Police Execution Of Simon Matheri Ikere: What Were The Lies All About? | Police brutality in Kenya | Secret police methods in Kenya | Human rights violation by Kenya Police

Kenyans may have gotten a rare glimpse into police methods one day when the Kenya police insisted on peddling fiction, despite the fact that there were numerous witnesses at Athi River who saw and heard exactly what happened as one of Kenya's most wanted violent gangsters was gunned down outside his house. Not to mention photographs that communicated more than a thousand words and spoke loud and clear.

The widely circulated photo of Simon Matheri Ikere. Does he not look so innocent and the sort of polite, handsome guy you wouldn't mind your daughter going out with? Police accuse him of rape, murder, bank robberies etc. His trade mark was introducing himself before shooting his hapless victims for no apparent reason

TV footage at the scene and press photographs clearly showed Simon Matheri Ikere felled with his hands behind him, as if he had been handcuffed.

Ikere's wife told journalists how her husband had stepped out of the house with his hands on his head and wearing nothing else but boxer shorts.

What followed was, surrounded by dozens of heavily armed policemen, Ikere was handcuffed with his hands behind him while police confirmed that it was really him and not somebody else. He was then shot through the head at point blank range and fell on his side from the impact of the bullet that killed him instantly. It appears death came a little unexpectedly unlike in the case of many of his victims whom it is said Matheri would introduce himself to before shooting to death.

For the purpose of press photos, the handcuffs were then removed, but the hands stiffly remained behind Matheri's back.

The police version of what happened was that Matheri came out with a gun in his hands and in front of the policemen tried to cock his gun. It was while he was doing this, that he was shot. Actually it is highly unlikely that the police found any weapons at the Matheri house. And why would Matheri want to cock his gun while outside when he would have done it inside and come out firing?

One of the fascinating things about police accounts with gangsters is that they have always lacked imagination. Good lying calls for at least a little imagination. For instance, for years the police story I numerous encounters with thugs has always been as follows;

The thugs spotted the police and defied orders to surrender by firing at the police. "Our boys then returned the fire," the always say.

In fact on numerous occasions innocent, unarmed Kenyans have been killed in this way. However the escalation of crime in Kenya today is such that in Ikere's case most Kenyans clearly support the action taken by the police in killing this thug who hardly ever showed any mercy to his victims. Kenyans at the scene of the shooting were clearly delighted at qht had happened, not to mention some of those who viewed the body at the City Mortuary telling journalists that they were going to slaughter a goat to celebrate the felling of Simon Matheri Ikere.

So why do the police insist on peddling their unimaginative fictional account of the events that took place in Athi River?

We Have No Idea Who To Vote For, Frustrated Kenyans Say

Talking to ordinary Kenyans these days, there is no mistaking their determination to vote out most of the jokers currently polluting the August house with their presence which has brought hardly any benefit to anybody except to themselves with high salaries and perks.

One Kenyan told this blogger of several cases of MPs in their home area who were paupers when they were voted into parliament in 2002 but whose lives have changed rather dramatically. Another Kenyan even pointed to the case of Anania Mwaboza, the Kisauni legislator (Coast province) who went to parliament to replace the late Karisa Maitha. He has hardly been in parliament for two years and yet he seems to have acquired plenty of wealth very swiftly. Mwaboza's election is currently the subject of a dramatic court case in Mombasa.

Awareness amongst the Kenyan voters even in rural areas has dramatically been heightened and it is clear that this time round, money will hardly influence the proceedings.

Still the worry of many Kenyan voters, is who to vote for. Interestingly out of the 10 odd wananchi that this blogger spoke to at a major cosmopolitan town in Kenya which is populated by many different tribes hailing from diverse parts of the country, all agreed on one thing; that they will prefer to vote for outsiders and people who have never been to parliament before.

Fortunately it is still very early and things are bound to get clearer as the polls draw nearer towards the end of the year. It seems that Kenyan voters can hardly wait for their chance to speak loudly and clearly to the ninth parliament.

Vigilante Group Terror in Kisii Leads To Brutal Killings Of Suspects

Under inexplicable circumstances, a vigilante group in Kisii central known as Sungu Sungu has been brutally carrying out executions of suspected gangsters and criminals in a manner that has left villagers terrified and at a loss on what to do since the provincial administration is sitting back and doing nothing.

The police are not even keen to investigate and make arrests following the murders of the suspected thieves, which is carried out late in the night by a group of between fifty to seventy youths armed with crude weapons.

A widow was shown on television recently narrating how the group suspected her husband of being a criminal only to write a letter to him to the effect that they were coming for his head. The matter came to pass as they subsequently attacked and chopped off his head.

The notorious group also has powers to deny relatives of their victims the chance to bury them in their homes and usually instructs them to dispose of the bodies at public cemeteries in Kisii town.

