Latest Githongo Anglo Leasing Tapes: What is The Expected Impact On The Kibaki Government?

Listen to the Mwiraria tapes

Just when former ethics PS John Githongo was starting to sound like a tired old record that keeps on repeating itself, he has made good his promise and delivered fresh evidence in the form of brand new Anglo Leasing tapes. The new tapes clearly implicate former finance minister Daudi Mwiraria in the mega scandal that has refused to go away.

The president's handlers who were beginning to give each other knowing looks over the fact that Mr Githongo was now sounding like a spent force, must now scramble back into action to see what quick repair can be done for this shaky government in the wake of the new allegations. There is actually very little that they will be able to do in damage control.

But what exactly is the expected impact of the latest Anglo Leasing tapes? After all the last time round, opposition king pins like Kalonzo Musoka and Raila Odinga gleefully announced that 2006 would be an election year. This prediction was mainly based on the fact that they considered Githongo's first Anglo Leasing bombshell had enough impact to bring down the Kibaki government. It was not to be. African governments, it seems are made of sterner stuff, or more accurately are capable of hanging on in a way that would make any leech envious.

So the question is; will it be business as usual for the Kibaki government amid the latest damaging salvo unleashed by Mr Githongo?

Not quiet. This time there is one huge difference. And that is the fact that we are in an election year. That fact alone makes a hell of a difference. And those directing Mr Githongo on the timing of his deadly releases must have known that and timed the latest one to be early this year. There is even the possibility that talk of a possible early election spurred them on to release the tapes as they did, before the end of the first month of the year.

There is also something else that is different this time. And that is the fact that a cabinet minister who has recently been cleared and re-instated back into government has once again been implicated. Energy Minister Kiraitu Murungi's name seems to be right at the center of the Anglo Leasing scum as everything seems to have his fingerprints. The minister who wrote poetry in his absence from the government, that basically cried out for re-instatement must now be seething and gritting his teeth and basically cursing the day he met one John Githongo.

The fact that Murungi was cleared, (ignore the AGs meaningless PR statements that investigations are still going on) is extremely damaging to the current administration. It is now clear that what we have here is a government that is not only unwilling to tackle corruption, but one that is deep in the mud of corruption. It is also clear that a huge amount of public funds and resources are being spent to cover up corruption.

In short, this is very, very bad news coming when it has, in an election year. The government of course will keep on denying the allegations but they are the ones now beginning to sound like a tired old record stuck at some point where the same once melodious musical notes and words are being repeated over and over again.

This latest development to me has launched the decline of Narc Kenya, which at this rate spells nothing but doom. By the time we go to the polls Narc-Kenya may have dwindled to be just be as influential as some brief case political parties out there.

Daudi Mwiraria's dramatic statement in the latest tapes that "this is a matter that can bring this government down," may just come to pass, if not sooner then at the ballot box.

The Githongo Tapes: Is President Kibaki On Them?

The million dollar question on everybody's mind is did John Githongo also
record the president in his tapes and is he planning to release them at an opportune time (like just before the elections)?

It is likely that Githongo also recorded his conversations with the president taking into consideration that if he managed to tape senior government ministers, what could stop him from recording his obstinate boss who was condoning corruption by failing to act against the culprits?

And if Githongo has recordings between him and Kibaki, it is likely that he will conveniently release them just before the coming general elections in a bid to 'politically finish' his former boss hence settling scores once and for all.

Others are of the opinion that Githongo must be having lots of information concerning corruption in Kenya considering the way his hosts—the British government—are treating him.

It is not clear how the former PS managed to flee the country and settle so fast in Oxford, England after what must have been months of preparation carrying his deadly audio tapes all over the place. Though his relationship with the then ambassador, Mr Clay was said to be more than cordial with talk that they were extremely close personal friends and may have seen eye to eye on personal as well as political issues.

There is no way the British government could accord Githongo so much preferential treatment if he did not have major dossiers concerning the high and mighty in Kenya as far as corruption was concerned.

For Githongo to have fled Kenya without being kicked out of State house first, he must have been in possession of damaging evidence against his boss and chose to flee before he was found with it and probably charged with treason, a capital offence which carries the death sentence.

It might only be a matter of time before Kenya's eccentric president will be heard on tape attempting to compromise Githongo on the multi-million scandal which has refused to go away and will be the biggest burden that the Kibaki administration will have to carry as they try to patch up the damage and re-launch their re-election strategy.

And again, the nagging question springs up again, is Githongo working with ODM-Kenya to malign the Kibaki government ahead of the elections on the promise that he will be given a big job if ODM wins the polls? This is what cheap propagandists would have us believe. The truth is that this Githongo thing is much bigger than ODM-Kenya.

Seven Signs That The Kibaki Government Is Corrupt

There are those who have been reluctant to bring themselves to believe that the Kibaki government is corrupt. Apart from the new tapes released by John Githongo, here are 7 clear signs to prove that there is plenty of corruption at the heart of the Kibaki administration:

1.Increasingly regular visits to State House by suspected drug lords like John Harun Mwau and Juja MP William Kabogo.

2. Visits to State House by numerous delegations asking for favors in exchange for support. In other more mature democracies this may pass off as normal political horse trading. In Kenya it is not. Moe so when you consider the fact that at the beginning of his tenure President Kibaki turned away numerous delegations at the State house gate. So what caused the change of heart?

3. President Kibaki's recent moves of warming up to the former president Moi who epitomizes corruption and whose successful tactics at political survival have always included evil and corrupt means. Secondly, warming up to President Moi means that Kibaki has something in common with the former president. Both now have a lot to hide and lots of ill-gotten wealth to protect.

4. The change in the heart of donors who prefer to be called development partners, they were warm and friendly to Kibaki at the beginning of his tenure. What happened? There can only be one explanation; they realized what was going on. Namely corruption tupu.

