The biggest problem with many Kenyans is that they already know it all. Common sense tells you immediately that a person who thinks they know too much actually knows very little.
For instance many of our readers downplay foreign influence in Kenya and are convinced that it is of no consequence in the forthcoming elections and that Kenyans themselves will decide the destiny of their nation, unhindered and free of any external forces or influence. How naïve can a person get? Or maybe we should just say that the American good-guy-propaganda has been extremely effective in Kenya. Incidentally one of the roles of the CIA is to disseminate propaganda (see my other post).

CIA activities in Kenya revealed by African Confidential and The Observer in London
What you don't know about the CIA

Old Chinese proverb
======================================
A new book published this month (that every African should read) reveals for the first time in great detail covert methods used by the dreaded American government intelligence unit (the CIA) to control and alter the course of things in third world and African countries. The book is written by Larry Devlin, the CIA's chief of station in mineral rich Congo in the 60s and most of the 70s. The book is titled Chief of Station, Congo—fighting The Cold War in a Hot Zone.
But even more revealing is a series of leaked emails that were first published by the respected African Confidential that seem to confirm current CIA illegal mercenary operations in East Africa. One of the places frequently mentioned as the hub of activities is Nairobi, Kenya. Another article talking about the leaked emails was also published in the London-based The Observer on Sunday September 10, 2006.
Let me try and simplify this for you. We all know that after 9/11 the chief concern of the United States government has bee terrorism and the Al-Qaeda. The United States government has openly stated that it will prevent any country becoming a free haven for terrorists although it refuses to comment on Somalia. Already we have seen Ethiopian troops invade that country to oust the Islamic courts government that had started thriving there, which was followed by bombings of targets within Somalia by American planes.
I am well aware that foreign affairs bores most people, more so Kenyans, but please bear with me a moment so that I drive my very important point home.
There is a lot of CIA activity on the ground in Somalia at this very moment. Guess where all of it is being operated and co-coordinated from? Hint; not Kampala and not Dar-es-salaam.
Now obviously American interests in the region are that the next president of Kenya and the government plays ball, so that the only remaining super power in the world can take care of its' national security issues in the region. Kenya is currently playing ball and has already started reaping the fruits and benefits of doing so.
If you have been reading and listening to the news recently, you will know that all of a sudden the America-based IMF has given Kenya a clean bill of health and released large chunks of previously held donor funds. Why the sudden change of heart?
One thing you must also know is that even leading opposition figures and especially presidential candidates, are frightened to comment about this CIA and American influence in the country because it will jeopardize their chances of ascending to the presidency. These are powerful international forces that only a fool will ignore.
In 1997, doe instance, the Americans were very determined to get Moi out of power. Kenyans will remember those general elections as the elections that saw vast amounts of money expended by a party known as SDP (Social Democratic Party). The presidential candidate was Charity Ngilu who looked like the ideal compromise candidate to unite the opposition. Most of the cash for this party was being expended by one Prof Anyang Nyong'o. But where did those funds come from?
Maybe there is a clue in a strange statement that then Kanu general secretary Joseph Kamotho made at the time. He warned some unnamed persons that Kenya was not the Philippines where leaders could be imposed. Was he referring to the way Corazon Aquino had won elections in that country in a campaign that was said to have been heavily funded by the Americans? Was he suggesting that somebody was trying to use the same tactics here in Kenya?
Nobody likes terrorists and like it or not, this is a problem that Kenyans have experienced for themselves, not once but on two separate terrorist bombings, one of which claimed hundreds of innocent Kenyan lives. Indeed the Americans are doing an excellent job in waking up our government of sleepy grandpas to the reality on the ground, especially in relation to the rapid spread of Islamic fundamentalism fueled by Somalia nationals who have flooded into the country in recent times.
However the problem is that American interests contradict interests of the ordinary Kenyan desperate for change in that they would naturally oppose and frustrate a populist candidate determined to address the problems of ordinary wananchi. They would naturally favor the safe guy they are already doing deals with.

The African Confidential And Observer Reveal CIA Activities In Kenya And East Africa
Here I reproduce the controversial Observer article published late last year. Already those of us who are observant will have seen the tell tale signs confirming the contents of the article that you are about to read. They include increased military exercises in the region and the presence of at least one huge military ship off the East African Coast.

Emails suggest that the CIA knew of plans by private military companies to breach UN rules

The Observer
Dramatic evidence that America is involved in illegal mercenary operations in east Africa has emerged in a string of confidential emails seen by The Observer. The leaked communications between US private military companies suggest the CIA had knowledge of the plans to run covert military operations inside Somalia - against UN rulings - and they hint at involvement of British security firms.
The emails, dated June this year, reveal how US firms have been planning undercover missions in support of President Abdullahi Yusuf's transitional federal government - founded with UN backing in 2004 - against the Supreme Islamic Courts Council - a radical Muslim militia which took control of Mogadishu, the country's capital, also in June promising national unity under Sharia law.
Evidence of foreign involvement in the conflict would not only breach the UN arms embargo but could destabilise the entire region.
One email dated Friday, 16 June, is from Michele Ballarin, chief executive of Select Armor - a US military firm based in Virginia. Ballarin's email was sent to a number of individuals including Chris Farina of the Florida-based military company ATS Worldwide.
Ballarin said: 'Boys: Successful meeting with President Abdullay Yussef [sic] and his chief staff personnel in Nairobi, Kenya on Tuesday ... where he invited us to his private hotel suite flacked by security detail ... He has appointed is chief of presidential protocol as our go to during this phase.'
She refers to one 'closed-door meeting' with a senior UN figure and mentions there are 'a number of Brit security firms' also looking to get involved.
Ballarin claimed she has been given 'carte blanche' to use three bases in Somalia 'and the air access to reach them'.
She then suggests that the CIA have been kept informed of the plans. Ballarin states: 'My contact whom we discussed from the agency side requested an in-person meeting with me. I arrived in New York at 2340 last night and was driven to Virginia - arriving at 0200 today.'
According to the highly respected newsletter, Africa Confidential, which originally published extracts of the emails last week, Select Armor started its operation planning in Kampala, Uganda. The emails suggest that the Ugandan government were willing to help secure arms supplies for any operation although this is denied by security officials in Kampala.
In one reply to Ballarin, Farina said: 'A forced entry operation [into Mogadishu] at this point without the addition of follow-on forces who can capitalise on the momentum/initiative of the initial op will result in a replay of Dien Bien Phu'. This is a reference to the defeat of French colonial forces in Indochina in 1953.
The website of Farina's company ATS boasts it 'can execute operations in support of host national indigenous forces'. ATS claims it uses former US and British special operations personnel.
One email discussing funding of any operation sent from Farina to Ballarin states: 'We may have to re-focus our efforts in the US among the DOS [State Department] and DOD [Defence Department] to bring any forward movement to this effort.'
The Observer left several messages with both Select and ATS requesting interviews but nobody responded. Ballarin told Africa Confidential last week that the company's operations in Somalia were 'classified'.

