When Kenyan Women Dish Out Sexual Favors In The Workplace: Just How Widespread Is The Vice In Corporate Kenya?

It all happened quite a while back, but I can still remember all the details as if it were unfolding again right now before my very eyes. She was a neighbor and jobless until that fateful evening when she came home with another man other than her boyfriend who was the owner of the house she was staying in. The man she came home with that fateful day was old enough to be her father. He was a short balding man who owned a big car that looked very similar to a Pajero.

They went into the house and one did not need to overhear the noise that was soon coming from the bed that had not been tightened well enough to know what was going on. They even emerged with my neighbor's hair still messy from the activity that had just taken place. She was obviously an amateur in this kind of business (the professionals in the office usually emerge with their hair neatly in place and exactly where it was when they went in). Shortly after that my neighbor landed a very good job with some kind of NGO organization, and the rest as they say is history. Today that young girl drives a SUV vehicle that is better than the one that belonged to her mzee lover that evening. By the way she ended up getting married to the boyfriend she cheated on that day to land her big job.

What my pretty young neighbor did that day so many years ago is nothing new in corporate Kenya and although many are still numb with shock over the recent sex scandal allegations at one of the most respected blue chip companies in the region—the Nation Media group—many keen observers know only too well that the truth is that it shouldn't be at all shocking. Right across the corporate world many Kenya women are enthusiastically dishing out sexual favors in return for promotions, perks, raises and all sorts of goodies that they would they have otherwise found a lot more difficult to access. Many times these women are married but still justify their actions in the fact that putting bacon on the table has become an increasingly dodgy affair in today's Kenya. To be fair I should also add that there is also a rapidly increasing number of men in corporate Kenya with a different sexual orientation (forced or inborn) also dishing out sexual favours in return for big jobs and as a matter of fact I know one very well, but that is a story for another day.

Don't even mention the big disease, which has made things even more complicated (or has it just made it that more exciting because of the dangers and risks that add to the thrill?)

At a time when the Kenyan woman is keen to consolidate her hard won gains, this kind of behaviour by some Kenyan ladies does not do the cause much good and if anything helps to solidify the terrible attitude many Kenyan men have towards women.

So how serious is this "corrupt" activity in corporate Kenya. Nobody has ever done any research but I can tell you judging from the couple of companies that I have been involved with over the years, the truth is that it is a very serious widespread epidemic that is part of the corruption rot whose pungent stench Kenyans can no longer ignore, no matter how hard we try to.

And sadly it is a vice that will be extremely difficult to combat as long as men remain the main decision-makers at most corporate entities. I was fascinated by an incident that took place at a very respected company where I did some consultancy work just four short years ago. The company was looking to fill a very sensitive position and the managing director who happened to be European opted (against the advice of his human resources department) to carry out the interviews himself. Through the open door to my office I had a very good view of the MD's reception area and sure enough the usual "interview crowd" showed up with extremely short skirts and red outfits (for those who have no idea of the power of a red dress on a man, please accept my sincere apologies and use the power of the net to find out what the hell I am talking about).

Sure enough, it was the lady with the shortest skirt who landed the job—and it was red dress. The men stood no chance and you could tell from how short a time they spent inside the CEO's office. If this happened at a very respected corporate entity run by a non-corrupt mzungu CEO with impeccable credentials, what should we expect from the rest of the corporate Kenya?

A friend who works at a hotel in Mombasa tells me the kind of tales that I would write off as pure fiction—the kind that is not believable, if I did not know him well enough. Young girls being entertained on company expense accounts and then special receipts and all sorts of favors to falsify things being requested for and being handsomely rewarded for. Incidentally in the Nation case a weekend at a Malindi hotel is supposed to have clinched a plum editorial appointment for this young unqualified lady.

So even as we look to waging war against corruption in high office and in politics, what in the world are we going to do about the even more widespread corruption involving the lifting of skirts and to a lesser extent the unzipping of trousers in return for all sorts of undeserved favors?

P.S. I am well aware of the fact that this post is going to upset plenty of my regular readers who have loved me to bits up to this moment but unfortunately may not be willing to face up too quickly to the circumstances that landed them behind that precious computer work station from whence they religiously read Kumekucha every morning. Please find it in you to forgive me.

SexScandal: Why Nation Managers Will Not Be Fired

A media analyst friend of mine disagrees with our analysis here that floated the possibility of a change of guard at Nation media group over the recent sex scandal. Their reasons seem sound enough.

He minces no words in emphasizing that big business is all about money. "If you want to get your corporate analysis right keep your eyes on the cash side of things. Not morals," he says.

"Next ask yourself what year we are in."

Traditionally newspapers, and especially the nation, usually make record profits in an election year. Circulation sales shoot through the roof and so does advertising, including political ads. The last thing that Paris wants this year is some inexperienced enthusiasts directing affairs in the editorial department of the newspaper. Not now when hands are already rubbing together in glee, in anticipation of the windfall. And esp[ecially now when there is a new inexperienced CEO at the helm.