5. The former permanent secretary for ethics and governance based at State House, John Githongo flees for his life after loosing the battle to fight corruption. If you doubt the other signs, this one, you cannot ignore.

6. The Kibaki government fails to prosecute those involved in the Goldenberg scandal after spending hundreds of millions of shillings in taxpayers money in a useless commission of inquiry into the affair. Somebody simply paid off somebody else to leav the matter alone. And guess where the buck stops?

7. The failure by the government to deal with the Artur brothers who were known to be international criminals dealing with drugs and guns. On the contrary, they were offered protection by local security agencies including the police and criminal investigations department.

Any more signs from readers out there to prove this case for voters?

What's The Difference Between Goldenberg And Anglo Leasing?

The latest Anglo Leasing tapes released by former ethics PS now in exile, John Githongo have raised the question as to how different the latest scandal that has dogged the Kibaki administration is, from the Goldenberg affair of the Moi era.

The truth is that both have plenty of similarities. Both started out as illegal projects to raise money for key individuals in government and both quickly degenerated further to something much worse. Both involved the falsifying of either documents or key elements in the transaction, so as to camouflage the whole exercise. And the similarities go on and on.

But there is one earth-shattering similarity that Kenyans must now face. And that is the fact that both scandals were executed with the full knowledge and blessing of the highest office in the land at the time they happened. Numerous reports and articles on both scandals have always omitted to state one important point. Namely the fact that there is no way one can get the kind of funds being talked about here out of the treasury without the approval of the president.

There are now whispers that the other bombshell that Githongo may be keeping under his sleeve, probably to be released at some future date are actual recordings with the President himself. Apart from the numerous legal issues such a recording can evoke, it is already clear even without them that President Kibaki was informed and took no action.

Even as the president's campaign had started switching to high gear with numerous planted agents and pretenders causing havoc in every important online discussion forum and site discussing Kenyan politics, there are now a number of sobering questions about the legitimacy—let alone the possibilities of the re-election—of this evil government that Kenyans will now have to confront.

The truth is that because of the power vested by the constitution on those who authorized both Anglo Leasing (and Goldenberg before it) getting to the bottom of both will require nothing short of divine intervention.

Githongo Releases The Mwiraria Anglo Leasing Tapes: What Is The British Government Really Up To?

As John Githongo was releasing more damaging information of how president Kibaki's most trusted men covered up the multi million Anglo Leasing scandal, the British high commissioner to Kenya was issuing a statement expressing displeasure on how Kibaki had chosen to retain the public officials implicated in the mega-scandal.

It is therefore not too far fetched to assume that the former permanent secretary in charge of ethics and governance is closely working with the British government as far as the Anglo Leasing scandal is concerned. Little wonder that his critics have never missed an opportunity to brand the former State house official a spy for her majesty's government.

It is evident now that the British government is not happy with Nairobi on the way it has dealt with the multi million scandal which implicates vice president Moody Awori and Attorney General Amos Wako, current energy minister Kiraitu Murungi, former finance minister, Daudi Mwiraria among others.

The British government has been exerting sustained pressure on the Kenyan government over the scandal since the days of high commissioner Edward Clay to now Adam Wood who have all expressed displeasure on how the government was dealing with the scandal.

The United Kingdom has good reason to be enraged about the entire episode considering that the new regime which took over from Kanu has denied British companies numerous contracts that they have traditionally enjoyed over the years. However this has not been done with fair play.

For instance, Kenya has been buying Land Rover's for the police and provincial administration over the years but switched to Toyota when the NARC government came to power. Rovers are British while Toyota's are famous Japanese vehicles.

According to the former minister for internal security and provincial administration, Chris Murungaru, the bad blood between London and Nairobi started there and he is also not far from the truth as to why Whitehall is so keen about the Sh 50 billion Anglo Leasing scam and to see president Kibaki lose the elections later this year.

One thing that president Kibaki must not forget is the fact that former president Moi survived for many years because of the support from the British. Yet Kibaki is using Moi tactics and option to do without British support. This could be one of the most fatal mistakes Kibaki has ever made in his long political career.

Crime Still On The Rise: The Involvement Of Ex-police And Servicemen In High Profile Crimes

The daring robberies that are being staged today carry the hallmarks of well trained men handling sophisticated weapons with ease and deadly efficiency which leaves the authorities with hunches that more rogue policemen are engaging in violent crime along with former military types.

It came as no surprise to the public recently when police revealed that one of the masterminds of the sh35 million Habib bank robbery in Mombasa was a former Kenya air force soldier.

A month ago, several gangsters were arrested in Machakos after a botched attempt to rob an ATM and a beer distributor. The ringleader was a serving GSU (general service unit) soldier who was soon to retire and was waiting for his dues to be processed.

Majority of policemen who end up being sacked from the force these days find it difficult to fit in society and survive like other civilians and due to the fact they don’t have skills that can enable them get other jobs, they join the underworld where they are welcomed with eager open arms.

Those in the underworld celebrate when they are joined by ex-cops for the simple reason that these men come with vital knowledge in handling firearms and know how most security arrangements are undertaken, for instance, the transportation of money to and from banks among other things. Where they are short of information, they have the contacts.

It has also been noted that it is only these former policemen who have the guts to stage brazen heists and exchange fire with their former colleagues in another move to settle scores with authorities for sacking them.

At one time, police in Nairobi were puzzled when they started recovering several modern Cessca pistols which are so complicated that the police had to retrain their men on how to use the firearms yet gangsters seemed to be very conversant with them. How did it happen?

It later emerged that those dealing in illegal firearms also have their experts, usually former soldiers or policemen who give quick firing lessons to those who purchase the illicit guns.

The only way to check this trend is for the police to keep tabs on fired cops and soldiers but again this is almost impossible considering their limited resources both human and financial hence the common unwritten rule in the force that violent criminals should be shot dead on the spot.

