Did you know that as I write this over 4,000 acres of prime public land, right within the world famous Masai Mara game reserve is in the hands of an individual?
But what is even more shocking are recent developments in this controversy which are fascinating to say the least and are a pointer to the rot that is Kenya today. Once again it has been proved that even when the government says that "no stones will be left unturned", there are plenty of "stones" that are way too heavy to be turned.
The individual who has grabbed the land within Masai Mara and whose brother is an assistant Minister in the government of national unity seems to have come up with the perfect strategy for ensuring that the public land stays firmly in his grasp. He has incorporated very big names into his grand theft. And when I say "BIG", I mean really big.
What complicates matters further is that there is a clear conflict of interest over any public prosecution because the current Deputy Public Prosecutor has for a long time been a lawyer to the man whose name the public property within the Mara is registered to.

Media Bill Is The Not The Only Problem

The manner in which the Kenyan media continues to devote virtually all it’s coverage to politics and politicians is getting out of hand, and spells the doom of real growth in Kenya. The latest irritating example is a half-page article by Assistant Minister of Information Koigi wa Wamwere, appearing on page 29 of the Sunday Nation of 5th August 2007.
It beats logic why the print and broadcast media in Kenya insists on pursuing this deplorable policy. The signal it sends is that the media in Kenya caters primarily for politics and politicians, and so the rest of Kenya should look elsewhere for representation.
Koigi wa Wamwere for instance, has become an irritant and an eyesore, despite his distinguished standing as one of the very few individuals who dared challenge both President Kenyatta and President Moi. Koigi wa Wamwere regularly features on virtually all radio stations, television stations and newspapers, including the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), the Royal Media Group, Kiss 100, Classic 105.2, the Nation Media Group, Baraza Limited, Kenya Times Media Trust (KTMT), the People Daily and even Swahili broadcasts of the BBC World Service on 93.7 FM Nairobi, 93.9 FM Mombasa and 88.2 FM Kisumu. As an Assistant Minister for Information, Koigi wa Wamwere also wields considerable influence over the state owned and managed Kenya News Agency (KNA), which has bureaus in virtually all corners of this country.
As the Member of Parliament for Subukia, Koigi wa Wamwere also has the ultimate platform of Parliament. Raila And Kibaki Fight For Ngilu's Attention: What Is She Really Worth?

To get the answer to that question we need to coldly analyze what she is capable of bringing to the table for either ODM Kenya or Narc Kenya.
Can she deliver at least most of the Kamba vote as a block?
The answer to that is question is "No". With Kalonzo Musyoka still actively trying to convince his community that he has a fighting chance of getting into State house, at best that vote will be sliced into two, and this will also heavily depend on which side Ngilu finally joins. The truth of the matter is that Ngilu joining Raila could cause her to even lose her parliamentary seat. It really is a terrible thing, but it is the truth. Rev Jesse Jackson has run for president of the United States, twice but did not even manage to win the Democratic Party nomination that would have seen him go beyond the preliminaries. By Kenyan political standards the man "ameanguka mara mbili" (has failed twice) and is therefore a failure. However on closer examination this is very far from the truth.
In actual fact what has happened is the Rev Jackson has pushed many of his ideas forward through other candidates as a result of his two memorable campaigns. Most notably through former President Bill Clinton. Jackson has also managed to draw a lot of attention to civil right causes. The net result is that the quality of life for blacks in America has improved dramatically through initiatives that trace their origin directly to Jackson and his civil rights cause.
In Kenya, we have this big problem that if you stand for high office and you have no chance of winning, then you are just wasting time. This is one of the reasons why so many young people are frightened to run for any political seat and yet they will be the first to complain loudly about how bad our current leadership is.

Marriage and divorce are fascinating realities of this modern life. The initial love at first site, followed by a whirlwind romance where the man and woman cannot keep their hands off each other. Then the sharp contrast just a few months down the road when the two lovers who had sworn to each other that till death do they part cannot even speak to each other.
In the old days and to a certain extent these days, Africans hardly ever divorce. Instead they still live under the same roof. And if there is a child involved, matters are even worse. Secret Directive: Don't Register New Political Parties, Registrar Told

