The first and the last we unfortunately have no control over it but when it comes to our wedding day, we want to take control of everything from the kind of people you want to attend to the food that your guests will eat. Biggest Risk Taken In Posting A Comment: Kumekucha Nomination For Comment Award

I would like to nominate this reader for the award of post made at greatest risk to the personal security of a Kenyan but for the good of the motherland.

This post pointed me in the right direction for research that led to new evidence and angles published only here in this Kumekucha blog that have never before been presented anywhere else in the still unsolved riddle of the Mboya assassination.

This same reader made a number of other very illuminating comments with pointers which I will not reveal for security reasons (to protect the commentator). Obviously this is a person who has worked with the security aparatus in this country in the past if not in the present as well.

It is interesting how many younger generation Kenyans who have never studied the history of Kenya and especially the life and death of Tom Mboya get upset when we mention that tribalism exists in Kenya and it is a dangerous monstor that should be faced and not swept under the carpet (like they want us to do). It is impossible to understand Kenyan politics if you have no idea who Mboya was, a man who relied on almost 90% Kikuyu votes during his entire political career... that was before the Kisumu riots and deaths and the propaganda that followed. My friends I do not peddle lies here, only very carefully researched truths that you are free to investigate on your own an verify.

Please my dear readers, study the history of your country and don't come to this blog to get upset over things you do not understand. PLEASE.

Congratulations to this annonymous blogger. Whoever you are, thank you for loving your country enough to have given us these and other vital leads.

On the right track Chris. To describe Kingsway House as eerie confirms that I was not the only one who shuddered when I entered that building. I visited it when it was Kenya's hub of intelligence and indeed Nyayo or Nyati houses pale in comparison. Blood curdling is the phrase I would use. You have explored TJ's threat to the status quo very well. Let's rummage abit further, who were the intelligence apparatchiks at that time (1969)? Indeed one very relevant observation you made is that there were no mobile phones then, so that 'wet job' involved considerable operational and communication resources. Only the security organs had these resources. I believe this matrix holds the key...a garden path that keeps getting missed year in year out.

Kumekucha Comment Nomination: Most Solid Solution-Packed Comment Ever

I would like to nominate the following comment as the most solid solution-packed comment ever and quite timely too because it addresses a pressing Kenyan problem that needs to be dealt with immediately.

Without national healing, and not just for tribalism, but for corruption and other injustices against the Kenyan people, it will be virtually impossible for us to reach the promised land that we all crave so much, let alone have a real new beginning.

May the good Lord in all his mercies bring such a day to pass in Kenya.

Thank you Phil and congratulations;

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "The Kikuyu Question: The Way Forward":

Phil Says:

Thank you Chris for saying it as it is. Rather than have the Kukuyus jump start your proposed national healing, I would propose that:

a) the current constitution must be done away with in totality. Let us have a complete new one that will, among other things, have the executive powers devolved to parliament, judiciary and other offices. I will quickly add that Raila Odinga DOES NOT have to be Prime Minister or Vice President. This will demystify the Kenyan presidency once and for all. The current powers of the presidency are too much open to abuse as we have experienced since independence.

b) establishment of a truth and reconcilliation commission. This will not only give Kikuyu brethren an opportunity to repent and embrace the rest of Kenyans as you have suggested, but will also create a platform for individuals who may have committed political assasinations, high level corruption and other crimes against humanity to repent without fear of persecution.

The Kikuyu Question

Some years back when my eldest son was born I went to the maternity hospital to see my wife and of course the bundle of joy. We had been trying for some time to get a second child and my wife had started getting very distressed because we only had a daughter and she desperately wanted a son. I love my daughter very much and I have no problem with girls. I am one of those people who greatly value daughters, just study families around and you will quickly realize that they are more of a blessing than sons in most cases. The only problem is getting them through adolescence (phew!! but that's a story for another day.) All in all girls are very responsible and will inherit the family fortune just like a boy and have been known to take care of things very well. My daughter has in fact inherited my business acumen. I love her to bits (you know what they say about daughters and their fathers).

Quip for the day; The really dangerous thing in Kenya today is that some tribalists don't even realize that they are tribalists. It has been planted too deep into their blood. Remember the first step on the road to recovery for an alcoholic?
======================================
My wife never reads my blog because she says she hates politics so don't think I am writing anything here for her benefit. This is just me. I would have still been very happy and satisfied with one daughter or three daughters. My wife thought differently. She thought like many men I know who will do anything to get a son. Some even go to the extremes of openly discriminating against daughters. My wife of course loves our daughter but I could clearly tell where the pressure to have a son was coming from.

My message to you stone-age men out there who harass your wives because you don't have a son, is simple. Grow up!

Anyway, I digress.

Moments after I got to the maternity and had had barely the time to acquaint myself with the new arrival, my in-laws arrived. They crowded around the bed and the baby was roughly snatched from my hands as animated discussions in Kikuyu suffocated the place. In those days, being newly married to my Kikuyu beauty, I did not understand the language and so I floated.

I tried to ask my wife something but she ignored me to continue an animated discussion in Gikuyu with one of her cousins or aunts or whatever (have you noticed that all Kikuyus are related?)

I couldn't take it, I slipped out and nobody even noticed. I was young and head strong in those days and so I did something terrible. I never went back again to the hospital to see my wife. There were no cell phones in those days and so my wife frantically made calls all over the place. When it was time for her to be discharged from hospital, I finally went back and we made up. But that's how hurt I had been.

In retrospect I can say that I should not have been that angry. After all, in those early days I had not really understood the Kikuyu. That's just them, they dominate and are mostly insensitive to others, but they probably don't mean it, many of them are very caring people. In fact some of the most caring people I know are Kikuyus. For instance I owe my mother in-law a debt that money cannot pay.

I have taken the time to give you this background as my credentials for understanding the tribe in Kenya that holds the future of the country in their grasp.

There are certain characteristics amongst the Kikuyu that are not good, and must be addressed for the future of this country. Let me give a few examples of what I mean.

# Most Kikuyus have no problem calling Luos who read this blog abusive bad names (just read the comments which I have left as evidence). Deeply hurting abusive statements like "smelly foreskin" are common in this blog because of our open policy of being tolerant to all views (this thing about people not being circumcised is ancient and ridiculous because 70% of the men on this planet are NOT circumcised). Several times I have been called "Jaluo" although I do not belong to that tribe.

But the minute you start discussing the number of Kikuyu appointments in media organizations in Kenya (which I have irrefutably evidence from reliable sources is deliberate. Even certain appointments in influential private media has been influenced by State house) some of my dear readers who are Kikuyus get very touchy and irritated. And they start making statements like; "now this blog is starting to stink." Why was it not stinking when you were calling other Kenyans "smelly foreskin?" They also say things like "you started very well but now you have lost it, I am out of here." What they mean is that when I was allowing abuses against my dear Luo brothers, I was doing very well. But now that I want to discuss the Kikuyu, I have lost it. One wonders what would happen of somebody really got abusive against the Kikuyu of the "smelly foreskin" type.