Facts About The CIA
The CIA or Central Intelligence Agency is an intelligence agency of the United States government similar to the British MI6.
Its objectives include obtaining and analyzing information about foreign governments, corporations, and persons, and reporting such information to the branches of the United States Government.
Another function of the CIA is propaganda or public relations, overt and covert information dissemination, both true and false, and influencing others to decide in favor of the United States Government.
The third function of the CIA is what has widely been referred to "as the hidden hand of the U.S. government." This generally involves engaging in covert operations at the direction of the President.
Interestingly this last function is what has caused most controversy for the CIA, raising questions about the legality, morality, effectiveness, and intelligence of such operations.
The CIA has been successful on thousands of missions that remain secret. We actually only get to hear of the failures. Like the CIA-organized Bay of Pigs Invasion of Cuba in 1961. The failed para-military invasion embarrassed the CIA and the United States world-wide. Later, the CIA several times tried and failed to assassinate Fidel Castro.
On the propaganda front, since World War II, the CIA has broadened spy and counterspy missions in Europe and around the World. It has also led infiltration, propaganda and “sponsoring” missions in various intellectual circles with the support of important American cultural institutes.
But mostly CIA mission and activities mostly get very dirty and complicated. Several witnesses and persons in the know have insisted that the CIA has been involved in drug trafficking to fund illegal operations. In 1996 for instance, a journalist called Gary Wenn wrote a series of very well-researched articles for a famous American newspaper, the San Jose Mercury where he claimed that US aircrafts that supplied arms to the Contras in Nicaragua brought in cocaine to the United States on their return trips.
Faced with congressional and media criticism over the controversial stories, the San Jose Mercury News refused to stand by the story and retracted it and prevented Webb from doing any more investigative reporting. Webb ended up giving quitting journalism for good.
The CIA has of course come under stinging criticism for failing to predict the collapse of the Soviet Union and India's nuclear tests. But the biggest failure according to its' critics as the failure to see the September 11, 2001 attacks coming let alone forestalling them.

Sunday Smile: Wapi Kibaki?
One day while in parliament buildings, Raila happen to mention to another legislator friend from Nyanza the fact that he had had a nightmare recently had that caused him to wake up sweating and shaking in horror. He had woken up shouting the words, wapi Kibaki.
Kalonzo overheard that last remark and was shocked and quickly approached Agwambo. "Agwambo, my friend," he said in his usual hypocritical high-pitched voice, I had exactly the same nightmare. How can this be? I also woke up screaming the words wapi Kibaki. Please describe the nightmare."
Raila started sweating and told Kalonzo; "Please it is too terrifying, you describe your nightmare first?"
So they argued back and forth and finally moved on to their other duties in the August house without revealing the exact nature of their dreams which seemed to have been similar and ended with them waking up while they were still screaming the words; Wapi Kibaki?
It was only later that close aides and confidantes whom the two had described their nightmares to, discovered details of the identical "bad dreams" the two politicians had.
Raila had dreamt that he was standing at Uhuru park and that Kalonzo was lifting a bible in his right hand to take the oath of office for the presidency. He tried to move to stop him in the dream but could not. It was as if his feet were made of heavy lead. So he strated screaming at the top of his voice, "Wapi Kibaki, wapi Kibaki?"
Klaonzo had an identical dream only that in his version, Agwambo was holding up the bible to take the oath of office.
Both men work up sweating profusely, shaking and terrified beyond words.

Fascinating Side Shows At Grace Wahu’s Funeral
Ngando is a place that always brings the emotions flooding back for me. More so the road the leads to the home of the late Mrs Grace Wahu Kenyatta, the first wife of founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. After all that is the very same road I used for the six years that I was a student at nearby Lenana High School.
But there were hardly any emotions yesterday at Ngando during a funeral service to bid Mama Wahu the last farewell. It was more of a celebration of a life well and fully lived. Former president Moi probably put it best when he said that for anybody to live beyond 100 years to the 105 years Wahu lived is a blessing that can only come from the Almighty.

Grace got married to Johnstone Kamau (that was his name then) in 1919. Her husband at the time worked at the Nairobi City Council. Grace must have been rather proud of her catch because he was one of the very few Africans at the time who moved around in a motorbike. But maybe, just maybe, she might have changed her mind had she seen what was ahead. If truth be told, Grace hardly ever lived with her husband apart from a brief spell of two or three years right at the beginning. The man left for a long trip to Britain where he got married to a mzungu (actually a maid at the house where Johnstone Kamau worked as the gardener. Mr Kamau came back in the early 50s only to be detained shortly after. He was picked up from his house in the middle of the night in an operation that was not very different from the one that netted notorious gangster Simon Matheri at his Athi River residence almost two months ago. Only that they led Mr Kamua (later to be known as Jomo Kenyatta) away in handcuffs and did not fell him in a hail of bullets even after he had surrenedered.
Little wonder that Wahu had only two children with Johnstone Kamau, namely Peter Muigai and Margaret Kenyatta who is much older than Kamau’s last wife, Mama Ngina Kenyatta. They say no man can be a hero to his own wife and to Wahu President Jomo Kenyatta will always be her handsome ambitious Johnstone Kamau with such a wonderful sense of humour.
But what was really fascinating about this funeral service were the side shows.
The three main speakers were President Kibaki, Uhuru Kenyatta (who was also one of the pall bearers) and of course retired President Moi. It is amazing how former President Moi has this ability to quickly bond with the audience and he ended up delivering the best speech in the event.
Even more interesting was how the crowd gathered outside cheered Moi so wildly asd he was l;eaving. The Mzee briefly waved back and rushed away almost looking embarrassed at this show of affection from the wananchi. I thought to myself, “he does not want to offend Kibaki with so much at stake in the coming elections.”

Who Will Inspire Us?
I love a lot of things about this job at Kumekucha. However one of the things I really loathe is having to listen to Kenyan politicians attempt to make speeches. Virtually the whole lot are extremely boring.
Founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta was an exception. The man had charm with a capital “C”. You would hang on his every word and feel a little disappointed when it was suddenly over. It must have rubbed off a little on the man who took over from him. I once listened to Moi make a speech somewhere deep in Kiambu in 1995 where he started by announcing the exact paltry number of presidential votes he had gotten from the area in 1992. He then went on to hold the crowd spellbound telling them of his commitment to their specific problems which he listed one by one. You don’
T catch such stuff on TV but I was utterly amazed and wondered whether this was really the man whom we had all determined had to go for there to be a better Kenya.
The current president, well, let me tone down my true opinion and just say that he is hopeless. No sense of humour, no inspiration, nothing.
Not that Raila Odinga is any better. This football match thing he keeps on repeating tends to get tiresome and boring, at the end of the day one cannot help asking themselves, what has the man really said.
Kalonzo Musyoka? (Heavy sigh from me). L:et me just say that if Kenya had a jury system like the Unityed States, Musyoka would never have managed to convince any jury of anything, whether or not he had the facts and evidence. That’s how uninspiring the guy’s high-pitched voice is.
Even Kamukunji parliamentary hopeful Patrick Lumumba is know for hiw wide vocabulary and catchy phrases but can hardly be described as an inspiring speaker.
Kumekucha hopes that the new emerging candidates who will show their faces in the forthcoming general elections will be the inspiring type and that the next president of Kenya will be an orator as well as a man of action. Kenyans badly need a nelson Mandela to inspire them to a new beginning and to help lead them to the Promised Land we all crave.