So the danger over the alleged sexual scandal now shifts to the NMG staff who may have had anything to do with the posting of the defamatory open letter on the web, apart from losing their jobs, they could find themselves facing legal suits.

The moral issues mean nothing to NMG, head office because there was no cash embezzlement or direct cash bribery allegations, which would have been taken much more seriously by Paris.

He ends on a rather crude note that admittedly gets his point across. "As long as the job gets done, where people dip their ‘unfettered things’ is of little concern to Paris, that’s mainly a private issue."

Phew. This counter analysis seems to make lots of sense. Let’s just wait and see shall we?

When A President Tells Lies In Full View Of TV Cameras

Some people define politics as the art of telling lies successfully. I am certainly not one of those people and if that is what politics really is, I want no part in it.

But yesterday his Excellency President Kibaki told a blatant lie in full view of TV cameras and the world. His Excellency the occupant of State House Nairobi and all the other palatial presidential residences countrywide, the man whom I voted for with my whole heart that memorable day of December 2002 called several of his own cabinet ministers liars. Indeed he even called me a liar, but alas, who am I?

Cabinet ministers Musikari Kombo (who was very close to the late VP Wamalwa Kijana) could be lying and so could cabinet Minister Noah Wekesa. But the clip of former VP Kijana Wamalwa giving an eloquent speech describing the turning point for opposition unity is not a lie. According to the now dead man, it came when the opposition king pins all selfishly gunning for the presidency decided to put their personal interests aside for the good of the country and decided that they would give each other brief 5 year terms and within a short time the presidency would go round all of them. Insiders add that it was Kijana who observed that candidate Kibaki was the older man and by virtue of that fact needed to be given the first turn.

Let me add another undeniable fact. Let us for a moment assume that the President is telling the truth and that this blogger hasn't the faintest idea of what he is talking about. Let us even assume (for the sake of all those government moles who read this blog every day) that this blogger has been paid by some unknown person or people to spread fitina. Even then, president Kibaki is still morally wrong in seeking re-election.

It is sad that today President Kibaki is a very different man from that easy-going politician who went round city hotels with the late Kijana Wamalwa and Charity Ngilu promising to deliver Kenyans from the clutches and tentacles of the evil Kanu. After a brief stint in power, he does not have the interests of the country at heart gunning for a second term, which will see him leave office when he is close to 82 years old.

Mr President, apart from telling lies in public, if you really had the interests of this country at heart, you would quietly retire to your Othaya farm and give somebody else a chance to take up the mantle from where you left off. As it is your clear statement that "you will never give it up" until you have done "your 10 years" is a confirmation in my book that you need 5 more years to do things that are not in the interests of the Kenyans who elected you. Like bring back senior Kanu people like retired President Moi who we elected you to deal firmly with. And maybe you also need the additional 5 years to clean up loose ends, and especially those to do with Anglo Leasing.

Kenyan voters please take careful note.

More Lies For Gullible Kenyans From Finance Minister Kimunya

Last night during a popular talk show on KTN (Kenya Television Network) TV, finance minister Amos Kimunya openly lied to Kenyans over the Anglo Leasing scandal that has haunted president Kibaki's administration for the past three years.

Kimunya said in front of TV cameras that he did not know who returned Sh 1 billion to the treasury during the height of the scandal and the only information was that of the bank in Germany where the money was wired from.

This answer was not only an insult to the intelligence of the person who asked the question but also to the thousands of viewers who were watching the show.

For starters how was it not possible to know the identity of the person or organization you have given a multi million shilling security contract in the first place? Remember how sensitive security contracts are? They are so sensitive that open tendering is usually avoided and that is why they are so popular with those intent on dipping their hands into the cookie jar. And again, can a government fail to be interested in an organization or individual who has returned a billion shillings to the treasury?

It is clear that the government has failed on its war against corruption but what is more annoying is the blatant lies that senior government officials are peddling as they go about defending an increasingly unpopular regime.

These lying tactics were popular in the 1970's when the state radio and TV, Voice of Kenya those days, would release a bulletin claiming that the then president was on a busy working holiday at the coast without thinking twice about the contradiction of their statement. Is it possible to be on holiday and to be busy at the same time? We now know the terrible truth. The heat favored the aging president's life and as he drifted in and out of his comas, so he went to the coast to pass out even as his kitchen cabinet robbed the country blind and as AG Charles Njonjo ruled Kenya.

It seems the Kibaki administration is stuck in some kind of time warp of the 70's where Kenyans were generally considered gullible by the ruling class who fed them with ridiculous propaganda, which was never taken with 'a pinch of salt'

The common excuse that the government of today is using in its attempt to cover up corruption deals and make Kenyans forget about is the phrase that 'investigations are still ongoing'. I can assure you that at this rate investigations will never end een by the end of this century.

A former planning minister in Kibaki's administration, Prof Anyang' Nyong'o was a delight to watch on the TV talk show last night as he took Kimunya to task over corruption and wondered aloud whether these so called investigations will ever be completed.

The subdued minister also failed to answer the disturbing question on the minds of many Kenyans as to why his colleagues implicated in the Anglo Leasing scandal have been reinstated in the cabinet yet it is claimed investigations are ongoing.