Not only does the group kill, they also burn and loot their victim's property and usually write letters to potential victims accusing them of their crimes before carrying out the 'judgment' which is usually death by lynching late into the night.

Surprisingly, chiefs and their assistants and even the police don’t bother to interfere with most locals assuming that the government approves of what the vigilante group is doing though some of its victims' family members have said many of the people killed have been innocent.

The source of information that the terror group relies on is not known and villagers suspect that it could be the provincial administrators who are giving these names and in effect signing death warrants of innocent villagers.

Apparently, the politicians have also chosen to ignore the issue in spite of numerous calls to them from the villagers to intervene and end these senseless killings, which are carried out in the most brutal manner.

It is becoming clear that the government approves of what the Sungu Sungu is doing and actually believe that they are effectively combating runaway crime in Kisii by executing dangerous thieves. However it seems that they there are also innocent people who are dying as a result of wrong information, which is never verified let alone authenticated prior to execution.

Kenya has a history of vigilante groups, which have over stepped their powers and committed atrocities among their own people, but nothing like Sungu Sungu has ever been seen in the country before. They make the dreaded Mungiki sect look like a bunch of kindergarten kids.

It is now up to the government to step in and end this madness once and for all by arresting and prosecuting these youths who have become a law unto themselves as they go about carrying out summary executions with impunity.

Charity Ngilu and Musikari Kombo: What Are They Up To?

Barely a fortnight after tearing into President Kibaki, health minister Charity Ngilu was at it yesterday again and dismissed the Narc-Kenya party which Kibaki intends to use as a vehicle for his re-election bid later this year.

Ngilu who is chairperson of the original Narc says she's out to strengthen the original Narc and probably enable her to forge a coalition with other parties in a bid to have a formidable force to take on Narc-K and ODM-Kenya.

Flanked by Ford-Kenya chairman and minister for local government Musikari Kombo, Ngilu is now emerging as the leader who will pioneer the so called 'third force' and perhaps shore up many dwindling political fortunes ahead of the forthcoming general elections which are to be held on or before December 29.

Kombo is finding himself between a rock and a hard place as he is not a darling of the government of national unity (of which he is a prominent member of) and neither is he comfortable with ODM hence joining Ngilu and fronting a third force could be the only option available to him at this juncture.

Both Kombo and Ngilu have a lot in common not to mention that they head political party's which are mere shells and don’t have much clout. Both are also currently facing stiff resistance from within their own party ranks.

Kombo and Ngilu also have presidential ambitions but these seem to have been dimmed over the past few months following the political developments in the country, which does not favor them.

All the favorites for the presidency besides Kibaki are in ODM and it is only after they elect or select their presidential candidate that Kombo and Ngilu will have a chance to evaluate their position.

Chances are that neither Ngilu nor Kombo will ever rule Kenya but they can still have the opportunity of serving successive governments as ministers or even vice president's but this will all depend on how they play their cards from now until the much awaited December polls.

Three Die Of Cholera At Kamiti Prison

Three prisoners contracted cholera at the Kamiti maximum prison and subsequently died at Kenyatta national hospital shortly after admission. About forty others were admitted in serious condition.

Unfortunately, the man in charge of the prison has been denying the deaths and admissions even after the hospital had confirmed the fatalities and instead arrogantly told journalists that he was not a doctor.

This incident goes a long way to show that the governments efforts to make the civil service more friendly to the public is not getting to all places or they are still many thick skinned or thick headed public officials who will never understand what good public relations is.

What the prison boss does not know is that journalists are the worst people to display arrogance to and he will surely live to regret the big lie he told yesterday.

Warden Njuguna, is more of a liability than an asset to the prison department but according to him he must have thought he was doing the right thing by trying to conceal the deaths so as not to paint the prison in bad light.

This was the way of thinking during the Moi era where sycophancy, lies and deceit were the hallmarks of the civil service and promotions were actually based on how good you were in perpetuating the three in defense of the government.

It has been established that the disease outbreak was probably caused by a burst sewer line which was spewing waste near the kitchen and sleeping quarters of the prisoners. It could be possible that Mr Njuguna was aware of the problem but chose to 'bury his head in the sand' and not deal with it.

Unknowingly, it is characters like him who give the government a bad name as this are the types who will even attempt to convince you during the day that it is night if it suits their purposes.

The government spokesman Dr Alfred Mutua who also doubles up as the states public relations man should address problems like this prison mess and talk to the press instead of living everything to the arrogant Njuguna. This is a much better and effective way of building the governments image than distributing stickers saying 'najivunia kuwa mkenya' which Kenyans have changed to 'navumilia kuwa Mkenya', partly because of people like Mr Njuguna of Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.

