Thank You Charity Ngilu, For Telling Us The Truth
A journalist asked the rather attractive Minister whether it was true that Kibaki made a solemn vow to serve only for one term. Ngilu did not mince her words. She said that the President did in fact make such a vow to colleagues in her hearing. She however quickly added that he had a right to change his mind if he felt that circumstances had changed since he made his promise.
She then ruled out the possibility of her joining Narc Kenya. "That is DP and they cannot pretend to be anything else." Ngilu was referring to the Kikuyu party known as Democratic Party of Kenya which president Kibaki launched in Mombasa the day he resigned his health ministry portfolio in the Moi government on Christmas day 1991. Ngilu added that she was talking to various political parties in the hope of reviving a strong Narc alliance ahead of the forthcoming general elections. She even invited the president to join the alliance in his bid for re-election.
These cheeky remarks are Ngilu's trademark and the iron lady of Kenyan politics who still holds the distinction of being the only woman to stand for the highest office in the land (Wangari Mathai withdrew from the presidential race in the same year at the eleventh hour and did not even win the Tetu parliamentary seat in that election—1997) used those remarks to confirm the truth to Kenyans in a subtle but very effective way. This was much more convincing than the malicious statements full of emotion issued by the likes of Raila Odinga. Ngilu just stated the facts and even defended the right of the president to change his mind.
So why did President Kibaki have to lie to Kenyans and the world? Why did he not just say that he had changed his mind about seeking a second term because in his view circumstances were now different? If the president could tell a lie over such a minor issue where the truth would have done just as well, what else has he lied to Kenyans about in the four years of this administration which has limped from one crisis to another? Could Anglo Leasing be in the list of lies that he has told? That scandal which the president's supporters do not want mentioned and get very upset when the name of John Githongo comes up. Why do we want to pretend that it never happened?
From the support that the president is enjoying so far, it is clear that he is a Kikuyu candidate. Is the Kikuyu community telling us that they do not mind sending a liar back to State house as long as he is one of their own? Does Kenya not deserve better? It is rapidly emerging that even Raila will not do because of various broken promises of his own (see earlier articles in this blog).
This blog will continue to push for a fresh start where Kenyans should elect 210 fresh new faces that have never been to parliament before, even for the presidency. It is the only chance we have to truly get the genuine change we seek. Oh and about lack of experience, surely we can do without the sort of experience we have been voting to parliament. Namely experience in looting public funds, experience in lying without blinking and in experience in breaking promises and shattering dreams. For better or for worse Kenyans should try something totally new and different this time round.

Nicholas Biwott: Why Has He Prospered Under The Kibaki Administration?
Many Kenyans had already written the Keiyo South MP's political and business obituary the day Narc and president Kibaki dramatically swept into power on that memorable December day in 2002. Instead Biwott has not only survived politically and stayed out of prison, but his empire has expanded and prospered even more than t did in the Moi days.
Insiders now reveal that Biwott started talking to the Narc government before the actual general elections when it looked clear that the coalition was headed for victory. But his campaign for favor did not end there. Observant Kenyans will remember that in the early days of the Narc administration, Biwott stuck to then Minister in charge of Internal security Chris Murungaru like a leech. Reviewing TV clips of Murungaru, Biwott was constantly close to the powerful minister in the Kibaki administration. And whatever deals he was so eager to strike, he must have succeeded because as you read this Biwott's flagship Kenol/Kobil companies have won lucrative government contracts including the most recent one worth billions of shillings to supply fuel to all Kengen electricity generating plants in the country.
It is now clear why Biwott was once referred to by Moi as his Kirigit. In the Turgen language this means the bull that leads the other cows home. It is also clear why Biwott was so successful as the main brains behind the Moi administration.
Interestingly insiders further whisper that one of the first things Biwott did to win favor was to pay all back taxes and effectively cleared his name from the black list at KRA, literally overnight. Considering the fact that Biwott was a sacred cow during the entire 24 years of the Moi administration, he must have paid the equivalent of the American national debt in taxes to the KRA. Little wonder that his flagship Kenol/Kobil group has consistently won KRA awards for being amongst the highest tax remitters in the republic ever since the award was introduced early in the Kibaki administration.
Biwott has gone on to make some smart moves to insulate himself against possible future purges against him and his vast business empire built and established through corruption and the looting of public coffers. For instance Kenol/Kobil is now in Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and most recently Ethiopia. So even if somebody were the freeze Biwott's assets in Kenya, it will be easy for him to survive by continuing to operate his interests outside the country.
Kenyans will remember that there was even talk at one point of Biwott joining the Kibaki cabinet of national unity. He ended up missing that by a whisker. Thanks mainly to a handful of Kenyans who refused to forgive and forget the past.
So as Kenyans prepare to vote later this year, the big question they should ask themselves is why the hell they should expect changes when people like Nicholas Biwott are still so influential and powerful in the country. Let's stop being naïve and face up to the fact that by re-electing the current government and the Narc-Kenya outfit back to power, we will by extension be voting for Nicholas Biwott to retain his power and influence. Count me out of such a move.
No Kenyan in the history of the nation has been linked to so many un-solved murders. Top on the list is the still un-solved brutal murder of the best foreign minister Kenyan ever had, the late Dr Robert John Ouko. No Kenyan in the history of Kenya has been linked to so many scandals and dirty deals. The tentacles of Biwott are said to spread into drugs. At one point he was even linked to a lucrative prostitution ring at the Coast that served mainly American sailors.
It got so bad that at one point Biwott protested jokingly (by the way does the man ever laugh?) that even when couples have domestic squabbles in the privacy of their bedrooms, they somehow manage to pin the blame on Biwott.
But on a more serious note, this kind of image amongst Kenyans is not without reason. Other presidents have had their powerful ministers who have inevitably been linked to all sorts of evils. But Biwott has easily made the likes of Mbiyu Koinange (from the Kenyatta days) and Chris Murungaru (from the early Kibaki administration) look like Mother Teresa in comparison. A vote for President Kibaki will be a resounding vote for Nicholas Biwott this December. Don't forget that.