At some point, Kimunya got so worked up and with no defense, he kept on repeating himself without knowing it, after his face broke into a sweat as he came to pains in his fruitless attempt to defend the government over corruption. He sounded ridiculous and poor Beatrice Marshall, the show's host had a difficult time stopping him from dominating the proceedings with his gibberish and repeated lies.

President Kibaki said yesterday while launching the youth enterprise fund that he has faith in Kenyans as he goes about his re-election bid. What he failed to ask himself is, do Kenyans have faith in him?

But even stranger was the SMS vote taken about whether the government is winning or losing the fight against corruption. Miraculously and mysteriously a whole 43% of the respondents felt that the government was winning.

My fear is that these are the same banana-voting-Hutus-of-Kenya rearing their ugly heads and putting tribal sentiments (ni mtu wetu) ahead of clear logical thinking.

Very sad, this and definitely not good news for the country. My 7-year old knows without promoting that this government is full of liars. How a grown person misses it smacks of only one thing—blatant tribal sentiments.

Youth Development Fund Fraud

The much-talked-about Youth Development fund was launched in Nairobi yesterday.

The president had some interesting remarks in launching it at the KICC that confirmed the obvious—that this is nothing more than a campaign tool to bribe his way back to power in the forthcoming elections. He said that the fund will be made larger and funds will be allocated in the next budget towards this. The president said that he did not want o reveal "how much bigger" the fund will be made, but he promised that it will be "a much bigger" (his exact words in quotes).

There are just two points I would like to draw to the attention of Kenyans. The first is in the form of a question; why is this happening in 2007 instead of 2003 as part of the campaign that was never implemented to create the 500,000 new jobs annually? The answer to that question is really simple. It is because the Youth Development Fund is not designed to succeed. That is not its' chief objective. It is designed to distribute cash to impressionable young voters in an election year. The full results of it's failure will only be fully realized after 2007 and by that time President Kibaki and First Lady Lucy will be safely back in State House for another 5 years.

Secondly the correct approach for anybody who wants to promote an entrepreneurial spirit in the country is to start with intensive training first. The initial government funding should have gone towards this. The truth is that with the right training, funding is never the key factor in the success of a business. It is the business idea and skills that come first. Over and over again in history it has been proven that a good idea will literally finance itself or easily find eager financiers. Not to mention the fact that we have quite a number of NGOs whose big problem is finding enough viable enterprises to fund.

By starting off with the funding component, what will happen is that the whole project will fail and anybody who comes in later wanting to promote enterprise amongst the youth will be told that the idea has already been tried out and it failed. This is really sad because my firm belief is that this is exactly where we need to put emphasis in order to reverse the dangerous direction the country is hurtling towards which is rapidly increasing the gap between the rich and the poor.

This emphasis on cash is what has brought about talk of Kshs 50,000 being too small an amount to launch a business. I can give you a list of 101 businesses that can comfortably be launched with Kshs 50,000 or less. It seems that in the minds of many would-be recipients, all they want is to receive the money, divide it amongst themselves and then swagger off into the sunset.

But then we understand why the deliberate emphasis is on cash don't we now?

Why Mwalimu Mati Was Hounded Out Of TI

It has now emerged that the unceremonious exit of Mwalimu Mati from Transparency International was a case of corruption fighting the eloquent and steadfast chief executive officer who zealously guarded the institutions' integrity and reputation.

A recent report released by the anti-corruption lobby group clears Mati from all wrong doing while it implicates some of his accusers who have now been shown the door as it cleans house to restore the probity of its Kenyan chapter.

After watching Mati speak on television during a talk show last night on corruption, one does not need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that Mati is not only highly intelligent but he is thorough and swiftly gets to the crux of the matter—whatever it is. These are qualities, which the current administration abhors. Incidentally John Githongo fits the same bill and that's why he is exile today even as the government says that he is no investigator and his tapes are not audible, when we have all heard them very clearly on the net.

It was Mati who came to the rescue of Kenyans when the finance minister, Mr Kimunya, attempted to lie to Kenyans about promissory notes being cancelled. The government as payment issued the notes for some of the multi-billion Anglo Leasing projects.

During the highly charged talk show, it was only Mati among the other three visitors who was armed with written facts and figures about the scandal and from his point of argument it was evident that he had thoroughly researched on the topic beforehand.

When he was kicked out of transparency international, he came out fighting and even accused some of the directors of engaging in corruption and nepotism by hiring unqualified relatives to the organization but many thought it was just a ploy he was using of painting others black so as to appear white. Mercifully the truth is now out.

True to his word, when TI launched independent investigations, Mwalimu was cleared from any wrongdoing while his accusers were sent packing in a purge that affected most of the local directors of the anti corruption lobby group.

Having secured another job as chief executive officer of Mars International, Mwalimu Mati is still an important face (that will grow in stature) in the local anti-corruption war which is far from over, especially if the dark day that president Kibaki manages to be re-elected comes to pass.

