Perils of Propping Partisan Police Force

If Major Hussein Ali ever thought he is the overall boss then he better stop living the lie and smell the coffee. Ali must be aware that AP Commandant Kinuthia Mbugua is an authority unto himself answerable to those calling shots.

Forget all those glossy proposals by Ali to modernize Kenya’s police force. Retired Judge Philip Ransley’s task force, just like the myriad commissions before him, is nothing but a stop-gap measure meant to fool Kenyans of an apparent motion with no intended movement.

Any member of the disciplined forces would readily tell you that Kinuthia’s contradiction of his boss Ali amounts to gross insubordination. But who cares, Kinuthia is on the right side of power. He knows Ali would never dare question him lest the police boss wants to kiss his post goodbye.

True Kinuthia said AP operations are crucial to security in every corner of the country. But wait a minute, between the regular police and AP who is better trained to cope with complex security challenges outside raiding changaa dens? No prizes for guessing because it is all politics, period.

Political errands
APs are symptoms of acute dearth of any progressive post-colonial reforms. They are relics of colonialism that the black boss inherited from the departing white boss with the exclusive purpose to subjugate his own people. No wonder the villagers aptly call them TP for TRIBAL POLICE.

Kinuthia Mbugua must have thought of himself being very intellectual in proposing more autonomous police divisions including border police. Nothing could be further from the truth in his quest to propose parallel command lines that will leave him more powerful at the expense of the wider good.

The world over, a country’s police force must have a central command with different specialized divisions answerable to one authority. But not in Kenya where modernization acquires a whole new meaning exclusively designed to serve parochial interests.

Just look back to 2007 and see how our APs are perfect vehicles to run political errands.

Tribal police
Only within our deceptive shores do you find such skewed logic spewed to package division as source of strength. All those grandstanding about merger of competing police units to foster effective service delivery are just clever tricks to keep us engaged as the looters scheme on their next prey at our expense.

Kenya’s gatekeepers will not allow tranaformatio of the police with commensurate power to operate independently. Doing that will deny the power to unleash official militia to further their narrow political agenda.

We have been warned of Armageddon come 2012 by both Judges Kriegler and Waki should there be no comprehensive reforms before then. Well, it is just about 1000 days to go. OLE WETU.

Constipation from Five-Course Humble Pie

You can fool Kenyans sometimes but not the world all the times, Bob Marley could have as well sung. Saitoti must be still smarting from an exclusive five-course sumptuous meal of humble pie.

What a colourful and dramatic overnight climbdown? The local bravado from the ruling class melted in Geneva and all the hitherto brickbats at Prof Alston speedily transformed into accolades. Last weak Prof Saitoti derided Alston as a shame to the title professor and not worth the reference and at Geneva he hailed Alston’s recommendations as CONSTRUCTIVE and USEFUL.

Patriots had egged Saitoti and Mutula to call Prof Alston bluff in defense of our so-called sovereignty. To them damn all the global village buzz, we are independent and capable of butchering our own. Well, not quite as the world will not sit back to see us self-destruct. Forget all the balderdash about two wrongs making a right ala Iraq and Pakistan.

Exotic lies
Living beautiful lies only succeeds in eternal embarrassment. Without the international community we would be having no country to pride ourselves with. We lost all the moral fibre after bastardizing a people’s democracy in 2007. Continuing to live in denial will only expand the circumference of your ego, period.

Make no mistake, militias must be stopped dead on their tracks. Mungiki's barbaric beheadings is as unacceptable as officially sanctioned police brutality and extra-judicial slayings. You cannot use Mungiki to fool the world in covering state sponsored anarchy. Rule of law is what separates from inhabitants of the jungle.

What an obtuse scale of embarrassment to have factions of the same government export their division abroad? Until the scoundrels come to terms with the naked fact that it is NOT-BUSINESS-AS-USUAL, we continue the bumpy circular rise into oblivion.

Damn consultation
We are so divided and at war with each other so much so that even a foreigner like Prof Alston refers to the fissures between the coalition partners so casually. But expect smart Kenyans to rationalize any rot thrown at them. We baptize impunity with all exotic names but the monster remains just that IMPUNITY as it mutates to claim us all.

Well, the paper patriots can threaten fire and brimstone of all shapes and colour. But Saitoti must have seen it coming in his climb down. The hitherto bravado and attack on the messenger while glossing over the message would have left his face neatly pasted with eggs.

Cheap Pride: Sh.1m a Minute Defending Kenya

Plastic patriotism and sovereignty must be our most expensive commodity in Kenya right now. Otherwise we would not be sending a fractious delegation of 30 joy riders who will only address the UN council on human rights in Geneva for only 5 minutes.

And the bill, well, Kenyans have no qualms coughing out 5m to pamper 5 hard working ministers with a busload of busybodies. Why not show the UN that we value our murderous ways and tell them to lay off our own festival of flesh and blood. If anything the police only killed Kenyans and no foreigners.

Our sovereignty is priceless and we will do anything ORTHODOX or otherwise to defend it. Prof Alston can wax legal with his Congo and Cuba reports but he must be told off by our own smiling but superlative legal minds.

Two wrongs only need a Kenyan mirror to make an obtuse right. Alston must hunt down Bush and Rumsfeld for desecrating Iraq before he turns his evil eye on peaceful Kenya. Woe unto you who derides cheap options that fly like blaming the messenger while conveniently glossing over the message.

Moral authority
Let Prof Kiarie Kunuthia show Alston what a real PhD means. Yes, the policemen killed on his watch but that was Kenyan blood they shed which is none of Alston’s business. Rule of the law is only quoted among the weak-hearted not progressive and industrious nations like Kenya.

We must rally behind our leaders in defending our national integrity and identity. Only scoundrels mouth platitudes laden with in patriotism. The 2007 elections may have been flawed but we retain an overflowing moral authority to defend Kenya.

Add that the unique maturity to sort our parallel government positions in Geneva and you get a picture of a country overwhelmed with patriotism and objectivity. Nani kama sisi? HAKUNA.

New Electoral Commission Boss Must Deliver

He has been hailed as the new non-partisan and smart head of our hitherto discredited electoral body. But can the city lawyer Ahmed Issack Hassan deliver given the politically polarized and poisoned Kenya?

Youth can be both a curse and a blessing. If being savvy and upright was to be derived from modern education and exposure then youthfulness would readily qualify as a blessing. But that may be a tall order given our HELL FOR LEATHER culture as a standard for success. We have seen youthful leaders speedily turn their age into a curse by competing against themselves to catch the older sloths ahead. They have an elastic appetite to grab as much as they can within the shortest time possible.