Gicheru Ignores Tribalism And Nepotism As He Prepares To Launch Second Purge On The Judiciary
When the NARC government came to power, the then justice minister Kiraitu Murungi exerted his influence during the appointment of new judges to the effect that about fifty percent of them come from the Mount Kenya region or the Kikuyu tribe.
Adding insult to injury, most of those appointed had never been heard of before in the 'legal world' as they were small time lawyers struggling to make ends meet and desperately needed a lucrative job in the 'bench'.
A case in point is justice Mary Mugo. A wife to a former Kenya Airways executive, John Mugo who died in a plane crash in Ivory coast years ago, the lady justice was virtually unknown but due to her connection with the powers that be, was appointed to the bench with several other inexperienced and unknown lawyers.
She is currently grappling with a civil suite where a city lady is accusing her of attacking her and causing her serious bodily harm during a private party in Nairobi two years ago. The complainant is asking for hundreds of thousands of shillings in damages as her ear lobe was ripped off and she had to seek medical attention including reconstructive surgery at the Nairobi hospital.
Having been a neighbor for a number of years to the Mugo's at Akiba estate in South C several years ago, the assault accusations did not come as a surprise to me as the late Mugo, was often on the receiving end of these violent outbursts on several occasions. The daily fights had their toll on their young daughter whom doctors diagnosed with ulcers while she was at the tender age of 7 or thereabouts.
It is therefore interesting that persons with such pasts are now senior judicial officers with immense powers and responsibilities and were appointed to these positions because of ethnicity and not competence. It is such issues that Gicheru has to deal with very seriously in his second purge.
Justice Gicheru was perhaps the best suited candidate for the chief justice position but again, the nepotism and tribalism accusations are being perpetrated by members of his Kikuyu community and he might find it extremely difficult to deal with it and may otherwise chose to ignore the problem.
All said and done, the biggest blunder committed during the appointment of the judges was failure on the government's part to thoroughly scrutinize the history and lifestyles of those who had been short listed for the coveted posts.
Purge or no purge, the judiciary will continue being the laughing stock of lawyers and other stakeholders in the know if the government does not take action against officers like Justice Mugo who are more of liabilities rather than assets to the judicial system where integrity and probity counts for everything.

Rift Valley Fever Spins Way Out Of Control In Kenya As Deaths Reach 139 And Still Counting
Just focus on that number, 139 for a moment. Those are the number of deaths so far. 139 people can hardly be accommodated in most homes, standing space only. This is a huge number that tells you this Rift Valley thing is an epidemic of unprecedented proportions that is swiftly sweeping across the nation of Kenya and leaving death in its' path.
In spite of several awareness campaigns by the government that meat inspected by veterinary personnel and stamped fit for consumption is okay to eat, locals are not taking any chances and have chosen to stop eating beef altogether along with cow milk as the disease is known not to have a cure.
About 482 cases have been reported since the outbreak sometime early December last year in the rift valley but again many more cases went unreported as infected persons did not seek attention from health institutions and opted for traditional herbs, a common way of treatment for the pastoral community who are the worst affected.
The situation seems to have worsened and led to a joint press conference yesterday between the ministry of health and that of livestock development with the two minister's, Charity Ngilu and Joseph Munyao respectively trying to reassure Kenyans that everything was under control.
All these assurances seem to have fallen on deaf years as Kenyans are avoiding meat roasting joints like Kenyatta market like the plague and are opting for chicken and fish which are currently experiencing a boom never mind the fact that reports of bird flu have retuned with a vengeance and the first death on African soil in Nigeria was recently announced.
Most butcheries in the country have experienced an almost 50% reduction in beef meat sales since the year began while others have chosen to temporarily shut down until the disease disappears. But surprisingly, the price of beef has not gone down as expected.
RVF is a disease that is transmitted by animals through the eating of meat or drinking of milk from an infected animal but according to experts, if the meat is boiled above 100 degrees centigrade, it is safe.
It has no known cure and its' exact origins are also scanty with experts saying it was first detected in the rift valley hence the name. Most of the victims are members of the pastoral community who are known to consume lots of un-inspected meat. There is a crazy unverified theory that it may have been "introduced" by American covert agents trying to deal a major deathblow on Al Queada cells within neighboring Somalia by crippling their main source of livelihood, which is livestock. However the virus easily sneaked into Kenya where herds are much more vulnerable to disease. It is widely know that deadly viruses are these days "grown" in labs all over the Western world. Is it just a coincidence that American viral experts were the first to jet into the country to help control the spread of the disease when it was first reported late last year?
Symptoms include fever, weakness in joints and bleeding from every orifice and finally a painful death. Though it has no known cure, meat lovers like the Maasai are still consuming large quantities of un-inspected beef and surprisingly only two cases have so far been reported in Kajiado.