The Real Source Of Power At Nation Newspapers

In the Bible story about Samson, we are told his source of superhuman strength was in an unlikely place that would have been impossible for his enemies to discover had he not gone and blurted it out under duress from his extremely beautiful and desirable Philistine wife, Delilah. The source of power was in his long hair, which had never seen a razor.

The same can be said about the most popular newspaper in East and Central Africa and probably beyond. Ask anybody, including journalists, what the real source of success and "power" for the Nation is and you will receive all sorts of answers. They will include the fact that the newspaper has some of the best journalists led by some of the most experienced editors (albeit sex perverts, according to junior female staff members). Others will point you in the direction of the newspapers editorial policy.

However the real source of power for the Nation newspapers is in the most unlikely place and because many of those who have found themselves pitted against the newspaper's position at the helm of the daily newspapers industry in Kenya have failed to understand this, it has been impossible for them to challenge the Nation let alone unseat her.

The Nation's real source of power is in its' distribution system. Distribution is something that bores many marketers, let alone journalists trained to deal with more exciting things like tomorrow's splash. Yet it is the key to the success of any product, more so a daily newspaper.

It is instructive that right from the launch of the Nation's first title, Taifa Leo, in 1960, the media experts brought here by the Aga Khan immediately identified the key to unseating the East African Standard, which was then the leading newspaper. This led to the introduction of the vendor system for the first time in the country. Little wonder that to date the Nation circulation department considers the vendor system as their property (that is a story for another day). Previously newspapers in Kenya were sold through "proper outlets" like shops, grocery stores and the likes.

The new vendor system spread its tentacles from the city to virtually every small town and village in the country. It took a while to built but once in place, nobody was going to sell more newspapers in Kenya than the Daily Nation.

You can probably produce a better newspaper than the Nation and even a better, more sensational splash every time, but it matters little because simple arithmetic will tell you that whatever you do, you cannot outsell the Nation, not when they have thousands more outlets than anybody else has.

It is this distribution system that makes the Daily Nation such a powerful political tool that decides general elections in the country. It is also this system that will give the newspaper windfall profits during this election year.

Under former CEO Wilfred Kiboro, a smart move further enhanced the amazing Nation distribution system and now makes it very difficult for any competitor to challenge the newspapers position. The introduction of the Nation courier services division, not only solved the problem of the escalating costs of maintaining this distribution network, but it also created a new profit center at a time when the demand for courier services has gone through the roof mainly being fuelled by the spread of the Internet and mobile telephony. One of the aspects that caused costs to begin eating away at circulation income was the fact that vehicles that deliver newspapers return empty or with bulky but worthless unsold newspapers. Now space in the van is occupied on both trips by profitable courier cargo.

This is one secret that would have greatly helped NMG CEO make quality and decisive decisions when the current crisis first reared its' ugly head (as it is, it is now too late to do anything decisive). Contrary to what many think, the real power and strength of the Nation newspaper is not in its' troubled editorial department. You can replace virtually the whole editorial department tomorrow and the newspaper will continue as if nothing happened (sorry, my journalist colleagues, I know how this makes you feel).

Over the years there have been many cases where senior writers and editors at Nation have risen so quickly in popularity that it has gone into their heads and they have entertained the thought that they may just be indispensable. Alas, many times they have left and the Nation has continued as if nothing happened, all because it never crossed anybody's mind to shave the long hair.

John Troon's shocking revelation about Moi and Biwott

Simon Matheri Ikere Surrendered But Was Still Gunned Down: Why Jubilant Kenyans Now Support Extra-Judicial Killings

The Kenya television network (KTN) last night conducted a fascinating opinion poll asking whether the execution by the police of a most wanted criminal was justified even after the notorious killer surrendered to authorities early yesterday morning in Athi River town.

Amazingly, 61% approved of the police action of gunning down Simon Matheri Ikere while 39% said the action was extra-judicial and he should have been arrested and charged in court for the crimes he allegedly committed.

According to the police, Matheri was almost single-handedly responsible for the upsurge in crime-related killings in Nairobi for the past few months and had also been linked to various car- jackings, bank robberies and murders.

His photograph was distributed to the media last week along with those of five others who police said were the most wanted criminals and cash rewards were offered to those who would pass information leading to their arrest nay, gunning down.

Matheri bit the bullet and knew it, by walking out of his estranged wife's house in Athi river with his hands up and dressed in only boxer shorts to prove to the police he had no concealed weapons, never-the-less, he was shot in the head after police confirmed he was 'their man'.

His death was music to the ears of those who lived in Gachie near Nairobi, the gangsters former abode as they celebrated and rejoiced on learning of his death. Hundreds of wananchi personally went to the city mortuary to confirm that he was actually the one that had been killed and came out smiling and singing while others said they would slaughter a goat to celebrate.

Why do majority of Kenyans prefer that the police should execute dangerous criminals and not grant them their right to trial before a court of law?