How The Creation Of Four New Provinces Will Aid President Kibaki's Re-election
In an earlier article in this site, I showed readers how President Kibaki has his 25 per cent of the vote requirement for his re-election assured in only 4 provinces and yet he needs 5. I named those 4 provinces already in the bag as Central, Nairobi, Eastern and Rift Valley. So you can imagine my reaction when I came across news two days ago of the new proposal from the government side in the ongoing constitutional review talks that 4 new provinces be formed.

The consequences of things are not always proportionate to the apparent magnitude of those events that have produced them. Thus the American Revolution, from which little was expected, produced much; but the French Revolution, from which much was expected, produced little."
Charles Caleb Colton quotes (English sportsman and writer, 1780-1832)
====================================
My jaw dropped almost to the ground. Could this be a ploy to secure the elusive 5th province for the incumbent? Or knowing that this is a very sensitive issue, could it be yet another delaying tactic to ensure that the talks drag on until the elections are virtually at our doorstep and it is too late to legislate certain sensitive proposals that are deemed unfriendly to the incumbent?
Still, this new proposal raises another even more disturbing question. Is this government sensitive to the goings-on in the country and especially the extremely prickly nature of new boundaries? We have seen the trouble that the creation of new districts has caused in places like Meru where houses were even razed to the ground recently. We have also seen politicians almost coming to blows over where the district headquarters of a new district should be. What then can we expect from the creation of new provinces? And not just one or two but FOUR provinces?
And the new government proposal gets even more interesting when one sits down to analyze the four provinces most likely to yield new provinces, if the proposal goes through. They are the vast and densely populated Rift Valley, densely populated Central and Nairobi and the huge and densely populated in many areas, Eastern. The exact same provinces where the president already has his 25 per cent!
Meaning that even if the requirement for presidential candidates to be elected were increased from 5 to even 8 provinces, the incumbent will still not have any serious problems attaining the new requirement. Albeit depending on where the new boundaries are in some of the new provinces. Admittedly that is not a problem because we all know where the task of mapping out the new boundaries will fall.
This brings us to my earlier point in this site, which was not well received by many of you. And that is one of the first things we must escape from is the habit of making constitutional amendments for selfish self-serving reasons.
Before we even start looking at the boundaries, the priority for Kenya at the moment is urgently required change in leadership, style of governance and our politics. Otherwise the creation of new provinces and districts is simply creating new centers of concentration for resources to enable more "eating" by politicians and our so-called leaders.
Interestingly this latest revelation was made by assistant ministers Mwangi Kiunjuri and Danston Mungatana after a so-called tour of Magarani constituency where a by-election is due.

Is President Kibaki’s Daughter About To Marry One Of The Artur Brothers?
It was another shocker for Kenyans when the government revealed that they would not make public the findings of the Artur brothers’ affair claiming that to do so would be a threat to the security of the state.
This was after millions of shillings in public funds were spent on an inquiry into the affairs of Artur Magaryan and Artur Sargasyan, the Armenian duo who wrecked havoc in the country by bullying all and sundry and culminated in the two drawing guns at a restricted area at the Jomo Kenyatta airport which finally resulted in their long overdue deportation.
However, maverick Langata MP Raila Odinga who exposed the Armenians in the first place says they are back in the country and are still enjoying state protection as one of them has president Kibaki's daughter (by a second wife) as a fiancé and the couple are about to get married here in Nairobi.
Winfred Wangui , the daughter of Kibaki's second wife, Mary Wambui appeared on television two days ago defending her Armenian lover to the chagrin of the government. Was this to prepare the Kenyan public for the alleged wedding?
The foreigners who arrived in the country under the guise of being foreign investors turned out to be international criminals dealing in drugs and arms as it is relaiably reported that they showed immense interest in the Sh 6 billion cocaine haul seized by the government and stored at the GSU unit headquarters.
They were also implicated in the infamous raid on the Standard newspapers newsroom where hooded policemen terrified journalists and other employees in the mid night raid that minister John Michuki later admitted the government was behind. The two foreigners were found to have been issued with police identity cards with a very high rank.
Eight government officials were suspended over the affair including the president's illegitimate daughter who was at the time a senior official in the ministry of foreign affairs and is said to have arranged for V.I.P treatment for the two when they arrived in the country.
Also implicated was a senior state house official Stanley Murage who is said to have introduced the thugs to the president as foreign investors. Murage who is in charge of policy analysis and strategy at State House happens to be very close to the president and therefore remained untouched over the fiasco.
It is obvious that the government does not want to release the report for the simple reason that it will show the world what sacks of money and the right connections can do for foreigners in Kenya.
Among those said to have been in the payroll of the gangsters are senior government officials including cabinet ministers, top police officers, state house operatives and even journalists who received Sh 10,000 bribes each on attending the famous parties they threw in their Runda residence on weekends.
These smooth talking criminals managed to infiltrate sensitive departments of the government and even used government vehicles not to mention the security accorded to them by the crack general service unit (GSU).
It was as a result of this that opposition politicians said the two were hit men brought in by government operatives to carry out assassinations on popular opposition politicians. This claim turned out to be more plausible when it was discovered that the duo had served in the military in their home country and in particularly, in crack special forces.
What Kenyans are waiting for now is the wedding of the decade between Wangui and Artur Magaryan which will confirm that the duo are not only back in the country but will have increased their influence immensely by marrying the president's daughter who has already caused enough heartache and embarrassment to the first family.

Can Kenyan Schools Do Without Caning?
'Save the rod and spoil the child'. That is the popular saying by parents who mete out corporal punishment to their errant children. But this also seems to be on the lips of scores of teachers who have defied the government directive that pupils and students should NOT be caned. In fact it is a criminal offence to cane a student in schools these days.
A teacher who I spoke to recently told me there was no way she was going to teach pupils especially those in the lower classes without using the cane as this was the only form of discipline they understood or better still, the most effective.
The same teacher who also has a school going daughter said she did not mind her being spanked once in a while when she exhibited naughty behavior and adds the government should never have outlawed caning in the first place
She goes further to justify corporal punishment by saying strikes have increased in recent years since caning was abolished and she is among the many teacher's countrywide who want corporal punishment restored.
Many lauded the government for banning 'the stick' as they were extreme cases where students were badly injured and admitted to hospital while in rare cases, they were beaten to death.
As a matter of fact, such cases have not stopped even with the government directive of banning caning and the ministry of education should have provided for an alternative discipline measure when it scrapped corporal punishment. But it did not.
Don’t get me wrong, this blogger does not support corporal punishment and I believe it is an outdated and archaic way of instilling discipline but the authorities concerned should come out with a clear cut alternative to discipline or caning will never stop in both public and private schools as majority of teachers do not know any other way.