Raila Swears With The Holy Bible That Kibaki Is Lying About One Term Promise
Asking God to help him after the swearing ceremony caught on local television, Raila stepped down only to confirm what millions of Kenyans have feared over the past month. Their 'gentleman' president has now turned into a liar who seems to have been affected by power as is normally the case among ordinary mortals.
I remember well that prior to the historical 2002 polls, the media clearly reported that the coalition had reached an agreement where Kibaki would be its presidential candidate who would serve for only one term to put the country in sound economic footing then step aside for the affable, late vice president, Wamalwa Kijana.
But if one puts himself in Kibaki's shoes you will understand why he has changed his mind and reneged on the earlier agreement he made with his coalition partners. For starters, Kijana died and the coalition is no more, but most important of all, Kibaki has now tasted power, which is more addictive than crack cocaine. And as they say power corrupts but absolute power (especially of the kind the President of Kenya enjoys) corrupts absolutely.
For a man of Kibaki's stature to stand up in public and lie before millions of Kenyans and TV camera's, one is left wondering what happened to the soft spoken steadfast gentleman who was known for his pursuits for the truth and justice.
One cannot blame it all on power that has gone to his head but also on his arrogant and selfish advisors and henchmen who are immensely benefiting from his presidency and there is no way they could have allowed him to step down after only one term.
These are the likes of Eddy Njoroge, Joe Wanjui, Njenga Karume, Solomon Karanja, Nathaniel Kang'ethe and his domineering permanent secretary for policy and strategy, Stanley Murage who is said to have made a fabulous fortune as a result of his closeness to Kibaki.
God should help Kibaki from his friends whom he knows not unlike his enemies whom he knows very well and keeps a safe distance from. The president's so-called friends are always hovering around him like flies on human waste and will most probably cost him the presidency in the forthcoming general elections.

Crime And Death Go Overboard In Nairobi As Rumors Of Ethiopian Hit Squad Refuses To Go Away
The fear is of course justified. It seems that carjackers and armed gunmen have not only suddenly greatly increased in number but their objectives seem to have changed from stealing cars at gunpoint to shooting as many motorists as possible, dead.
Sample the following two incidents.
Early last week some American Christian volunteers were in a car somewhere near Naivasha waiting for a colleague when armed gunmen pounced on them and shot them dead. They did not even end up stealing the car but instead disappeared into a nearby bush.
In yet another incident in Kiserian, Nairobi, carjackers shot dead at least 5 motorists in three different vehicles before they finally entered into one of the vehicles and made good their escape.
The pattern is the same in almost all the incidents. It seems that the whole idea is to cause death and as much of it as possible.
This latest development is not only worrying but unprecedented. So who is deliberately causing death and what is the objective?
One persistent rumour has been doing the rounds in Nairobi for weeks now, to the effect that there is an Ethiopian hit squad on the loose in the city and their operations are extending to a few other parts of the country outside the city in the sun. This rumour does not make sense. But then the truth usually hardly makes any sense until one is able to gather all the facts. We know for a fact that Ethiopians have recently been in the headlines for their invasion of Somalia where they ousted the Islamic Courts government that was not only rapidly gaining more power by the day in the whole battle torn country, but was also a serious threat to the stability of the entire horn of Africa region with the expansionist policies they seemed to promote. Thinly veiled threats had already been made against the Kenyan government by the Islamic Courts administration.
But what would Ethiopian hit squads be doing in Nairobi? What are they intentions? What is their mission all about? The questions these rumours raise are numerous and many more than can be answered, at least at the moment.
This writer sees three other highly likely reasons for the indiscriminate killings in Nairobi. To start with, nobody really wants to even think about it, but chances are high that remnants of the Islamic courts that were ousted in Somalia are already testing the waters through insurgents who have infiltrated the country. They have plenty of reason to hit out at Kenya and Kenyans, the first on the list is the fact that the previously highly porous borders have now been sealed off and many of them have been deported back to the very country they are fleeing for their lives from. If this is true, then why hasn't anybody started claiming responsibility for the acts of terror against innocent Kenyans? Or are they simply waiting to graduate to bigger operations and then do so?
The second possibility is that the whole thing could be part of a covert operation by the Americans to cause chaos and give them a good enough excuse (and the Kenyan government enough encouragement) to allow a full blown mop up exercise at Nairobi's notorious Eastleigh estate. There is little doubt that this estate which is one of the most dangerous localities in East Africa outside Mogadishu itself, may have been infiltrated by Al quieda cells ready to strike at American interests in the region at any time. Already it is common knowledge that even heavily armed policemen will go out of their way to avoid reading anywhere near Eastliegh. We of course have to thank the administration of former President Moi for the mess in Eastleigh. Somalis, most of them foreigners and yet pretending to be Kenyan Somalis just waked in and quickly bribed their way into the country. Many of them obtained Kenyan IDs and passports. Others have not even bothered but run all sorts of businesses in the country with the full privileges a local would have.
The third possibility is that it is all linked to the forthcoming elections. The whole idea is to cause chaos and fear in a bid to keep voters firmly on the government side, if they know what is good for them. This would be in following the now long tradition of having so called land clashes flaring up every time there is a general elections in the horizon. Immediately the elections are over the clashes usually vanish only to re-appear on the eve of the next elections. It happened in 1991/2, 1996/7, 2001/2 and it has happened again in 2006/7. This theory seems to be supported by the fact that it is rapidly emerging that Nairobi will be the kind of battle ground in the forthcoming general elections that could decide which direction the scales will tip in. And that is why there has been so much violence in the city this time round, from the Mathare clashes to the flare up in Kibera and now to indiscriminate killings on the streets.
The really worrying thing is that the killings are bound to get worse in the coming weeks.