For starters, Kenya's judicial system is notorious for corruption and many people feel that if one is rich or has the right 'connections', there is no way you can go to jail even if enough evidence has been adduced to warrant a conviction.

In Matheri's case, he could easily have used his ill-gotten wealth to bribe a magistrate or even a judge and get released on a 'technicality' to the chagrin of law abiding citizens and his surviving victims.

And again, prosecutors in the country are known for their shoddy jobs not to mention that they are poorly paid police officers who are not properly trained in law and their evidence is usually pocked holes by shrewd lawyers who can easily get an acquittal for a violent robber.

It is also possible that police don’t have any tangible evidence to link Matheri to most of the crimes they accuse him of and if brought before a court of law, the only charge that can stick is being found with a firearm without a license, which is a minor bailable offence. He could then have been convicted to serve a few years in jail for the firearms charge. Facilities in the country are such that it is very difficult to even link weapons to a murder or violent crime.

All in all, this means that arresting Matheri and taking him in alive would have posed major challenges to the police in getting a successful prosecution. And because of the rampant corruption in the prisons department Matheri could even have been released pretty soon, long before the bad memories of his actions ould have had a chance to fade from the minds of the general public.

The police will also be happier to execute instead of arresting as this will usually save them a lot of time which is scarce considering their enormous workload of fighting brutal criminals every day who have just as deadly fire power as the police.

Then again, there is the issue of Matheri having had police contacts who assisted him. It could be very embarrassing for the gangster to go public with his list of contacts so it is usually much better that he dies as dead men tell no tales.

With the current alarming rate of criminal activities in the country, majority of Kenyans are practically living under siege and when a violent criminal is shot dead, it comes as a sigh of relief to many who consider one less bad guy has checked out for the next world and won't bother them again, not in this life, to say the least.

John Troon's shocking revelation about Moi and Biwott

Why The Gunning Down Of Kenya's Most Wanted Criminal Will Not Bring Down The Crime Rate

Kenyans woke up to 'wonderful' news yesterday morning that one of the most wanted gangsters in the country had been shot dead outside the home of his estranged wife in Athi river after surrendering to the police.

At last, Kenyans were convinced that the security apparatus was finally 'waking up' from their deep slumber, which saw criminals operating unabated, wrecking havoc and getting away with it to the chagrin of law-abiding citizens who have been living in fear.

The execution of Samuel Matheri Ikere, a man credited with bank robberies and at least 8 murders could be 'good news' but this does not mean that the crime rate will come down. And neither will this latest development cause criminals to think twice before engaging in the dangerous trade. You see these are not the sixties or seventies.

There is a new brand of hardened criminals that have surfaced in the underworld that has even puzzled law enforcers and citizens alike. Unlike in the old days where the gunning down of a criminal would affect his colleagues who would be badly shaken and probably quit for a while, today's gangsters are a hardened lot who are as vicious and brutal as they come.

This can be proved by the fact that criminals don’t fear policemen anymore and even carry out revenge missions against law enforcers to the amazement of the public. This year alone, about 20 policemen have been shot dead by gangsters.

Today's criminals are also much younger compared to those of yester-years and we now have 16 year old kids wielding automatic rifles menacingly in the country's highways as they steal cars and kill motorists when they feel like it, even when they offer no resistance.

This teenagers live a disillusioned life where they see themselves as heroes and not villains and not surprising, their heroes are gangster music rappers like the late Tupac Shakur, Snoopy Doggy Dog and the late notorious B.I.G. who all glorify violence especially the so called drive-by –shootings popularly known as 7-11 in the United States. It is no accident that one of the most popular slogans in the industry is "get rich or die trying."

The minds of these care free youths have been poisoned further by the 'video culture' in middle and low class neighborhoods where video houses show movies that glamorize crime and violence linking it to the so called 'good life' filled with beautiful women and exotic cars not to mention raw power and influence.

For instance, in an estate like Kayole in Nairobi, six in every ten teenagers have seen an illegal firearm and probably know the basics of how to operate it with most of them being sucked into criminal activities through peer pressure from their neighbors and friends who convince them that they are too sly to get caught or get killed.

A friend of mine once visited a bar in the area during the day and was shocked that there were a few teenagers shooting pool who ALL had concealed pistols which were visible under their belts when they bent down to strike the ball on the table.

The most unfortunate fact about all this is that the parents of these teenage gangsters only come to know of their son's activities rather late when they have been shot dead or wounded during their deadly missions.

With an obscene unemployment rate, youngsters joining the underworld is common these days as they have very limited choices to eke out a honest living and have given up on life and getting shot dead in a robbery gone awry will be the last thing to bother their young minds as they go about their criminal activities.

For the girls, the only outlet for them is turning into prostitution or going after elderly rich men who 'keep' them as mistresses and supply them with all their requirements including a roof over their heads, clothes and food in exchange for sex whenever they feel like.