Young Teenagers Still Getting Married Off To Grandpas In Kenya
Thousands of teenage girls are not only having babies every year but a large number of them are also getting married to men who are as old as their grandfathers, if not older.
This trend has been attributed to poverty as poor men sell off their daughters while culture and religion has a lot to do with it as Muslims do not consider education to be important and according to them, a thirteen year old girl is ready for marriage. This is ironic because the concept of a university is attributed top Islam.
This attitude amongst Kenyan Muslims is conformed by statistics where most married teenage girls are to be found in coast and north eastern province which are pre-dominantly Muslim. It is also in these areas that girl child education is almost non existent.
There are a number of non governmental organizations that have done a lot in ensuring the girl child remains in school like going to the extent of supplying sanitary towels to the female students who are known to stay at home when they have their monthly periods as they can’t afford the towels and don’t want to be in class when the blood flows.
A few months ago, health minister Charity Ngilu openly wept during a tour of coast province when she could not believe her eyes on seeing that majority of those seeking post natal services in health facilities were teenage mothers barely fifteen years old.
She spoke strongly over the matter and said the trend should be stopped at all costs as it was denying the teenagers much needed education that they required for their empowerment. Sadly these utterances are yet to be followed by any actions from the Ministry.
The government seemed to have played its part when it introduced free and compulsory primary education but ironically there are those who still feel it applies to boys only while it’s optional for girls.
What must be done is to overcome these outdated and archaic cultural beliefs that have also resulted in wanton abuse of the girl child not to mention the violence they are exposed to at a very young age as a result of abusive marriages.
This bloggers heart bleeds for the thousands of teenage girls who are forced into early marriages by their selfish parents and hope one day the girls will have a voice to say they want an education and would prefer to enjoy their childhood and not to be burdened by the complicated nature of marriages at their tender age.

Why The Petrol Shortage In Kenya Will Get A Lot Worse
You arrive at a filling station with barely enough fuel only to be told the last thing you expected to hear. No fuel. The attendant is helpful and suggests a certain filling station right across town.
This is a common scene today in major towns of Kenya like Nairobi and Mombasa.

Quip for the day;
We have a very simple choice as Kenyans in the forthcoming general elections; either we do what we have always done and elect the same guys back into office, or try something totally new and radical. Cancer is not dealt with in small measures, only radical surgery works.
==================================
So why is there a fuel shortage when the government is still insisting that there is enough fuel in the country? The explanation given is that the pipeline, which transports fuel from the refinery in Mombasa to the rest of the country, is operating at full capacity but is unable to meet the demand. Minister of Energy Kiraitu Murungi says that Kenyans will have to bare with the situation until December when the Kenya Pipeline parastatal that owns and runs the pipeline will have been able to double the current capacity.
Actually the question we should be asking is what triggered the crisis? Supporters of President Kibaki will be quick to say that it is the rapidly expanding economy hungry for fuel. Unfortunately the answer is no as simple as that. Nairobi is a major hub of activity in the region. Countless relief organizations covering a vast area in the region are all based in Nairobi. Recently there has been an increase in these relief activities, more so as the world has suddenly started paying much more attention to the unfolding crisis in Darfur. There is also increased military activity triggered off by an ongoing campaign to mow down suspected terrorist cell activities in Somalia. This has led to an escalation of fighting in that country, which has once again necessitated increased humanitarian aid. Let us also not forget our very own Mt Elgon skirmishes where humanitarian aid activity has risen considerably over the last few weeks.
It is quite possible that a combination of factors has caused the demand for fuel to peak rather suddenly and that is what has triggered the current crisis.
However there is one thing we can all be sure of. And that is the fact that it is bound to get worse. The reason is simple. Many motorists in Kenya have the habit of moving around with barely enough fuel. Now with the crisis, most people will purchase as much fuel as they can when they do find it. This sudden "hoarding" on a massive scale will make the situation a lot worse.
But there is one question we need to ask Mr Kiraitu Murungi and the bureaucrats at the Ministry of energy. Could they not have seen this crisis coming long before it happened?

Kenya Airways Pilot Murdered By Two People With One AK47 Rifle
Captain John Ndung’u Mugwanja, who had also served in the Kenya Airforce, was shot dead at his house in Kamuguga area, near Zambezi in Kiambu district.
Muguga in the outskirts of Nairobi witnessed a rather bizarre incident yesterday when a Kenya Airways pilot was murdered in cold blood right in his house as his family witnessed. He was shot several times with what eyewitnesses say was an AK47 rifle.
Police say the pilot’s name was Captain John Ndung’u Mugwanja.
Although the thugs tried to make the whole incident look like a robbery, they failed miserably. They asked the man's wife for money, but when they reached him, they simply dragged him to the bathroom and shot him dead. The killing was carried out by two people while another 5 kept vigil outside.
The victim apparently knew what was coming and may have known the reason for his execution because his daughter said that he looked at her and then looked up towards heaven moments before the bullets brutally cut into him.
This incident is not about the escalating crime, but in fact it is about the increasing number of "executions" or "hits" in the country, which are never explained.
It is time for the authorities and especially the police whose favorite tactic is being economical with the facts, to tell Kenyans what is happening and why so many people are being murdered for no apparent reason.
Being a Kenya Airways captain, this latest victim's death is open to plenty of speculation. Could he have refused to co-operate with drug traffickers and this was a revenge execution? Or was the motive more personal?

Love Triangle "Executions" On The Increase In Kenya
The Nation sex scandal illustrates one fact for sure. And that is Kenyans have gone out of control sexually in the work place. This immorality can be directly linked to the rising number of unexplained hits on ordinary Kenyans.
Apparently the increase in illegal firearms in the country makes it very easy for an aggrieved party to hire hit men to settle the score. Sometimes it is the husband tired of his wife's affair with another, usually wealthier person. It could even be the boss in the office. Nothing is more hurting to a man than being left by a woman because he does not have the money or at least not in enough quantities.
On other occasions it could even be a crime of passion. A wife is upset because a certain woman gold digger is after her husband and so she decides to act before it is too late. There is also increasing evidence of women who fall in love outside their marriages and see their husbands as an obstacle or hindrance to their happiness with the new found lover.
Whatever the motive is, you can always be sure that in cases of murder the murderer is almost always a person who is very close to the deceased.
On a lighter note, times have really changed because not too long ago, Kenyans had a less deadly, although deeply embarrassing way of dealing with illicit lovers enjoying the favors of their wives in their absence. Did you hear of this case of a Kamba man that set a trap and took a long trip to Mombasa or some distant place. He was sure that if anything happened he would find the man still in the act. And sure enough the minute the man penetrated his wife, he was trapped because after the act, he could not disengage, try as he did. The story goes that the couple stayed like that (locked in their love-making) which even a doctor who was summoned to the scene could not deal with. The husband was called and took his time getting to his house. On arrival he took in the scene in great detail, from different angles as his eyes burned with emotion. It is said that he then picked up a small knife and removed the dagger from it's sheath and immediately the couple were disengaged.
Very embarrassing bcause the whole nighborhood got to hear of what happened, but al least both parties lived to learn their lesson.
Incidentally infidelity in marriage is an increasing problem worldwide. Read Kumekucha's expert analysis on why modern life is causing more cheating amongst spouses.