Sex Scandal At Nation Media Group: Panic And The Aftermath On Kimathi Street

From humble beginnings at it's first premises along Tom Mboya street almost opposite the Fire station headquarters in Nairobi, the small newspaper launched by the Aga Khan on the eve of independence in Kenya in 1960 has grown to be a very powerful media house. Actually the most powerful in East and Central Africa.

Today the newspaper that once occupied some tiny crowded offices in a part of town that was too close to River Road and the riff raff of Nairobi has moved to some very spacious offices along Kimathi street in an imposing ultra modern facility called the Nation Centre. You will need to take one of the super-fast lifts from the white-tiled polished floor on the ground floor to arrive on the second floor at the heart of the most popular and yet also most prestigious newspaper in this part of the world. This is where the newsroom and main editorial offices are. The place where something very strange seems to be going on which has attracted great public interest since somebody posted what appears to be an open letter to the company CEO Linus Gitahi at some almost obscure site about two days ago.

Every serious journalist has dreamt of working for the Nation at one time or another and that was why many were shocked when the newspaper that is credited as having been the first to publish details of the Anglo leasing mega scandal that has rocked the Kibaki administration appeared to have a scandal of its very own in the works.

One reader at a popular discussion forum on Kenyan issues Mashada.com where attention to the posted letter was first attracted from, said: "And I thought our politicians could not be outdone. Muafrica Ovio kabisa, kabisa (the African is very useless).

This site also attracted higher-than-usual-traffic with numerous new visitors flocking here from Switzerland of all places. That development puzzled this writer who expected the traffic surge attracted by the Nation group sex scandal analysis we did (in this, the most popular blog on Kenyan issues) to come from our traditional sources in Kenya, The United States and Great Britain in that order. And indeed that is what happened but there was that 500-per-cent-plus-increase of traffic from Switzerland that we are yet to explain. The Aga Khan high command is in Paris, France.

And even as both panic (within management) and utter delight (within the journalists who have been facing a serious purge that has seen many of them lose their lucrative jobs) has spread across the Nation center at this latest unprecedented development, the management and especially the respected senior managers mentioned in the sex scandal have remained mum. The open letter demanded that the two gentlemen resign or be "smoked out." The two are editorial director (who sits on the board) Wangethi Mwangi and group Managing Editor (perhaps the most experienced and qualified editorial journalist in this part of the world, Joseph Odindo.)

Experienced media analysts insist that if this scandal leads to resignations or dismissals, Wangethi Mwangi will hardly be missed and can easily be replaced by any of the very experienced senior editors at Nation media group like Philip Ochieng or even popular columnist Mutuma Mathiu. Odindo however is a different cup of tea. Daily newspapers as a whole are at the moment struggling to find a new identity and footing in the marketplace after the dramatic overnight change in the way the public receives its' news—mainly brought about by new media. This new media includes the popular evening TV news bulletins, web sites such as this one, the increasingly popular FM stations, as well as the wildly popular cell phone SMS service. All spew more instantaneous news than newspapers and this has made many ordinary folks even better informed on certain issues than reporters at any daily newspaper attempting to write about the same issues.

Odindo, the analysts say, is probably the best placed person to oversee the successful shift of the Nation newspaper (that has already began) to become more of an accurate daily analysis tool than the traditional news reporting medium Kenyans have known for many generations. This is serious business because there are those, even within the industry, who have predicted the ultimate demise of the newspaper as we know it today in the not too distant future. Already Odindo has spear-headed a design change at the newspaper that seems to have been very well received.

It is also worth noting that Kenyan hero John Githongo picked up a lot of anti-corruption inspiration from the likes of Odindo, the founding editor of the EastAfrican who was his boss for many years and is still a close personal friend. Githongo ran a weekly column in that regional newspaper from the time it was launched until his appointment into the Kibaki administration as ethics PS.

Alas, a scandal is a scandal and it seems that none of these deserving key factors will save the veteran editor now as the affected parties and the public at large bay for his blood. And being sex-related, this particular scandal is truly damaging, especially to the reputation of the newspaper. Some of the allegations made in the letter are very grave and coming as they do after months of rumours, are in fact extremely devastating. There is no doubt that already Paris and the Aga Khan's high command must have gotten wind of the goings on in Nairobi. It is highly unlikely that they will just sit there and do nothing.

In the past a swift change of guard has been quickly and unexpectedly announced. The last one was implemented in the 90s after allegations of corrupt practices and bribe-taking by the then senior editors like the late George Mbuguss reached Paris. One of the persons who benefited greatly from that change of guard was Wangethi Mwangi. Has his time now also come?

Sexual misbehavior is even more serious in some people's books, especially when it is linked to corrupt practices like undeserved promotions. Although we all know that office carpets all over corporate Kenya and beyond would have some delicious stories to tell if they could talk. However Nation media group is NOT just any corporate entity. It is in fact the leading watch-dog of society and the truth is that the people we rely on to blow the whistle on all the rot that is eating away at our Kenyan society must be beyond suspicion, let alone reproach.

Kenyan Politics And The Presidential Campaign Kitty: Why Close Public Scrutiny Is Required This Time

One of the questions the Kenyan electorate must ask in the forthcoming election is how politicians and especially the leading presidential candidates raise cash for their campaigns. It has become very clear that campaigning for the presidency is an extremely costly affair.