Violence Against Journalists: Why Is It Always Rebecca Nduku On The Receiving End?

Every time there seems to be a scuffle or violent encounter with journalists, one name always seems to be at the top of the list of victims. One Rebecca Nduku. Who is Rebecca Nduku and why is it that she always seems to be on the receiving end?

Rebecca Nduku is the East African Standard newspapers photo journalist who was assaulted last week by a security officer of tele-evangelist Margaret Wanjiru after a press conference at her Jesus is alive ministries headquarters in Nairobi. She is he same photo journalist who had a nasty encounter with President Kibaki's security detail last year where she was roughed up and lost her camera.

It is not clear why the guard picked on Rebecca among a battery of several journalists who were covering the event, both men and women, but for those who know Rebecca well, its not difficult to speculate why she became fair game to the evangelists 'heavies'.

For starters, Rebecca is probably the most aggressive female photo-journalist in Kenya and probably East and Central Africa today if not the best. She has this thing in her to always get the best picture at whatever cost including running ahead of the subject amid jostling from her colleagues in the profession.

In the early 90s, I had an opportunity of working with Rebecca at the Standard newspapers where she was on 'attachment' prior to completing her photo journalism course.

The svelte, young and attractive photographer was a welcoming addition to the Standard newsroom which was then filled with many aging journalists many in their 60's and on their way out.

Among them were amorous senior reporters and editors who thought they could easily score with Nduku since she was fresh from college and naïve on the ways of the world let alone the media. They were in for the shock of the life.

Rebecca was so obsessed with her work that she got completely oblivious to the 'passes' being made on her as she went on to quickly prove her worth as a photo-journalist of repute. Her brief stint at the media house earned her lots of accolades from senior journalists who quickly saw the great potential in the gifted young photographer.

Her sheer aggression and determination was admirable especially at a time when very few women were in the field of photojournalism. If I remember well, there were only two female photographers at Standard at the time, Nduku and one Tabitha Atwoli. It is not clear what became of Atwoli.

This could be the reason why Rebecca is always being picked on by bodyguards of the high and the mighty and if the past events are anything to go by, the attractive Standard journalist should never lower her guard especially now as this is an election year and tempers always rise among news sources not to mention the goons who tag along.

The other major incident came about last year at a presidential function where a member of the elite presidential guard snatched Rebecca's digital camera claiming she was photographing the presidential limousine, which was wrong and posed a security risk.

It was only after the intervention of the presidential press unit director, Isaiah Kabira that the security man, a bomb expert, returned the camera and did not even bother to apologize to the diligent lady who has made a mark for women in local journalism.

The Anglo Leasing Circus Continues

The ever-smiling attorney General Amos Wako shot himself on the foot yet again yesterday. After publishing in the Kenya gazette that vice president Moody Awori and cabinet minister Kiraitu Murungi have been cleared from the multi million Anglo Leasing scandal which is haunting the Kibaki administration even as we approach the general elections, the AG added a surprising twist to the clean bill of health he had given.

After an outcry from the civil society and opposition politicians, Wako swiftly 'clarified' that the duo had not been cleared off all the allegations and on the contrary, they had only been absolved from one of the dubious deals in the Anglo Leasing monster which will definitely cost Kibaki his re-election late this year. The AG added that the pair were still "under investigations."

According to the former permanent secretary for governance and ethics, John Githongo, the scandal involved 18 procurement contracts where the government committed Sh 50 billion to non existent companies for the supplies of goods which were never delivered yet a large chunk of money was paid out.

After fleeing the country, Githongo spilled the beans in the United Kingdom where he named the top politicians involved in the scam with his list also including former ministers David Mwiraria and Chris Murungaru. The latter was hauled to court while Mwiraria is still in the cold though there is pressure from his Meru community to reinstate him.

Wako seems to have made his latest strange statement at the behest of powerful state house operatives including the president's spin doctors who have an election in their hands this year and there are already strong signs Kibaki could lose the polls.

The Anglo Leasing scandal has never been solved to date and the best the government could do was to haul to court some civil servants who's crime was taking orders from their superiors who are now walking scot-free in the streets of Nairobi or the corridors of State House, like nothing happened.

These unending Anglo Leasing investigations have become rather tiresome and irritating to Kenyans. Many are sure that even video footage clearly showing the culprits' hands in the cookie jar will still not be enough evidence to prosecute.

No Reforms No Elections: What Year Are We In? 1997 Or 2007?

History seems to be repeating itself in Kenya as opposition leaders once again sing in unison that they will not go to the polls until the government initiates some minimum reforms to level 'the playing field' ahead of the December elections.

In the frontline for the reforms are non other than erstwhile presidential aspirants Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta who have called on Kenyans to go to the streets if the government refuses to carry out crucial reforms ahead of the polls.

The signs are already there that Kibaki's men have panicked as a result of the enormous support enjoyed by ODM-Kenya and if the past events are anything to go by, Kibaki might go down in the history books as the first Kenyan president to serve only one term.

It is a bit too far fetched to expect Kibaki's administration to initiate any meaningful reforms considering that the promise of delivering a new constitution within 100 days in power has never been achieved even 1,460 days down the line.

Though the justice and constitution minister Martha Karua seems to have softened her hardline stand towards the issue of the constitution, it is evident that this is only part of an elaborate political game, since the time left before the elections is too little to initiate any changes which is an advantage to the ruling elite.

President Kibaki will play the double role of being a competitor as well as the referee in a game that the opposition is poised for a smooth victory as long as they remain united against Kibaki's tribalistic government that has disillusioned millions of unemployed youth who constitute majority of the voters. A government that has lost the goodwill of the people virtually overnight.

The recent move by the president to go ahead and appoint electoral commissioners without consulting the other political parties speaks volumes on how the incumbent will use the powers vested upon him in the constitution to ensure he wins the elections at all costs.