A Kenyan who has made a late decision to enter into politics and to participate in this year’s polls has found it impossible to register their political party. Using this information, I contacted a law firm in Kenya that I know well and told them that I wished to register a political party. Sure enough, a few telephone calls later word came back that the good people at the registrar of societies have been "instructed" NOT to register any more political parties.
There are currently 250 registered political parties in Kenya.
I find this government decision rather interesting. Will somebody explain to me what advantage or disadvantage it will give the Kibaki administration if there are 250 or 250,000 registered political parties. If anything this decision is denying government much-needed funds in registration fees.
Besides this administration itself has not set a very good example (if registering too many political parties is a crime) because old parties like DP are still operating and claiming that the President will use them to seek re-election. At the same time Narc-Kenya has been registered and then there is yet another Narc being registered by Noah Wekesa after Charity Ngilu refused to play ball with the original Narc. I suppose that Wekesa will have no problem registering his Narc Original and yet an ordinary Kenyan seeking to register a political party will be taken round in circles being constantly told "check later," until the elections are here. Press freedom in Kenya has suffered a major blow with the passing of the controversial Media bill which the Kibaki administration fought tooth and nail soaking in all sort of pressure to ensure that it was passed.
A clause cleverly sneaked in at the 11th hour forces journalists to divulge their source of information in the event that their articles or stories become the subject of a court case. This "sledge hammer" clause combined with the official secrets act that is still in place well over 40 years after independence, means that Anglo Leasing secrets and corruption in high places is safe from ever being unearthed.
The legendary Washington Post journalists who broke the Watergate scandal that forced President Richard Nixon's resignation got a tip off from somebody within government. It is highly unlikely that any such thing can ever happen in Kenya with the new media law in force.
It also means that no brave news source within the borders of the country is safe. They can always be exposed at any time. All somebody has to do is force the matter into court. Even criminals can now make use of this clause rather effectively to silence any would-be witnesses.

The death penalty has yet again been upheld by parliament. This is a sad day for Kenya with respect to human rights and also in the eyes of God most MPs are known to publicly abhor. I am totally opposed to this legistlation Chris, do you support it? Kenya has this law in the statutes but it doesn't practice death penalty beyond conviction, which is worse than those who practice like the USA.
Because Kenya still retains the death penalty, there are thousands of convicts on deathrow awaiting their date with the hangman noose. Although no executions have been carried out since 1987, one has to think and imagine what it feels like to wake up in jail each morning not knowing what it means to stay alive. And this goes on for these condemned individuals for up to 20 years! Is it really just and humane to keep a deathrow convict in suspense for period of time?

Despite the fact that Health Minister Charity Ngilu has spent the better part of today in police custody at CID headquarters as well as yesterday afternoon, police commissioner Major General Ali had a clarification for the press today during a heated press conference session.
The Minister is not under arrest and neither is she being detained by the police, he said. She is simply assisting the police in investigations.
This is a new revelation by the police commissioner which means that next time the men in blue pick you up at the local kiosk with sukuma wiki bread and milk in your hands and ask you to accompany them to the police station (so that you can bribe them for your freedom) and you are as principled as Kumekucha is and spend the night in the cooler, don't tell people you were arrested by police. In my informed view Kamukunji Police Station cells are a much more friendlier place than the usually badly stinking brutal Central Police station cells.
The Police cells and Kenyan prisons contrary to what many naïve Kenyans think, is not filled with rapists and murders and carjackers. NO. They are full of innocent Kenyans whose only crime is that they did not have the money to "buy their freedom." Many others are people merely "assisting the police with investigations" for a very long time.
In 1986 something happened to me in the hands of the police that changed my life forever and in fact almost killed me.
I was newly married and still in the "honeymoon mode" trying to work very hard to provide for my newly established family. I was a journalist but I carefully avoided controversial stories that could get me into trouble. I would not write a political story even if you paid me a million bob (and believe me a million bob was a lot of money in those heady days when a loaf bread cost less than Kshs 4/-).
I worked for a mzungu publication based in Westlands (that was the first of its' kind in Kenya) and had recently received a tip off about a story that involved a traffic policeman who had been deliberately ran over by a matatu driver. I was doing this reluctantly because even such a story was too controversial for me.
One afternoon I walked back into the office in Waumini House Annexe, Westlands to be told that there were some plain clothes policemen looking for me. I assumed that it was about the story I was chasing. I really wasn't frightened of policemen as I had grown up seeing them and interacting with them because my father was very senior police officer and still was at that time.