You cannot fail to hear the deafening sound of TRIBAL GONGS among the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC). The 39-year old Hassan must have been arrived at as a compromise with roots from the minority and marginalized part of Kenya. Even Ole Kaparo impressive record could not save him from being associated with PNU after failing to retain his speaker’s post with unanimous PNU support.

Curse of youth
All eyes are on Ahmed Hassan and fingers crossed he will banish the ghost of DECEPTION and FRAUD from our midst by exercising his mandate fearlessly and competently. All that hope is premised on the scoundrels in parliament having their acts together this time round and not introducing sideshows.

The consequences of any further procrastination are so grim to contemplate. But don’t hold your breathe yet on any matter where these scavengers hold both the yam and the knife.

Lawyers are often referred to as LEGAL scoundrels and you need look no further to confirm that. A look at their penchant to LEGALLY DEFEAT justice with eyes singularly trained on their fat bank accounts is enough. If confirmed, Ahmed Hassan must use his new post to help Kenyans reclaim their country from the jaws of murderous gate keepers. Will he bell the cat? Well, the jury is still out there on a leisurely tour.

The Kenya We Never Wanted, Don't Need

The talking shop is busting at the seams with scoundrels waxing philosophical with cheap advice they never practiced. Listening to the former president acting a sage with all prescription for ailing Kenya amounted to insulting the intelligence of all Kenyans.

First give credit to Lucifer for never disappointing. The present spate of mega corruption makes Uncle Dan look like a saint. And Boy the old man from Sacho was in good company. He must have been smiling from ear to ear seeing his political students almost outdoing him in re-inventing a wheel that is not even round in shape.

Moi’s analogy of the presidency being a bus driver having a plethora of pick pockets aboard is symptomatic of how simplistic our leadership view weighty matters of governance. And please save your breath in justify the same mediocrity with such platitudes as effective communication. This was a conference at KICC and not another barasa in Rongai.

The Kenya we want conference may have been convened with all the good intention but has unfortunately degenerated to the predictable talk shop Kenyans are unrivalled about. We are not kissing the bottom of political and economical pit because of lack of glossy and buzzword-filled white papers. We have them in plenty populating dusty government offices all over.

Until such a time we collectively and individually free ourselves from living the NATIONAL LIE of charades packaged as blue prints, we will enjoy the beauty of every floor on our way down oblivious of the hard pavement waiting to kiss our skull at the base. With no moral ground to point a finger at anybody the chief executive has no choice but to preside over the EXECUTIVE FRAUD in almost every ministry.

Coloured charade
The thinly-veiled cover of security in numbers has been met and it is crunch time for ministers to feather their nests with every fabric leaving Kenyans smarting and dying from famine. Fearful of the radically different next political dispensation, the fathers of corruption and Kenyan gate keepers are looting anything within our borders.

The Kenya we want conference is just another of those gimmicks designed to create impression of motion with no actual movement. We are stuck in a rut and at the mercy of the scavengers as they cycle carcass Kenya.

Failure and refusal to break from our ruinous past makes the likes of Moi chest-thumb while feeling prophetic and relevant with all solutions to problems they shamelessly created while in office. Looking for any cow still standing to milk, it will come as no surprise if the KICC conference won’t turn into another cash cow. If Balala, Ruto and Kiraitu did it successfully in their dockets why not spread the wealth around?

One Year Gone, Resilient Kenyans Still Caged

Time flies, so goes the adage. And more aptly so for the Kenyan people who exactly one year ago went to the polls only to reap unprecedented violence which almost shut the light completely. So one year to day what can we say is the principal trait among Kenyans that saw them escape from near-apocalypse? Resilience and the astuteness to get tough when the going gets rough.

The average Kenyan is one who knows his/her capabilities and often live his life according to his means. This obviously excludes the few scandalous ones who will do anything possible to acquire what they don’t deserve.

Give it to Kenyans for deriving enviable inspiration form adversity. The murderous mayhem during the post election violence (PEV) has seen many countries in Africa descend to points of no return to normalcy.

Add the present global economic meltdown to economic hardship resulting from PEV and you have a perfect picture of a Kenyan merely surviving and NOT living. The squeeze is evident everywhere and in all sectors of life and economy. Many Kenyans would ordinarily forfeit LUXURIES like sugar when prices shoot through the roof. But not when this has touched on the most basic survival staple food UNGA.

Sights of Kenyans boiling wild roots and keeping themselves alive with the threads of salt band water can only be symptomatic of a failed state in denial. Only self-denial can make anybody divorce Kenyans predicament from bad governance and LACK OF LEADERSHIP by example and from in front.

Self destruction
While true Kenyans make the best out of their present predicament, the ruling elite makes sure the gates are selfishly guarded as they scheme on their next move to draw the last drop from the same people paying for their luxuries. Kenyans remain a caged populace at the mercy of an OLD political elite whose every trail is littered with sickening corrupt deals.

All the deafening shouts here about change amounts to e(go)-revolution whose fate is already sealed. You cannot fault smart Kenyans to abuse every epoch thrown at them. The Obama moment is all talk with no commensurate walk. Any meaningful move towards effecting anything different will be promptly and brutally nipped in the bud thanks to archaic legislation which the EATING THIEVES are in no hurry to overhaul.

Guinea’s current predicament best exemplifies a country’s disillusionment with her despotic leaders. Ours is a country run, ruled and ruined by people exclusively concerned with protecting their turf and NEVER addressing issues critical to Kenyans. No wonder we remain in a constant election mood hardly a year after the previous polls.

In the meantime the ruling class perfects their skills at stealing and misallocating resources that would otherwise make a whole difference to all Kenyans. Their collective acts amounts to buying us cheap horrible deodorants that is better not sprayed on a dog. Speak of superlative acts of self-destruction.

Our Politicians Only Fooling Themselves

It is both funny and irresponsible to see MPs shouting fire in a crowded hall after absconding from heir primary role of making laws by absenting themselves from parliament when needed most. Now that they have been exposed, they are all shouting at Kibaki not to sign the passed Communication (Amendment) Bill into law. Leaves you wondering whom do these scoundrels think they are fooling apart from themselves.

Our MPs have institutionalized DECEPTION by lying through their oddly-spaced teeth. In their warped mindset they believe Kenyans will swallow all the balderdash they spew. Make no mistake, there is no love lost between the politicians and the media. And the truth is the media must be regulated. That said there is no need to re-invent the wheel and the practice world over on responsible journalism is stringent self-regulation and not our penchant to legalize raids headed by ALIENS from Armenia.

MPs’ behaviour is symptomatic of our shamelessness to lie and get away with it no matter the consequences, personal or national. Shaggy’s song IT WASN’T ME has never been more poetic. Now that the politicians are experiencing first hand signs of open revolt they are ruing their selfish antics to have us bend as they rape as some more. The spectre of food riots is one reality that change the political landscape forever.