However, former president Moi tried to do the same with Uhuru Kenyatta by giving him an upper hand by instructing the provincial administration and civil service to campaign for him but the forces against Kanu were so overwhelming that those entrusted to campaign for the ruling party were sucked in by the opposition wave.

Majority of Kenyans only know too well that even if Kibaki refuses to level the playing field by allowing for minimal reforms, this will not only make him lose a substantial amount of votes, but will also ensure that his defeat will be resounding.

How To Make A Quick Tax-Free Million In 2007: Brief Case Political Party Business Idea

No Kenyan had ever heard of a party known as RAP-K (Republican Alliance Party of Kenya) before the controversy that followed the announcement of Pastor Pius Muiru's political ambitions.

Party officials have since said that the famous evangelist is not the party's presidential candidate and neither have they reached a decision on who their presidential candidate will be in the forthcoming general elections.

One of the top RAP-K is very well known to this writer as an ambitious small business entrepreneur. Knowing him the way I do, it is clear that the pastor's announcement is very premature and too early in the game to meet the objectives of RAP-K or any other brief case political parties.

Indeed there are numerous brief case political parties out there and more are being registered every week. Yet for many of these parties, political office is not the main objective. The whole idea is to make some quick tax-free funds.

With this in mind, it does not make sense to announce the party's presidential candidate this early in the game. That would be absolutely ridiculous when this is potentially the biggest cash generator on the shelves. Brief case parties usually cash in most during party nominations but even more after party nominations of major political parties. Aggrieved parties who will have lost those elections will usually go out hunting for another party und which to stand for elections. Quite often a brief case party will have more than one person interested in the party nomination and I therefore becomes a question of willing buyer, willing seller.

You can guess the kind of money we are talking about for a desperate presidential hopeful who has missed the boat with their first choice party, but still want to go ahead and stand for president. They can pay anything, even millions of shillings.

In the event that this business idea is new to you, remember it is not too late to get a political party registered.

One word of caution though. Part of the reforms that the opposition are pushing to be passed before the elections is an amendment allowing for independent candidates. If they succeed against this rather stubborn administration and that becomes law before the next general elections, then this lucrative business idea will disintegrate overnight.

Why John Githongo Must Stand For President

One of the things that Kenyans should look for in their next president is a man who can selflessly fight corruption with a vengeance, even at the risk of losing their own lives. Yep, this corruption thing is just not going to be uprooted so easily. Yet getting rid of corruption, or reducing it, is a topmost priority for the nation at the moment.

One Kenyan who has already displayed this quality and shows no signs of letting up any time soon is former ethics PS John Githongo.

Once again we appeal to him (we know he reads this blog regularly) to consider standing for the highest office in the land. Thee are those analysts who would be quick to point out that he is the wrong tribe. But that would be beside the point. By declaring his interest in the highest office in the land, Githongo can attract a lot of international attention to the Kenyan elections, which would be invaluable considering the games we are already seeing being put into motion.

Kenya needs you to stand for President, John.

Current Crime Wave Must Be Linked To The Forthcoming General Elections

Regular readers of this blog will be well aware of the fact that I have covered this subject in great detail before. They will also remember that I predicted that the rate of crime will shoot up dramatically as we approach the general elections. That prediction has now come to pass.

The rate at which Kenyans get carjacked and murdered is alarming (in the most recent case a Kikuyu, Kiambu District, an electrician was carjacked at the gate to his house, murdered and his body dumped at a nearby river where it was found several days later). But that is not all. We are also seeing robberies that are targeting some colossal amounts of cash. Kshs 35 million vanished from Habib Bank in Mombasa last week and so far the police have few clues. Then there was a robbery at Barclays Bank, Lavington last Saturday that broke new ground. The thugs posing as technicians, gained access to the ATM machine and literally emptied the till.

Gaining access to an ATM machine is not easy. The only way the thugs would have done it would have been from inside the bank and with some very expert advice from an ATM expert. There are not that many in the country, but then there is the additional fact that we also have plenty of foreigners in the country, many of them criminal elements who have picked up all sorts of skills that they are too willing to hire out to some thugs to use locally.

All in all the timing of the current heightened level of crime has to be linked to the general elections and some of our more sinister politicians raising funds for their electioneering campaigns.

Margaret Wanjiru And Pastor Pius Muiru In Politics: The Untold Story Behind The Public Anger

Experts Say That It Is A Sign That The Political Ruling Class Should Not Ignore

Right across Kenya, some very fierce and emotional debate is currently going on, all triggered off by a recent chain of events that has thrust Bishop Margaret Wanjiru and Pastor Pius Muiru into the limelight and indeed under public scrutiny for many things but mostly for the vast wealth that the pair are said to own as a result of their work for the Lord.

Listening to Kenyans, the ruling emotion in most people is one of anger. Anger at the vast wealth accumulated in what most believe is at the expense of ordinary Kenyans' struggling to survive under harsh and difficult times. It is very weird indeed how rapidly public opinion can change and there is no denying that the work of the two well known Kenyan television evangelists depends very heavily indeed on the right public sentiments and image.

Admittedly, of the two preachers most of the debate is centered on Bishop Margaret Wanjiru (the story that will just not go away) and how she angrily dismissed a man who claims to be her former husband and the father of her two boys. Yet the bigger story should be that of Pastor Pius Muiru who wants to be the next president of Kenya.

Why more interest in Bishop Wanjiru? It is partly because the rag-to-riches story of Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has captured the imagination of many Kenyans across the nation. Throw in the public utterances that have effectively cornered the Bishop, plus an incident where journalists were roughed up, and you have the aura of mystery that creates endless debates and intense public interest.

But there is an untold side of the story that in all the current madness augurs well for the nation. And this is really something only the spiritual can understand.

