I have just received an email from Marianne Briner (the victim of the date rape incident). I hereby reproduce it here;
After my letters to the CNN-Executives, Jeff Koinange has called me (he is at the moment in Ghana). We spoke for more than 1 hour on the phone. He apologized for the incident in London telling me that it was mainly based on the pressure he had been under after the problems arising from the Nigerian Report the week before.
I have accepted his apologies and we have agreed that we will continue having contacts on a strictly professional basis. He has offered to make a special Interview and a special Report in Inside-Africa during the next months connected to the forthcoming General Elections in Kenya. I have agreed to this.
I therefore want to confirm that I will not pursue the matter which happened in London. I will also confirm this in an official letter which I will send to the Executives of CNN.
Jeff Koinange is an excellent Journalist and I think Africa (and the world) needs somebody like him. He has a lot to offer - and I am the last to judge him on that regrettable incident in London, especially now when his wife is expecting their first child.

Ms Briner also took the opportunity to make a correction in my earlier report to the effect that Jeff's wife was not in London with him at the time of the regrettable incident. She had actually gone to pick up her husband in Joburg at the airport when the armed robbery incident happened.
Kumekucha says: After the trauma Ms Brinner suffered in London, she is very brave and a unique human being to have taken the decision that she has. Hopefully her going public with this in the first place will not have been in vain and those of us men who may want to take advantage of women with abandon, will in future think twice.
Accordingly this matter will not be pursued any further in this blog.
I think thats abit of blackmail by Marianne and it appears she could have stopped the so called date rape from happening but decided to let it happen as she would latter use it against JK. Am not in support of JK and dont know him plus what transpired btwn the two in London.
ReplyDeleteBut, being as serious crime as it is here in London where i am based, would it not have been better for Marianne to report it immediately to the police rather than wait and expose it later. Some will argue that nobody would have believed her however, police in london do treat these allegations seriously plus the obvious evidence i.e. hotel room, drugs, semen, phone calls etc. So she had enough evidence against JK if the whole thing happened as is written down.
Anyway she has gotten her way but sadly trivilised the horendous crime that will go unpunished.

ReplyDeleteI live in the U.S.A and I have never heard of Marianne Briner. I have watched a couple of stories by Jeff. I will never support or even make excuses for a man accused of rape however it would make perfect sense based on Marianne's age, she would have called the cops at her earliest convenience. I believe she want her book to sell so she has to use whatever means to advertise it. We cannot conclusively say whether or not she was raped but we can say something is wrong with her story. Of course she is taking advantage of victim sympathy but that will not last very long. I would be the first one to cast a stone if Jeff had been arrested on the day the 'rape' occurred and convicted. Since she waited and continued to communicate with him that shows either she condoned it or it actually never happened and the sex was consensual! Since I am not a psychiatrist I cannot say what’s happening to Marriane’s head. I think she has come decided to break the story because she realized Jeff wasn’t going to deliver what he promised her. I call it blackmail. If they had sex most likely he used his position to promise heaven and earth and she was stupid enough to believe him and after he got what he wanted he decided to move on. Pissed Marriane decided to call Jeff a rapist and hence destroy his career. CNN you know better firing a person based on allegations and not facts. Jeff next time you meet a woman and want to have sex please do not promise anything although my advise to you would be to just stick to your loving wife. She is heart-broken right now and she will never be the same. As for you Marianne you know the truth but I am not sure what you have said is the whole truth. Please proof me wrong.

ReplyDeleteIn my life, I have seen many people writing and making claims about others just to defame them. Even in cases where young men and ladies claim sexual abuse, they are mostly being used by others, either directly or indirectly to get even with innocent people. This lady's story would really hace been sad, if only it could convince anyone with their head on their shoulders. Seems like this lady, in all her possibilities to make an honest living, has just decided to take the shortest route, one which will attract sympathy and fame. With this story, I just can't help but feel sorry for her, not because of what she claims to have happened, but because of the way she claims it. Jeff Koinange has never seemed to me as someone who would send info via the net just to end up sleeping with someone they did not know. For crying out loud, this guy has traveled far and wide, seen alot of beautiful women, and I am sure, came very close to dating some of them, if he already did not. Why would he travel all the way, so as to rape this woman? What do you take us for? Shit-for-brains?

What can be done is all the people in the world, of good will, to support Jeff Koinange and help him get back on his two feet again, without looking at him through judging lenses. He should not be sidelined by anyone, because only God can judge him, just like anyone of us. If he has wronged anybody, let him apologise to his family, marianne's, and the rest of the world.
As for you Marrianne, I really pray that you are real in all you say, and that if in any case you are, should come out in public and apologise not only to Jeff, but to his family, CNN, your daughter and the rest of the world, because that's just what Jeff is, a son of the world, not only of Kenya, but of the world.

It seems since she starting communicating with Jeff, she had something up her sleeve and naively he was lead on to keep going and even tell her very personal things like how he got the Niger Delta story only for her to turn around and use such information to destroy his shining career. The last time I heard about Briner she had come to Kenya to give evidence and she also engage on side issues like exposing those she allegedly had slept with (one was a very high profile personality) and I don't want to miuse his name because I wonder whether it was true. Even it was, what does she find so interesting in exposing people and destroying them. She was valued for her role in the Ouko inquiry but now she is sidestepping everything and she will invite hate and rath instead. Destroying men seems to be her domain. As for Jeff; what was he thinking of hanging out with this old mzungu at the expense of his family and career. Anyway, we are all human and prone to err; but he has learnt a dear lesson. Marianne I hope you read this blog because you are disgusting. As for those who are jumping the gun and accusing Jeff of date rape, just be quiet because you don't know and neither do I about what transpired between the two. I feel sorry for Jeff. As an African, he had a dream job. But what he needs to do now is to fight back by talking to someone about what happened. He must tell his side of the story by being brutally honest.
Regardless of the circumstances of what happened or did not happen, the fact is, if Jeff slept with this woman, white or not, he cheated on his wife. Why are most Kenyans confortable with this phenemenon of men sleeping around even though they are married?