But the MPs still don’t get it. The national mood is so FLUID no politician is safe from being heckled and shouted off stage. Even the time-tested contempt to egg the protesters on is meeting new challenges if nasty and violent scenes at Nyayo Stadium are any measure of dissatisfaction. Even Bush is not immune to SHOE MISSILE.

Food riots
Kenya and her leaders have taken deception to new levels. Only on these shores is lying on camera and denying it on the same screen acceptable and whitewashed with some hair splitting gimmicks. Mugabe must have outsmarted his Kenyan teachers is denying cholera outbreak and even claiming that the disease was exported from the west to remove him from power. That stunt must have sounded familiar as the ANGLO LEASING scandal that never was.

Minister Poghisio knew well when to strike the fatal blow on the media’s underbelly. With a partisan and fractious parliament he only needed a handful of COMPLIANT MPs and hurrah the bill is headed from presidential ascent. The media owners can scream themselves hoarse but Sam holds no hostage to sectarian interests. Damn the national interests, MPs have had the sweetest revenge served on the media.

The present standoff provides the best platform to launch campaign for TRUE REFORMS. But trust such a resolve to be a casualty of short-term political memory that will soon see demonstrations take ETHNIC SLOGANS. But the good news MAY be that finally the civic society is finally waking from their slumber after their fire was extinguished by embedding them in government.

The Reign of Armed and Uniformed Impunity

As the Waki flame continue to gather more powerful wind, Kenyans are conveniently focused in discussing the post-election violence without pausing to ask the tough and simple question of the root cause. Well, talk is cheap and weak minds are prone to bandy epithets at each other oblivious of the consequences.

Give Kenyans a new constitution that entrenches institutionalized governance and nobody will care a whiff about the tenant at State House. What is more, the respected address will no longer be reduced to a rendezvous for militia planning to murder Kenyans. But that will remain a coloured wish given the aging scoundrels masquerading as our leaders. Last year’s bungled elections only provided the spark that ignited a hitherto simmering time bomb.

The impunity monster that is currently mauling Kenya was conceived by Kenyatta, weaned by Moi and married off to Kibaki. Between these three devils lies two communities who have the highest political stakes and numerous scores to settle. Forget about the Luos, Luhyas and Kambas (not to disparage other 30+ Kenyan tribes). These are three only serve the purpose of completing the quest equation to join to the club. The hatred and occasional embrace accorded to these later three are mostly premised on the Machiavellian doctrine of doing all it takes to demonize a competitor or co-opt as a ladder to the top.

The list in the Wakis’ envelope and the KNHRC original (not the THIRD version) reads likes who is who among the Kikuyus and Kalenjins. It is no coincidence that Jomo Junior tops the list. He has plenty at stake personally and communally and above all else the family name to both protect and expand. And Ruto? Well, the Kikuyus will drop his name in their day time dreams in the belief (real or perceived) that he stand between them and political supremacy.

As much as we would wish to bandage the festering wound, LAND remains the root cause of all the souring political temperatures. Kenyatta grabbed all the prime chunks of Kenya to his fill creating the Kikuyu Diaspora mainly in the rift Valley. Owing to his own insecurity, Moi made unchallenged political supremacy his principal objective for 24 years.

When naive Kenyans thought they had banished personalized selfish rule to hell in 2002 they had no glue that Kibaki had his own unfinished business and dream to fill. Unfortunately that dream was at variance with his voters save for his few supplicants. The rest as they say is history whose text we are painfully living now.

Postponing Armageddon
Times have changed and the Kalenjins will not buy the naive crap of willing-buyer-willing-seller. The superiority complex only helps in boiling the rage. Having both tasted personalized power, the Kikuyus and Kalenjins are simply playing political checkmates. Back to the trenches they will both do anything to reclaim or retain it power. And no price is big enough to pay in that pursuit.

The Kalenjins are (rightly or wrongly) bitter with Kibaki’s orchestrated resolve to cut them to size during his first term as president. On the other hand the Kikuyus are cursing in arrears Moi’s determination to incinerate their hitherto political and economic advantage.

It may sound like a cliche but the truth is that after last years bungled elections Kenya will never be the same again, NEVER. Kibaki’s penchant to resort to the tried and tested political games dolled in stereotypes became his Achilles heels when he underestimated the resolve of Kenyans who know what they want and they are determined to get it at whatever price. The era of using power to selectively reward and punish is gone forever and the sooner the dinosaurs knew that the better.

No amount of uniformed and armed impunity will kill the will of a population determined to regain their right to choose the way they are governed. Only a new constitution reflecting institutionalized governance will save us from the imminent jaws of apocalypse.All else amounts to pretence whose only success is guaranteed in postponing the inevitable.

No wonder Justice Waki's wisdom informed him to ignore the sovereignty balderdash by handing over the secret envelope to Kofi Anna. Message: you can run but not hide.

A Belated Discovery of Deceitful and Dishonest Leadership...Oh My!!!

Six Years on..........PNU allies finally see the true colour of FRAUD. And that is not a friendly gesture from the Iron Lady, is it?

The so-called PNU allies of President Kibaki have been screaming themselves hoarse after belately discovering that their very own PNU which was supposedly and strictly a party of parties (read statehouse vehicle), has recently been carjacked (literally) by a not so hooded group of politicians led by Kibaki himself and supported by loyalists Nyamwea, Wekesa, Thuo, Mugo and the whole lot of them. (The recently enacted political parties act 2008 does not allow for corporate membership in political parties.)

The statement read by Karua’s sidekick Danson Mungatana said in part: "The PNU fraternity has a history of not respecting any agreements or MoUs like the 2002 Narc and now the failed 2007 PNU affiliate parties agreement,” It goes without saying, Kibaki is officially the only MP elected on a PNU ticket and therefore the words "PNU fraternity" are a direct reference to Kibaki himself! Where were the Mungatanas of this world when LDP were crying foul in 2003?

Former PNU Affiliate parties are upset that the president is reneging on his pre-election promise not to convert PNU into a fully fledged political party and to respect the indepence of the affiliates. The president has been declared PNU party leader and he has also gone ahead and promised grassroot elections. As expected, this has alarmed FORD-K, DP, NARC-K and SAFINA who retorted with the now familiar line "......our support in parliament should not be taken for granted.” Why should Kibaki worry about parliament? He has a diligent Prime Minister who is in charge there, right? Curiously though, only a faction of KANU led by Uhuru Kenyatta are steadfast in their support for the actions of President Kibaki.