Keen observers of the Kenyan political scene will have noted the sudden about-turn within ODM-Kenya (on the day our analysis of the issue appeared here) where leading presidential hopefuls are now clearly showing signs of agreeing on the party's presidential candidate via consensus rather than the intensive delegates system they have been so aggressively pushing for. The reason that they have given is that they fear infiltration by government agents. The truth is that the main reason has to do with finances and leading campaigners like Raila Odinga and the man who has pushed hardest for the impossible unviable system (Kalonzo Musyoka) have already started feeling the financial strain. This happening in late January when the elections are expected in December gives you an idea of how serious the problem is.

Kenyan voters now need to be very wary of these people who usually come from nowhere to announce that they are ready to finance a presidential campaign. Usually these people are shadowy unscrupulous businessmen who see the exercise as an investment that they will heavily cash in on when their candidate is safely in State House. Take the likes of Ephrahim Maina of the notorious Kirinyaga Construction company and one of the cowboy contractors Narc vowed will not be paid when they come to power. People like Raila Odinga were at the forefront of that wildly popular campaign in 2002.

But alas, the man was one of the businessmen and leading personalities from Nyeri who financed President Kibaki's campaign. So early in the Narc administration Raila turns up in Nyeri for a function and is surprised (he shouldn't have been) to find Ephrahim Maina there. Maina left only after Raila strongly voiced his objections to his presence. But that did not stop the contractor getting paid in full and even as you read this, a contract he was awarded by the Kibaki administration to complete repairs on the Nyeri-Sagana Road is yet to be done. And reports indicate that he has already been paid in full for the work.

It is highly likely that once again this generous man's name will appear amongst the people financing President Kibaki's re-election bid.

There is no such thing as free lunch and anybody volunteering to sponsor a presidential bid has an agenda, which needs to be scrutinized to ensure that it is above board.

Other candidates in Kenyan politics like Uhuru Kenyatta will rely heavily on family funds accumulated by the father (late founding president of Kenya Mzee Jomo Kenyatta), mainly from grabbed public land. This is one family that owns land the size of some provinces in Kenya. This corrupt source of campaign funds for the presidency must also be rejected by the electorate.

So how should a genuine presidential candidate raise campaign funds in the Kenyan political arena? They will need to get a lot more creative (after all we need a very creative person in State House this time to have a fighting chance of solving our long list of pressing problems) and they will need to rely mainly on the public that supports their candidature and their proposed policies. They will also need to cut down on their excessive budgets and instead get back to the basics of publicizing their agenda and policy proposals through the media in simple language that the electorate can understand and analyze.

If we are truly after a new government that will have zero tolerance for corruption then that long march must start with the issue of where our candidates are getting their campaign funds. There should be no compromise on this issue, if we truly want a clean up of Kenyan politics.

How Did Arrogant "Rattle Snake" Michuki Make His Millions?

John Njoroge Michuki could be among the richest cabinet ministers in President Kibaki's cabinet but few know how the former colonial District officer amassed a fortune that made him fabulously wealthy by the early 70's.

After his stint with the colonialists, Michuki was absorbed by Kenya's first independence government due to his experience in public service and was among the few Kenyans who were well educated.

He was later appointed executive chairman of Kenya commercial bank and managed to give himself unsecured loans which he used wisely to quickly build up his financial empire with vast investments in agriculture, real estate and in recent times, transport.

Here is a man who has built a reputation over the years for never failing to use his public service office to make money. Michuki is said to have acquired Kipande house in the city center while he was still the top man at KCB and ended up doubling as his employer's landlord as the bank has maintained a branch on those premises for many years.

Michuki is also said to have amassed plenty of buildings in Nairobi while he worked at the bank along with prime land which he later sold off in the 90's and made big profits in the transactions at a time when members of the Kikuyu community were being 'sidelined' by the then president Moi.

When Kibaki came to power, he appointed Michuki to the transport ministry where he served well by making it mandatory for public service vehicles to install safety belts and speed governors but also made money on the side by licensing Citi hopper buses to operate within the city center at a time when Kenya bus services had collapsed.

It was later established that his son was among the directors of Citi hopper fuelling speculation that the minister could probably be the owner of the fast growing transport company that is now dominating the streets of Nairobi and its suburbs.

Michuki is now minister of internal security and provincial administration where they are multi million shilling security contracts at his disposal and better still, most of these contracts are sealed in secrecy due to their sensitive nature. Will Michuki capitalize on this to line his pockets once? Your guess is as good as mine.

Why Bullying In Secondary Schools Is Not About To End

As thousands of students prepare to join form one next week after successfully completing primary school education last year, top on their mind as they enter their new learning environment is the question of bullying and how it will affect them in the next few months.

Bullying is as old as education itself and the menace has been with us from time immemorial but it is encouraging to note that it has decreased over the years mainly due to government efforts to deal with it firmly.

In its worst form, bullying has resulted in serious physical injuries and at times in death to 'poor' form one students who's only crime was being a 'mono' or 'rubble' as they are called by their fellow students in higher classes.