In 1986 something happened to me in the hands of the police that changed my life forever and in fact almost killed me.
I was newly married and still in the "honeymoon mode" trying to work very hard to provide for my newly established family. I was a journalist but I carefully avoided controversial stories that could get me into trouble. I would not write a political story even if you paid me a million bob (and believe me a million bob was a lot of money in those heady days when a loaf bread cost less than Kshs 4/-).
I worked for a mzungu publication based in Westlands (that was the first of its' kind in Kenya) and had recently received a tip off about a story that involved a traffic policeman who had been deliberately ran over by a matatu driver. I was doing this reluctantly because even such a story was too controversial for me.
One afternoon I walked back into the office in Waumini House Annexe, Westlands to be told that there were some plain clothes policemen looking for me. I assumed that it was about the story I was chasing. I really wasn't frightened of policemen as I had grown up seeing them and interacting with them because my father was very senior police officer and still was at that time.

At least something is working in the Kenyan justice system. A Judge has just ordered the immediate release of the 5 Civil Society leaders who were being held by police.
Can we test the system to prove a point to Bwana Mwangi and inform the police that we plan 10 more demonstratoions at parliament buildings on the MP's "fishy" bonuses (for what!!! For sinking Kenya lower in the 5 years they have been in parliament?)

Kumekucha To Issue Statement On Murungaru Post
I will issue a statement here tomorrow concerning the heated issue of the controversial Murungaru post which seems to have angered Vikii although the hurtful comments targeted everybody and mostly Kumekucha himself (read it again and see for yourself).
Without tolerance for other opinions and especially at this elite level, there will be no hope for the rest of Kenya. Please let us not get abusive, let us debate, let us present facts. Let us listen to others. It is what made the Greeks great.
The reason why I cannot address this Murungaru issue today is because I am chasing a very BIG story for this blog. I believe I will get the facts in that story which will shock many of you.
I take this opportunity to thank you all for this healthy debate that has gone many notches higher over the last week or so.
Meanwhile I humbly appeal to all friends of Kumekucha to pray for the speedy recovery as well as release from police custody of Mwalimu Mati and other civil rights patriots who respresented us at parliament buildings yesterday and took the cuffs and brunt of police harassment on our behalf. Take heart, all, God will deliver Kenya.

Blog Under Attack By Porn Poster
My dear brothers and sisters,
Over the last two weeks or so, I have appeared to be a little paranoid to many of you and some of my actions here have puzzled many of you. However today, what has emerged is the clearest evidence so far that I have not been boxing with mere shadows.
Somebody has been very busy today posting pornographic posts here. It seems that because we have managed to smoke out the guys with some strange objectives, they have now come up with a Plan “B”.
Today alone I have deleted about 4 pornographic posts so far.
As it is, it looks like I will soon be forced to moderate all comments, which will greatly reduce our enjoyment of this blog and probably help these people achieve their objectives. I am still monitoring the situation closely.
What do you guys think? Any other ideas of how we can fight these people?

This is the most difficult post I have ever had to make here since Kumekucha started (now going to 3 years). It is difficult because I am faced with the prospect of disturbing the peace in this blog and losing a very good dear friend I have made here.
Nobody has contributed so many useful insider scoops to this blog than this good friend of mine that I am talking about. I value this guy very much and I am not ashamed to say that I need him here in this blog. Not only that, this guy works amongst the less privileged Kenyans, the masses of voiceless-down-and-out Kenyans—which already gives him a very soft spot in my heart. You all know that I believe the key to the future is with this group that many of us hardly understand. I asked a question here about how many people have visited the slums and as you can see the silence is deafening—apart from a few counted people (including this treasured friend of mine).

Thank you guys for being real. I am not perfect and I openly accept criticism. There is a huge difference between criticism and vulgar abuse that says nothing but call somebody names (which I have also tolerated a lot of here).
And yes, I am human and I showed a lot of that human part yesterday and shared a little of my life with all you nice guys out there who I consider to be my best friends.
However the issue between me and PKW is not about emotions. When I come here, I leave my emotions at home. How many comments do you think I would have deleted if I came here emotionally? Some comments you good people have even begged me to delete and I haven't. Because anybody can say anything here without fear, except abuse the intelligence of others—I'm going to be very tough on that one and that's why I made a point yesterday.

Thank you guys for being real. I am not perfect and I openly accept criticism. There is a huge difference between criticism and vulgar abuse that says nothing but call somebody names (which I have also tolerated a lot of here).
And yes, I am human and I showed a lot of that human part yesterday and shared a little of my life with all you nice guys out there who I consider to be my best friends.
However the issue between me and PKW is not about emotions. When I come here, I leave my emotions at home. How many comments do you think I would have deleted if I came here emotionally? Two quick issues.
Firstly there are readers who have said that they are having problems making posts. Kindly give me details of the exact nature of the problem, because nobody blocks comments here. Secondly one of our prominent commentators made a comment yesterday, which I am surprised was not challenged. He said of his preferred candidate; “You cannot corrupt the incorruptible.”
He’s a good guy that I like and I’m sure he was just getting excited and emotional as I often do myself, because obviously the man in question is NOT incorruptible.
Tomorrow I carry some interesting details on new revelations that raise even more questions, about the man who at the moment stands the highest chances of being president. Don’t miss it. It’s all happening right here at Kumekucha.