Let me emphasize at this early juncture that there is a growing number of our Kikuyu brothers who are very different from the rest. Progressive minded and nationalistic Kenyans whom every Kenyan should be very proud of. Just read the comments in this site and you will be able to pick them out.

# Most Kikuyus will go out of their mind if Raila Odinga or any other Luo is elected President of Kenya. Even my wife believes that he is "not the right person." Some pretend that they would not mind James Orengo being president but that is a lie because they know he stands no chance. It is Raila who is the immediate threat.

You can say what you want to say but this blogger is NOT a supporter of Raila, although given a choice between the two devils, Raila and Kalonzo, I would not hesitate to pick Raila. My firm belief is that they should all go home (Raila included) and allow a brand new era in Kenyan politics. For heave's sake let's try something new and different.

I have also heard very many well-educated Kikuyu brothers of mine say that if Raila were to be elected president, the capital of Kenya would move to Kisumu. What evidence do they have that this will be so?

I have done some very intensive research over a long period of time (as those who have been with me in this blog for long will testify) and I am convinced that I have found the answer.

When Kenya's first president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta fell out with his Vice president Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and the Kenyatta inner circle also realized that people like Tom Mboya were a potential threat they knew that they had to act fast, if they were to stay in power and continue grabbing land and basically robbing the country blind.

Mboya stopped two bullets in the Nairobi streets in broad daylight and then the Kenyatta administration launched a major propaganda war against the Luo. That propaganda campaign was very effective and is probably the greatest damage that the Kenyatta administration did to the country. Today that propaganda flows as truth in the veins of Kikuyus and deep in their blood. And it shows. Just read the following comments left in this blog and make up your mind for yourself.

(I would like to nominate one of them for the worst comment from an ignmorant person given in bad taste… can you spot it?)

There goes a real challenge kumekucha could take up.And become real famous, like he craves.

This is the most myopic treatise that I have ever read. It tries to demystify the whole rubric of tribalism but ends up being very tribal. I went to school where there were Luos and Luhyas and Kikuyus and Giriamas and many other tribes including the Digo but we were brought up in an atmosphere of being Kenyans. I never thought of myself as a Luo. I ended up marrying a Maragoli and my best man was a Kikuyu! Tribalism only exists among the political class who are presently clamoring for leadership or trying, albeit unsuccessfully to retain power. This class hammers into the minds of the illiterate and uninformed vitriol of tribalism. This happens only in politics. It does not happen in NGOs or Churches or even Schools

The perceived greed and over ambition for money power and property is the energy that drives this economy of ours. Those who feel it is not should go to Tanzania and see how people who have no ambition have 'laliad masikio'. Ambition is the gear wheel that propels economic growth-unless we want to live in a socialist state. Just because someone has exploited resources that were lying bare before you and you lacked the will or desire to use them you now label him a glutton or a thief!!! WACHENI WIVU!!!

Fortunately we have also had plenty of very brave comments like these ones;

I am a Kikuyu after being a Kenyan after being a human. YES! Truth be told we are a very tribalistic people. Our pattern of voting is a clear indication of that... can everyone stop pretending and taking offence about the suggestion that we are a problem to the whole national development and instead analyze it and find ways to sort stuff out...

I being a Kikuyu knows that most Kikuyus are a real problem in this country because of the overambition, gluttony for power, money and property. These attributes are vividly manifested in Kenyan politics, social life, economic and cultural lifestyles of the Kikuyus.

Luos are not the problem, it is the Kikuyu. Ask a Kalenjin and they will tell you it is the pride of the Kikuyu which is fanning Hatred. It is not even the killing of Tom Mboya alone, but the way resources were sharred after Independence which is fanning the Hatred.

The Kikuyus are using short cuts to achieve thier goals which is even worsening the situation. Look at the way Kibaki is using the Steadmann research (polls) to cheat Kenyan that he is popular, the way he wants to appoint Electrol commisioners, the way he is driving away the Maasai from Laikipia and very many other crazy things that we are seeing.

Kikuyu Short cuts are brooding something very bad which if nothing is done all the tribes of Kenya may avenge against them one day

Why We Are Headed for A Kikuyus Versus The Rest Political Contest

It is quite clear that we are headed for a major political contest and the way the cards will fall is that we will end up with the Kikuyu and some of their close allies (GEMA) on one side versus the rest of Kenya.

Already if you carefully look at the storm that is brewing up within Narc-Kenya over holding grass-roots elections, this is exactly what is happening. The latest is that leading Narc-Kenya politicians like Dunston Mungatana and Kipruto Kirwa are now threatening to leave the party.

Let us address their bone of contention without fear and let us mention it bluntly. It is nothing but Kikuyu arrogance in the Narc-Kenya high command that is causing the whole problem. The Kikuyu like to dominate and they ofen behave as if the other communities do not matter.

By the way I told you folks very early that this experiment of forming coalitions long before elections will not work. That's the reason why we have trouble in ODM-Kenya and trouble in Narc-Kenya. Get ready folks, it will only get worse and uglier.

This big Kikuyu issue is also the reason why Paul Muite was called a traitor by Martha Karua. It is also the reason why Koigi Wamwere will probably lose his parliamentary seat this time unless Kenyans wake up to what is happening. These two brave nationalistic Kikuyu leaders dared to support the other side by siding with the minimum reforms group.

If Kenyans do not face this issue openly and discuss it, the future is predictable. If our Kikuyu brothers will continue to call this blog tribalistic the moment we bring up such issues, then there is no chance for Kenya.

While all other tribes in Kenya also tend to promote tribalism, it is our Kikuyu brothers who are in a position to jump-start change in Kenya and help us end tribalism and all the evil that comes with it. By virtue of their sheer numbers and political and economic might, the truth is that Kenya cannot ignore the Kikuyu, even as many of the Kikuyu continue to ignore the rest of Kenya, firmly believing that only Kikuyus will make the best leaders in this country and that they are the only community that can be trusted to occupy State House responsibly.

Try telling most Kikuyus that having produced two presidents already, they should step aside and cheer on the other tribes of Kenya.

The Kikuyu Question: The Way Forward

I am aware that my posts today will cause plenty of controversy (and irritation), but I will not make any apologies. Most of you readers come here every day to read the truth presented in a way that it is not presented in any other media. We must be brave enough and mature enough to accept the truth even if it is not palatable to our personal selves.

It is only when a girl looks at the mirror and accepts the fact that she is ugly that she will be able to move on with her life and make the best of the situation. Only then can she look for cosmetics to mask her ugly skin and work on her dancing steps, jokes and smiles. But woe unto her of she continues to pretend that she is beautiful and has no problem.