Once when I was in desperate need of a job, I sat down and wrote about 20 emails to various companies in Nairobi and then I forgot all about it. Barely 2 weeks later I got a call on my cell phone asking me when I would be available for an interview. I ended up getting an excellent well-paying job.
A friend of mine working in Tanzania as a high school teacher felt a little home sick and wanted to come back to Kenya without losing the wonderfully high salary he was earning. He surfed the net and visited a couple of school websites. He then sent off not more than 10 emails to different schools. As you read this he started working in January this year in a private school based in Mombasa.
Amid the serious problem of joblessness in Kenya, the Internet is the place to hunt for a job. And you do not have to limit yourself to Kenya or even Africa. An increasing number of Kenyans are securing jobs in Dubai. This is the subject of the first of many self-help articles we will carry in this blog. Naturally one has to be very cautious because the net is full of tricksters and conmen. But this should not stop you. It doesn’t mean that just because there are so many carjackers in Nairobi, you should never drive a car. You can drive and just make sure you take all the necessary precautions you can.
For the careful, a good place to start is with Myjobseye.com because they are based locally and if there is any money to be paid out, you can always walk to their offices to find out what is happening.
You can also send emails directly to companies after visiting their websites. But be carefully not to SPAM--that is to send out dozens of emails that are exactly the same to companies at random. This is a criminal offence in many parts of he world and will not get you anywhere. Visit a website, study what the company does and needs in relation to your qualifications and then send them an email attaching your CV.

Jobs In Dubai: How To Get Them, Even If You Are A Fresher
Special self help Kumekucha feature
One of the biggest worries those looking for jobs in Dubai have are the costs of flying out for the interview. Actually it is quite common for potential employers to fly out short-listed candidates at their expense. Sometimes arrangements are even made for an interview in the applicants' home country. On very few occasions will a person be required to pay his or her own airfare.
Dubai has a huge and growing expatriate population because it has attracted companies from all over the world and the expertise required is just not available locally. It is also easier to secure a job in Dubai than any other International destination because many people in Europe and the western world in general are reluctant to work anywhere in the Arab world.
The best way to launch your online campaign to secure a job in Dubai is to start with free sites and then later you can try the other sites that usually ask for a nominal fee.
Using the Keyword; "jobs in Dubai" on the Google search engine, you can click on the Google jobs ad which usually has a high number of directly advertised jobs available in Dubai. You can then contact the companies directly.
The other worry many potential jobseekers for positions in Dubai have is about annual leave and the expenses involved of flying their entire family back home. Most companies in Dubai give employees an annual 5-week vacation and will fly out the whole family at the expense of the company.
A job in Dubai may be just what you need currently; I wish you the best in your efforts and please do be cautious at all times.

Opposition Say "NO" To Karua Being Vice Chair
When vice president Moody Awori spoke yesterday on the seemingly minor point of his co chair on the constitutional reform team, murmurs rent the air. Members of the opposition made it very clear that they were not comfortable with justice minister Martha Karua as vice chair.
Marakwet MP, the striking Linah Chebii Kilimo did not mince her words and feelings about Karua and said outrightly that Karua was arrogant and there was no where the talks were headed for if she deputized for Awori.

Caustic Mbita MP Otieno Kajwang who has little time for Karua also spelt doom for the talks if Karua chaired some of the sessions and accused her of having little time for the opposition.
It is an open secret that Karua hates Raila Odinga with a passion yet the maverick Langata legislator is a member of the crucial team and is expected to make plenty of contributions that are bound not augur well with the government side.
During the final days of the 'bomas constitutional talks', Karua is said to have lost her head and literally went for Raila's throat and called him an 'uncircumcised boy' for misleading Kenyans about the draft.
The photo that went round the world. KissFM breakfast queen Caroline Mutoko and comedian Nyambane get the “daggers” look from tough cookie constitutional affairs minister Martha Karua when going for a hearing in which the Minister accused the trio of defamation in 2004.
However, over the past few months, especially after Karua was appointed justice minister, she has worked hard to re-package herself and is 'less bitchy' and seems to tolerate dissenting voices without becoming abrasive and abusive.
In fact her character has changed so much that Kenyans have almost forgotten her sexual escapade on the back seat of her official car that ended up badly as they were caught in the act by gangsters who robbed Hon Karua of Sh 12,000 and gold earrings.
Sections of the gutter press claimed that she had also been raped. However none of my impeccable sources have been able to confirm this and it was probably just pure speculation because many carjackings these days end up in rape.
However sources confirm to this blogger that Ms Karua has stuck to her man and still travels on weekends around golf courses with Father John Wamugunda who is a lecturer at Nairobi University and was appointed director of the Postal Corporation of Kenya. He is a catholic priest.
The 'tough' Karua took kiss 100 radio station to court for defamation over the Wamugunda affair but withdrew the case when she was appointed justice minister to replace the then embattled Kiraitu Murungi who was facing corruption allegations.
Majority of Kenyans do not have any confidence in Karua making any positive impact in the delivery of any constitutional amendments ahead of the forthcoming general elections. She has often taken a hardliner hence chances of getting a new document during her watch at the justice and constitutional affairs ministry is a very long shot indeed.

Is The Government Using Delaying Tactics Again Over Constitutional Reforms?
Time is moving pretty fast. Can you imagine that we are already rapidly heading towards the end of April?
Yesterday the reforms talks ground to yet another halt when the opposition rejected the appointment of Martha Karua as co-chair. Just the right tactic to further delay the process as the clock continues to tick.
In fact there are those analysts who see the inclusion of Karua as co-chair as part of a grand time-wasting plan. Karua is extremely intelligent and will always come up with just the sort of technicalities that will bog down the committee endlessly.
The last time the government sat with the opposition to iron out proposal details concerning the constitution, there were many areas where both sides did not agree. This time there is only one bone of contention and it is the issue of the controversial 50 per cent plus one requirement for a candidate to be declared duly elected as president of Kenya.
Political analysts believe that there is no way president Kibaki’s team will succumb to pressure and allow the new proposed rule to become law.
Personally, I have carefully looked at both sides of the coin and agree with many readers that it could be just the remedy to help us de-tribalize the presidential elections as much as possible. My problem is with the motive behind the proposal. The man really pushing for the new legislation is Raila Odinga and his motive is clear—he sees it as the only chance for him to become president. The thinking is that in a field that has to be whittled down to two candidates, Raila and his handlers are virtually sure that son of Jaramogi will qualify for the finals. And they are equally confident that in a Kibaki versus Raila final contest the rest of Kenya will unite against Kibaki and the Kikuyu. On this last point, they urgently need to re-do their homework.