The bullying culture has been worse in national schools over the years and this was as a result of the colonialists, who's children beat up African students who joined these institutions to show them that they were not equal and it was a big mistake for the Africans to join the national schools then dominated by Europeans.

A good case in point is Lenana school, formerly called The Duke of York School. When I joined the institution in 1983, bullying was part of life and a day hardly past without serious physical beatings from other students let alone prefects who had the powers to beat you up and then send you to the head teacher for further punishment.

The situation got so bad that at one time, a form five student assaulted me to the extent that I had to be admitted to hospital while the culprit continued with his studies unabated as if nothing had happened. At one point I was electrocuted using an electrical cable meant for an electrical kettle.

On seeing the school authorities were doing nothing much over the issue, my parents decided to press charges in court where the accused was found guilty but was let off with a light probation sentence by the corruption infested legal system of the day.

The following year, things changed dramatically as a new headmaster, one Mr Maneno was posted to the school and physical beatings almost ended overnight with those caught assaulting form one's being dealt with harshly. Many students were actually expelled.

To date, students at the school tell me that bullying still exists but in very mild form and physical beatings are a thing of the past. What is common is the ridiculing of the boys who are sometimes told to imitate some prominent female characters or instructed to polish the shoes of their 'superiors'.

For many, bullying is considered as a way of initiating form one's to the new life of secondary school and also transforming them from boys to men and this is one of the reasons why the menace will not go away in a long time.

Kenya's Largest Teacher's Sacco Rocked By Sex And Looting On A Massive Scale

The Machakos teachers SACCO (savings and credit co-operative) is probably the largest institution of its kind in Kenya with a share capital of Sh 1.3 billion and over 10,000 members. This is hardly surprising when you realize that Machakos and Makueni districts (previously one district called Machakos) has the highest number of primary schools in the country. This SACCO was once considered a success story until a couple of years ago when everything started to fall apart.

Apparently, everything was going on well until the top officials got greedy and decided to indiscriminately 'borrow' large amounts of money from the society which they have not only refused to repay but are now milking the organization dry at the expense of teachers.

At the center of the scandal is the general manager Solomon Ngomo and his assistant Peter Kyelenzi who have amassed so much wealth over a very short period of time but have managed to fool the teachers by pretending to be deeply religious men and concealing their vast assets.

The duo who are form four drop-outs with Kyelenzi barely able to speak fluent English also stand accused of trading sex for jobs at the sacco where young pretty girls are hired every six months as casuals and can only have their contracts renewed if they hop into bed with the two top officials.

For those seeking permanent employment, the scenario is not any better, the interview includes liaisons with the boss at his second floor office at Mwalimu center which is complete with bathroom facilities and a bed.

Little wonder that majority of the employees at the sacco are pretty women including people's wives as the two top officials play the dangerous game of having affairs with married women.

A teacher who spoke to this writer on condition of anonymity said it now takes six months to have an application for an emergency loan processed with no guarantees that one will get the money.

Worse still, those applying for normal development loans have to wait for more than six months to have their forms processed and again there are no guarantees that you will access the money.

This has led to an exodus from the sacco with those members coming from Yatta and Masinga opting to join the Thika teachers sacco which is not only nearer to their work stations but offers efficient services and is much better run.

Numerous calls to have the sacco investigated have come to naught as the two officials use money to stifle any form of investigations including nosy journalists who are paid off when they start asking questions concerning the way the sacco is run.

The teachers are now moving out of the sacco after discovering that Ngomo has recently completed a Sh 30 million petrol station along Mombasa road and bought a new sports utility vehicle worth millions of shillings which he gave to his daughter as a gift after she graduated from Daystar university.

A popular Swahili saying says the days of a thief are forty and both Ngomo and Kyelenzi's 40 days are not up yet but the duo could be in for a shock and the beginning of the end for their errant ways could come this year when the government reigns in on errant sacco's. It is expected that the first step to doing this will be the passing of legislation to exercise more control on the way these societies are run.

Sex Scandals And A Purge Hit Nation Media Group Staff

All is not well at the largest and most successful media house in East and Central Africa. And what is even more worrying is that the current crisis should come in an election year and affect a department at the impressive media house which Kenyans are heavily relying on and looking up to "to deliver the goods."

The crux of the problem is tension between the senior management that heads the editorial department and members of the editorial department. This tension seems to have been triggered off by a "clean up" and downsizing effort launched by the new CEO Linus Gitahi. Most in the editorial department strongly feel that the "trimming exercise" is being done unfairly and that the measuring rod is something else other than performance. Nothing new about that except that the staff has anonymously written an open letter to CEO Linus Gitahi (which has been posted on the net-see details at the end of this article) threatening to expose what they see as "the rot within the Nation Media group." In fact what their intentions are, is to expose, embarrass and adversely affect the media house by exposing what they claim is a sex scandal involving the most senior executives in the editorial department, if their demands are not met. This letter has been widely circulated amongst the alternative press in Nairobi.