Let us not get defensive either. With the classic denial stance many have taken in this blog pointing to Adolf Hitler's annihilation of millions of Jews and saying that our discussions here are headed in that direction.

In my opinion we need national healing and this can only start when we boldly face the past and the great injustices that were committed against some Kenyans. It would be advisable for those who see far and belong to the Kikuyu tribe to help organize a healing campaign where the Kikuyu can for instance publicly apologize to the Luo for the great injustices committed against them since independence. They should tell this generation about the deliberate propaganda that was peddled, not even for political reasons, but to enable corruption and the rape of this country to continue without any obstacles.

Kikuyus and Luos are both Kenyans. We love them both and we cannot do without either.

I am a son to both communities because not only was I born in Kisumu, (my parents were traveling and I couldn't wait to get into this world) but I also met my wife in Kisumu (she was traveling like I was). Many other wonderful things have happened to me because of sons and daughters of the Luo. I am also a son of the Kikuyu by marriage and some of my closest friends are Kikuyus. The blood flwoing through the veins of my children is Kikuyu. I have learnt a lot about business and entrepreneurship from Kikuyu mentors. I also love them the way they are because I understand them very well. Some of my favourite songs are Kikuyu songs—heard of a guy called Kamaru?

As Kenyans we badly need the business acumen of the Kikuyu (and their beautiful women—at least I do). And we also need the intelligence of our dear Luo brothers as well as all their other many unsung good qualities.

As the popular Eric Wainaina and company advertising jingle goes—which always brings tears to my eyes although I don't drink beer. Many musicians from many different tribes came together to compose this classic, including the smelly fore skins or jaruo, the kyuks etc.;

Feel the rhythm
A nation on the move
Feel the spirit
Feel it shining through
We are Kenya
Forever Kenya
We are Kenya, we are

One country, One PEOPLE.

Government Forms Special Police Unit To Deal With Mungiki

Following the brutal murder of a matatu driver early this week in the hands of the dreaded Mungiki sect and the bloody aftermath in Kiambu, the government has now established a unit to specifically deal with the blood-thirsty sect that seeks to control the transport industry.

For the past five years, the sect has grown monumentally as the government turned a blind eye on their activities not to mention that majority of them belong to the Kikuyu community.

The sect which is said to have originated from Nyandarua has hundreds of thousands of followers including women and children and make money through extortion and running protection rackets in slums. Remember the mafia in the United States during the 40s?

They have also made a fortune by controlling matatu routes where public service vehicles are forced to part with between Sh 100-200 per day failure to which the crew is threatened with violence and even death.

The slain driver whose body was mutilated and beheaded, had refused to pay the extortion money hence the slaying. In a revenge attack, matatu drivers and touts slashed and bludgeoned four suspected Mungiki adherents the following day before police stepped in to patrol the routes.

Mungiki is probably the largest criminal gang in the country involved in organized crime and has a well-disciplined force, mostly consisting of zealots who will not hesitate to kill those perceived to be against the organization even if they happen to be policemen.

With the government forming a special unit to battle the sect it is obvious that their activities have created a security crisis in the country and they have to be stopped at all costs.

The government knows a lot about the sect including its leadership structures but has previously not taken any interest as the sect was not involved in any illegal activities and were simply considered religious zealots.

Now that the sect has reared its ugliest side, the government has chosen to move fast and
stop these butchers who deal in human flesh as thet have wrecked havoc in several towns in the country but seem to have a stranglehold on Nairobi and Nakuru.

It will be interesting to see how the crackdown goes considering that both Mungiki and the ruling elite belong to the same community and now need each other more than ever before since this is an election year.

Narc Kenya Loyalists Threaten To Defect

Cabinet minister Kipruto arap Kirwa and assistant minister Danson Mungatana have threatened to defect from Narc Kenya if the party does not hold its elections within the month.

The two claim that a clique of politicians from one region, read mount Kenya have impressed upon the president to stop the party going to the polls maybe until after the general elections expected in December.

It is easy to understand why mount Kenya politicians do not want the party polls soon and would prefer if they were done after the general elections or never done at all.

Common sense says that every parliamentary aspirant from mount Kenya region will fight for the party nomination since it’s the most popular outfit in the region. It is this potentially very stiff competition that incumbent MPs greatly fear in that they could lose in the nomination stages and in effect end their political careers.

A taste of things to come was witnessed in Kipipiri a few weeks when the incumbent Amos Kimunya who is also finance minister was booed , heckled and almost thrown out of a party consultation meeting and was quick to accuse his rival, Mwangi Githiomi of engineering the entire episode.

Just like any other region in the country, majority of the Mount Kenya legislators will not be re-elected to parliament, even those in the current cabinet, and the only way to survive politically is to have them given direct party nominations ahead of the general elections. This is possible but if the electorate wants nothing to do with you, you will lose to your rival irrespective of his or her party affiliation.

With more than he can handle as far as problems are concerned, President Mwai Kibaki will probably never call for the party elections in a bid to avert a split, which could cost him his re-election.

Chances are that Narc Kenya may never hold elections as long as Kibaki is in charge and chances are there will be a major split in the party as a result of his refusal to hold the those polls.

In fact, the failure of Narc Kenya to hold internal elections may result in its defeat in the general elections but president Kibaki's arrogant and selfish advisers don’t seem to see that or maybe, they are too drunk with power to see beyond their noses.

Nominations For Best Comment And Most Consistent Commentator

I hardly ever agree with this reader but I would like to nominate him for best comment. Apart from the comment being very well written, he criticizes (he said some very nasty things about me in an earlier comment. But don't worry, I didn't take it personally) while giving solid facts. Makes a professional writer like me feel (VERY) threatened.

Reading it you get to understand the race for the Gacoka seat this time round, very well.

I would also like to nominate Taabu for the award of most consistent commentator. If you carefully read some of the comments, many folks regularly contradict themselves. But NOT Taabu. Like him or hate him, Taabu is so consistent that you almost know what he is going to say.

Some folks think he's my side kick but I'm sure they're just sore, isn't any reader allowed to agree with me without being branded... you know what. By the way Taabu does NOT always agree with my views.

I will announce the winners next Sunday and not this Sunday, so that there is enough time for me and you guys to pick out all the examples we can find in this blog of good comments.

I welcome comments on these two first nominations.