Can Raila Odinga Overcome Years Of Jomo Kenyatta’s Very Effective Propaganda?
Many readers of this blog get very angry when I bring up the facts about the deliberate peddling of anti-Luo propaganda by the Jomo Kenyatta administration that began in earnest shortly after the assassination of Topm Mboya in July 1969.
Most Kenyans today have no information about this critical time of Kenya’s history and many are not interested. They just “know” that Raila cannot make a good president of Kenya and that’s that.
The truth is that of all candidates so far, Raila is best suited and surely no other Kenyan deserves the presidency more. While Kalonzo Musyoka was busy harassing his preserved opponents for supremacy in Kamba politics; folks like Prof Philip Mbithi, Raila was getting kicked in all the wrong places in torture chambers in Nyayo House.
But alas, that is exactly what effective propaganda is supposed to do. It is clear to me that a significant number of Kenyans if faced with the narrowed choice of either Raila or Kibaki for the presidency, will opt for Kibaki. Not because Kibaki is the better man, but simply because of effective propaganda over the years. Now the big question is, will there be enough numbers left on Raila’s side for him to still win the presidency? That is the area where opinion is sharply divided between the analysts. Those whose answer to this question is “Yes” point top the referendum results and insist that the votes will come in more or less the same way. Those who say “No” insist that the referendum was basically a vote against Kibaki but when two candidates face off and especially Raila versus Kibaki, then the results will be totally different.
What does Kumekucha think? I think both arguments have merit but if Raila were to win such a contest, it would be too close to call. But then may I remind you again that we have our candidate for president in this blog and it is NOT Raila.

Now A Pastor Is Hunted And Murdered In Mt Elgon Skirmishes
A church pastor who was shot several times two nights ago, is the latest victim of the ongoing Mount Elgon clashes.
According to reports. He seems to have been specifically targeted by members of the so-called Sabaot Land Defence Force militiamen. An eye witness account tells of the sad story where the dying man in his last moments asked to be covered by a blanket moments before he died from his gunshot wounds.
Despite vigorous efforts by President Kibaki’s government to defend itself over the crisis, the Mt Elgon crisis raises more questions than answers. Why has it happened when the general elections are at our door step? Why are people (including the slain pastor) killed only a few metres from the police station? How is it that politicianms cannot move around the security zone but the killers are able to with abandon, killing kidnapping maiming and not even sparing small children? What is really going in Mt Elgon?

Is It Fair On Kenyans For Close Relatives To Control Two Powerful Cabinet Posts? | Kenya cabinet President Kibaki
Can't find something you are looking for? Visit our archives
The Ministry that takes care of internal security is pretty powerful. So powerful that one time PS in charge of Internal security, the late Hezekiah Oyugi was dreaded by even cabinet ministers, people who are supposed to be his bosses. It is even whispered that one or two knelt down before him (people don't even kneel before the queen).
So how did the late Oyugi get so powerful? The story goes that during the coup that was to later fail in 1982 as Moi sat down terrified in his Kabarak farm waiting for the inevitable firing squad that he was sure was coming from the coup perpetrators, Oyugi happened to be there. It is not clear how. Some people say he heard of the coup and rushed there to be at Mzee's side.

Quip for the day;
Many readers have openly displayed their ignorance in their critical comments in this blog. I will forever be grateful to the large army of very intelligent Kenyans who read this blog regularly and never lose an opportunity to expose ignorance when they see it. Bravo!!
=====================================
In that time of great uncertainty, the late Oyugi is said to have told the president; "Nitakufa na wewe mzee." In English that is to say; "I will die with you, mzee." Thus when the coup was crushed and Moi lived to die another day, the man he trusted most was Oyugi. He trusted him so much that he used him to lure Ouko to his death. It is ironical that what cost Dr Robert Ouko his life was the belief that your own tribes mate cannot betray you. But betrayal knows no tribal boundaries or even sentimental boundaries. The same Oyugi was betrayed by Moi and died under mysterious circumstances and even in death, Moi told his biographer Morton that Oyugi was responsible for Ouko's murder because the two were competing for supremacy in Luo politics. Some tale, that. Pure hogwash of course.
Keen political observers know what hit Oyugi. This man Nick Biwott was not the type to share power and influence with anybody and so it was just a matter of time. And Oyugi with all the wealth and power he amassed was so drunk with it all that he never saw what hit him, coming. He was sure that the Kabarak declaration guaranteed his safety till kingdom come.
Useful lesson there in human nature and politics, huh? But let us get back to our topic today.
The Ministry of Communications headed by homeboy Mutahi Kagwe is a very powerful ministry indeed. Next to security, communication is the thing to worry about because whoever controls it, has the power to impact security. In 1982 one of the first places that the coup perpetrators took control of was the KBC TV and radio station on Harry Thuku Road in Nairobi.
It is no accident that the two dockets ended up in the hands of two persons President Kibaki can trust.
But there is a big problem here.
Mutahi Kagwe and John Michuki are very close relatives. Mutahi Kagwe is married to John Michuki's daughter, a move I am sure the minister who makes it possible for you to read this blog—if you are in Kenya, has never regretted. Once when Kagwe's fledging media house run into serious financial problems and the auctioneer's hammer was due to fall on the couple's palatial home in Karen, "Dad" came to the rescue of a sweating Mutahi Kagwe. You see "Dad" is stinking rich, with an emphasis on the stinking because most of his money was made giving himself loans to buy prime property in Nairobi when he was the Executive chairman at Kenya Commercial Bank during the Kenyatta days. Some of the property he even organized to rent to the KCB. Heard of a building called Kipande house opposite the GPO on Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi?
Could this be the reason why grandpa Michuki is still in politics, when he should be resting somewhere in Kangema reminiscing over a long career and seeking to appease the ghosts of pre-independence Kenya that haunt him because he was used by the colonial government to undertake human rights atrocities against his own countrymen.
In a country of almost 30 million (and in a parliament of 210 members), these two close relatives were the only people qualified to run their respective ministries. Admittedly Kagwe has done an excellent job at his docket. But that is besides the point because there are bound to be clashes of interest and other dangers. What would mzee Michuki do for instance if he received a dossier from the intelligence that his son in law was importing guns into the country for unclear reasons? Would he rush to arrest him? Or would he hesitate long enough for his son in laws plot to come to fruition?
President John F. Kennedy needed somebody he could trust as AG mainly to deal with his arch rival and enemy, FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover who had plenty of dossiers on him and his extra curricular activities with many a pretty ankle. He got away with that controversial appointment partly due to the charisma the man was born with which he could turn on like a tap and dramatically alter the direction of a press conference that would have otherwise crucified him.
But what do Kenyans say about two close relatives running such key ministries? Please lets' keep tribalism out of this one, we are talking about nepotism here.

But what do Kenyans say about two close relatives running such key ministries? Please lets' keep tribalism out of this one, we are talking about nepotism here.

Message From The Editor About Recent Improvements And New Changes At Kumekucha
Kumekucha Will Now Publish On Saturdays And Sundays
I sincerely appreciate all the tremendous support that most of you have been giving me in this difficult task of keeping you updated daily here at this blog. Thank you very much.
Let me especially thank most of you for your constructive criticism and the numerous ideas you have given me. Please keep them flowing. Don’t worry even if you think that you suggestion may turn out to be painful for me. These days the only pain I feel is for the vast majority of Kenyans who have lost all hope as the country hurtles towards the dogs. So any effort you and me can put in to changing things, I am very interested in.

A reader recently said it was frustrating reading this blog because it was impossible to find previous posts on any topic or subject. I am working hard on that one and by the end of today, the new archives page will be up and running and finding old stories will be very easy.
I have also decided that we will now publish on Saturdays and Sundays as well. To make things even more interesting I will start including self-help and health articles that answer some of the pressing problems you may be facing. For example many Kenyans have successfully gotten very good jobs in Dubai, but many others wonder how to go about it. Tomorrow I will publish a detailed feature complete with links to relevant websites. I am also working on another detailed feature on how to get the best deal when ordering a second hand (or is it re-conditioned) car from Japan.
There are a lot of other exciting things that will be happening here, please keep visiting and leaving your comments. Help me to keep on constantly improving.