For a long time now, experts and analysts in spiritual matters have pointed to certain weaknesses in some of the major church organizations that have sprung up in recent years. Their main argument has been that the structures of these new churches are such that the leader of the ministry has no covering or higher authority both for their own protection and that of the souls they oversee. These authorities, apart from overseeing the way in which the organization is run (including the thorny issue of finances) are the "court of appeal" in church matters involving members and the leaders of the particular ministries. Mainstream churches have very rigid structures that do just this and even some new church organizations, albeit many of which have not grown as rapidly as the ones now under spotlight also have them.

Those who believe strongly in covering have said again and again that having no cover or higher authority is like building a house and leaving it without a proper roof. All may seem okay for a while, at least until that day that it will rain. Well, the day of rain has arrived and the results are there for all to scrutinize and debate openly.

The good news, these same analysts and observers of church matters say, is that for a long time it has been predicted that the day for judgment for the Kenyan political class was coming. Many in the church looked forward to it gleefully without understanding one fundamental principal of the Almighty. Just as they say charity begins in the home, God's judgments always begins in HIS own house.

This means that if this theory is correct, then on a date not very far from today, we shall see what the political class have dreaded with all their hearts for a long time and yet what many ordinary citizens have shed tears and even blood in wishing for. The judgment of those who have stolen and raped the nation of Kenya and murdered the innocent and yet still seek to spread lies and propaganda in a desperate effort to put off the inevitable.

Indeed there is one thing that is very difficult to deny. And that is the fact that the speed at which things have moved over the last 7 days or so strongly suggests some divine hand or intervention in that seemingly petty small issues have suddenly blown and escalated into serious national concerns that look like they will have very grave repercussions on quite a number of people.

Does ODM-Kenya Have Big Plans For John Githongo?

The former permanent secretary for governance and ethics, John Githongo has yet again taken a swipe at the Kibaki administration raising more questions than answers as to why he fired the salvo at the beginning of an election year.

Most interesting is that the former anti-corruption czar does not release any new information in his latest statement to the two leading newspapers in the country, the Daily Nation and the East African Standard (and only vows to do so in the near future).

It therefore came as no surprise when the burly Githongo was asked about the rumours at ODM-Kenya to the effect that the party has lined him up for the post of head of the public service and secretary to the cabinet should they ascend to power.

Githongo vehemently denied the 'talk' and said he had not reached any deal with the ODM-Kenya leaders and answered with a question: who in ODM would want to work with him after his tenure with Kibaki which saw him being uncompromising when it came to corruption.

Another school of thought says that Githongo who is considered a hero by majority of Kenyans is the perfect person to be used in an anti-Kibaki campaign (the emphasis is on the word "used"). Not only is he seen as being a man of probity, but he also has the ammunition to politically bury his former boss.

The sly ODM-Kenya brigade know this only too well and they are bound to try their best to get to use him to 'finish' Kibaki. However it is clear that many of the corrupt characters within ODM will not be as naïve as to want him anywhere near such an influential and powerful position if they form the next government.

Githongo has already indicated that he is homesick and would be glad to return home not to mention that the English weather has a bad effect on those who come from the tropics as the cold there is known to be almost unbearable sometimes.

Word is out that the last has not been heard from Githongo who is said to be preparing another detailed dossier on how senior government officials fleeced billions of shillings from public coffers through dubious procurement contracts. Githongo would want us to believe that he has left the most damning and juiciest for the end.

In the much talked about Anglo Leasing scandal which Githongo exposed, the government committed almost Sh 50 billion to 18 clearly dubious contracts with non-existent companies for the supply of goods which were never delivered yet some payments had already been effected.

Most of these deals included defense contracts including acquiring a boat for the Kenyan navy and telecommunication gear for the police along with the construction of a military command post in the Karen area known as project 'NEXUS'.

Vice president Moody Awori, Minister Kiraitu Murungi, his former cabinet colleagues Chris Murungaru and David Mwiraria along with Attorney General Amos Wako were implicated in the multi million scandals but nothing much has been done to date.

Murungi was sacked but recently reinstated by Kibaki while Murungaru and Mwiraria are still in the cold with Murungaru facing a court case arisising from the deals.

The Anglo Leasing scandal is probably the worst thing that ever happened to Kibaki's presidency and will obviously dent the legacy which the London-School-of-Economis- trained economist wanted to leave behind.

This will be the excess baggage that he will have to carry as he prepares for his re-election later this year in a polls that he may lose mainly due to the scandal which implicated his bosom friends who also happened to be senior government officials at the time.

Githongo resigned his position and fled the country as a result of the scandal. He claimed he received death threats and warnings to stop pursuing the matter by senior cabinet ministers including Murungi who was recently reinstated and given back his old ministry of energy to the chagrin of majority of Kenyans.

Having been elected on an anti corruption platform, the Kibaki administration could easily lose the forthcoming elections on account of the Anglo Leasing scandal and who better to remind Kenyans of that multi million dubious deal than John Githongo himself.

Information On How Two Presidents Of Kenya Accumulated Vast Wealth And How The Third Broke A Promise To Stop The Madness

It is said that birds of the same feather tend to flock together. Thus it has not surprised anybody that families of the two first presidents of Kenya, namely President Jomo Kenyatta and President Daniel Arap Moi have been very close for sometime now. But what has worried, shocked and really puzzled many is the recent developments that have seen a president elected by Kenyans mainly on the promise of dealing with the political ruling class, now openly warming up to them and their ways. It should be obvious that you do not deal with corruption without touching on the political ruling class.

It raises questions on President Kibaki that will probably be best answered an analyzed when he is out of power.

However for the record, Kenya's first president accumulated land like there was no tomorrow and his kitchen cabinet dealt ruthlessly with anybody who dared stand in their way. That was why many Kenyans supported the ascending into power of a simple former Kalenjin teacher who had to be persuaded for days on end to enetr politics in the first place. Many saw Moi as the sort of character that would never fit it with the emerging political ruling class, and therefore one who would break the country out of the dangerous foundation of looting laid by the first president. Alas, it was not to be. Where the first president had an appetite for rich fertile land (the old man would lick his lips whenever he talked about arthi yenye rotuba meaning fertile land) the second had an insatiable appetite for companies and businesses.