(This post has been corrected so that Vikii is a guy)

vikii has left a new comment on your post "Will Mutava Musyimi Contest The Presidency?":

I think people have a right to become what they want. We have other reverends in parliament and nobody raises a finger.
About Musyimi and Gachoka politics, in my opinion his chances are pegged to who becomes odm presidential candidate. First I will correct the belief held by Chris and company that Nyaga enjoys bedrock support in Gachoka. A quick look at the election results for both elections won by Nyaga shows the opposite. In '97 he was beaten hands down by Musakwa in the KANU primaries. His father contacted Moi and the results were reversed. musakwa defected to the Green African Party and he put up a comendable show. The difference between the two was less than1000 votes. Then come the Tosha elections. Nyaga defected to Narc at the last minute and was controversially handed the Narc ticket. The difference was 500 votes. this shows how shaky Nyaga is back home.

How will the odm nominations have a bearing on musyimi's chances? We should first remember the bad blood between Hon Kalonzo and Nyaga. During the Kasarani fiasco of 2001, Nyaga put up for the vicechairmans post to block kalonzo. He said that kalonzo had all along been undermining him in Gachoka and that it was payback time. He vowed on TV that he will make sure Kalonzo's antics will come to null. Then come this years old nominations,he is at it again. The thinking in kalonzo's camp is that he was planted by Raila to cut a good chunk of would be Uhuru's or kalonzo's votes to the advantage of raila odinga. In swhort there is a lot of mistrust between nyaga and kalonzo. in my opinion if kalonzo clinches the ODM ticket he will use all in his power to make sure Musakwa gets the odm ticket in gachoka in which case he will go all the way to win the seat. If kalonzo looses the nominations then it means that nyagah will win the ODM ticket in gachoka constituency. This is where Musyimi will get a lifeline. kalonzo will feel beaten and will try some revenge on the weak guys who campaigned against him. He will secretly join forces with the Kibaki forces in gachoka to campaign for musyimi if only to ensure nyaga is jobless. All in all the next mp will be Musyimi or musakwa. Joe has a zero chance.

About this talk of fresh leadership, i am afraid it doesnt always add up. I am tired of reading in this blog and hearing in Vijana tugutuke rallies that the youth have the monopoly of good leadership. We forget that those guys in parliament were once fresh, what did they do? can anyone out there tell me how the 34 year old mungatana is a better mp than the 75 year old nyachae? How is Ahmed khalif better than Joseph Munyao? This is a load of crap. We should start sourcing for trustworthy leaders with integrity and u know what? these are not preserves of the young.

Mutava Musyimi: PNU secret weapon for 2012?

Poll suggests that Mutava Musyimi could be a populer presidential candidate

In the run up to the 2002 general elections a seasoned political analyst quipped in my hearing, how wonderful it would be if Rev Mutava Musyimi were to seek political office and specifically the presidency.Link

At first I was puzzled at the suggestion but then he quickly went on to point out the qualities this selfless servant of the people possesses, and managed to convince me to take my thinking in the same direction he was going.

QUIP FOR THE DAY;
Some Kenyans are convinced that when you discuss tribalism problems in Kenya, you are promoting tribalism.

================================
Weeks ago this blogger pointed out here that the Rev Musyimi was headed for politics. One reader angrily dismissed me as a rumour mongerer. That reader of this blog will now have to eat their words because judging from some recent developments, it is now abundantly clear that Rev Musyimi is headed straight into the murky waters of Kenyan politics.

The normally cool headed church leader sounded irritated two days ago when a journalist insisted on asking him a second time, albeit in a different way, whether he was going into politics. Musyimi who was apparently reading a message on his cell phone looked up and said; "Now you are being clever. I have told you, when I am ready to talk about that I will call you like I have today."

Musyimi had called the press t announce that he was stepping down from the NCCK chair almost two years before his tenure was due to expire. He would have left at the end of next year. He pointedly remarked that he had been at the helm of organization that brings together virtually all major church denominations on the country for about 14 years. "That's too long for a person to be in the same job," he quipped.

What is not yet clear are the details of his entry into politics.

My contacts in Embu insist that he will contest the Gachoka parliamentary seat currently held by Joseph Nyagah (who is aligned to ODM) in what is expected to be a bruising battle as Nyagah is not one to take a fight for his political survival lightly. Nyagah is also aspiring for the presidency in a party known as GAP, which is affiliated to ODM-Kenya.

The former clergyman will also put up a formidable fight considering that president Kibaki is behind him as the two are known to be good friends ever since the latter took over power in 2002.

Musyimi is banking heavily on the over 10,000 Kamba votes in Gachoka and has in recent months been taking delegations from Gachoka to government minister's to have their problems sorted out. Lands minister Kivutha Kibwana and his water counterpart Mutua Katuku are two ministers that have hosted the delegations.

Being the NCCK boss for the past 14 years, Mutava knows a few things about politics as he rubbed shoulders with politicians several times including the period when the clamour for a new constitution had escalated.

He is also a good public speaker which is a plus in politics but he still in many ways a greenhorn who does not know the nitty gritty stuff of electioneering which Nyagah is conversant.

Mutava might shake Nyagah in Gachoka but this does not mean that the latter will pack his bags and go home, on the contrary, Musyimi with all his excellent credentials is bound to find himself in a major political battle on this his maiden bid for the August house.

So far other church leaders to declare an interest in this year's include Pastor Pius Muiru, one of the most popular evangelists in Kenya as well as Bishop Margaret Wanjiru. Muiru is also going for the presidency. Bishop Wanjiru is eyeing the Starehe seat while Muiru is going for Kamukunji. Kenyan Tribe Where Men Still Get Into A Bloody Fight To Secure A Bride

During the Stone Age, men would club each other to death for a woman. The victor would then club the woman they were fighting over on the head and drag her by the hair to his cave where "the marriage" would be immediately consummated.

Something fairly similar still happens amongst the violent Pokot community in Kenya. Shocking images were aired last night on KTN TV showing youths whipping each other thoroughly in West Pokot where the victor got the opportunity to get a bride among the 'beautiful' girls watching the bloody duel.

This is how it works. Those seeking brides arrive at the market with several 'escorts' who also participate in the whipping duel with long heavy sticks, but later pull back to allow for a one on one affair between the two men seeking the bride.

Unfortunately, some of the brides have already made up their minds on who they fancy prior to the fights and the young girl was seen on television resisting and almost in tears because the one she loved had lost the duel. You can't imagine what is bound to happen to her when she reaches her new home.

An enthusiastic bride seeker seething with confidence and interviewed by news anchor Catherine Wambua shortly before the duel began, could not have out it better. He excitedly said; "Hapa, ni kiboko ndio ina amua' which means "Here, it is the cane that decides."

Do You Still Use Your Website As An Online Brochure?

Message from our sponsors;
It is sad how most people still use their websites as nothing more than an online brochure when it can easily be turned into a powerful source of business development.

All one has to do is move their website to the top of the search results within major search engines. This is much easier to achieve than you ever thought possible. What you need to do is make use of Search Engine Positioning Services.

