It seems that the finances of two leading ODM presidential candidates appear to be already stretched beyond limits.
Kalonzo Musyoka yesterday jetted out from Nairobi heading to the United States for the second time in three months as he desperately looks out to the Diaspora to raise funds for his presidential campaign.
Raila Odinga, is no different, and is expected to jet out for the same destination next week and will visit several states hosting US$ 100 per plate dinners all over the place as he also scrambles for State house.
The two have been common faces in the United States where they have launched spirited efforts to convince Kenyans living there to chip in towards their campaign kitty with Odinga being miles ahead of Musyoka as his tours seem to be better organized.
It also goes without saying that majority of Kenyans in the United States hail from the Luo community and with politics of ethnicity having been deeply entrenched in Kenya, Odinga has been receiving much warmer receptions as compared to Musyoka.
What the two have failed to realize is that Kenyans living in the U.S not rich and most are struggling to make ends meet and its not like they always have dollars to spare especially to contribute to politicians just to help make their dreams of power come true.
Majority of Kenyans in the United States are students or went there to study and dropped out before completion only to engage in informal employment and are living there as illegal immigrants.
Not only are they cash strapped for dollars but are living in constant fear of being discovered by immigration officials and being deported back to Kenya. However, there are those who are living the American dream and have made it big in the land of opportunities. Apparently, these are few and far between not to mention the fact that they are too busy to attend dinners of Kenyan politicians begging for funds in a foreign country.
Raila will visit Minnesota, North Carolina, and Florida in the United States. He will then tour a few cities in the United Kingdom. Kalonzo's schedule is yet to be released. These begging missions which are often characterized with stinging attacks on their motherland, have become a source of great irritation and embarrassment to the Kibaki administration.