It has now become evident that fighting crime in Kenya will have to be one big team effort that focuses on long term gains rather than just quick fixes. We will not succeed by only offering cash for illegal fire arms (as important as that initiative is) but it will also be important to get the youth busy through sports and creating jobs for them so as to end idleness and a sense of hopelessness among these most productive age group which has now turned out to be the most destructive.

ODM-Kenya's Plan To Stop The General Elections: Does It Have Popular Support?

Majority of Kenyans are sick and tired of their members of parliament and the move by ODM-Kenya to stop the general elections in December if the government does not agree to reforms, will be the biggest blunder on the movement's part.

Kenyans can't wait for the general elections to vote out these greedy legislators who have upped their salaries and allowances to the tune of almost Sh 1 million per month, over US$ 14,000 in a country where over 70% of the population lives below the poverty line on less than a dollar a day.

Over 50 MPs endorsed the ODM-Kenya move last weekend in a pro-reforms rally under the banner of a loose coalition of organizations which favor some changes to the constitution before the elections failure of which they will mobilize Kenyans to stop the polls which must be held on or before December 29.

Those on the forefront of the no-reforms-no-elections crusade are leading presidential aspirants Kalonzo Musyoka, Raila Odinga and official opposition leader Uhuru Kenyatta among others.

It is common knowledge among majority of Kenyans that over 80% of the current MPs will never see the doors of parliament after the general elections and Kenyans can't wait to kick them out as there are plenty of aspirants lining up and prepared to take over from the greedy and lazy lot.

If ODM does not wish to un-popularize themselves with the voters, they have to seek alternative methods to push for minimum reforms but not delaying the elections as majority of Kenyans want the general elections to go ahead as scheduled. Several opinion polls in recent times have confirmed this fact.

And again, stopping the elections will be contravening the constitution as this will mean extending president Kibaki's five year term and yet the law says the president has the powers to dissolve parliament and call for general elections at any time but does not have power to overstay and extend his time at the helm.

It has now become clear that the ODM quest for using elections to force minimum reforms is for their own selfish interests as they have not consulted Kenyans over the stoppage of polls and as I have said before and will say again, with or without a new constitution, Kenyans can still vote out president Kibaki even if the current constitution favors him and does not provide for a level playing field.

The way things are now, the government is dragging its feet over the minimum reforms debate and chances are Kibaki won't allow the reforms to be conducted before the polls which means the opposition should try other avenues, maybe through parliament first before calling for a drastic measure like stopping general elections.

What ODM-Kenya must realize is that they can't take the goodwill of Kenyans for granted. Especially after the overwhelming support they received during the referendum where the government was defeated. It is therefore imperative that they consult the people before making these selfish decisions that will have far reaching effects on Kenya's political landscape.

Something else, ODM should never assume that they are always right and if they intend to be dictatorial and impose orders on their supporters without consulting, they will only realize then that Kenya is a democratic country and their supporters will defect to other political party's, which are more sensitive to their views and aspirations.

Kenyans hold general elections after every five years and whatever differences the opposition have with the government, whether its over the constitution or whatever, majority of Kenyans are already prepared to go to the polls on or before December 29 this year and they are really looking forward to making their statement at the ballot box.

Now KUJ Demands The Resignation Of Wangethi And Odindo

…Union Also Demands Reinstatement Of Crime Editor

According to impeccable sources within the Nation Media group, Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) officials and representatives visited the CEO Linus Gitahi yesterday over the ongoing crisis at the media house. Also present at the meeting was the group's Human Resources Services manager Swaleh Shariff.

The KUJ officials demanded the resignation of Wangethi Mwangi and Joseph Odindo, the two mangers who have been linked to the sex-for-promotions scandal at the respected media house. The resignations are supposed to pave way for proper investigations over the allegations leveled at the two in anonymous letters posted on the Internet.

Interestingly the issue of crime editor Stephen Muiruri was raised with the KUJ officials demanding his immediate reinstatement since he resigned under duress. This seems to suggest that there is a link between Muiruri's departure on 2nd February this year, and the sex-scandal anonymous letters. Muiruri himself says in a leaked letter published elsewhere in this blog that the senior managers at the media house suspected that he was the main brains and author behind the anonoymous letters that have shocked Kenyans. Muiruri however says that none of the managers dared bring up the issue and instead concentrated on some fabricated and unsubstantiated claims about Muiruri's conduct.

NMG CEO Linus Gitahi scheduled another meeting with the Union officials for tomorrow (Wednesday) saying that he needed to consult before giving a verdict on the issue.

The union officials did not mince any words in pointing out to Mr Gitahi that it was imperative that he preserves the media group's reputation and independence by sacking all managers, no matter how senior they were, who preyed on female members of staff, some of whom were people's wives. Interestingly Mr Gitahi is said to have also pleaded with the Union officials to keep the meeting a top secret.