The various SEO services offered by this service provider range from a few hundred dollars per month to thousands per month depending of course on the number of search terms you wish to target. Bt even more important in determining what your search engine optimization will cost is how competitive your target search terms are

Nairobians Can't Get Enough Of Raila's Hummer

Raila Odinga's latest acquisition, the Hummer utility vehicle continues to cause quite a stir in Nairobi with residents pushing and shoving wherever the Langata MP stops so that they can catch a good glimpse of the vehicle hat some say costs Kshs 43 million (while others insist that it can be acquired for slightly more than Kshs 10 million. The website says, it depends on various factors and it can cost much less than 10 million) which Raila says is a gift from friends of ODM-Kenya living abroad.

The vehicle has also been discussed in parliament with some government MPs saying that he should surrender it to the speaker since the anti-corruption and economic crimes act stipulates that gifts worth over shs 10,000 should be surrendered.

For Raila, he is enjoying the limelight that the vehicle has given him and he is always seen grinning from ear to ear through the entire journey as he patrols Nairobi during the day and will always stop to address crowds that notice him and the vehicle.

He has even christened the car 'Nyundo' which is a hammer in Kiswahili and goes further to say the current government is so rigid that it needs a hammer to be hit with and what better one than his new ride.

The 5,000cc vehicle is fire brigade red in color with tinted windows but the front passenger seat has its window constantly opened and a grinning Raila is always at hand making gesticulations as it cruises along the city streets.

Over to you, Kalonzo Musyoka.

In Parts Of Kenya A National ID Now Costs Kshs 1,500

Those who applied for identity cards in June last year are yet to get them, worse still those who applied for replacements of lost ones during the same period are also still waiting for the vital document.

Worse still, it has now emerged that some registration clerks are taking advantage of desperate teenagers and demanding bribes of between Sh 1,000-1,500 from applicants who are mostly unemployed youths who need the ID cards to search for employment.

Last night on television, clerks from Kerugoya were exposed in the scum and as usual nothing happened to them though the local MP promised to take up the issue with the anti-corruption authorities.

This being an election year, one can't be branded paranoid for accusing the government of delaying the documents on purpose so as to ensure that the majority of Kenyans, especially the youth don’t vote in the December elections.

The excuses being given by the authorities concerned is even laughable, they claim that there has been a shortage of materials since mid last year and that this is the only thing that has delayed the process of producing the vital documents. One wonders what became of the rapid response initiative that the government keeps on talking about.

Maybe the government spokesman should take other top ministry officials for lessons on how to lie with a straight face or crucial teachings on how to tell plausible half-truths that even the average intelligent Kenyan can somehow believe.

All About Hayfield

Message from our sponsors
Hayfield dental care is perhaps the best dental facility in Virginia as all its dentists have perfect records with the Virginia board of dentistry with a history of zero complaints. This is probably due to the fact that they have all undergone specialty and advanced training and can perform any dental related procedure without referring patients to other facilities. The office employs a full time orthodontics specialist who's consultations are provided for free to both adults and children. Hayfield Dental Care has been serving the people of Alexandria and its environs for the past two decades and there could be no better place in Virginia to get the best in dental care.

Why The Mungiki Were Present In Kenya Before '63?

That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done,
And there is nothing new under the sun.
Is there anything of which it may be said,
"See, this is new"?
It has already been in ancient times before us.

Ecclesiastes 1:9-10

The 1950s were dangerous times in colonial Kenya mainly because a new oath-taking organization had sprung up literally from nowhere and caused great fear amongst Kenyans in the colony. I say Kenyans because nobody was spared. Members of the settler community were brutally murdered and native African collaborators would also lose their heads.

At one time the group sent a chilling threat to a man called Johnstone Kamau who abhorred violence and was rumoured to have condemned the movement. Mr Kamau promptly changed his ways. You just did not mess up with this terror gang.

Kumekucha's impossible dream?

Just the right candidate for Westlands

Editor's note; It has humbled me today to realize that most Kenyans are just now learning that the bone of contention between the government over the constitutional reforms is the infamous 50 plus one proposed law which the opposition have cheekily said is non-negotiable. Kumekucha readers had this info weeks ago. The proposed law which will require a presidential candidate to garner 50% of the votes cast plus one will really mess up the incumbent's well laid plans for re-election. I though it would cheer you up to know how ahead you are reading Kumekucha daily.
=============================
This man Johnstone Kamau was to later be widely known by Kenyans as Jomo Kenyatta (actually a nick name that ended up sticking that mainly emerged from the Masai belt the young fashionable man was fond of wearing.) The terror group came to be widely known as the Mau Mau.

Fast forward to the late 1990s and yet another brand new terror group sprung up in Kenya. It came to be known as Mungiki.

The similarities between Mau Mau and Mungiki are uncanny. They are those know-it-all-types who regularly read this blog who will loudly and abusively protest the comparison between Mungiki and Mau Mau. Mau mau, they will say was a noble freedom fighting group. The facts are that at the time, Mau mau were seen as nothing but a terror gang of mostly dreadlocked snuff-consuming mad men who liked living in the forest like wild animals. In fact the Mau Mau were not nationalists fighting for independence but was in fact a group of persons mainly from one ethnic group fighting in the only way they knew how to have their stolen land returned to them. Still it is accurate that the Mau Mau rebellion was a major contributing factor to bringing the reluctant colonial government to the negotiation table for what finally led to independence.

But there are those who insist that Kenya was never really liberated from the clutches of oppressive colonial rule. What simply happened was that the colonial master changed from a white land grabber to a black indigenous colonial master. We widely refer to this group today as the political ruling class.

If you want to confirm the fact that little has changed in Kenya, just take a trip to the plush Karen suburb in the outskirts of Nairobi. You will be shocked. This is the land of endless opportunity where failures with no talent have for decades arrived penniless and ended up making a brand new life for themselves. It is difficult to convince many of the indigenous Kenyans who work in these homes that things have changed for the better since the 1950s. That Kenya is an independent African state where Kenyans should jivunia kua Mkenya. In fact they will understand you better when you tell them that Navumilia Kua Mkenya.

Although many African Kenyans have moved into the Karen suburb in recent years, they have never penetrated the mzungu community there where today, over 40 years since the Union Jack was lowered for the last time, we still have parties where the only black faces are waiters and waitresses serving food and cooks sweating it out in the Kitchens. That's independent Kenya for you.

There is no denying the fact that most White Europeans have no respect for indigenous local African Kenyans. I personally know of a company close to the city mortuary in Nairobi where locals are treated like something the cat dragged in. Yet many of the Whites in management positions at the firm don't even have work permits.

But white people are not the only oppressors of Kenyans. The ruling class who are the same colour of skin as most indigenous Kenyans are. Even as you read this, members of this class are still regularly grabbing land from widows, the defenseless and the weak. Members of this class are the most vocal and opinionated when the issue of street hawkers is discussed. But hold on a minute, how did these guys make their money?

