When vice president Moody Awori spoke yesterday on the seemingly minor point of his co chair on the constitutional reform team, murmurs rent the air. Members of the opposition made it very clear that they were not comfortable with justice minister Martha Karua as vice chair.
Marakwet MP, the striking Linah Chebii Kilimo did not mince her words and feelings about Karua and said outrightly that Karua was arrogant and there was no where the talks were headed for if she deputized for Awori.

Caustic Mbita MP Otieno Kajwang who has little time for Karua also spelt doom for the talks if Karua chaired some of the sessions and accused her of having little time for the opposition.
It is an open secret that Karua hates Raila Odinga with a passion yet the maverick Langata legislator is a member of the crucial team and is expected to make plenty of contributions that are bound not augur well with the government side.
During the final days of the 'bomas constitutional talks', Karua is said to have lost her head and literally went for Raila's throat and called him an 'uncircumcised boy' for misleading Kenyans about the draft.
The photo that went round the world. KissFM breakfast queen Caroline Mutoko and comedian Nyambane get the “daggers” look from tough cookie constitutional affairs minister Martha Karua when going for a hearing in which the Minister accused the trio of defamation in 2004.
However, over the past few months, especially after Karua was appointed justice minister, she has worked hard to re-package herself and is 'less bitchy' and seems to tolerate dissenting voices without becoming abrasive and abusive.
In fact her character has changed so much that Kenyans have almost forgotten her sexual escapade on the back seat of her official car that ended up badly as they were caught in the act by gangsters who robbed Hon Karua of Sh 12,000 and gold earrings.
Sections of the gutter press claimed that she had also been raped. However none of my impeccable sources have been able to confirm this and it was probably just pure speculation because many carjackings these days end up in rape.
However sources confirm to this blogger that Ms Karua has stuck to her man and still travels on weekends around golf courses with Father John Wamugunda who is a lecturer at Nairobi University and was appointed director of the Postal Corporation of Kenya. He is a catholic priest.
The 'tough' Karua took kiss 100 radio station to court for defamation over the Wamugunda affair but withdrew the case when she was appointed justice minister to replace the then embattled Kiraitu Murungi who was facing corruption allegations.
Majority of Kenyans do not have any confidence in Karua making any positive impact in the delivery of any constitutional amendments ahead of the forthcoming general elections. She has often taken a hardliner hence chances of getting a new document during her watch at the justice and constitutional affairs ministry is a very long shot indeed.

As a nation herded to abyss by selfish polticians, we seem to be bellitle history at the most expensive price. The government is not made of fools and given they had to think and act fast to deflate the opposition's balloon.
ReplyDeleteAnd the opposition always fall prey to cheap tricks. Any average Kenyan must have smelt a rotting rat miles away when the governement unexpectedly announced a climbdown on reforms. We seem never to tire from going around circles of infinite circumference.
All these tricks only succeed in painting our polticians in their true colours as unrivalled self-seekers. They change colour and tune with the plastic hope to reap fast political miles. But alas, they soon meet their selfish matches and the game starts all over again as they cry wolf and shout themseleves silly with meaningless platitudes.
Kenyans must teach these scoundrells an everlasting lesson. Their career as war and hate mongers must be ended this December an dnot letter. Lest we do that I fear we are in for a very unpleasant collective jouney to national destruction. The 9th parliament is a disgrace to say the least and for lack of a more acidic tag.
Ms Karua is only doing what she knows best, dancing lame for political expediency. But blaming her in isolation is not only unfair but attacking the symtom while the cancer of lack of national leadership mutates within. Show me an objective MP in the present parliament and I will spell for you what an angel represents.
Our upcoming elections are critical in the sense that we need to elect leaders who can perform the function of presentation and making sure the constituents concerns are addressed. There are many changes that need to take place to make sure Kenya is heading in the right direction, we are not perfect society but we must learn from past mistakes in order to secure a better future.
ReplyDeleteMost if not all our politicians keep looking for issues to give them political mileage and relevance. The constitutional review is one of those issues. All our leaders lack integrity and we Kenyans are always dancing to their tune.We rejected a draft which was offering us a cake and we are now settling for crumps.Shame on us!! We have to start playing the tune for the politicians to dance to if this country of ours can go anywhere. Most of these leaders have very little to show in terms of the leadership that they have offered to their respective constituents. All we see is their games at strategizing themselves to be as close to the center of power as possible. They don't care for Wanjiku. They care for their large stomachs which keep enlarging requiring more and more...If every politician did their fair share of work in their constituent we would be far in development goals.
ReplyDeleteThough i don't agree or condone certain actions of minister Karua i must say she was able to stand her ground when being interviewed by BBC and she made me proud to be a Kenyan and a woman at that.Very few male ministers could have braved that very vicious interview.
I do not care much for Karua however I'm still not quite sure how a discussion on her incompetence at chairing "this thing of ours" turned out to her sexual exploits.
ReplyDeleteWhat sickens me most is that you somehow present her possible "rape story" as a point against her.
Not to be a critic, but I'm sure you will agree with my sentiments when you do a read-over of your article one more time.
Still, great site and interesting read.
As Olwash points out, the discussion seems to have started and ended on one Martha Karua's suitability to steer the constitutional talks committee.
ReplyDeleteWhy her 'love life' becomes an issue beats me... I detest that kind of slant... Please avoid sensationalism if you want sustained respectability/credibility of the views that you post in your blog.
Do you for instance have your facts right? You say: "...sexual escapade on the back seat of her official car..."
I am not sure that is what was going on at the time taht carjackers caught up with the duo, and this is first time I am hearing of that version of events... I can neither dispute nor confirm.
And was it Martha's car that the lovebirds were riding? All information in public domain that I have seen/heard, until I saw your post indicates that having dismissed her driver and guard with her official vehicle, Martha and Dominic were riding in the latter's RAV4... (The one reason the said 4X4 started being referred to by some Kikuyus as 'Ka-Wagunda')
Facts! Facts! Please try and thrive on them.
Note correction in the line from the post above:
ReplyDelete"(The one reason the said 4X4 started being referred to by some Kikuyus as 'Ka-Wamugunda')"
What has martha karua's busting in wamugumda's Rav4 (I am laughing at the lies that they were having sex in a government car) have to do with her inability to co chair the talks. I am an avid crusader of minimum reforms but some comments make us want to chamge our minds. Raila Odinga's supporters think the review is about them and their raila. what the fucking crap does Martha's hatred of raila have to do with who chairs the talks? I know many kenyans supporting minimum reforms but they hate Raila many many times more than Karua does.raila Odinga will be in those talks representing his constituents and his party, nothing more nothing less. He is a participant like everybody else and if Martha should not chair just because she hates raila should ship out from the committee. I personally think the talks should be chaired by the president through his deputy Moody Awori and the leder of opposition in kenya Uhuru Kenyatta. But please dont try to reduce kenyans into brainless supporters of raila odinga. We are too big for that.
ReplyDeleteHere are some facts for you;
ReplyDeleteWhat was Martha Karua and father Wamugunda doing at the back of Father W's car past midnight?
a) Having ice-cream.
b) Discussing a contribution to the Catholic church.
c) Doing what 2 consenting adults would do at the back of a car at midnight in some deserted road.
You should also know that rumour has it that the guys who attacked Karua were hired by Raila Odinga. The man couldn't take the insults that the woman threw at him at Bomas. The kindest of which was the fact that he still carries around his foreskin. And "yes" rape DID take place.