…Could There Be A Hit Squad Link To The Strange Mombasa Explosion?
Two smartly dressed men walked into a scrap metal workshop and requested that a heavy piece of metal be sliced into two. They claimed that there was mercury inside the sealed piece of metal. What followed was horrific to say the least. No sooner had the eager jua Kali artisans started cutting through the strange metal, the object itself exploded dismembering the legs clean off the body of the person who was nearest at the time it went off. Yet another person was thrown high into the high and landed over 10 metres away. A huge hole was created on the spot by the explosion which was very loud and was heard for miles around. Residents in houses several metres away said that they felt an "earth tremor" at the time of the explosion. At least two people died as a result of this bizarre incident and others are fighting for their lives at the Coast General Hospital.
As usual security forces have remained tight-lipped but say that they are aggressively looking for the two men who brought the strange piece of metal to the yard. Judging from the description, chances are high that the piece of metal was in fact a mine. The sort of explosion a mine causes resembles the one that was described by eyewitnesses to the Kongowea incident.
But this raises other pertinent questions. Why would somebody give out a mine with such a cock and bull story that there was mercury inside, knowing full well that any effort to drill through would result in an explosion? Were they trying to eliminate somebody or were they simply conning some poor ignorant fellow out of their hard earned money?
Whatever the explanation, this incident should cause a lot of anxiety and concern to Kenyans. It clearly means that not only are automatic weapons and guns easily finding their way into the country, but now we also have dangerous explosives like mines also coming in. And all this is happening at a time when violent crime and killings have spun out of control.

Prof George Saitoti And His 9 Lives
Former vice president George Saitoti has surprised friend and foe over the years by his ability to weather the storm and bounce back to the center of things even after being dismissed as 'finished' by his numerous detractors.
This time round, the Topology professor has not only bounced back to the cabinet but has declared his interest to vie for the Narc-Kenya chairmanship and in effect going for the post of vice president to Kibaki.
Many say it is impossible to have a president and his deputy from the same community as both Kibaki and Saitoti are Kikuyu's but the latter poses as a Maasai and has literally discarded his kikuyu names, Kinuthia Muthengi.
Saitoti can not be easily dismissed for several reasons including the fact that he is fabulously wealthy and has his share of friends in high places with the ability to pull strings in his favor.
Among the other candidates going for the Narc chairmanship, Saitoti is the only one who enjoys some form of support countrywide as a result of serving as Moi's deputy for several years. It is this perceived countrywide popularity and clout that President Kibaki's handlers are salivating about and want t take full advantage of. Apart from the man's ill gotten wealth of course.
Many Kenyans also sympathise with Saitoti following the treatment he underwent in the hands of Moi who discarded him in the last minute and picked Uhuru Kenyatta as his successor.
In Kenya, the president does not have a running mate in elections and usually appoints his deputy after occupying state house which makes it possible to have Saitoti being given the number two slot to the chagrin of Moody Awori who has indicated he is not about to retire from politics in spite of being about 80 years old.
Another school of thought says that Kibaki's intention is to groom Saitoti to take over from him in 2012 so as to ensure he is protected along with his wealth and will not be subjected to any annoying investigations, especially the Anglo Leasing scandal which has rocked his administration.
Unfortunately Saitoti also has his own excessive baggage he has to deal with including his arrogant and short-tempered nature, which comes out often, like when he is confronted with questions from cheeky journalists.
Besides, all these intricate planning could be in vain if Kibaki and Narc-Kenya lose the forthcoming elections and if the past four years is anything to go by, the London School of Economics trained economist and his arrogant advisors will have a very difficult time making it back to State house.

Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission Lets Down Kenyans Yet Again
It is now common knowledge among Kenyans that sacred cows are still very much alive and well in this country despite the careless-whispers-sweet-nothing-promises the president made to Kenya during "courtship". We still live in a country where we are supposed to be proud to be Kenyans even as those involved in multi million shilling scandals go scot-free while petty offenders are the ones who face justice swiftly.
Yesterday, Ringera violently slapped Kenyans in the face yet again by clearing all the senior government officials including one cabinet minister from corruption allegations while recommending the prosecution of a mere chief for allegations of receiving a Shs 1,000 bribe.
If Kenyans had their way, Ringera himself would be investigated for corruption and double standards not to mention having him return the money he has received in salary and allowances from the time he took up the job.
Known for talking tough and failing to provide results, Ringera is among those who have tarnished the image of the Kibaki administration most by failing to prosecute those involved in high level corruption and choosing to instead chase traffic policemen soliciting Sh 50 bribes from motorists (as they try to copy their role models in government and the Kenya Anti Corruption Commission). Wrong as it is for a traffic policeman to solicit a shs 50 bribe, it hardly constitutes an economic crime, which is what Ringera was mandated to deal with. I stand to be corrected but if parliament passed the bill that created Ringera's job for him to chase 50-bob-bribes-traffic-policemen, then this parliament and the president who signed the bill into law should have their brains examined.
The usual story told to gullible Kenyans about the big fish is that corruption files have been released to the attorney general for prosecution only for the AG to say that they don’t have sufficient evidence to sustain prosecution.
Never mind the fact that Ringera is a former judge and should know whether the evidence before him is sufficient or not to sustain a prosecution prior to sending the files to the ever smiling AG who like Ringera, seems to have long reached his sell by date.