Here is a transparency International list of companies still owned by former President Moi and his associates and proxies;

The fascinating thing about this list is that it is not complete. It is estimated to cover only about 30% of the full, complete list. Secondly it is useful to remember that Raila Odinga is on record for defending former President Moi when the then new Narc government wanted to recover most of these assets on behalf of the people of Kenya.

Samuel Gichuru's Woes: Does Former KPLC Boss Really Have Aids?

One of the mysteries that will hopefully be solved in the near future is how one Samuel Gichuru has remained a free man even after a 2003 probe into the financial mismanagement of the giant Kenya Power And Lighting under his tenure as the managing director unearthed numerous irregularities.

An extremely hilarious incident took place the other day when shortly after a divorce case involving Gichuru—that mainly centered on financial settlement—went public, it was reported that the KACC was investigating the former power boss. I say hilarious because it would seem that this so-called commission that is using up millions every month in taxpayers money, is filed with staffers who comfortably sit in their offices and reads the newspapers to look for whom to prosecute. This happens as the big looters get "cleared" to re-occupy public office that they left only a few months previously under intense public pressure.

There is no doubt that Gichuru's vast wealth, now being fought over by women seemingly emerging from the woodwork, was accumulated during his tenure at Electricity House.

There were many rather creative ways Gichuru and his cronies within the company came up with to raise extra revenue to keep the largest power distribution company in East Africa running amid massive looting. For instance the charge for reconnection of disconnected electricity rapidly rose within a very short time and so did the efficiency in disconnecting electricity right n the dot when the due date arrived.

It is said that another scheme involving insurance coverage for the vast valuable assets of the state corporation also put a lot of money into Gichuru's pockets. As did sales of generators during the power crisis of the year 2000. Even the purchase of transformers at inflated prices (very clever because how many people would know the correct price for a transformer?) helped lace the pockets of the KPLC boss.

Every man who suddenly comes into unlimited wealth tends to end up in some vice. For Gichuru it was always obvious what that vice was. It was women. It is from this weakness that the then fledging new gutter press cashed in, in a major way the late 90s and beyond. It reached point where any new gutter press publisher would simply typeset a Gichuru story detailing his escapades with somebody's wife and they would then go to Electricity House and collect Kshs 100,000. Incidentally this is how one of the most popular and widely read weekly gutter press newspapers was launched.

The consequence of this behavior apart from the court cases is now said to be Aids. It is claimed that the former KPLC boss is HIV positive and this is one of the reasons why there seems to be a desperate battle for his estate being waged by at least three women.

General Elections 2007: Focus On Presidential Candidate William Ruto

William Samoei Ruto was born in 1966 in Eldoret to humble beginnings though his family was not as poor as he claims and this is just one of the things that he has lied to Kenyans about in his attempt to endear himself to the public as he goes about his bid for the presidency.

The young Ruto was known to be witty and quickly developed signs of not only being selfish but it is said that the youngster always saw himself as being superior to his peers in the rural setting, although admittedly he seemed to be more intelligent and ambitious than his Kalenjin contemporaries at Kamagut primary school.

Maintaining good grades all through, Ruto secured a place at the university of Nairobi in the early 80's where he undertook an arts degree and on completion returned home where he became an untrained secondary school teacher.

And so we would never have heard of him had his big break not come in 1991. By a twist of fate that year, he managed to meet former president Moi's favorite son Gideon and the two got on so well and became bosom buddies with William doubling up as Gideon's alter ego and political hatchet man.

He however shot to the limelight in 1992 when he was appointed as one of the officials who were to spearhead former president Moi's campaign among the youth through the notorious lobby group the Youth for Kanu 92 better known as YK92.

As the groups' secretary to this well funded political lobby group, the young and ambitious Ruto started handling real money and as the funds flowed in from public coffers, Ruto managed to keep quite a substantial amount for himself without other officials knowing about it.

This was not too difficult because during that memorable campaign which impoverished millions of Kenyans, the chairman and former Lugari MP and now KADDU party chairman Cyrus Jirongo supervised the dishing out of money on a scale that had never been seen in Kenya and probably Africa, before. Several witnesses say that Cartons of cash (all in Kshs 500 notes) were stacked from the bottom and touched the roof at the YK92 offices at Anniversary Towers. Even today, it is mind boggling just to imagine the scene. The idea was simple, each official was to supervise the mass bribery of voters to ensure that President Moi was voted back to power.

The young and ambitious Ruto did exactly that but most of the money he received ended up in his pockets and instead, he chose to use his mouth more as he convinced angry and hungry Kenyans to vote for Moi.

With the Kanu victory secured later that year, Ruto and other top officials in the lobby group became Moi's blue eyed boys and were quickly introduced to the corruption networks that were running then, where they made millions of shillings, quite often overnight.

Ruto ignored the smaller deals and quickly identified where the real quick money was in these corruption networks. According to the constitution, the president still has authority to allocate land to private citizens including prime plots in Nairobi. And that is how the former untrained teacher managed to acquire prime pieces of land in Nairobi which he subsequently sold to parastatals at highly inflated prices and invested most of the money in real estate and agriculture.

To date, he still has a corruption case in court where he is charged with acquiring public property hived off Ngong Forest, which he later sold to the Kenya pipeline corporation at an inflated cost running into hundreds of millions.

The matter is yet to be heard and determined as the Eldoret MP has filed numerous objections based on constitutional references over the matter but that is another story.

In 1997, the young Ruto felt he was rich and well known to vie for the Eldoret North parliamentary seat which he secured and was appointed assistant minister.