By turning PNU into a political party, Kombo, Karua and Munyao have been left holding on to their skeleton parties since the majority of their own membership are opting to jump on to the PNU boat. But then, KKM are not alone. In the last elections, many politicians sacrificed their individual political careers the minute they took up "PNU fraternity" campaigns into their own localities. Nyachae, Tuju, Karume, Kombo, Munyao, Kibwana, Dzoro – to name but a few - all put their political lives on the line for PNU fraternity, but in the end, they were all discarded without second thought! Martha Karua gallantly defended a stolen election and was lead negotiator for the "PNU fraternity" in securing the presidency...but all indications are that she is now serving her last weeks as Justice & Constitutional Affairs Minister and soon after the forthcoming by-elections she may, at worst, find herself on the back bench and without any MPs supporting her NARC-Kenya bid for presidency. And this will be without second thought from the appointing authority.

In retrospect, one sad experience was that of former Kibwezi MP Kalembe Ndile who was last year co-opted into the "PNU fraternity" presidential campaign team only to end up losing his parliamentary seat courtesy of the ODM-K wave. And to rub it in, "PNU fraternity" immediately entered into – you guessed it – another MOU with ODM-K who were hitherto fierce opponents of the "PNU fraternity". As if this was not enough, PNU failed to nominate Kalembe to parliament or even offer him a state appointment. Kalembe then made an attempt to be re-elected to parliament through the Embakasi by-elections, but even then, PNU fraternity had their own ideas in supporting Fedinand Waititu. Thank God, Kalembe has learnt his lesson, and it is a matter of time befroe Judas Iscariot Kalonzo Musyoka experiences his at the hands of “PNU fraternity.” This also conveniently gives Madame Pauline Musyoka a while to play fake philanthropist with funds sourced from state coffers on tax payer account!

In the meantime, it is gratifying that the party in whose hands millions of Kenyans have placed their hopes – ODM – having learnt from the bitter experience of the 2003 NARC fraud, have made it impossible for the “PNU fraternity” to defraud us a second time and ensured that all agreements made were made legally binding through minor constitutional amendments.

Cheering Shameful Leadership from the Rear

Wentangula's goofs over violence in South Africa and AU mediator Adeneji were apt examples of poor leadership and disastrous diplomacy. He can choose the cheap Kenyan politician escape of denial and claiming to have been misquoted BUT CAMERAS DON'T LIE. But then this Kenya were DECEPTION and living in serial self denial are revered virtues.

Just like lies you have to use fraud and deception to prop up fraudulent leadership. As a nation we have taken deception to new levels. We shamelessly rush to rally behind our GOOFING and FRAUDULENT tribesmen at the slightest criticism even when caught red handed napping on the job. Reasoning by DISPLACEMENT is our forte during such missions. We readily sanitize their ROTTING leadership using cheap comparison with their political rivals. That is why 5 years of Kibaki's misrule and rape is less ruinous compared to Moi's 24.

True leadership is measured by the amount of conviction and effort a leader puts forward to confront a challenge and not how many years you compare yourself with an IMBECILE. Deflection from the truth never makes the TRUTH change its colour nor shade. Wetangula's diplomatic goof is symptomatic of the present leadership INCOMPETENCE. Remove Annan and Adeneji (his successor) and there would be no country called Kenya to talk about in the first place. Well, haters of the truth will jump to cheap justification with buzzwords like LETS MOVE ON. And there lies DECEPTION and FRAUD extraordinary - bandaging the cancer and wishing it away. We must be our own worst enemies.

Led by the tail
We must call our scoundrels bluff. Until we discard TRIBAL lenses and look truth in face and squarely face to its demands we are unwittingly fooling ourselves that HEALING and PROSPERITY can be built without hard choices. We must replace DECEPTION with the useful HONESTY. There are no two ways about this. There has never been and it won't be. Faint hearts never won any battle leave alone war. Opting for cheap and quick fixes is our national bane. Indulge and soothe your TRIBAL ego if you must but you are only fooling yourself in expecting miracles out of the indulgence. Our present leaders are a disgrace at best and a disaster at worst. Bring them on.

Master of Pretence and Betrayal

The Grand Coalition Government is one political animal that is too big for its nest. The truth is that the PNU-ODM marriage of convenience ended immediately it was consummated. Kibaki had his face on the pact but his heart and intentions still lie elsewhere despite spirited pronouncements to the contrary. He was dragged into the pact by both international and local pressure.

Kenya is in EXTRAORDINARY state which needs EXTRAORDINARY leadership which Kibaki cannot offer. His apologists still shamelessly deride protesters who forced the THIEF to relent as uncivilized. Well, only myopia can sanitize fidelity to a skewed law. Kenyans are ahead of the THIEVES and PNU’s call to turn to the courts was a script delivered straight from political scoundrels.

Fraudulent company
Kibaki’s fraudulent mantra has loyal students in Mugabe and the junta in Burma. These are dinosaurs whose political relevance starts and ends with their marionette nature. Mugabe the independence hero was to Zimbabweans what Kibaki was to Kenyans in 2002. As soon as Kenyans delivered Kibaki to State House after two unsuccessful bids before, he embarked on unparalleled mission to TRIBALIZE Kenya than never seen before.

So here we are a country crying for leadership but our tears is being mocked by a scoundrel ruling by proxy and cronies. Well, sitting on a fraudulent pedestal denies you any trace of moral authority to govern. And no CEO leaves his subordinates to run the show downhill without lifting a finger. It is even worse when the very subordinates are privy to your soft underbelly. Only a miracle can have people pulling in different directions move in the same direction.

Kibaki's bane is traceable to his archaic mindset moulded in nostalgia of the 1950s. We belong to different generation and IMPUNITY and utter contempt of Kenyatta's time will be resisted with all the might and sweat. Kenyans demonstrated their might on December 27 last year only for the THIEF-IN-CHIEF to trash their democratic and birth right with all the bravado and impunity by stealing elections. Well, gloating you can but the time to account for collective and individual misdeeds is nigh. It is only a matter of when and not if.

Kivuitu’s ECK All Set to Conduct By-Elections

The ECK has finally announced that by-elections will be conducted in five constituencies and 55 wards civic wards on June 11th 2008. The constituencies are: Ainamoi, Emuhaya, Embakasi, Wajir East and Kilgoris.

No, no, you’re not imagining things. Oh yes, the one and only Samuel Kivuitu, Kihara Muttu, Muturi Kigano and the rest of the crowd, are all set to supervise elections in June, just six months after bungling the general elections!

With the country deeply divided, upwards of 1500 Kenyans dead; more than half a million others living as refugees in their own country and the constitution having had to be amended so as to accommodate a power sharing deal, one would imagine that the individuals responsible for this unfortunate turn of events would be sitting at a remand jail awaiting to be taken to court to face criminal negligence charges. And how WRONG one would be.