You already know the answer to that question. It is from corruption of course.

This is the environment (not very different from that of 1952) that has birthed a violent terror group called Mungiki.

But yesterday in Kiambu, the Mungiki wars were caught in camera and in full view of Kenyans in their living rooms, we saw what our country has been reduced to, even as we loudly shout the names of certain individuals in the ruling class as being the best candidates for president.

Touts and drivers in the area gave the police a week to deal with the Mungiki failure of which they would take the law into their own hands. That deadline expired yesterday and we saw a suspected Mungiki member being bludgeoned to death. This amazing footage was captured by a KTN camerman positioned on the roof of some building and making excellent use of the amazing zoom-in capabilities of the latest broadcast quality video cameras.

Now all we need to do is wait for the inevitable Mungiki legendary revenge attacks which will surely come. When will all this blood-letting stop? Is there a government in Kenya?

Mungiki Secrets

The Mungiki for all intents and purposes is a secret terror organization. Their real objective is to fight for a livelihood and respectable living for the its’ members amongst the downtrodden masses of Kenya.

In the hopelessness that is the Kenya of today, it is not difficult for the group to get a steady stream of recruits amongst the youth of Kenya.

The government collects taxes and the resulting corruption puts that money into the pockets of a few people. The law allows a Member of Parliament to enact a law that legally allows them to "loot" close to Kshs 800,000 of tax payers money every month. So who will enact a law for the ordinary Kenyan who is out of a job to collect just enough from the same pot to put food on the table when they are out of work?

That is why the Mungiki opt to collect taxes of their own to enable them earn a livelihood and fend for themselves. They actually see no wrong in that. And as much as this is against the "law", when you look at scandals like Anglo Leasing and Goldenberg and the obscene salaries of MPs, you quickly find that any argument you may have had is greatly weakened.

What makes the whole Mungiki issue so complex and confusing is that they usually do not have any qualms taking money from politicians for “political odd jobs” like intimidating people etc. To them this is just another profit center and they do not see any contradiction between doing this and their objectives.

I interviewed a former Mungiki leader in 2002 and he told me that once somebody has joined the secret organization, it is impossible to leave. There is the oath that they take which makes them fearless and death is not a big deal anymore. That is what makes them so dangerous. And that is exactly what made Mau Mau so dangerous in the 1950s. The punishment for deserters and traitors is the same for Mungiki as it was for Mau mau. You get your head separated from the rest of your body, pure and simple.

He also confirmed to me that the Mungiki undergo some form of military training in secret locations that are mostly deep in the forest. They are then worn to secrecy and that is why so little is known of the organization to this day. In fact most Kenyans are convinced that this is just a disorganized group of blood-thirsty young men and wonder why the police have such difficulties in dealing with them.

The only way to deal with Mungiki once and for all is for a new government in Kenya to address the root cause of its' very existence which is the hopelessness that we have reduced most citizens of this great nation to.

If that approach is not taken, then we will continue with the crisis management strategy that has been used ineffectively for years now.

In other words only a true second liberation in Kenya will result in the Mungikis coming out of the forest or the organization running out of steam. Sadly the strategy used to crash the Mau Mau in 1952 will not work this time round.

So Now You Know Why Ndura Waruinge Wants The Langata Seat

In view of the information that you have read in my other posts today, it would contradict the common belief as to why ndura Waruinge would be interested in the Langata seat. It has nothing to do with the fact that Raila Odinga is the MP.

It is because Mr Waruinge has vast experience form his Mungiki past on rapidly building networks amongst the poor and disadvantaged and especially in recruitment. It is fairly easy to see what his campaign strategy would be.

It would only yield one result; total chaos with plenty of bloodshed.

Fimbo Ya Kalonzo

While campaigning in the Rift Valley province, presidential aspirant Kalonzo Musyoka was spotted carrying a Fimbo-ya-Nyayo-like stick around with him.

So what does this mean? Critics of the presidential aspirant will quickly point to this being a clear message that Kalonzo wants to usher in another Nyayo era, or is it error? Staunch supporters of the fomer Kanu kingpin will tell us that it is the statesmanship qualities in Kalonzo coming out. Similar to one of his role models, the original fimbo-carrying campaigner, one Daniel Arap Moi.

Keen analysts will tell you that one of the most important things a winning presidential candidate must do to convince the masses to vote for them is to look presidential. Another presidential aspirant, pastor Pius Muiru tried to do it by stage-managing a carefully choreographed sequence that appeared on the national TV news of him being welcomed with flowers and traditional dancers followed by a motorcade exit.

Have Kalonzo's handlers opted for the rungu he was seen carrying around somewhere in the Rift Valley this week?

Kumekucha's Impossible Dream?

I would like to appeal to readers to ignore the increasing number of comments in this blog trying very hard to discredit this blogger by linking him to certain groupings or comparing him to certain discredited news sources. We have a pretty good idea where they are coming from.

So who pays the bills for Kumekucha?

I can assure you that certainly, no interest group does. Basically I finance my own operations from other online businesses that the Almighty has blessed me with. So I do not support Raila or any other presidential candidate currently in the race for State House. We have our own candidate, a person who has never been in politics before but whom we feel understands this country enough to drive forward the only agenda that matters to Kenya, that of the ordinary voiceless, long suffering ordinary people of Kenya.

My personal political views are rather radical and should be obvious to regular readers of this blog. We urgently need brand new political leadership in Kenya and the best thing would be for us to get a brand new set of 210 new faces into parliament this time round. People who have never been in the August house before. That is our best bet for ensuring a genuine new beginning. It has often been said that the best thing for Kenya now is for us to concentrate on one term presidents from different parts of the country until we find the leadership we are looking for. I agree with that view and believe that it should also be extended to MPs as well.

These views clearly mean that this blog is NOT supporting Raila for president nor any other currently-seating MP.

These views may also sound very far-fetched and an unattainable dream. But so did a local indigenous government back in early 1960 when Tom Mboya and company were in the final stages of haggling with the colonial government for a bigger say in the running of things. In fact at one point Mboya's father wondered aloud whether he (Mboya) really thought he would win against the white man who had invented something like a plane, a machine that flew in the sky. Did Mboya really think he had the brains to outsmart and defeat such a clever person?

In the same way, I assure you my impossible noble dream for the people of Kenya will come to pass sooner that you ever thought possible. Who in their right minds in early 1960 would have thought that Kenya would be independent by as early as 1963?

In this blog we have a policy of listening to anybody and everybody. The danger of that is that some people attribute the comments made by readers to me. It is important for readers to learn how to make a clear distinction between posts made by me, like this one you are reading and the comments that usually follow below. Mainly because in many cases some comments are made with a hidden agenda that is clearly contrary to what we are trying to achieve here.