Meanwhile in a related development, the much awaited so-called "water tight dossier" on the sexual exploits of senior Nation Media group managers that is expected to be released on March 1st may be available sooner, according to a source close to the anonymous authors of the report believed to be staffers of the giant media group.

Exclusive kumekucha interview with John Troon, the man who investigated the Ouko murder reveals that there is enough evidence to convict.

Nation Crime Reporter Goes Public Saying He Fears For His Life

Former Nation Crime Editor Stephen Muiruri says in the latest letters leaked to this blogger, that he fears for his life.

While it is a known fact that crime reporting, and especially the kind of deep, investigative kind that was Muiruri's specialty is highly risky and dangerous, what makes the former Nation crime writer's predicament even more serious, are the numerous enemies he seems to have made in the course of his work.

The former Nation crime editor is taking the threats on his life seriously and a look at the letter reveals that it has been widely circulated to key personalities in the country, including ODM-Kenya presidential hopefuls, Kalonzo Musyoka and Raila Odinga, Paul Muite, the Aga Khan (who is majority shareholder of NMG) as well as the British High Commissioner to Kenya amongst others.

Dear All,

RE: RESIGNATION FROM NATION MEDIA GROUP
Until I resigned from Nation Media Group on February 2, 2007, I was the Crime Editor and I was in charge of matters to do with security, crime, corruption and terrorism.

I resigned after it dawned on me that I did not have the backing of my employer despite the risk that I exposed myself and my family to in discharging my official duties in the sensitive docket of security. I had was left with no option but to tender my resignation when it became evidently clear on February 1, 2007, that two of NMG’s top executives were openly colluding with the Commissioner of Police, Maj Gen Mohamed Hussein Ali, to frustrate my work and to compromise the coverage of security and crime stories.

It’s for this reason that I felt I was badly exposed and I had to resign for the sake of my security and that of my family. I have decided to write to you and to make this matter public in the event that anything bad happens to me or my family.

On February 1, 2007, I went to see NMG’s CEO, Mr Linus Gitahi, to raise concerns over attempts by the Group Editorial Director, Mr Wangethi Mwangi, and the Group Managing Editor, Mr Joseph Odindo, to censor, play down or kill crime and security stories. This followed concerns that had been raised to Mr Mwangi over a story I had written about two weeks earlier on the sharp rise in extra-judicial killings. I, therefore, went to see Mr Gitahi to set the records straight and put him in the picture how and why we published the story.

After I explained myself, Mr Gitahi excused himself saying he was going to summon Mr Mwangi and Mr Odindo so that he could clear the air over the story. In addition to Mr Mwangi and Mr Odindo, four other top executives –, Mr Dennis Aluanga (Mr Gitahi’s defacto deputy), Mrs Helen Mbugua (Group Human Resources Director), Mr Sam Koskei (Security Manager) and Mr Bernard Nderitu (Managing Editor-Daily Nation) – walked into the CEO’s office and he and asked me to explain the concerns I had raised with him.

To my surprise, Mr Gitahi brushed aside the genuine issues I had raised and asked me if I owned a tours and safaris company. I told him I owned one. He then asked Mr Koskei to tell the top executives the findings of an investigation he had been doing against me. Mr Koskei mentioned the tour firm I owned and a vehicle I’m alleged to have bought from the Kenya Police through a public auction. The issue of the vehicle is explained in detail in the letter I have attached marked SM3.

I strongly believe the issues of the vehicle and the tour company were only excuses used by Mr Gitahi, Mr Mwangi and Mr Koskei to force me out of NMG.

I believe they were only fulfilling a long-time desire of Maj Gen Ali who has been waging a vicious campaign against me since early 2005 due to by boldness in the coverage of security and crime stories and for turning down his various efforts to arm-twist me play down or kill such stories.

The police commissioner started arm-twisting me by summoning me to his office. And when that failed, he started using Ms Rose Kimotho, the proprietor of Kameme FM to call my bosses to prevail upon me to tone down exposing the growing wave of crime. When that did not work, Maj Gen Ali started calling NMG bosses himself and invited them for lunches with an intention to influence their decisions. Some of my bosses tried to prevail upon me to tone down but backed off when I questioned their motives. This frustrated Maj Gen Ali and he resorted to writing threatening and scandalous letters to my bosses and other media houses raising serious and unsubstantiated claims against me. The intention was to portray me as dishonest and he did not hide his wishes in his letters – he wanted the NMG management to take serious action against me. With the backing of my immediate boss, Mr Bernard Nderitu, and my fellow editors in the newsroom, I continued to discharge my duties undeterred. But I realised I was losing the battle when both Mr Mwangi and Mr Odindo instructed Mr Nderitu not to be publishing my stories until they cleared them. It’s for this reason I visited Mr Gitahi in his office on February 1, 2007. The issues are explained in details in the letter marked SM1.