Sure, there are some positive things that have arisen out of Kivuitu’s massive cock-up, but the negative aspects far outweigh them. The 2007 election failure impacted on many lives, affected businesses, disrupted education and agriculture plus much more, not just in Kenya, but throughout the Eastern African region. Yet, the clumsy and inept ECK commissioners who are 100% responsible for this tragedy still sit pretty in their red carpet aircon offices enjoying hefty emoluments on tax payer account. All this while thousands of Kenyans mourn their dead relatives and many others sleep in rain soaked tents. What an insult!

Out of step with the real world

Admittedly, there is urgent need for constituencies without MPs to get representation in parliament. But should current ECK commissioners, now hiding behind constitutional security of tenure, be allowed to oversee by-elections, let alone hold public offices? Personally, recalling events at KICC in December 2007 and Kivuitu’s arrogant attitude ever since, I wouldn’t trust any of those ECK commissioners to serve as members of a village borehole committee.

Flashback: Towards the doomsday

It would seem that Kivuitu’s fate and that of his fellow commissioners lie in the hands of Mwai Kibaki as president. The ECK is governed by Chapter 41 of the Constitution of Kenya which inter-alia says: “....... 5) A member of the Commission may be removed from office only for inability to exercise the functions of his office (whether arising from infirmity of body or mind or from any other cause) or for misbehavior, and shall not be so removed except in accordance with this section.
(6) A member of the Commission shall be removed from office by the President if the question of his removal from office has been referred to a tribunal appointed under subsection (7) and the tribunal has recommended to the President that he ought to be removed from office for inability as aforesaid or for misbehavior.
(7) If the President considers that the question of removing a member of the Commission under this section ought to be investigated, then—
(a) the President shall appoint a tribunal, which shall consist of a chairman and four other members selected by the President........” The big question is whether the president will listen to the voices of reason and appoint the tribunal. Highly unlikely!

The Independent Review Commission headed by Justice Johann Kriegler set up to investigate general elections fiasco will hold countrywide meetings to gather evidence and has given interest groups up to 16th May to submit their written memoranda.

The influential Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Chairman, Mr Maina Kiai, has called for the Kenya Government to seek assistance from the United Nations Electoral Assistance Division (UNEAD) to oversee the by-elections. Maina reckons that the fact that there is an official inquiry into the conduct of the ECK is enough reason to ask for international assistance. He adds that the ECK lost credibility and integrity to conduct other elections after they messed up last year's polls.

On their part, the Secretary General of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya Sheikh Mohammed Dor has said that the Government ought to abolish the ECK and create a new representative commission so as to ensure free and fair elections.

Safina Party Leader and former Kikuyu MP Mr Paul Muite has also called for the reconstitution of the ECK before the June by-elections. Muite said it would be unacceptable for the ECK as currently constituted to run the repeat polls. "A majority of the commissioners are partisan, having being handpicked by one side of the political divide. Elections are like justice - they must not only be free and fair, but they must also be perceived to have been free and fair," said Muite. Instead, he urged for "an urgent constitutional amendment" to be fast-tracked in Parliament to put in place a professional ECK to conduct all future elections. Muite is foreseeing violent protests ahead citing Embakasi constituency which has the potential to easily become a flashpoint constituency to trigger off fresh violence if the outcome of the repeat polls was disputed.

It might be recalled that the European Union (EU), the Commonwealth and the African Union election observers all condemned the ECK saying that it failed to meet "international standards of transparency in key areas of its mandate".

All the international observer reports recommended that ECK be completely overhauled to build confidence in its independence and professionalism and also to ensure that it is credible, transparent and impartial.

I can only see more trouble for this country if the ECK, as currently constituted, goes ahead to oversee the by-elections in June.

It now appears that the deep divisions regarding the powers of the proposed Prime Minister's post have driven the weary mediation team apart and in effect left very little hopes for a political deal between ODM and PNU anytime soon.

No deal? Kenyans brace for the worst!

By the time the talks adjourned late Friday evening, hopes for a deal announcement quickly evaporated when neither Annan nor his spokesperson showed up at the press briefing. Media houses who have set up permanent camps (complete with OB vans and satellite) at Serena Hotel were disppointed when Annan failed to show up. The press have been forced to work in shifts so as to keep a 24 hour vigil at the five star hotel where the talks are taking place.

An optimistic and upbeat Annan last addressed a press conference accompanied by US secretary of state Condi Rice a couple of days ago. It looks like the agreement that was apparently 'signed' by the warring parties in Kilanguni lodge last Friday is already being disregarded. How is Annan taking all this?

To add insult to injury, this morning, the ODM captain Raila Odinga (pictured) skipped an appointment with Jean Ping, the new chairman of the African Union (executive) Commission. That was after the PNU team needlessly kept Kofi Annan, his eminent persons panel and the ODM team waiting for five hours after taking an early break (buying time) yesterday to attend, sic, the funeral of the man who set-up the infamous Nyayo House torture chambers and the brainchild behind Kenya's biggest scam of all time - Goldenberg International. That man was known as James Kanyotu.

Jean Ping was met by Uhuru Kenyatta on arrival in Nairobi's JKI Airport and carefully shepherded to Kalonzo Musyoka's Harambee House office yesterday before meeting Mwai Kibai this morning. While the AU have not officially endorsed the PNU government, their behavior and amateurish actions clearly show which side they fall on. During Mr. Ping's visit, ODM were kept out of the picture as was Annan and his team. Ironically, Annan is in Kenya under the AU auspices. Perhaps this tightly and remote-controlled itinerary may have probably upset the ODM and made them send a junior team to meet Jean Ping.

Although Raila was reportedly flown to Nigeria on chartered jet, no official in Abuja nor Lagos can confirm his presence in Nairaland. The Nigerian foreign affairs minister is not aware of Raila's visit. In a nutshell, Raila's whereabouts - Kenya's de facto president - is publicly unknown. What is going on?

Both PNU and ODM teams reportedly emerged from Serena Hotel late Friday evening saying that they were giving each other the weekend for consultations and would resume talks on Monday. Kofi Annan was nowhere to be seen.

Meanwhile, state intimidation moved to another level when ODM pointman in Uasin Gishu Jackson Kibor spent the second night in police custody after police announced they would arraign him in court on murder charges. Family, doctor and lawyers have been barred from seeing the 72 year-old diabetic Kibor. This afternoon, Kibor was subject of a heated argument between ODM legislators and journalists who had gone to cover the ODM Parliamentary Group meeting.

ODM Works Hard To Prevent Kaparo's 4th Term As SNO

After being 'awarded' presidential votes by Samuel Kivuitu, President Kibaki through his PNU party and affiliates are due to make another 'award' to Mr. Francis Ole Kaparo, as Kenya's 'permanent' Speaker of the National Assembly (SNO).