To date Ruto is the only assistant minister in Kenya's history who attended cabinet meetings to the chagrin of fully-fledged ministers who feared Moi so much that they could not dare question the anomaly.

By this time, Ruto had acquired a big fortune through corruption and even his appointment as a full minister in Moi's government did not excite him much in terms of power but was convenient for him as he continued looting public coffers.

It should also be noted that Ruto knew how to handle Moi and even blackmail him through embarrassing public utterances, which prompted the former president to pass more cash in Ruto's way to make him content and to effectively stop his bickering.

Today, Ruto has changed his old Kanu jacket and is currently attempting to convince Kenyans that he is not the selfish and greedy type as he goes for the highest office in the land but majority of Kenyans probably including his good self know very well that he can't make it anywhere near the presidency.

What is there is that Ruto has not changed much and his presidential bid is to simply put him in a good position when ODM Kenya is dividing the "national cake" assuming that they manage to wrestle power from president Kibaki in general elections 2007.

Ruto will be more than content if he is appointed to the cabinet then as this will put him in a position to protect his ill-gotten wealth and perhaps accumulate more at the expense of Kenyans who mostly live below the poverty line and on less than a dollar a day. His criminal court case could even disappear with a little pressure from the executive arm of government then. After all it has happened many times before.

Countdown To Elections 2007: Four Moi Kids Want To Follow In Daddy's Footsteps

As former president Moi's son Gideon completes his first term as an MP of the constituency his father represented, three other Moi sons are aspiring to go to parliament in a move that will not go down well with the ex-president.

Moi's eldest son Jonathan along with his brothers Raymond and Philip are all aspiring for the Rongai parliamentary seat, which is adjacent to Baringo and also has a big Kalenjin population.

Moi's siblings are rich enough and the attractive salaries and allowances that parliament offers is not what has prompted the trio to plunge into politics but it is definitely power which they are very conversant with considering 'daddy' was president for 24 years and has plenty to show for it.

The fact that the three brothers are all aspiring for the same seat will not only be embarrassing for their father but will make the aging grand master of Kenyan politics look very bad, as it will be perceived by the public that he has no control over his sons and worse still, it will portray disunity in his household.

It is also common knowledge that one of the sons will seek nomination on an ODM party ticket, the outfit that their father detests and even broke ranks with his very own "project" one Uhuru Kenyatta for joining. The very same movement, which has also turned out to be his bossom buddy, president Kibaki's worst nightmare.

Raymond has indicated that he will seek the nomination on a Kanu ticket while the younger sibling, Philip is opting for the ODM-Kenya vehicle which will definitely make him cross swords with his father who has made it public that "ODM ni shetani" (ODM is the devil)..

Jonathan on the other hand is yet to make up his mind and chances are that he will be contesting on a Kanu ticket and fighting it out with his younger brother in the party nominations to the chagrin of their father. The former rally driver could even opt to use one of the dozens of brief case parties that will be floating around this time.

It is evident that now that Moi has retired, he did not just lose grip of controlling the country but also his family and this is depicted by this outrageous move by his sons who are better known for their philandering lifestyles and care-free attitudes which embarrassed their father a great deal when he was the occupant of State House.

Chances are that the trio may all fail in their political aspirations considering that even if their dad wanted to support them (which he does not) his clout among the Kalenjin is rapidly waning by the day. They will therefore have to carry their own cross, which means that chances of embarrassing daddy are quite high.

Count Down Elections 2007: What Next For Uhuru Kenyatta?

Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta seems to be in a political dilemma as he seems to have been caught between a rock and a hard place as he contemplates his political future at ODM-Kenya.

It is rather obvious that he can not make it as the movements presidential candidate as the race there is largely between Kalonzo Musyoka and Raila Odinga with the latter heavily tipped to win the day.

On the other hand Uhuru's party is being wrestled from him by Kerio South MP Nicholas Biwott as a court case is still in progress to determine who are the bonafide officials of Kanu.

This puts Uhuru in a compromising position as he may find easily find himself with no party to contest the presidency with and may end up being offered a smaller position in the ODM party which he may find difficult to be content with considering that he vied for the presidency in 2002.

A witty politician who learns fast and is also able to make compromises for the common good of Kenyans, Uhuru cannot be written off so fast considering that he is probably the richest presidential aspirant and capable of self funding a presidential campaign.

In a country where money counts for much, Uhuru could find it difficult to convince those at ODM that he is the best bet for president but again he could go solo, form his own political outfit and finance his presidential campaign in his second bid for the top seat. This kind of move is ill adviced.

However sources close to Uhuru say that he is not very determined to contest the presidency this time round but wants to be part of the winning team that will wrestle power from president Kibaki in the polls expected to be held in December. He will then take the next 5 years to repackage himself for a successful bid for the presidency in 2012.

Uhuru has shown a lot of maturity and consistency ever since he lost his presidential bid in 2002 but the fact that he has fallen out with Moi for joining ODM has cost him plenty of Kanu supporters from Moi's Kalenjin community and the expansive Rift Valley which the retired president knows like the back of his hand. But again he has won many more from other parts of the country.

Kenyatta's youthfulness is also on his side considering that majority of the voters are youths who have been disillusioned by the Kibaki administration which seems to consider give priority to those above 70 years for plum jobs in the civil service and parastatals, something that has annoyed many Kenyan voters.

All said and done, Uhuru could make a formidable presidential candidate this time round unlike in 2002 when he was considered Moi's "baby". Writing him off would therefore be a big mistake.

General Elections 2007: Who Will Be Raila Odinga's Running Mate? Surprise, Surprise

In view of the strategy that Narc Kenya are bound to use against Raila Odinga, if he stands for president, the choice of his vice presidential running mate, will be critical.

It is the opinion of this writer that Raila Odinga is unstoppable and will win the ODM-Kenya nomination without breaking into a sweat. The real challenge he will face will however be beating the incumbent, President Mwai Kibaki. Narc-Kenya are widely expected to fan anti-Luo tribal sentiments promoted by the Kenyatta administation in the 60s and 70s.