Finally I would like to appeal to all our noble readers to rise to the occasion and grab this chance to make history and create a better tomorrow for our beloved country. Many of us who read this site have been privileged all our lives to have gone to very good schools and Ivy League universities. A lot of the cash that went into our education was corruption money. We can't change that. But we can certainly change the future by displaying more empathy to the ordinary folk and the daily struggle they have to go through to survive. To do this we will need to abandon all support for the current ruling class and known politicians whom we know deep down will only ensure that the status quo is maintained. We honestly cannot expect change from them.

We the small percentage of Kenyans with access to the Internet should use this amazingly powerful tool as a voice for the voiceless masses of Kenya. We should also raise our voices selflessly on behalf of others less privileged than ourselves. I always say that if you want to get a glimpse of what most Kenyans go through, just skip your lunch and supper today and drink only water until tomorrow. Then you will begin to understand.

Apart from fasting frequently, I also usually try very hard to use a pit latrine regularly; it helps me stay sober and on course when writing about this great country of ours (did you know that the vast majority of Kenyans have never known any other kind of toilet?). I will not dare suggest the same for you, some of your knees would buckle under the sheer weight (I kid you not.)

Westlands Constituency 2007: Focus on The Emerging Candidates

I intend to start giving free publicity in this blog to the sort of candidates that I believe Kenya needs right now. Dancan Muhindi is an excellent example. In fact I strongly feel that he should be convinced to throw in his hat for MP. Read on and decide for yourself.

Dancan Muhindi: Declaration 2007

Email Announcement

Dear friends,
I hope this finds you well.

I'll not pretend as many aspiring politicians often do, that they've suddenly heard "the call of the people" to be their elected leader. We all know many of them who have "succumbed" to these "appeals" and gone into elective politics for their own ends. I'll not attempt to use those lines.

I'm just a guy who is tired of complaining and whining that things are not working, that the systems in our country are messed up and we need radical change. I'm a guy who has decided not to engage any more in verbal debates and arguments on why we need "new blood" and "new faces", in Kenya's leadership.

I'm tired of listening to lots of people complain and say, "What we need in Kenya is fresh, young and talented leadership." To be honest, I'm actually one of those people who have been talking like that for years!

The funny thing is, none of us complainers and whiners have been willing to be those "young, fresh and talented leaders" we all yearn for. We would rather watch from the comfort of the sidelines and not "dirty our hands."

Meanwhile, the same names we've had since 1963 keep popping up during elections, laughing all the way to power. Without any questions, we humbly accept their advice that we are the "leaders of tomorrow."

Well, am just tired of it all. I've decided to put my money where my mouth is and not wait for this elusive "tomorrow." I'm therefore going to present myself humbly to the good people of Kileleshwa ward as a candidate for Councillor during this-years' general elections in December.

The first time I told a few people about my intentions of becoming a Nairobi Councillor, I was not surprised when they burst out laughing. Their reaction was a
serious confirmation of just how low, these elected local government representatives are regarded by the majority of Nairobians, and indeed many Kenyans.

The focus in every Election has always been on Presidential and Parliamentary candidates. This has helped many council candidates with dubious credentials to evade serious scrutiny by the voters. More often than not, they get elected through the now famous "3-piece suit" system, with disastrous consequences on the management of our local authorities.

A simple survey I carried out amongst my friends and relatives showed that none of them could name their local Councillor! Despite the fact that Nairobi City Council is composed of 55 elected and 20 nominated Councillors, none of my buddies could name more than five.

This is a reflection of the general apathy by Kenyan urban voters towards these representatives, yet they are at the grass roots of our governance systems that we keep complaining about.

Some friends initially asked me, between hysterical bursts of laughter, why of all things, I would want to be a Councillor. "Member of Parliament, yes, makes sense, but aspiring to be a mere councillor, whats up dude?"

I understand where they are coming from. After all, am a well-educated ICT professional working for an International NGO with good career prospects, and currently studying for an M.A. at the University of Nairobi. Seriously speaking, the radical job switch actually entails a drastic income reduction for myself!

I plan to set up an interactive blogspot this July, to answer these questions and engage Kileleshwa voters on various issues in the lead up to the elections in December 2007. The blog will also aim to provide compelling reasons why we Nairobians, especially the professionals in various sectors, should rethink our complacency when it comes to the workings of civic authorities.

I believe that by setting up this blog and running for the position of Nairobi Councillor, I'll have contributed in a small way, to focusing my fellow citizens
on the calibre of leaders running our local authorities. This is much better than just complaining and waiting for the emergence of "young, fresh and talented leadership" to reform our country.

For the young and the not-so young reformers in Kenya aspiring for leadership positions, this blog will offer a slightly different view on why the best way to reform our country should start at our County, Municipal and City councils, rather than in Parliament.

Please join me in this blog discussion once it is set up. I would like to hear your comments and suggestions regarding the proposed way into public office for "the leaders of tomorrow." I welcome your valuable contributions to these thoughts and aspirations. In the meantime, you can also email me with your comments and ideas.

I realise that the journey ahead is not going to be easy. I've already started the ground work and I believe the challenges can be overcome with concerted effort. I would like to appeal to all of you, as my friends (and potential voters!) :o) to join my campaign and help get me elected into the Nairobi city council.

The easiest and first step is to register as a voter, or transfer your vote to Kileleshwa ward, Westlands constituency, at the following polling stations:

1. Kileleshwa Primary School.

2. St. Mary's School.

3. Salvation Army Children's Home (Off Musa Gitau Rd, Waiyaki Way - Waruku).

4. Westlands C.T.R (Rhapta Road)

The ECK started voter registration from 1st to 31st March 2007. These polling stations are already operational. Please feel free to bring along your family and as many friends or acquaintances as you can.

Thanking you in advance, I look forward to your support this year! :o)

Regards,

Dancan Muhindi

Mere Coincidence Or Careful Deliberate Tribal Appointments By Kibaki?

For months now Kenyans have been complaining that the Kibaki administration has been making deliberate tribal appointments. But nobody really cared to look too closely into these claims that were mainly attributed to ODM supporters criticizing for the sake of it.
=============================
Other stories published today;
Tribal appointments email that has been widely circulated

More Evidence Of Kibaki's Appointments Strategy?

Was this fair to KTN?

Mayor may now have to be a university graduate.

Daily nominations for the best comment
=============================
So most people dismissed and ignored the claims. Even a post in this blog a few weeks ago was received with a lot of skepticism. Part of the reason is that although Kenyans were prepared to criticize Kibaki for many things, nobody wanted to believe that he had also become a tribalist. This is not the official leader of the opposition that Kenyans once thought they knew, admired and respected.