Government Promises Heaven On Earth As General Elections Beckon
Now the same corrupt government says it is formulating a policy for free secondary school education which is almost impossible considering that the education ministry is currently consuming almost 30% of the total budget.
Never mind, this is an election year and the government will soon provide heaven on earth for the 30 million plus population (70 per cent of them living below the poverty line.)
President Kibaki and his retinue of arrogant advisors are upbeat that the odds will tilt in their favor and the Othaya legislator will make it back to State house to finish his second term amid stiff resistance from a disjointed opposition.
Swimming in the glory of free primary education and the constituency development fund, the Kibaki administration is even talking of doubling the youth enterprise fund to Sh 2 billion next year.
But these promises are coming rather late in the day and Kenyans would prefer to see those involved in the multi million Anglo Leasing scandal convicted before the government disburses money to the youth to start their own businesses.
The government is stretched to unbearable limits as they still seek to deal with free primary education and making secondary school free is a most noble idea but it is practically impossible now.
When Kibaki and Narc took over in 2002, their signature tune was a corrupted gospel number, which said everything was possible without Moi but they are about to realize that not everything is possible with or without Moi.

The Promise Raila Will Never Keep: Can We Really Change Kenyan Politics?
This is a government that lies about corruption, about a new constitution, about taped evidence, about the economy, about its' true intentions and now wants even to fraudulently re-write history by erasing known facts and replacing them with lies and propaganda. But isn't that what Kenyan politics has always been about?
This is a fact that was recently clearly demonstrated when his excellency the President, a man who is respected, if for nothing else then for being the grand dad of a number of grand children, faced the world and told a white lie (albeit while blinking several times). Raila was one of the first to bring up the issue of Kibaki's careless-whispers-sweet-nothings-promises when he was actively seeking to be the united opposition's single presidential candidate in 2002.
Sadly the man who would have been at the forefront of exposing Baba Jimmy (Kibaki's eldest son answers to that name) is now dead. Former VP Michael Kijana Wamalwa however left adequate evidence on tape, and audible tape at that, to the effect that the game plan was for Kibaki, the oldest man in the group to go first and complete his 5 years and then leave the next 5 years to Wamalwa and so on and so forth. The whole truth and nothing but the truth is that what clinched Kibaki's pole position in this arrangement was the fact that the opposition needed to neutralize the massive Kikuyu vote that was destined for Uhuru Kenyatta, and the most effective way of doing that was to also choose a Kikuyu candidate to face the Kanu presidential nominee.
But this article is not about Baba Jimmy (sorry for getting carried away). It is in fact about our hero Raila Odinga.
Kenyans now need to ask themselves some sobering questions about Raila. In his swiftness to rightly judge the president, he should also face up to some very serious broken promises of his own.
Kenyans have conveniently forgotten about the murder of the late foreign minister Dr Robert Ouko and are really not interested in bringing the murderers to book. So the guys who tortured and shot the former minister continue to roam the streets and countryside and are in fact actively seeking to control the outcome of the forthcoming polls. But this is one murder that won't go away.
During the wedding last year of Dr Ouko's daughter to the son of legislator David Musila, Raila in a moment of compassion (widows always have that effect on you, don't they?) promised Christobel Ouko that he would not rest until the killers of her late husband are brought to book. That is one promise Raila has done very little to follow up on. Actually he has done nothing. And information reaching this writer from an impeccable source indicates that there is no way Raila will be able to deliver on this one unless he breaks other serious promises he made in the recent past.
I am informed that when Raila's NDP merged with Moi's Kanu in March 2002, one of the promises Moi made (which he later broke) to Raila was that he would support him to win the presidential nomination for Kanu in the elections later that year. In return Raila solemnly promised that he would never pursue the matter of Dr Ouko's murder. As a further reward, Raila became the joint owner with Moi of the Molasses plant in Kisumu. Yep, the very damned molasses plant that was one of the reasons that led to the gruesome murder of Dr Ouko. What I would call "blood property."
Little wonder that Raila is in the same parliament that had a widely publicized parliamentary select committee investigating the circumstances of Ouko's murder but which never concluded the matter in a manner that would have been satisfactory to the Kenyan people. And this is despite spending a fortune in taxpayer's money where the committee even sat in London. Raila's silence on the issue has been deafening.
This is just one more reason why Kenyans will this time be best advised to seek alternative leadership from a brand new group of personalities who have never previously been to this house of selfish dealmakers and broken promises. The current political elite holding all of us at ransom will call them inexperienced nobodies, but we the voters have the power to turn nobodies into somebodies and that is a message that we must make sure sinks deep into the minds and hearts of the political class this time round.