Interestingly most analysts agree that only one candidate is best suited to serve Agwambo's political interests well and give him a higher chance of winning the presidency. And assuming that this particular person accepts to be his running mate, then they will be in a position to revive their own political career, which now seems to be in dire straits. That man's name is of course Uhuru Kenyatta.

Uhuru Kenyatta has been official leader of the opposition but is only beginning to cut his teeth as his own man after being under the shadow of retired President Moi for too long. However he has shown great promise and great potential.

There are those who believe that Uhuru will have minimal influence over the Kikuyu vote as a vice presidential running mate of Raila, a Luo. Still, there is no doubt that it is the best option open to Raila at the moment, more so because the number of youth voters across tribal lines in the country who will be quick to identify with Uhuru is huge.

In the past Uhuru and Agwambo have always worked very well together, as was evidenced during the New Constitution referendum in November 2005. Can they work together to get President Kibaki out of State House?

Ugandan self-proclaimed Prophetess Dies In Kenya

It was reported in the local press yesterday that the self-proclaimed Ugandan prophetess, Alice Lakwena died at a refugee camp in Northern Kenya after battling illness for a week and refusing conventional medical attention opting instead to treat herself with traditional medicine.

She will be remembered for waging a guerilla war in Uganda from 1986-87 where she convinced her followers to sprinkle some form of holy water she had in her possession that could allegedly stop bullets from inflicting injury on ones body.

Her gullible supporters believed her and died in their thousands as they confronted heavily armed government troops. Her resistance did not last long and she soon fled to Kenya to evade capture.

Having been married twice and divorced due to her inability to have children, Lakwena settled for a lonely life at the refugee camp and is said to have been sick for about a week prior to succumbing to a yet to be established ailment.

Born in 1956 in Uganda, Lakwena lived a generally quiet life before the mid eighties when she suddenly stopped talking and on recovering her speech, she claimed a spirit was inside her, which had instructed her to wage war against the government that she accused of being evil and unpopular.

Many considered her to be an insane zealot out to gain popularity and ascend to power by cheating gullible Ugandans that she was the anointed one and God had plans for her to rule the country and restore religious beliefs among the people.

Her supporters were mainly northern Ugandans who are known to be against any government where the president comes from the south. In this case, a southerner, Yoweri Museveni was president and it was easy to convince her northern kinsmen to take up arms against the government.

Mysterious Bank Robbery At Habib Bank Mombasa

Two days ago, armed gangsters walked into a bank in Mombasa and made away with about Shs 35 million in a mysterious robbery where it is yet to be established at what point exactly the money was stolen.

Some bank officials claim that the money was on transit and was stolen as it reached the bank while others say it was already in the bank and had never moved prior to the well-hatched robbery.

It is common sense that one cannot pull off a bank robbery without help from the inside and police are still pursuing leads and have arrested one of the guards on duty during the fateful raid.

Another inexplicable incident is the fact that the cctv cameras were not on when the robbery occurred and it is also yet to be established who switched them off or disabled them moments prior to the heist.

It could also be possible that not a single cent was stolen on that day and what could have happened is that an employee colluding with gangsters could have hidden the money inside the bank only for his accomplices to collect it the following day. This happened last year in a bank heist in Eldoret.

The amount said to have been stolen is also yet to be verified and TV footage showed managers of the Habib bank holding their heads in grief and bewilderment, as they could not explain how the money vanished.

One version says two well-dressed men entered the bank through the back door prior to the close of business while a third used the front door. They were allowed in by unsuspecting security guards.

One remains wondering why bank robberies still occur in Kenya where armed policemen guard these premises during opening hours and only leave after all monies have been secured. It is also highly likely that these gangsters are not only colluding with bank employees but also with the police. A pointer to this possibility is the flustered nature in which the police have acted over this particular robbery, issuing several statements to the press. In one of them the police claim that they even summoned bank managers at Habib to a meeting at the police station and expressed their concern over the lax security arrangements at the bank. Especially in view of the fact that they had received a tip-off of an impending bank robbery in Mombasa about a week or two before the heist actually took place.

Finally, one cannot help but wonder if this 35 million loot has gone into some politician's campaign war chest for the forthcoming general elections.

General Elections 2007: Can Anybody Be President Of Kenya?

The trend we have seen recently of non-politicians announcing their interest in the presidency is a sure sign that the field is going to be pretty crowded this time round. And it seems that most of the numbers will be made up of non-politicians and "nobodies."

Already it is clear that this has been received with lot of anger in most quarters. One reader left a comment in this blog saying; has the presidency now become for anybody?

I found that a rather strange statement but in a way it is not surprising because Kenyans have been convinced that the presidency is only for a few. Persons who stand for the presidency are supposed to be political giants, preferably very rich people. Anybody else who stands, it seems, will cause plenty of anger and who-do-they-think-they-are animosity from the public.

Kenyans will need to make up their minds about this issue because everybody agrees that we badly need a change of direction in the leadership of the country. This will obviously not come from the current political class who have blackmailed the country for too long now. It can only come from a new generation of leaders who have never been in politics before but who have the will to bring about the genuine change Kenyans want.

After the Watergate scandal of the early 70s that saw the resignation of President Richard Nixon, Americans voted in an outsider in President Jimmy Carter, a strong Baptist who confessed that he was a born again Christian. The message was clear, the nation was tired of dirty politics and the public badly wanted a clean up.

In Kenya, the nation is slowly being suffocated to death by corruption and we need a new beginning. To achieve that, we need to understand that only an outsider can have a fighting chance of getting the job done.

Can Kenya rise to be the sort of country where anybody can rise to be president irrespective of their tribe or family background as long as they can add value and bring badly required integrity to the office?

Over to you the Kenyan voters.