Right from the time Maj Gen Ali arrived at Vigilance House, it has been his desire to pocket and muzzle the media by ensuring that damaging crime and security stories were given a blackout or were played down. By doing so, it would then look like crime went drastically during his tenure. But my firm believe has been that the media being the watchdog of the society can’t look the other way when crime is skyrocketing and innocent people are being killed by criminals everyday at the expense of pleasing the desires of the Commissioner of Police. Maj Gen Ali succeeded in silencing the other media houses and their crime reporters. But his only remaining thorn in the flesh was me for I refused to compromise my professional ethics.

Soon after he was appointed the commissioner of police, Maj Gen Ali and I struck a good working relationship. But I soon realised he was taking advantage of our closeness and he wanted to influence the way I covered crime and security stories. We parted ways when I told him in his office that I could not ruin my career and my reputation to satisfy his personal ambitions and desires. This triggered hatred I have never witnessed in the five predecessors of Maj Gen Ali, whom I was close to and none of them attempted to blackmail me to tone down my reporting. What is so special with Maj Gen Ali that the media should treat him with kind gloves that were unavailable when the other commissioners were in office? For instance, when the wife of former Chief of General Staff, Gen Joseph Kibwana, was carjacked on Mombasa Road , Maj Gen Ali called me and told me there was a rumour in town that such an incident had happened and asked me to ignore it. Had I listened to him, NMG would have looked like fools for all the other newspapers had splashed the story the following day. I informed Mr Mwangi and Mr Odindo about this incidents and the others I’m going to mention below. Maj Gen Ali had formed a habit of summoning me to his office when he was faced with a major crisis and he always wanted me to help him by misleading the public or playing down the crime situation. My refusal to be pocketed by him is what has cost me my job at NMG.

I’ll give a few incidents Maj Gen Ali wanted me to play down:
The spate of killings in Ngong and Ongata Rongai in 2004 and 2005 which were threatening to trigger a mass exodus by hard-working Kenyans who invested their hard-earned savings to put up their own homes.

Police shooting dead three children and a milk vendor in Kisumu during the 2005 referendum campaigns. The commissioner called a press conference and claimed police had killed rioters who wanted to overrun Kondele police station. And he said he had no apologies to make for the fiasco. But we exposed his lies when we reported that police had killed school children and a milk vendor who had nothing to do with riots. The commissioner wanted me to conceal the truth. Although he publicly quoted saying two police officers were arrested and nine others were being sought over the killings, not a single person has ever been charged with the killings.

Maj Gen Ali wanted us to give blackout to stories on murders, bank robberies and killing of security officers, arguing they were giving the country a bad name.

He was against the media publishing stories on terrorism and arrests made by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit. He wanted the arrests and activities of the unit to remain secret.

He made desperate and futile attempts to prevail upon me to help him cover up on the scandal that had been exposed by the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission on the recruitment of police constables. Although he called a press conference and claimed that 175 officers in charge of the annulled recruitment had been interdicted, the fact to this day remains that none of the officers was sent home. He was so furious when I exposed this. For my own security reasons, I deliberately refused to reveal the beneficiaries of the graft-riddled recruitment and this issue has always troubled Maj Gen Ali for he knows I know some of the top beneficiaries. Mr Mwangi and Mr Nderitu are aware about this matter and the attempts by Maj Gen Ali to have me kill stories on the scandal.
I kept briefing them.

I discharged my duties under very difficult circumstances. NMG top management is aware of what I was going through with Maj Gen Ali since I briefed them on every new development. But to my surprise, Mr Mwangi and Mr Gitahi opted to sacrifice me for their personal reasons other than the two issues of the vehicle and the tour firm.

My troubles with Mr Mwangi dates back to January 2005 when the Anglo Leasing scandal started rocking the Kibaki Administration. I wrote a story that former Internal Security Permanent Secretary, Mr Dave Mwangi, was one of the top figures in the Kibaki Administration lined up for questioning by KACC. I had been given this information by KACC’s depurty director in charge of investigations and assets recovery, Dr John Mutonyi. By the time I left for home, the story had been edited and placed on the layout as the headline for the next days newspaper. I got a rude shock the next day when I found the story had been killed and it was not anywhere in the newspaper. When I demanded from Mr Nderitu why the story had been killed, first told me it had been removed to pave way for another stronger story. He asked me to do a follow up but I told him I would only do it if he assured me it was going to be used. He gave me his assurance.

