stopping them...I dont want to imagine what might happen if people decide to throw caution out of the window.
The other day a relief chopper went to Emgwen and they thought it was a chopper carrying Mungiki and they waited for it with mishales? Gosh for how long will we go on like this? I fear for Kenya..........The only consolation i have is that the buck doesn't stop with Kibaki neither Raila...It stops with God may He come through for us.

Jambs- I read your previous post na ueshenzi kama hiyo is what is taking us nowhere! About 120% turn out in RV and Nyanza. This is what Karua and Kimunya and passing on to you people and you hold as bible truth.
I cannot calm down and will not calm down??
Does Kibaki care about the thousands of the displaced Kenyans??
Why is he sending police to gun down kids?
I was in RV and if you were found carrying a parraffin kibuyu the police would shoot??
Why are you people helping to instill a culture of impunity in our xtry??
If there are anomalies all over wouldn't a re-run be best for all??
Do you think Kibaki will rule for 5 years with the police??
Is he going to provide 24hr security to the displaced pple to build their houses and resettle??
This mani s colder that the Antartica I tell you !!!

Riftvalley war i dont think it is about elections. I believe this is a feud that has been simmering for long, coz we had the same clashes in 92, 97, 2002, 2007 these kales believe they are in bondage and they need someone to help them. You know one told me wageni hawawezi kuja kutudictatia what to do in our own land...So i think we should go much deeper and see what is wrong and fight this disease...How come the luos and Kisiis who are only separated by a road dont fight apart from this election, there is Nandi on the other part of Miwani/koru/Muhoroni border and they don't fight, we have luhyas and luos in Emuhaya/luanda living together. Not that i am justifying anything but i believe dialogue is the key to the fighting in RV... I am told a man who had built a school in Eldoret asked people to burn the house but not the school coz it was going to benefit them ..You know what they told him...Tutajenga yetu....And how come Luhya/Bukusus leaving hand in hand with kales and we dont see the fighting???? I need help to understand somethings

jambs said...

@anon,

Ok. you have a right to stay angry, but it wont do you or anyone else any good.

Honestly, if you manage to make everyone here fired up, then what?

i d be glad, very glad if, fo example, when you say that 120% turnout in nyanza is ushennzi, then you gave us the correct figure. no one (not even i) can pretend that they know beyond any doubt the correct figures (or even who actually won the presidential race). but an attempt can be made to establish the truth. that is what am doing.

you think am happy that there is chaos in my country? you think i give a damn who between raila and kibaki is the president? i dont!

but as someone said, The truth shall set us free.

Phil, I commend you for posting these photos. We need to see what is going on. A violent death is a terrible end for anyone, no matter the tribe. Just like the burning of the church cannot be justified, let's not say people were killed because they refuse to obey police orders. If that was simply the basis, the police and GSU would be all over Eldoret and the rest of the RV, Coast shooting everyone who refused to obey their orders. Phil, thanks again for having the cajones to tell the truth when everyone would rather you tell us otherwise. If you hadn't done so, these same folks would be belching out loud about how you are posting stories without factual backing. Now you have the photos and they claim these aren't authentic. Violence, propaganda and misinformation - that has been the primary ODM strategy for handling the inevitable loss of 2007 elections.

These are photos from Morgues. On close inspection, only one appears to have gunshot wounds to the head. What evidence are you talking about Phil?

Anyway the blood of Kenyans is in the hands of Raila and Ruto. Nothing prevented them from coming out strongly for peace.

With the majority in parliament, they could pass laws to fix the rigging problem permanently and to improve conditions for the poor.

They could have used the next 5 years to push for the change they promised through PARLIAMENT and win over the Kenyans who did not vote for them in order to guarantee a landslide victory for Raila in 2012.

It is a well known fact that ODM Supporters started the murders by targeting Kikuyus.

Those who Murdered their neighbours wives, husbands and children have brought a curse on themselves and their families. May God have Mercy on them.

Shame on you fellow Kenyans for being so cold blooded as to support cold blooded murderers.