Information reaching this blogger indicates that the the vote count for the race for the speakers seat 'is already out in the open', in the same style and manner as when Kibaki was sworn-in at the presidential polls whereby Kivuitu irregularly declared him president prematurely in a secluded room somewhere in KBC studios. Indeed, the leaked SNO result shows a very close contest - much closer than the presidential polls, with less than 5 individuals separating the contestants.

Although the young Emuhaya MP Kenneth Marende would have been a perfect replacement for the older Francis Kaparo, the power of the incumbency is just too strong for Marende's backers. Perhaps Njoki Ndun'gu would have been an agreeable compromise candidate for both PNU and ODM even if only for the history of parliament as the first woman MP to be elected into the speakers seat. Despite pressure from PNU to drop her bid in favour of Kaparo, Njoki says she is in the race till the end.

In the course of this past week, well known PNU foot soldiers have been busy buying the votes from MPs elect who are only too willing to sell to the highest bidders after a strenuous and expensive campaign period. Some of the foot soldiers have been busy trying to infiltrate the ODM camp with promises of cash and cabinet appointments. With a total of 207 (206 minus the president himself) MPs already elected into the 10th parliament, it will be a very close race, because ODM has 99 MPs plus 3 others from NARC. Assuming all the rest will vote with PNU it is not hard to take a wild guess. Some ODM MPs are rumoured to have already crossed over either by coercion or compromise. It is unclear which ODM MPs have already 'defected' even before being sworn-in and it is also unclear which MPs Njoki has convinced to vote for her.

Unless ODM/NARC changes the tide and infiltrates the PNU camp tonight, it is almost a foregone conclusion that Kaparo will start his record 4th term tomorrow by swearing-in MPs and continuing to play to the whims of the executive for the foreseeable future.

ODM Pentagon Now Target of an Assassination Plot

It is now emerging the a leading member of the ODM pentagon consisting of Raila, Ruto, Ngilu, Nyagah and Mudavadi is target of an assassination plot hatched by political opponents. God forbid!

Word reaching this blogger indicates that this threat is being assessed by the ODM security team that is headed by former police comish Edwin Nyaseda. Already, ODM is said to have identified at least two active moles that have been planted at Pentagon House, where most of the activities of the party are being co-ordinated from since the electoral process was sabotaged by ECK Chairman. Anyone watching the movement of the pentagon members will not have failed to notice the increased security around them. Other moles are said to be working as insiders at the party secretariat near Yaya Center and are responsible for the chaotic party nomination exercise prior to the elections.

The plotters feel that it is easier to manage the aftermath of an assassination than handle the political crisis currently unfolding in the country. It seems obvious that a plot to eliminate a member(s) of the pentagon would have far reaching implications on Kenya's political landscape if it is actually committed. It seems some powerful cartels after having failed to infiltrate the pentagon and are now considering murder as a solution to the post election crisis which was incidentally caused by the same cartel that arm-twisted the Kivuiti into agreeing to declaring fraudulent election results. Kenyan security forces - albeit with some little foreign help - have so far proven (sic) that they can handle large scale civil unrest that is sure to follow should such an assassination take place.

This blogger has deliberately failed to mention names/tribes of the moles and/or their political sponsors but knowing that this blog is read widely by all politicians, informers are advised to quickly make their bosses aware that they evil plans have already been exposed and their moles are being closely watched.

PNU's Dirty Games

As the ODM prepares a comprehensive report on election malpractices and presidential vote count escalation in favour of Kibaki, media got hold of this hand written ballot paper summary for the Langa Langa polling station in Nakuru Town constituency.

It is obvious even to most illiterate eye, that "0" was added by Kibaki supporters to inflate his vote from 79 to 790 and thus earn him an extra seven hundred dishonest votes. Obviously, with these sort of mischievious games, PNU's Kinyanjui Lee Maiyani emerged the winner.

This reminds me the Kisauni by-elections petition case which has been proven several times over was stolen by Anania Mwaboza from LDP's Ali Hassan Joho. Another example is the Magarini by-elections a few months ago which were a BIG FRAUD. Where is Hon Kombe today?

Because of this open fraud the country continues to burn and innocent Kenyans continue to die.

Why Not Make Every Constituency a District?

Freebies, domonomics and miracles aptly defines the three leading presidential candidates. The last few weeks have witnessed Kenyans subjected to political theatre of the absurd. Dolling of freebies by Kibaki leaves one wondering what the role of an administrative district is.

Kibaki's apologists will shamelessly recycle the tired and hollow line that his plastic gifts are meant to bring services closer to people. Yes cheap talk as services but expensive budgetary implementation are neat political gimmicks that are eventually very costly.

Make no mistake. Kibaki is no fool. He is cleverly stealing political thunder from his nemesis by unofficially implementing the raw version of majimbo albeit without spelling the same. The latent point in making every shopping centre a district is to leave majimbo enthusiasts with a distaste for PNU have second thoughts asking in its wake what else to scrap from ODM now that they are home and dry before elections with our district.

And if Kibaki's gimmicks make headlines then he stands on the podium of deceit hand in hand with all his other competitors who in the same breath shamelessly promise Kenyans a piece of the moon while shepherding them collectively to hell.

I cannot stop wringing my hands waiting for Thursday to put all this madness behind me at least for the next five years. Meanwhile in the political free fall we are happily enjoying the beauty of every floor oblivious of the hard pavement waiting below to crack our skulls. The Mt. Kenya Kibaki Succession Plan: Secret Meetings Held to Dupe and Bribe

Uhuru Kenyatta's double-speak about his ambition to become Kenya's President after Kibaki is no surprise. Uhuru Kenyatta is the chosen heir in an elaborate plan by Mt. Kenya politicians to ensure that the Presidency stays with the community beyond 2022. A group of Mt. Kenya politicians have planned how Uhuru Kenyatta will take over the Presidency in 2012 whether Kibaki wins another term or not in December 2007.

Before PNU was formed, Kibaki had held a series of secret meetings with top leaders from Central Province to chart the way forward for the future of the Kikuyu Community after 2007. The meetings started as early as April this year when the Kibaki men realized that he had no credible party that could see him get re-elected. Purely Mt. Kenya outfits Narc-Kenya and DP were at the time pressuring him to adopt their ticket amid dissent from non-Kikuyu ministers.

Notably, while the politicians were of the impression that Kibaki should join either of the two Mt. Kenya parties, Kibaki's golfing baddies now entrenched in government, parastatals and in Mt. Kenya owned TransCentury share-trading and acquisition company were busy working on a formula that would see Kibaki re-elected at the same time ensuring that the presidency remains with the Kikuyu beyond 2012.