101 Immigration Excuses That A Kenyan Can Use To Avoid Deportation From The US
But it is also this noble group that has been partly responsible for making Mwai Kibaki look like a hero who turned around the Kenyan economy instead of the President under whose watch Anglo Leasing happened (the latest is that investigations are ongoing and are expected to be completed by the year 2050 or 2060… or 2070 at the very latest).
The truth is that mostly these illegal immigrants have worked like crazy and remitted billions of dollars back home for various personal development projects. The effect of this has been to buoy the Kenyan shilling like never before against major foreign currencies like the dollar. The government has never announced it but remittances by Kenyans overseas are now the number one foreign exchange earner beating tourism to second place by about 2 billion shillings.
But I digress.
A recent case where a fascinating defense was put against deportation by a Kenyan couple has given me a brilliant idea for a new book that will carry the title above. The Kenyan woman in the case has put up a spirited defense for the couple against deportation on the grounds that being returned to Kenya would expose her to a "well founded fear of persecution." Which in this case is FGM (female genital mutilation). Yep, female circumcision. The Kenyan lady who hails from the Kalenjin community told the court that she risked being forcibly circumcised by relatives and friends on returning to Kenya.
Now this has gotten me thinking and I am currently compiling a list of 101 immigration excuses to help avoid deportation from the US. So far my tentative list includes the following;
i) Forced FGM
ii) Dangers of being carjacked and killed in crime-prone Nairobi mainly for having an American accent which is supposed to mean that you have lots of dollars on you.
iii) Dangers of being kidnapped and robbed by your own starving jobless family members at the airport in a country where officially the economy is supposed to be growing at a rate that is close to that of China.
iv) Danger of being robbed and your wife raped at gun-point by relatives of the woman you used to stay with in Kenya over your re-marrying in the United States. Here you can quote the widely publicized case of Ngugi Wa Thiongo
v) Political persecution that has already been threatened by Michuki (remember the statement on "brog forums and FM stations" that were asked to tone down or else?) over the political blog you have been writing from the safe distance of the United States.
vi) If you are a Kyuk, fear of persecution from a possible ODM-Kenya Raila government caused by past sins of the Kikuyu against the Luo in Kenya.
vii) Real possibilities of starving to death in Nairobi because your current "profession" of bathing senior citizens in some home does not exist in Kenya which seems to have a 99.9 per cent unemployment rate.
viii) Fear over your life because you have announced in your blog (do not mention to the court the fact that traffic to your blog stands at about 2 unique visitors per week) that you might stand for president of Kenya and aides to President Mwai Kibaki shake in their boots when they hear your name being associated with running for the presidency.
ix) If you are a Luo male, fear of forcible circumcision, which is against your culture by rowdy matatu touts sent by your political enemies (Do not mention to the court under any circumstances that you are actually already circumcised and you did it to win the love of one Susan Njeeri Karanja of Texas).
x) Possible attack by Islamic court extremists who have sneaked into Kenya from Somalia after the recent invasion of that country by US backed Ethiopian troops. You would especially be vulnerable because you actually lived in the "country of the infidels" and must have therefore been recruited as a CIA agent.
xi) Real danger of murder from all those relatives in Kenya you never sent money to while you were in the US. The common belief amongst Kenyans is that dollars literally grow on a tree near you right across America and that is why Raila and Kalonzo are always rushing back to the US when they run out of campaign funds.
Other ideas are welcome. Just bear in mind that the Supreme court has explained that a fear of persecution may be "well founded" even when there is less than a 50 per cent chance that the act of persecution will take place. I am desperately trying to beat a deadline to have the book out and on sale by this summer.

Liar, Liar, Ngilu Screams At Kibaki as Head of State Disowns 2002 MOU
Last week she confirmed what the majority of Kenyans already know. That prior to the 2002 elections, Kibaki agreed with the top brass of NARC that he would serve only one term then step down to allow the late Wamalwa Kijana have a shot at the presidency.
Ngilu knows what she is talking about considering that the Narc alliance started with her, Kibaki and Wamalwa long before the others joined (including George "Goldenberg" Saitoti) ahead of the historical 2002 elections, which saw Kanu lose after ruling Kenya since independence in 1963.
Kibaki has insisted he was never involved in such an agreement and we will therefore seek re-election later this year. If he loses heavily as pundits are predicting, then one of the reasons will have to be because of his dishonesty. Sincerely, how can Kenyans trust a person who trashes an MOU and then goes on to lie about it.
Ngilu has been a thorn in the Kibaki administration ever since 2003 and has openly criticized the government she serves accusing it of tribalism, corruption and even nepotism but has never contemplated resigning and instead opted to fight from within. About the tribalism bit, in condemning it Ngilu seems to have also indulged heavily in it herself. One just needs to look at her list of appointees in the health Ministry—it reads like a who-is-who in Ukambani. Perhaps except for just one prominent non-Kamba name. That of one Tony Gachoka.
Gachoka is said to be Ngilu's secret lover and last year the pair were caught in a compromising position at the Parklands sports club car park in the back seat of Ngilu's Mercedes Benz. The poor watchman who caught the prominent couple was told off by Tony Gachoka whom it is claimed emerged from the vehicle zipping his pants and in a drunken stupor, ordering the guard to vanish and keep his mouth shut for his own good. Apparently, the guard did not keep his mouth shut and reported the matter to club authorities who withdrew Gachoka's membership for 'unacceptable behavior' to the chagrin of Ngilu who chose not to use her clout as a cabinet minister to interfere in the matter, for obvious reasons.
The two lovebirds have been so consistent with each other with Gachoka benefiting in a big way by securing a lucrative contract at the health ministry to ironically publicize an HIV/AIDS program on behalf of the government.
It was late last year that Gachoka joined ODM and toured central province with Raila Odinga in a futile bid to convince the Kikuyu to join the movement and abandon Narc-Kenya. He later declared interest to contest the Kamukunji parliamentary seat in the forthcoming elections.
If his influence on Ngilu extends to politics, it is just a matter of time before the health minister joins ODM but again, Ngilu treads cautiously on Raila's grounds and hardly trusts the maverick Lang'ata legislator.
The lady from Mbooni Machakos but who got married in Kitui has another option of forming a third force with like minded politicians like Musikari Kombo and those who will later break away from ODM after the nominations.
But being as unpredictable as they come, Ngilu could as well stay put with Kibaki and
strike a deal whereby she could be rewarded with a lot more besides a cabinet post if Narc-Kenya wins. She will however be well advised to note that history seems to suggest that its better to deal with the devil than with Kibaki when it comes to cutting pre-election deals.