The follow up story did not live to see the light of the day. When I demanded the truth from Mr Nderitu, he told me he was ordered to kill the stories by Mr Wangethi Mwangi because Mr Dave Mwangi had been mentioned. I became so furious and I wrote a memo to Mr Odindo and Mr Nderitu demanding to know why some powerful forces were killing stories to please outsiders. In the same memo, I explained the actions of the powerful individuals made a mockery of NMG’s reputation and integrity and I explained how I and other reporters writing Anglo Leasing stories had been approached by our colleagues to drop the names of some of the key suspects in exchange of hefty bribes. They were offering more than Sh500,000 to drop every single name. Such hefty bribes are very tempting to the poorly paid journalists. But on my part, I declined the cash and I also mentioned all the suspects in every story I did on the Anglo Leasing scandal. By killing the stories, I told Mr Odindo and Mr Nderitu that we were giving an impression to the Anglo Leasing suspects that the cash they had given the brokers in our newsroom had been delivered.

I was later summoned by a furious Mr Mwangi to his office when Mr Nderitu took his memo to him. Mr Odindo was also summoned. Mr Mwangi tried to intimidate me to reveal who the powerful figures I had talked about were. I told him my memo was self explanatory and it did not require further explanation. He then demanded to know who the newsroom brokers were. I told him I could not reveal the small fish until he first dealt with the powerful forces that were responsible for killing stories. Mr Mwangi has never forgiven me for the sting I gave him that day and he has always harboured deep personal grudges against me. I believe that is why he seized the opportunity for revenge when Maj Gen Ali started complaining about my stories and their motives. All the stories I wrote, just like for other writers, were first discussed by a meeting of section editors during a daily 9.30am meeting in the Editorial meeting room. Mr Nderitu chairs the meeting. All the stories I wrote and we published had the full mandate of the meeting and there minutes to prove that. The stories were a collective responsibility of all the editors who attend but Mr Mwangi deliberately ignored the collective responsibility and took issue with my stories.

Just like Maj Gen Ali is paranoid when the real crime situation in the country is exposed by the media, Mr Mwangi is so paranoid when the name Dave Mwangi is involved. Most journalists take flight when they have to do a story involving Mr Dave Mwangi fearing the wrath of the Editorial Director. The relationship between the look-alikes Mr Mwangi and Dave Mwangi is a mystery. Although they both studied and stayed in the same room at the University of Nairobi , no one knows if they are related by blood or they are just friends.

Mr Gitahi jumped into a bandwagon of Maj Gen Ali and Mr Mwangi without caring to know the historical perspective. This is a case of pure malice and personal vendetta and it has nothing to do with the alleged vehicle and the tour firm.

My journalism work speaks volumes for itself and no amount of mudslinging will ever discredit it or ruin my reputation. I have been one of NMG’s top performers. In the annual appraisals by my seniors, I always got the highest grade. I got Grade Two on a scale of Six. Its for this reason that I was the only journalist from NMG who was nominated by Mr Odindo for a training course on investigative journalism sponsored by the US Government in the Southern Illinois University Carbondale in March/April last year. I was also nominated by Mr Odindo for the online management course on newsroom management sponsored by the Commonwealth Press Union. Am doing the last Unit Eight to complete the course.

Kenyans have a right to question the motives of Mr Gitahi and Maj Gen Ali. I have been sacrificed for my hardline stance of demanding that NMG’s top executives must guard the independence of the editorial from manipulation by self-seekers like the Commissioner of Police. The role of NMG being the watchdog of the society has severely been compromised.

Already, NMG is facing the worst crisis ever after anonymous letters from the Editorial staff accuse top editors of unfairly promoting some female staff in exchange of sexual favour or victimizing others after they refused to compromise their integrity. Instead of dealing with these critical issues that have created major conflicts in the Editorial, Mr Gitahi has embarked on a campaign of weeding out staff members he regards to be critical and uncompromising. Does he want to say he prefers to work with the tainted?

Although the NMG management is well aware of the networks of corruption in the Editorial, no serious steps have ever been taken to rid the company of corrupt reporters and editors. This is why I have seriously questioned Mr Gitahi’s motives right from the time he arrived at Nation Centre on November 1, 2006.

The actions of Mr Mwangi and Mr Gitahi have seriously undermined the position NMG had taken for many years as the most independent and reliable media house in East and Central African region. It’s evident that a powerful outsider can now call NMG managers demanding the instant sacking of a journalist knowing their wish would be granted. I have never been offered any protection by the NMG management in the face of unwarranted provocation by Maj Gen Ali. Instead, they sided with him and forced me to resign under duress.

The madness in Nation Media Group must be brought under control by all people who mean well for this great company and the journalism profession. The time to save the media giant is now and not tomorrow.

I fear that now that out of NMG, I and my family have been left badly exposed. I look upon God and friends of the journalism profession to protect me and my family for anything bad that anyone with an evil mind might be plotting against me and my family. That is why I have decided to go public on my predicament.