Cheating Spouses: The Shocking Facts
Article Directory
Should You Spy? Should You Get A Cheating Spouse Private Investigator? How To Find Out If Your Spouse Is Cheating
An alarmingly increasing number of spouses are cheating on their mates. In fact this is such a major problem that these days comes with so many other potential dangers to many families the world over that the institution of marriage is now under serious threat.
If you doubt for any minute that cheating has escalated within marriages, just check out the rapid rise in private investigator cheating spouse services. More and more spouses are spying on their partners in an effort to catch them cheating.
But the saddest thing of all is that there are very few who understand the motivation and mechanics that lead to a spouse cheating on their marriage contract or on their lover. Nobody really wants to pay attention to what cheating spouse support groups are saying.
Surveillance Helps Reveal Shocking Numbers In Cheating Spouses
A recent survey by a Daily newspaper in Kenya revealed that over 55 per cent of the respondents had recently cheated on their mate—either steady lover or spouse. Let us also assume that many of the respondents who did not admit to having illicit affairs on the side were not being truthful so it is most probably a lot worse than that. You can imagine what the statistics would be like in Western capitals. So rampant has cheating become amongst many spouses that it is almost being looked at as something normal. It just happens too often. Meanwhile all manner of cheating spouse surveillance services are booming.
But let us examine some circumstances and facts nobody talks about when people dare to discuss this subject.
Let us start with the woman. A Woman was created to be loved, fussed over and given plenty of attention. This was very possible inside the cave during the Stone Age where the man protected her and the children by sheer brute force. That is why to date, whether you know it or not the biggest turn on for a woman is a man who can "protect her." The wallet has of course replaced the savage club in the cave.
As Women Grow Older They Orgasm More Easily. This Is The Little Know "Trap" That Often Leads To Illicit Affairs
One of the problems with hectic modern living is that it leaves no opportunity for quality time between a man and his woman and when there are brief moments, the couple prefers to fight over among other things, (you guessed it) money. So what happens is that the woman is left unfulfilled. She does not feel protected and neither does she feel loved. What then would you expect to happen if some workmate starts paying just a little attention to her?
But it gets worse. Studies have shown that as a woman grows older, it becomes much easier for her to orgasm during sex. Now suppose the husband does not have the time nor interest to bring about this happy situation? And even if he did, the bedroom fights (where else and what other time is there to fight) usually get in the way. Contrast that to the excitement of cheating on her spouse, and the total interest and devotion she hungers for that is being given by somebody else and you will begin to understand why cheating spouses are growing so rapidly in number the world over. Ever wondered why the TV show, Desperate Housewives has struck a chord with so many women? Watch it one of these days and you'll understand. We even have very popular cheating spouse surveillance TV shows where you and the whole world get to spy and finally catch your spouse cheating.
Men Are Not Only Cheating Spouses But Many Are Also Sex Addicts
Things are the same with the man. The wife no longer treats him the same as when they were courting or before marriage (which is mainly his fault only that he doesn't know it. Its' his fault because women respond very quickly to attention and how they are treated. Yet the man assumes because he told her he loves her once, she does not need to be told again and again).
Usually matters are made worse for the man because in his desperation for sexual satisfaction he looks for it in the physical rather than emotionally. Sex was great with the woman when she was a girl friend, because his heart was involved. He loved her—or at least he thought he did. Now in marriage and in the absence of that "love" the man goes physical. The result is that men ask their wives to do all sorts of things including going down on them. And when the wife refuses or doesn’t do such a good job, naturally the man will seek his pleasures elsewhere.
Interestingly this situation has turned too many men into sex addicts. You’ll find them spending hours on porn sites. Spouse cheating online and with the use of chat software has become rampant. But if you are one of these men the critical question is; have you noticed that you never get enough? Have you observed that you are always looking for more? Take some friendly advice from a stranger who knows; you need help. Cheating spouse support groups are not the joke everybody makes them out to be.
Sex was never meant to happen anywhere else apart from in your heart buddy and that can’t happen at those online sites and chat that zero in on the physical act.
Interestingly we are also now starting to see women who are making the same mistake as men on the physical thing. One of them in a case I came across used a carrot on herself and hurt herself badly in her sexual addiction that drove her to want to orgasm as frequently as possible. I kid you not.
That's really the crux of the cheating spouses crisis that we face today. It is a serious crisis that should be discussed openly and much more frequently. And the solution is not just surveillance or a private investigator cheating spouse service.

Arsenal Fan Caused Marsabit Air Crash
Exactly one year ago today, a military aircraft plunged into a hill in Marsabit and killed several people including six legislators on a peace mission among them assistant minister in the president's office, Mirugi Kariuki.
To date, the government is yet to explain to the widows of the victims what transpired during that cold rainy morning in Marsabit, seconds before the plane was scheduled to touch down ahead of the peace meeting that was to bring together members of the warring communities in Moyale and Marsabit.
However, initial reports pointed towards pilot error as visibility was so poor that a crew member who survived said he had expected the plane to turn back and abort landing since heavy fog had restricted visibility to a few meters. It was also well known that the Marsabit air strip had a tricky approach with hills surrounding the place.
Astonishingly, the pilot of the ill fated plane is said to have entered a bar in Eastlands a day before the flight and consumed alcohol for several hours as he watched English football and his favourite team Arsenal. He left the bar shortly after 2 a.m., six hours before the flight.
It is therefore in order to assume that he flew drunk or with a serious hangover in complete disregard of his sensitive job. It is obvious that alcohol clouded his decisions which cost the lives of several people including his own.
The military conducted a full scale investigation as is mandatory with all air crashes but it's findings will most probably never be made public considering the fact that the armed forces usually shrouds all its activities in secrecy.
This was the worst air disaster involving a military aircraft and it also raised questions of how serviceable our military planes are especially when you take into consideration recent budget cuts in the armed forces not to mention the condition of many of the 'obsolete' planes some which were dished out as gifts by Westren countries years ago.
Anyway, the public has a right to know what transpired that fateful morning and who or what should be held responsible for it so as to ensure it never happens again.
Unfortunately, the minister of defense is one Njenga Karume who has his hands full of political utensils as he is a key member of the Kibaki kitchen cabinet and the Marsabit disaster will never be among his list of priority items hence Kenyans will never probably never know for sure what transpired.