Their demand is that the current clean up targeting unproductive and incompetent staff be carried out in a transparent and fair manner. They have also demanded that the two senior executives whom they blame for the problems should resign by the end of February or "they will be smoked out." The cheeky editorial staff have even threatened to write to the largest single NMG shareholder and founder of the Nation group, the Aga Khan himself and inform him of the alleged sexual escapades of the two senior editors that has seen them reward incompetent female staff with promotions. They have also said they will present the spouses of the culprits with evidence of the same as well as publicizing everything to the public. The letter adds that "other strategies remain our secret."

The letter names the two senior executives as Editorial director Wangethi Mwangi and group managing editor, Joseph Odindo. Also named is group Human Resources director Mrs Hellen Mbugua.

Sex scandals are really nothing new at the media house and indeed many other large companies in Kenya today. Reports are rampant of the defilement of people's wives and attractive women exchanging sexual favors for promotion. Not to mention married men also seducing their powerful women bosses so as to get ahead. At other times members of staff have been known to jump into bed with each other, even on their employer's time. At one time a major Aids scare hit the Nation media group when a senior member of the editorial department passed on as a result of complications caused by HIV-Aids. There was real fear because the staffer had several lovers who had in turn also had encounters with others in an almost endless chain of links that many felt would have endangered the lives of a large section of the staff. This happened in the late 1990s.

Then there was a sexual harassment suit filed against editorial director Wangethi Mwangi by a female member of staff. This writer has not been able to establish exactly what became of it.

However the latest crisis seems to be the "mother of all sex scandals" at the media house, mainly because there is the real possibility of exposure to the public who will be shocked to learn that the respected media house may after all be better described as a whore house, at least in some sections and departments.

Urgent personal message to you from Kumekucha.

This letter must have been posted on the web by a member of staff at Nation Media house. Read the full unedited version for yourself.

The People Who Financed President Kibaki's Campaign In 2002 And How They Opened The Floodgates Of Corrupt Deals

President Kibaki came into power with a very convincing clarion call that he repeated at every opportunity and which did not omitt the words; zero tolerance to corruption. But naïve Kenyans failed to ask the right questions which had they asked, would have told them that this was one president who was NOT going to avoid corruption.

When it was decided that Kibaki would be the presidential candidate for the opposition in the 2002 elections that propelled him to state house, a clique of rich men came forward and stated that they would be responsible for raising the much needed funds to bankroll his presidential campaign.

Among these people was a super rich contractor known as Ephraim Maina of Kirinyaga construction company. In the rare event that you have never heard of the name of the person or his company, his company was notoriously known for doing shoddy jobs on roads or not doing anything after being paid huge sums of cash to repair the same.

To date, the Nyeri-Sagana road is dilapidated thanks to Kirinyaga construction who have already been paid to repair the road but nothing much has been done. Maina even went ahead and used his influence to stop councilors from Nyeri visiting state house recently after he got wind that the poor state of the road was in their agenda list.

Maina is said to be so well connected that even when Raila Odinga was minister for public works and roads, he blacklisted Kirinyaga construction and ordered treasury not to pay him his dues but the then finance minister David Mwiraria went ahead and released Maina's millions.

The flamboyant contractor is also known for his famous goat eating parties in his rural home which is usually attended by cabinet ministers including the current finance minister Amos Kimunya amongst many other top government and parastatal bosses.

Maina who is nursing political ambitions comes from Kibaki's Nyeri home district and is said to have started making his millions during the Moi era where road contractors were considered among the richest Kenyans as this was where corruption was at its worst with contractors over quoting jobs by several hundred millions and dividing the difference with senior civil servants.

President Kibaki should however not pretend that he did not know where his campaign funds came from as it was clear to him that there were plenty of unscrupulous businessmen who chipped in towards his campaign and these men naturally expected favors back when he landed at State house.

Some of them were content with plum parastatal appointments, read Eddy Njoroge and Joe Wanjui but others were strictly profiteers and were in a hurry to recover their money and needed lucrative government contracts as soon as possible to do so. The likes of Maina fell in this group.

Unfortunately, these will be the same people that Kibaki will reach out to when he goes about raising funds for the forthcoming general elections and chances are that these men will donate even more generously so as to ensure that the status quo is maintained at all costs.

It is this same people who have made Kibaki's government unpopular with accusations of failing to deal with high level corruption. Though they will be instrumental in vouching for Kibaki's return, they might also be responsible of causing the presidents defeat in the hands of an increasingly popular opposition.

This whole unfortunate chain of events raises the big question of how presidential candidates should raise funds for their campaigns. This is an issue that we will tackle in this blog in the coming days, watch this space.

Americans Murdered By Carjackers In Escalating Kenyan Crime Wave

Last week, two Americans were gunned down in a botched up car jacking incident that proved that foreigners are just as vulnerable as the locals in the runaway crime situation that has turned out to be a nightmare for president Kibaki's administration.

The Americans were dragged out of their vehicle and shot dead as they waited for a friend in the crime prone Nairobi-Naivasha highway in the comfort of their sports utility vehicle, SUV, which are popularly known here as four wheel drives.