Beware Of The Kenyan Press
Having worked for one of the leading daily papers in Kenya for over 15 years, it is my view that journalists are more corrupt than the police who usually emerge tops in the corruption list released annually to the chagrin of the civil service.
It is common practice that after attending a press conference hosted by a politician, white envelopes are passed around by the politicians' aides in the name of a press statement. However these envelopes could contain as little as Sh 1,000 or as much as Sh 10,000 depending on the gravity of the story the politician wants to appear in the media.
Other journalists are so aggressively crude that they demand bribes menacingly from politicians telling them there is no way he or she can get coverage unless he parts with 'something small' to oil his hands and those of his or her superiors. Kenya news agency and Kenya Broadcasting corporation journalists are notorious for this.
The mainstream newspaper journalists are more sophisticated in how they go about soliciting for bribes from top politicians and corporate executives and start off by 'digging for dirt' about their potential victims before calling them with the dossier for a comment. Predictably they end up being paid off handsomely to 'kill' certain unfavorable elements of the story.
The mark of corruption in media extends as high up the ladder as it can get and senior editors are known to be in the pockets of powerful politicians with the former briefing the latter on any negative story about him that lands in the newsroom.
A one time managing editor of the STANDARD, Kamau Kanyanga was in the pay roll of Kamlesh Pattni who is said to have rewarded him so handsomely that he built a palatial home in Ongata Rongai after he was finally fired from the newspaper for graft.
It is an open secret that Dennis Onyango of the STANDARD is on the payroll of Raila Odinga and briefs the Langata MP almost daily on stories sent to the newsroom that are critical of him. If Onyango is the seniormost editor in the newroom when the story arrives, he 'trashes' it then calls Raila.
The case is no different at Nation center, during Wilfred Kiboro's tenure as chief executive officer, a local company filed a civil suite against president Kibaki for failing to clear a debt while he was official leader of the opposition. STANDARD 'splashed' the story while Nation 'killed' it as Kibaki and Kiboro are known to be extremely good friends.
It is after this incident that Kenyans faith in the DAILY NATION started dropping while the star of its rival, STANDARD started rising as they got bolder in taking on the government of the day on pertinent issues like corruption and tribalism.
Politician Kenneth Matiba had at one time decided that journalist Mutegi Njau of the NATION was invaluable to him and decided to buy him a new car which he quickly sold off so as not to attract any attention from his superiors.
Then there is the case of former powerful minister Chris Murungaru and STANDARD parliamentary reporter Ben Agina where the latter was always informed of the ministers' press conferences before the information got to the newsroom and would return to I and M towers with the story even as editors were still trying to dispatch news crews to cover the function. Murungaru was notoriously known for dishing out thousands of shillings to journalists especially at the time when graft allegations were being leveled against him.
The stories are endless but here is a list of a few prominent politicians who are known to dish out cash to journalists so as to get good coverage. Chris Murungaru, Njenga Karume, Hosea Kiplagat, George Saitoti, Maina Kamanda, David Mwenje, Kipruto arap Kirwa, Raila Odinga, Najib Balala, Nicholas Biwott and Uhuru Kenyatta.
According to the media, the meanest politicians who can 'never buy lunch' include John Michuki, Kivutha Kibwana, Joseph Munyao, William Ruto and vice president Moody Awori.

The Emman Omari and George Saitoti Saga: How Politicians Control The Media
Emman Omari was already an experienced journalist when Saitoti joined politics. The latter did not hesitate to advice him on how the media works and how best to get good coverage in the murky world of politics, for a price of course.
The two got so close that there was a time that Saitoti could not speak in parliament if Omari was not in the press gallery to record his contribution. By then Omari was the Nation newspapers parliamentary reporter, a position he served in for many years.
If you peruse old copies of the paper and read Saitoti stories written by Omari , you will notice almost if not all of them paint a rosy picture of the man who has been implicated in the multi million Goldenberg scandal.
While he was vice president, Omari wrote that it was rather obvious that Saitoti would be Moi's heir and that it was just a matter of time before the Kajiado North MP would find his way to State house. No doubt Omari also pictured what that would mean for him and chances are high that he would have been appointed to head the Saitoti Presidential press unit.
What Omari always avoided talking about was the question of Saitoti's ethnicity considering that he was a Kikuyu by tribe but had changed his name to Maasai and was representing Kajiado North constituency which is pre-dominantly Maasai.
This way, Omari almost convinced his readers and to a wider extent millions of Kenyans that Saitoti was a Maasai and never told Kenyans that the other names of the immensely wealthy politician are Kinuthia Muthengi.
Almost all stories on Saitoti covered in the Nation have been written by non other than Omari who is now the Nation political editor but on his way out due to the age factor. During a recent stormy meeting at the media house, which has been at the center of a controversial sex scandal exposed in the wake of a major downsizing operation, a young journalist demanded that Omari be shown the door in the current purge and downsizing exercise since he had already long passed his retirement age.
But one day something went terribly wrong in the Saitoti-Omari relationship. The two bossom buddies squared it out in public when Omari wrote what Saitoti viewed as a very negative story (what would you expect after years of nothing but positive articles?) The story indirectly implied that Saitoti was a thief of public funds through his links with the Goldenberg scandal.
During a function in Kajiado, Saitoti pointed at Omari and told his mother that before them was the thankless young man he had done so much for yet he was now calling him a thief in the newspapers.
Omari was so embarrassed that he left the function before it was over but he later mended fences with the Kajiado politician who is known for his brazen temper and vulgar answers when dealing with cheeky journalists.
Saitoti is also said to have bought a car for Omari several years ago besides giving him thousands of shillings every month to supplement his income clear evidence that Omari was not only working for the nation, but was also Goerge Saitoti's public relations man.
What I keep on asking myself is, will the professor keep on taking calls from Omari when he retires or will he recruit another young and promising journalist to replace Omari and forget what the older man did for him for more than a decade since they are services which he paid for in full?