Michuki’s Blunders On Mt Elgon
Mount Elgon has become so volatile that contingent's of para-military
Units, and the police have failed to stop the killings being undertaken by the so-called fierce Sabaot land defense force.
The tough talking minister for security John Michuki has not even bothered to visit the area and prefers to make statements from the confines of parliament or his secured Harambee house office.
Yet it will not cost too much for the minister to visit the area and assure the people that the government was doing everything to stop the human butchering activities there where even women and children are not spared.
With resources at his disposal, Me-chuki could fly there in a police or military helicopter and convene a meeting with the locals and be back in his plush residence near Windsor golf and country club before sunset.
But the fire spitting minister has instead taken a swipe at the media accusing it of claiming the government was doing nothing over the clashes yet several security personnel had been deployed to the area to quell the situation.
Michuki should have resigned a long time ago. In fact soon after the raid on Standard newspapers premises or better still Kibaki should have sacked him, but he didn't. It is reasons like this that make the Kibaki administration unpopular and increase the chances of the opposition forming the next government.
Kibaki might not care whether he wins re-election or not but he should be concerned about the legacy he intends to leave behind and should tackle the tribalism and nepotism problem that is deeply entrenched in his government and perpetuated by people like Michuki who ensured his son in law, Mutahi Kagwe was appointed minister after Dr Chris Murungaru was dropped.

Foreigners Who Will Influence The Outcome Of Elections '07
Few political analysts are yet to realize this, but never in the history of Kenyan elections have the stakes been so high for virtually all concerned.
My condolences to those Kenyans who naively think that foreign powers are not an influencing factor in election outcomes, because I am going to be talking a lot about foreign influence in this post.

Shall we start with the incumbent? Ailing, aging President Kibaki certainly does not want to be the first Kenyan president to be removed by the electorate. Moi was not removed; remember? He retired and it was Kanu which was in the cold only briefly and now its' members are back in government at the heart of Kibaki's so-called government of national unity. President Kibaki cannot afford to lose these elections also because time has been too short. He started his administration when he was ill and spent the first three years trying to settle in with LDP troubles and the death of his first Vice president, dealing him a terrible blow. He needs 5 more years to do what he really intended to do in his first term. He seems to have made a deal with the Americans to deal firmly with terror suspects in return for a more sympathetic Washington ear. Already this seems to be working, but most analysts are convinced that the Americans are not comfortable with a Kibaki government, especially because of his most recent close ally, China. But Kibaki\s biggest worry is that the British are openly hostile after losing a lot of traditional government business to the Japs and the Chinese. Historically no Kenyan president has ever won an election without the support of the British.
Former President Moi is a worried man. There are those who say that he amassed more wealth during his reign that what the late President Mobutu Sese Seko of mineral rich Congo managed to put away in Swiss accounts. But one wrong move and his twilight years could turn into a nightmare. Of all elections Moi has been involved in during his long years in politics, this is one that he cannot afford to lose. That's why to make sure, the so-called professor of politics has no less than 2 horses in contention, with a possible third in the wings. Unknown to many Kenyans, Moi is one of Kalonzo Musyoka's main advisors. And what a difference that advice has made. Raila was just about to run away with the ODM party nomination for President after a carefully orchestrated consensus session when a Moi-orchestrated coup saw all major presidential candidates boycotting a major London session that was supposed to be a bonding session even as ODM seals its' choice of presidential candidate. Kalonzo also stood his ground and refused to leave ODM. Moi does not mind Kalonzo Musyoka being the ODM presidential candidate after all Musyoka is on record as having publicly told the Kalenjin community that he will protect them from "controversies of the past." In simple English that means that he will protect Moi and Biwott's ill gotten wealth as well as that of a handful of other prominent members of the Kalenjin tribe. Interestingly Moi is closer to the Americans currently than he ever was during his presidency. The reason is simple, Moi is the perfect tool in American hands for them to exert their influence without anybody knowing what is going on, because he is as powerful as ever in today's Kenya. Wily Moi on the other hand is looking for certain guarantees and assurances from the Americans for himself and his children long after he's gone. It is instructive that Moi can still get a visa to travel to the United States and Britain while virtually all his henchmen including Nick Biwott and Joshua Kulei cannot. Moi does not mind a Kibaki victory and neither does he mind a Kalonzo one—that is two horses in the race. But then there is a Kanu candidate coming up as well whose main aim will be to take away as many votes as possible from a Raila candidature. One can' be too careful f you are Moi.
The only ODM presidential candidate who has attracted significant foreign interest and from an unlikely source, is Raila Odinga. It is clear that the South Africans are ready at any time to open their wallets to fund the Langata MPs presidential campaign. The South Africans see themselves as the sole major super power on the continent and now have vast interests to protect as well as a lengthy agenda to implement. They also have national security issues that force them to be very interested in supervising proceedings on the rest of the continent. It is now whispered that Raila Odinga did not in fact pay for the expensive ads that appeared on DSTV late last year, causing such a stir locally and abroad. So who picked up the tab for the ads? Difficult to say but you can start looking in the country where DSTV is headquartered. You guessed it, South Africa. More recently there is this South African Millionaire that is said to be very keen on financing ODM-Kenya. The problem is that everybody forgets or does not know that he is very close to the government and has been used in the past for special covert missions. This is one presidential election that Raila cannot afford to lose. Age is catching up and it is clearly now or never. That is why it does not really matter who the ODM nominee is, either way, one thing you can be sure of is that Raila is standing for president this time round. The Americans don't like him because they have bitter memories of his father's close links to the Soviets. The British do not know quite what to make of him, but they too mistrust him. Foreign powers like nothing better than people they can analyze and compartmentalize neatly for those lengthy memos back home. Unfortunately Raila cannot be compartmentalized. Went to school in the former Eastern Europe and although he claims to be a democrat, ODM Kenya strongly resembles the all-inclusive Communist party that took over from the Bolsheviks in Russia.

Foreign Influence in the Kenyan Elections 2007: The Most Likely Scenario
Foreign governments will hardly call press conferences to announce their favored presidential candidates in an election but you can be sure that there is currently frantic activity and less of lazy golf playing afternoons in Nairobi diplomatic circles.
The British are keen to regain their lucrative government contracts as well as secure certain other national interests that have not been served well under President Kibaki. However these guys are also best known for their practical approach to matters, they are not as reckless as the Americans. I therefore expect that there should be intense horse trading currently going on over what a second Kibaki administration would yield. At the same time the British are also quietly talking to at least one other major opposition candidate. Then there is the British secret weapon if Kibaki handlers don't play ball. It is called John Githongo and the Anglo Leasing dossier.
The Americans have already cut a deal with the incumbent but the situation is clearly still very fluid and anything can happen. Their future move depends a lot on what happens with ODM-Kenya and if they will manage to stay intact and field a single presidential candidate. The Americans will be much more comfortable if that candidate is not Raila Odinga.
The truth is that the Yankees don't see any long-term concrete benefits from a continued no-clear-policy Kibaki administration. Naturally the number one concern of Washington are the suspected Al Quaeda terrorist cells in the country that the Kibaki administration does not seem to be too concerned about, even when there is increased evidence of the emergence of Islamic fundamentalism in previously quite and peaceful places like Mombasa and Lamu.
The South Africans have the kamikaze approach of siding with the man they believe will be the next president of Kenya. Although they can always deny everything later if things turn out differently because the guy talking to ODM is a private businessman. Huh!
China tend to do their things a little differently, their entire foreign policy closely revolves around expanding trade and finding markets for their rapidly expanding manufacturing base. Relations have never been warmer with Kenya and Bejing will be rooting for a Kibaki re-election. After all they are no strangers to aging leaders. Any other victory in December 2007 will certainly put back great gains made over the last two years or so.