Handwritten minutes of meetings show that the planners - the athuri group are so secret that even members of the Ameru and Aembu are not included. The argument is that these communities will obviously support a Kikuyu come 2012 because they have no option. To this end, it was agreed that Kiraitu Murungi and David Mwiraria be returned to the cabinet to ensure "they are for ever grateful" and to win the loyalty of the Ameru. It came as no surprise that it was Lucy Kibaki who made hints of their return which was effected speedily. Minutes show the group nicknamed itself "athuri".

About the same time, the athuri secretive group comprising of Kibaki as chairman, Njenga Karume and John Michuki as alternate chairmen, Mary Wambui, Jimmy Kibaki, Judy Kibaki, Eddy Njoroge, George Muhoho, Stanley Murage, Nat Kangethe, Bishops Arthur Gitonga and George Gathii, and Cyrus Gituai (PS OP) were holding meetings with the retired president Moi's group of Nicholas Biwott, Ezekiel Bargetuny, Gideon Moi, Sila Yego and Uhuru to layout the post-Kibaki succession plan.

Ready to play ball as usual were Luhya leaders in the then GNU. A plot was hatched to have Ford-Kenya take the lead in the formation of PNU thereby hide the true intention of the Mt. Kenya boys. In one meeting it was agreed that Musikari Kombo was more pliable, weak and dumb enough to be used. That Kombo was weak on his Western Province turf after invasion by ODM was cited as reason enough for him to play errand boy without question. "Nyamu eno ahoyaga matigio. Reke tomuhe ihindi" (Roughly translated: this animal worships leftovers. Let's give him a bone to chew), Kibaki is said of Kombo in reference to empty departments given to Kombo's cronies after he threw a tantrum following a post-referendum new cabinet in 2005.

Not surprisingly, in a recent tour of Western Province, Kibaki told Kombo and company including Moody Awori that he will include him in his cabinet. It was strange given that the president found it necessary to make this promise when all parties under PNU should automatically be in Cabinet after elections. Was this an attempt to stem some disquiet regarding the president's mean trick of short-changing partners? Was this reassurance to Kombo and meant to appease Luhya voters who have lost faith and trust that Kibaki, an introverted tribalist, can never honour a promise? Problem is, there is no party Kombo can use to negotiate for positions in the post-elections cabinet. This is because Ford-Kenya has been swallowed by PNU and is fielding no candidates!

Earlier, in the athuri meeting, it was also argued that Kombo's never-ending ambition to be "given" the vice presidency was a great enticement to have him play blind ball. His desperation for money was also used fully. No less a person than his nemesis Soita Shitanda of Malava has accused Kombo of being in PNU for the money. It is instructive that while all parties under PNU have their own candidates, only Ford-Kenya failed to field a single candidate of its own. The ECK register shows that all Former Ford-Kenya MPs in Bungoma, including Kombo are running on PNU. It means that Ford-Kenya is finally dead!

That's how the equally quick-to-please Noah Wekesa was recruited to lead a façade of forming PNU while the backroom Muthaiga boys worked on a parallel plan. It is notable that immediately Wekesa thought he had clinched it with PANU, the Mt. Kenya boys too k it over renamed it PNU and got busy swallowing all the other parties other than Kanu. Wekesa's cries of betrayal were to no avail. His boss Kombo, as usual was more interested in the cash handouts that comes with "horse trading" than protecting his sidekick or the interests of Ford-Kenya.

Back to the issue of the Kibaki succession, Uhuru finally agreed to join the Kibaki team but was given enough concessions as the heir-in-waiting:

First, Kanu would field independent candidates but who will be funded by PNU to ensure Kanu becomes strong since PNU would disintegrate by 2009 and a win or lose by Kibaki would have prepared Uhuru to inherit the Mt. Kenya vote.

Second, the bad blood between Uhuru and Moi over his association with ODM would be cleansed by the appointment as ministers of Gideon Moi, Nick Salat, Paul Sang and Nicholas Biwott in a Kibaki government. As it were only Paul Sang got the appointment earlier than after the elections. These appointment promises remain intact for after 2008 and are the reason Moi and company are campaigning hard for Kibaki in Rift Valley.

Third, through such association with Moi's boys and should Kibaki lose, Kanu would have re-established a foothold in Central Kenya and the Rift Valley, and with Moi's support in the Rift Valley, Uhuru will be president and Gideon Moi the vice in 2012.

When it came to other communities and other competitors, the athuri prevailed upon Kibaki to abandon the ambitions of Awori, Kombo, Kituyi, Saitoti, Martha Karua and Kirwa as inconsequential. This was after Kibaki was presented with secret research evidence from Mutahi Ngunyi, who has since moved to State House. Mutahi reported that other than Karua, the pretenders to the throne would all loose their seats in the 2007 elections. Chipped in Karume in reference to Karua "Mwari wa muthambia kioro afataire kuihura/kuithambia mbere...." (Roughly translated: The daughter of a toilet cleaner should wipe herself first! - a derogatory reference to Kirinyaga people whom mainstream Kikuyu refer to as toilet cleaners. The slur was acquired in colonial times when the Kirinyaga dominated the Nairobi City Council cleansing department).

As for Saitoti, it was felt that he was an outsider who carried too much baggage from the Goldenberg scam. He was seen to be "disloyal" in his earlier announcement that he would vie against Kibaki in this year's elections. The Kiambu Muranga axis of the athuri felt that Saitoti
ambitions for 2012 did not augur well for Uhuru. Michuki reported he had met Moi who has no time for his former VP, and that consideration of Saitoti would antagonize Moi whom Saitoti blamed for the Goldenberg theft.

To placate Moi, the athuri minutes report to Kibaki refers to "Gacamia/Gathakaria ga gukenia Moi" (Roughly translated: or a sweetener to appease Mzee Moi). It has now emerged that the sweet for Moi is a plot to ensure Saitioti looses the Kajiado North parliamentary seat. It is with this hindsight the Saitoti is under siege from DP's Lee Kinyanjui and blames "someone" in PNU. And Saitoti is very uncomfortable at the moment with the Kibaki Group even going as far as claiming that PNU wants him to loose the Kajiado North seat. These fears are well founded as the athuri feel that Saitoti is an outsider in Central Province and therefore not the best bet for the Presidency even after Kibaki.

Part of their minutes show the athuri discussed ways of dealing with the imminent fallout with other communities in 2012. The Luhya as a community are dismissed as peaceful and would be grateful for anything. Kombo despite promises was ruled out as a running mate. Moody's influence in Western Province was found lacking and Kombo, Kituyi and Wekesa were seen
to have succumbed to the ODM wave in the Province. "Manegere Mathagu ma guku na nimakurota kuubuka", (Roughly translated: Give them some chicken wings and they will dream of flying), Michuki is quoted dismissing any worries about Luhya support for Kibaki.