A Unique African Safari Holiday Merchant In Kenya
This regular special business feature will inspire and educate you to better market your business for bigger success
Tourism has really taken off in Kenya in recent years, but the real unsung heroes and heroines of this welcome development remain unknown to most Kenyans even as our politicians bask in the glory of the rare success never missing an opportunity to pat themselves on the back for all the advertising and marketing of the Kenya Safari holiday now being done fopr which they are allocating public funds to.
An excellent example of one of these unsung heroes of tourism is Kenyan Hamish Grant, owner of Grant & Cameron Safaris, a small outfit based in Rongai, Nakuru that offers a unique upmarket African Safari product that has gotten rave reviews from many discerning and hard to please tourists who have been fortunate enough to experience it.
Hamish Grant In his element
Grant grew up in his parents farm on the Western slopes of the Rift Valley. Kumekucha spoke to him recently about his uniquely creative African Safari package that incorporates a home stay for his guests at his expansive farmhouse full of history with easy access to world famous Lake Nakuru and a number of other fascinating tourist attractions. Excerpts.
Kumekucha: Please tell us a little about yourself and your business
Hamish Grant: I started Grant and Cameron Safaris in 1987 with my late wife Vanessa Kingsford. Together we built up our company from simple beginnings into a top safari operation. We took over the management of Gogar Farm in 1991 and started a dairy processing business which became one of Kenya's largest privatised milk processors in 1994. We had a son Alex in the same year but tragically Vanessa died during the birth of our daughter Seiya in 1997. In 2003 I married again to Lenka Kurk. We now have another child, Kristina. Lenka and the children often join us for a part of our safaris.
I have taken over 150 safaris to various parts of East Africa in almost two decades as a professional guide. I am interested in all aspects of wildlife, flora and fauna. I do not have any particular area of speciality though I have a keen interest in animals and birds. I was a founder member of Campfire Kenya whose objective is to see the local communities benefit from tourism revenues and become involved in conservation efforts. I was appointed an Honorary Game Warden for the Kenya Wildlife Services in 2004.
When I am not involved in leading safaris I manage Gogar Farms Ltd.
Kumekucha: What is unique and different about this home stay?
Hamish Grant: Our home stay is at Gogar House (see www.classicafricansafaris.com Gogar House) It is the central residence of Gogar Farm, a 4400 acre property that has been in a single family for almost 100 years, near Rongai, Nakuru. The farm is one of the most historic in the Rift Valley dating to the early days of the colonial era in Kenya (see also www.gogar.co.ke ). While the house is within easy reach of Lakes Nakuru and Bogoria for day trips to see our National Parks, the unique aspect to this home stay is that it gives guests a real insight into the daily life and operations of a large scale mixed farm. Guests are encouraged to witness and – for the more adventurous – to participate in the farm’s daily activities such as dipping and milking the cattle, and whatever other activities may be going on: land preparation, planting, harvesting of the crops amongst many others. All the while they are staying as guests of the owner in the main house where they are treated as family friends rather than as tourists. Most guests stay with us as part of a complete Kenya itinerary with Hamish Grant (owner of Gogar Farm) guiding the safari throughout. This is very much a "top end" product aimed at the wealthy and discerning traveller who wants to have a more private safari experience than the normal run-of-the-mill lodge traveller.
Kumekucha: How do you get most of your clients and do you actually measure your results from your marketing efforts for the home stay service?
Hamish Grant: Mostly from word of mouth, through some agents who are aware of our unique product. Very limited marketing and advertising.
Kumekucha: Please give me a brief history of your organization.
Hamish Grant: G&C started in 1988, we have run small upmarket safaris since, specialising in homestays and luxury mobile tented camps.
Kumekucha: What has been the biggest challenge you have faced in the marketplace and how have you tried to tackle it?
Hamish Grant: Making up to date information available to all that need it. Solved by using a website.
Kumekucha: Who comes up with your marketing ideas for you?
Hamish Grant: Nobody. I do it all myself. My wife has a degree in Commerce including marketing, but 90% of the input is my own.
Kumekucha: In your opinion, how valuable is a marketing idea in the success of any organization? Please explain and give examples if possible.
Hamish Grant: Proper marketing is essential. Identifying your market and targeting your marketing efforts to that particular market is key.
Kumekucha: Have you felt the impact of the improved economic situation in the country and especially the higher number of tourists coming into the country? If so what impact has it had on your sales?
Hamish Grant: Tourism goes in cycles. Destinations can be "in favour" or "out of favour" for a variety of reasons. The main reasons are the perceived quality of the product (in comparison to other destinations) and security.
Kumekucha: How many persons does your entire group employ?
Hamish Grant: Very few. I am the chief (and often the only) guide for each safari. Otherwise we employ up to a maximum of four guides at any one time and around 20 support staff including in the office.
Kumekucha: Have you registered any sales directly through your web site? If yes, what percentage of your total sales does it constitute (home stay only)?
Hamish Grant: Not specifically home stay, but since home stay is an integral part of almost every safari we operate they cannot be separated meaningfully. Most clients read the website thoroughly before booking.
Kumekucha: What is the single thing that all your satisfied home stay visitors never fail to mention?
Hamish Grant: They often say that it is the favourite part of their African safari holiday.
