The Githongo Tapes: Is President Kibaki On Them?

The million dollar question on everybody's mind is did John Githongo also
record the president in his tapes and is he planning to release them at an opportune time (like just before the elections)?

It is likely that Githongo also recorded his conversations with the president taking into consideration that if he managed to tape senior government ministers, what could stop him from recording his obstinate boss who was condoning corruption by failing to act against the culprits?

And if Githongo has recordings between him and Kibaki, it is likely that he will conveniently release them just before the coming general elections in a bid to 'politically finish' his former boss hence settling scores once and for all.

Others are of the opinion that Githongo must be having lots of information concerning corruption in Kenya considering the way his hosts—the British government—are treating him.

It is not clear how the former PS managed to flee the country and settle so fast in Oxford, England after what must have been months of preparation carrying his deadly audio tapes all over the place. Though his relationship with the then ambassador, Mr Clay was said to be more than cordial with talk that they were extremely close personal friends and may have seen eye to eye on personal as well as political issues.

There is no way the British government could accord Githongo so much preferential treatment if he did not have major dossiers concerning the high and mighty in Kenya as far as corruption was concerned.

For Githongo to have fled Kenya without being kicked out of State house first, he must have been in possession of damaging evidence against his boss and chose to flee before he was found with it and probably charged with treason, a capital offence which carries the death sentence.

It might only be a matter of time before Kenya's eccentric president will be heard on tape attempting to compromise Githongo on the multi-million scandal which has refused to go away and will be the biggest burden that the Kibaki administration will have to carry as they try to patch up the damage and re-launch their re-election strategy.

And again, the nagging question springs up again, is Githongo working with ODM-Kenya to malign the Kibaki government ahead of the elections on the promise that he will be given a big job if ODM wins the polls? This is what cheap propagandists would have us believe. The truth is that this Githongo thing is much bigger than ODM-Kenya.