Little did the Americans know that they had parked their vehicle in a crime infested area and when they were dragged out of their vehicle, one of the American ladies became hysterical and started screaming, this probably led to their shooting as the thugs must have panicked.

In record time, a contingent of policemen arrived at the scene and combed the area swiftly in a fruitful operation that led to the gunning down of two suspected carjackers and the recovery of two AK-47 assault rifles which incidentally has become the weapon of choice for local hoodlums.

That was not all, American federal bureau of investigations, FBI, personnel also visited the crime scene and collected evidence. The Americans are yet to disclose the identities of the victims and where exactly they worked in the country.

The escalation of violent crime in Kenya is nothing new and the situation could have been arrested four years ago when president Kibaki assured Kenyans that fighting crime would be top in his agenda.

Taxpayers expected more policemen patrolling the streets and better terms of service for the men and women who put their lives on the line daily as they go about their duties and face usually better armed hardcore criminals.

Kenya's police force is not just ill equipped but their morale is very low due to poor terms of service not to mention the squalid accommodation they are offered by their employers who are quick to accuse them of corruption yet they have failed to address themselves to the fundamental problems facing the force.

The contract of the police commissioner, Hussein Ali expires this coming month and it remains to be seen whether the president will extend it or replace him with another (most probably a member of Kibaki's own Kikuyu community) as he braces himself for general elections later in the year.

Ali had proposed radical and far-reaching reforms for the force which are yet to be implemented due to cash constraints and lack of political will on the ruling elite's part who seem to have their priorities up side down. Ali has tried hard and should be retained, but will also probably be glad to leave the thankless frustrating job he has at Vigilance house.

Why Roslyn Nambuye Should Be Kenya's Next Chief Justice

I first saw justice Nambuye on the streets of Machakos town walking with a crowd of children who I later learnt were part of about thirty kids she has adopted and stays with at her residence in Machakos town.

She was dressed very informally with an ankle-length flowery dress which seemed to have seen better days but what stood out was the large rosary hanging from her neck and her bald head which attracted a lot of curious glances from other pedestrians.

Everybody in Machakos knew justice Nambuye was one extremely religious lady and even the local crooked lawyers knew better than to try and approach her for a favor in exchange for cash.

This is why it came as a big shock when she was suspended during the radical surgery to rid off the judiciary corrupt and inept officers. She did not take the accusations lying down and fought tooth and nail to clear her name. It is possible that somebody somewhere assumed that just because her husband, Justice Daniel Aganyanya was on the list, then she too had to be there. Big mistake!!

In an unprecedented move, president Kibaki reinstated her even before the tribunal investigating her completed their job in what many perceive was a mistake in the first place to suspend the lady justice.

When vice president Moody Awori visited Machakos GK prison, he was taken aback when the prisoners presented him with a memorandum, which among other things wanted the reinstatement of lady justice Nambuye.

The prisoners argued that the judge had not only assisted in the construction of a church for the felons but was also involved in a programme that was out to better the living conditions of prisoners not to mention her humility and selflessness.

Apparently, many of those who signed the memorandum had been convicted by the lady justice and it really surprised the president's principal assistant to see convicts come in defense of a judge of all people.

Justice Nambuye is perhaps among the most respected judges in Kenya, her suspension and reinstatement notwithstanding and could be the perfect candidate for the position of the chief justice.

Kenya is yet to have a female chief justice though there are plenty of women in the judiciary including lawyers and judges. What about trying the truly God-fearing Roslyn Nambuye for the job? She could perhaps make a difference similarly to what she has already done for scores of Kenyans without caring which tribe they hail from.

Escalating Crime: Who Would Want To Eliminate A Traffic Policeman?

A bizarre shooting incident took place in Kenya's otherwise quiet sleepy coastal town this past weekend.

A lone gunman waited for a traffic policeman to come out of a restaurant and then shot him dead at point blank range. This latest chilling encounter raises a lot of questions but most of all one burning one; who would want a traffic policeman dead and why?

It would be understandable if the policeman involved dealt with criminals but traffic policemen only deal with matatu drivers and touts. There is of course the possibility that the hit had nothing to do with the man's occupation and could have been linked to his private life. Kenya has become notorious these days for hits targeted at people who can't keep their hands off other people's wives.

This brings to mind one recent early morning encounter on Riara Road in Nairobi where a man was car-jacked and driven to Ngong Road, near the war cemetery where he was given a chance to say goodbye to his lover via a mobile phone before he was shot dead in full view of his young children whom he was taking to school. Rumour has it that the hit men were hired by the woman's accountant husband and the gunmen were so sympathetic of the suffering and mental anguish he had gone through—knowing his wife was coming home late from the office almost daily not because of work (at least not what she had been employed to do) but was in fact dishing out favors that are exclusively supposed to be for him and him alone—that they gave him a huge discount for doing "the job."

Another possibility, albeit a very remote one, is that the traffic policeman would have infuriated some matatu tout or driver somewhere to such an extent that they opted to end his life.

Whatever the motive for this strange murder, chances are high that this latest incident will join a very long list of unsolved murders that the Kenya police have in their bulging cold case files section.