I looked at a friend’s braided hair (locally referred to as twist) with admiration at the way it was done. It was neat and shining making her look so elegant. I told her you must take me to that place you did your hair.

It is true that my heart skips a beat every time I hear a strange sounding car in the neighborhood close to our gate. Alas, nothing but what can be called an occupational hazard. I still have no regrets about the path I have chosen for myself.

Have you noticed that those "strange comments" have disappeared since I raised the red flag in this blog and the quality of debate has gone two to three notches higher?
I am grateful that not all readers of this blog are insensitive. I put Kalamari and Taabu at the top of the list of the most sensitive readers to strange and often subtle moves by some who visit this blog religiously. Of course some of the innocent are helping their cause by making fun of the whole thing and now readers criticizing me warn; "you will probably call me a NSIS agent."

There have been accusations in parliament leveled against ODM presidential hopeful Raila Odinga in connection to some oil contracts that have "vanished."
I made a few enquiries a few hours ago about the Swiss companies involved. The reason why I am getting a little jittery about this oil business is because both Goldenberg and Anglo Leasing had critical "connections" to Switzerland. I pray that I am wrong this time and that everything is above board concerning this oil contract business, although all my instincts and the information so far tell me otherwise.

I just want to bring to the attention of our regular readers and even casual readers, what is happening in this blog with mostly those leaving comments.
As traffic grows in leaps and bounds, many folks arriving here have been referred here by various people and arrive here with certain prejudices, which are at the top of their minds before they read a single sentence. These prejudicial views of course depend a lot on the views of the Kenyan who has referred them.
While I welcome all readers kindly note that when you rush to make sweeping statements and prejudicial remarks, when you have not taken the time to even read through one post, it is annoying to other readers.

As much as we all have different political leanings and ideas on the way forward for Kenya, we all agree about one thing; that the country is in the mess it is in today because our fathers, mothers and uncles mostly decided to do nothing, through 40 years of misrule.
Alas, they had a good excuse, with the cold war that propped up murderous dictatorial governments in Africa opposing a government in those days was a sure death sentence.

If you are keen enough you will see of late the kind of initiatives the Kibaki administration is laying out in an effort to “upgrade” the livelihood of the people.
Notably I wish to cite the Thika road, the roads ministry has proved to be a true disciple of Macadam the father of tarmac roads by showcasing a dazzling repair works, scraping and filling pot hills and potholes respectively.
This is just a tip of the iceberg, developmental projects have become the order of the day, employing close to a million Kenyans directly or indirectly surpassing their election pledge of 500,000 jobs yearly. But hey there is a catch this being an election year according to Kenya ’s political calendar which is meant to signify political sunset for the unlucky politicians and political groupings (parties). Recently President Kibaki had yet another meeting with former President Moi that sent jitters down the spines of those in the know. (As I was posting this, news came through that Moi has been appointed special envoy to the Sudan. Still I don’t believe that this is the only thing No2 and No3 were discussing).
Contrary to common belief, the two old men have not fallen out with each other and insiders say that the meeting was designed to put the final touches to their campaign strategy.

Kumekucha has reliably been informed that a key Mungiki figure, Kimani Ruo, met the same fate that befell the five men shortly after he was acquitted by the High Court on charges of being in possessing of a firearm and drug trafficking.
We have been informed that Ruo was abducted by plainclothes detectives from the Special Crime Prevention Unit outside the High Court and bundled into a police car and handcuffed. The car sped off towards Mombasa road. Police officers privy to what took place informed us that Ruo was shot dead and his body thrown into the Nairobi National Park. It’s believed the body was mauled by lions and other wild animals and there will never be any trace of him. Ruo’s abduction was captured by KBC cameras but senior police officers ordered the state-owned station to destroy the tapes fearing it might betray them.

The book just sold and kept on selling and today almost 60 years later, the damn little book is still selling like crazy. He went on to write the big brother book, 1984, which he is also well known for, but it has never beaten Animal Farm in sales.
So, what is so special about Animal Farm? It is the fact that it struck a chord with many about what goes wrong with so many revolutions, which start with good intentions until human nature kicks in. Animal Farm, many believed talked about communist Russia.