The meeting thus decided that "Gutuma atongoria abaluhya mecirie nimakugia ufata munene kuri thirikari Kibaki ashinda" (Roughly translated: to give the Luhya leaders the impression that they will be a major part of Kibaki's government if he wins). The emphasis was that these leaders should be made to work for Kibaki since their worth as vote-getters had diminished. This seems to be the "decoy" assurance Kibaki was promising on his recent tour.

When PNU was taken over, it was decided that Kibaki give other parties like Ford-Kenya and Ford-People, the illusion that they are part of PNU. Only Kombo took this bait and Ford-K is the only party that is headed to oblivion in the PNU. Secretly, Kikuyu parties like Safina, Narc-Kenya and DP were to be allowed to "revolt" and field candidates in their own names
in the nominations. Kombo is being made to believe that he is a co-owner of PNU and therefore a future VP. However, in a telling game of juggling the liver ala Michuki, the athuri have argued that after elections, Ford-Kenya would be dead. The plot was to ensure Kombo got money to stand on PNU and let Ford-Kenya die. It is interesting that the ECK lists Kombo and his Bungoma cohorts as all standing on PNU!

Hence, the Kibaki athuri hatched a plot to keep all the non-Kikuyu members of PNU hopeful. However, the confidential athuri minutes show that after the elections and in case Kibaki wins, he will form an alliance with Kalonzo Musyoka as VP because Kibaki will only have Kikuyu MPs. The athuri also argue that most other provinces are already lost to ODM and there will be no need to reward "aragoli" (Mt. Kenya name for the Luhya) after they reject Kibaki.

According to Mutahi Ngunyi's brief, to boost turnout, all Kibaki needs to do is ensure large turnouts in Central where the "unattached voter" will be helped to vote. This is reference to double registration occasioned by national IDS numbers being shared by several voters and those also of dead voters given to other people. It is quite alarming that most cases termed
"double registration" by the ECK are actually ID numbers of other voters outside Mt. Kenya and the dead ones now given Kikuyu names and allocated voters cards. The rigging ploy is that while the original holder of the legitimate ID number will be denied voting because of double registration, the imposter in Central Kenya will have voted.

While analyzing the situation in Rift Valley, the athuri considered the consequences of naming Kipruto Kirwa as Kibaki's running mate, an idea they said originated from a meeting former President Daniel Arap Moi had held with Narc-Kenya chairman Raphael Tuju in Nakuru in October. Moi had argued that promising Kirwa a running mate position to Kibaki (without intending to make him VP) would clip the ODM wave in Rift Valley. This, it is explained, would make Kalenjins vote for Kibaki since former Eldoret North MP William Ruto who is a member of the powerful ODM Pentagon is not Raila Odinga's running mate.

But Moi's suggestion was rejected as the athuri argued that it would be very difficult to dump Kirwa after the elections were he to be named the running mate. Mutahi argued that Uhuru's support from the Kalenjin in 2012 would be jeopardized as the Kalenjin would rebel again. "Dukayihie mbogo ithitio. Nitutihitie andu aya maita meri matikugueterera gutihio ka
gatatu", warned Ngunyi, who is married to a Kalenjin, in his presentation. Loosely translated, it means "Never underrate a wounded Buffalo. We have wounded these chaps twice using them in 2002 against Moi and firing them after for Moi's mistakes. They will not wait for a third wound". The athuri finally decided that the VP slot should be left vacant and dangled to all communities especially the Luhya and the Kalenjin to vote for Kibaki.

Apparently, while Kibaki needs Moi's help, the athuri acknowledge that Moi is a danger given the Kroll Report, which revealed that the former President and his family looted public coffers more than Kshs.130 billion. They have decided to restrict Moi to campaigns against ODM in Rift Valley where they believe corruption by Moi is not an issue. Yet some members in the group are cautious with this arrangement arguing that it may backfire and hurt Kibaki on the platform of Corruption. It is with this in mind that an anxious Moi, whose moles had leaked the reservations by the athuri to him, met Kibaki at State House Nakuru for 45 minutes on November 29, 2007.

Sources reveal that Moi wanted assurance that Kibaki would not renege on a secret deal never to prosecute Moi and his family for crimes committed during his era. To secure protection Moi secured a free ride to Parliament for his sons and his private secretary, John Lokorio in three constituencies on a Kanu ticket. Moi who had just arrived back from Ethiopia contributed Kshs3 billion to Kibaki's campaign kitty.

However, a clever Moi said the money will be used by him in Kibaki Tena campaigns in Rift Valley against Raila. Moi is now funding all the pro-Kibaki candidates in the province. It is also believed that it is from this money that leaflets against Raila are being produced and distributed in Rift Valley.

The more dastardly of the cash use is the funding of ethnic clashes in Molo. Kikuyu and Kalenjin youth are being paid to kill and burn houses belonging to Kisii migrant workers in the area in an attempt to cut down ODM votes in the native Kisii-Nyanza. The pro-Kibaki media have deliberately chosen to focus on source interviews and nametag captions showing the Kisii as the victims. Yet this is not new. It is the third phase after the failure when government ignited ethnic flare-ups on the Kisii-Kalenjin border at Sondu mid this year as the ODM wave hit fever pitch in the country. The second phase failed where widows and orphans would be paid to parade themselves as victims of ethnic clashes in Kisii. It looks like Moi has now gone for the real ones by igniting the Kuresoi killings.

The 44th Jamhuri day celebrations offered President Kibaki the last unadulterated forum to sell his re-election candidacy to Kenyans. Well aware of this he seized the opportunity to parade his record for scrutiny. And there is where he took the lid off the can of worms.

If only we were to live in nostalgia retrospectively? But alas Kibaki promised a clean government and even promised to fire any minister mentioned in corrupt deals. Well Kenyans must be living in a different planet from their leaders.

With the yoke of Anglo Leasing choking his administration it couldn't have come at a bad time. Ministers mentioned to have been the masterminds behind the scam were suspended and reinstated without any pretence to remorse or due cause of the law.

To rub salt into the political wound, Kalonzo stole the opportunity to declare his wealth while challenging Emilio and Raila to follow suit by leading by example and from the front. But your guess is as good as mine none of them will pick the gauntlet when it smacks off a trap to reveal the rot within just like refusing live TV debate when you fear being unmasked.

You don’t expect to soil yourself and not invite all types of flies to pay you a visit. Besides image being everything, Kibaki has been in the business long enough for such an amateurish goof. How much that is going to cost him politically will only become clear come December 27. But it is certainly one blot he would tactfully do without. Trust scoundrels to measure to their tag literally.