However everything suddenly changed with the appointment of the new Central Bank governor. Kenyans suddenly started paying attention and scrutinizing government appointments. What they have found has shocked many. In fact there is an email that has been widely circulated that contains a long list of Kibaki appointments with most being from the Kikuyu tribe and the rest from the expansive Mount Kenya region that has been the President's stronghold for years. (see email in this post).

What is really worrying is the fact that the Kibaki appointments strategy seems to mostly focus on key areas of government. One such area is the media. The media is critical in an election year such as the one we are in. Keen media analysts have been warning for weeks now that key media is firmly in the hands of the President's handlers. In effect, going into the elections the President will be much more effective than Moi was in his hey days with full control of KBC and censorship through threats of other important privately owned media.

The result is that the opposition will be caught flat-footed and in effect the outcome of the general elections has already been decided by a pro-Kibaki media.

Just check this out. This list includes both direct appointments and appointments that many believe have been influenced in one way or another by State House. The corridors of power have also encouraged certain appointments that were made prior to 2003 but which favored them to be upheld and maintained at all costs;

Ministry of Information
Minister - Mutahi Kagwe (Kibaki's home boy)

Nation Media Group
Recently appointed CEO- Linus Wang'ombe Gitahi (Nyeri Kibaki's home boy). There are those who have insisted that this was one appointment that was pushed through by State House for purposes of the coming general elections. Already we have seen this giant media house flexing its' muscles. The result was that the arrest and harassment of one of the best crime writers Kenya has ever produced and a former Nation crime editor, Stephen Muiruri was given an effective media blackout. What else is in the forthcoming long list of items to receive a news blackout going into the general elections?

Group Editorial Director (this post is crucial being the heart of all content that is published and aired by all NMG outlets) - Wangethi Mwangi (Murang'a)

Daily Nation's Managing Editor - Bernard Nderitu (Kiambu - where Njenga Karume comes from)

Sunday Nation's Managing Editor - Mutuma Mathiu (Mt. Kenya, Meru - backyard of Kibaki's men Kiraitu, Mwiraria etc)

The new Business Daily's Managing Editor - Nick Wachira (Nyeri)

The Standard Group
CEO – Paul Wanyaga (Karatina - Kibaki's home boy)

Ownership of Standard group - Retired President Moi - a key ally of Kibaki

KBC (Kenya Broadcast Corporation)

MD - David Waweru (Nyeri)

Editor in Chief (A VERY POWERFUL POST) - Waithaka Waihenya (Kiambu - Njenga Karume's home boy).

Capital FM
Owner - Chris Kirubi (Kibaki's man)

KissFM
Owner – The Kittony family close relatives of retired President Moi, a key Kibaki ally.

KamemeFM
Owner - Rose Kimotho (From Nyeri and a close ally of Linus Gitahi). She gets good contracts from Government and has been instrumental in doing damage control for the Kibaki regime to ensure Kibaki Abaki (returns) so that she continues getting rich at the rapid current rate.

Royal Media
Owner - Macharia

This media house had better just change its' name to Royal Kibaki Media Services.

All senior positions in this company are filled by people from Mt Kenya
All royal media outlets (countless FM radio stations, TV station, newspaper and an unknown number of used airwaves) were so openly biased during last General Elections, the referendum and in all their news bulletins that it was embarrassing just to watch and listen.

As you can see from the pattern, all the key and influential media houses are owned and the key positions in the same media houses are held by people from Mt Kenya. They are all either close to Kibaki or to his friend and ally of many years, Njenga Karume.

Email On Tribal Appointments That Has Been Circulating

Here is a widely circulated email that has been doing the rounds, highlighting Kibaki tribal appointments. The President's handlers should not ignore this trend now emerging (which is exactly what happened in the run up to referendum) where anti-Kibaki emails are beginning to circulate with a vengeance. They have to come up with a counter-strategy that is not tribal and they have to do so pronto.

Dear Friends,
Please give me a minute......
Since the days of the great economist Adam Smith, it has come to be accepted globally that there cannot be true development without participation of the people. Any approach that exclusively concentrates on statistics at the expense of the people would result into 'human beings being seen only as instruments of production rather than as free entities for whose welfare and cultural advance the increased production is intended...' (See Five-Year Perspective, 1960- 1964, UN Doc. E/3347/Rev. 1, Para. 90 (1960))
In Kenya, unfortunately, we have hyped so much the statistical 5.8 economic growth without asking ourselves who is participating in and therefore benefiting from that growth!! In deed you don't have to be a special branch (or is it NSIS) agent to know the beneficiaries of the Kenyan economy. A close look at the public service appointments and the buyers of privatised public institutions will tell you how Kibaki is using his entrusted position to sell Kenya to his tribesmen at the expense of the rest of Kenyans!! (see below)
And yet he claims to be an economist-------
Even moi who was a non-economist tried to involve all Kenyans in the little development in the KANU era!....
It is no wonder that the people selling the statistical development record of Kibaki as a campaign tool are the very beneficiary from Kibaki's tribe!....
Kenya is for all of us!! We must all benefit equally from the rich resources that God has endowed our country with. We must therefore stand up and say no to tribalists like Kibaki who believe that Kenya is made up of only his tribesmen!!

Kenya is for Kenyans of all tribes, colour and creed not just Kikuyus or people from Central or GEMA! Shame on Kibaki. Atoke kabisa! We have no more space for tribalists.
And just for those who may dismiss this piece as mere propaganda see the FACTs below!!

More Evidence of Key Appointments Strategy?

Is it mere coincidence that during the tenure of former President Moi, the CCK (Communications Commission of Kenya) was headed by a Kalenjin and now under Kibaki, it is a Kikuyu at the helm?

Interestingly, during the Kibaki administration the Postal Corporation of Kenya docket seems to have become a preserve of the Luo community. The current Postmaster general is Fred (we used to call him "Nigga" in school) Odhiambo.

It is like heading a large multi-national corporation and then appointing those close to you to head the Information technology division (equivalent of CCK) and then naming other insignificants for cosmetic reasons to the stationary division (equivalent of Postal Corporation Of Kenya). IT is in and it is the future while stationary is rapidly dwindling because of the widespread use of computers, folks hardly need letterheads in the quantities they previously required them in. In fact we are fast heading towards a paperless office (so what will stationary shops sell in future if even paper clips will be obsolete?)

It is common knowledge that the P.O. Box era is rapidly coming to an end and this is the reason why the Postal corporation has been struggling to reposition itself and find a new identity and viable profit center. To his credit Mr Odhiambo has recently overseen the bold launch of a new money transfer service, sadly as you read this, it is being swifly wiped out by the Safaricom new M-Pesa money transfer service that is so cheap to use that it is unbelievable. Sample this. To send up to Kshs 35,000 to a registered M-Pesa account holder costs only 30 bob (yep, 30 Kenya shillings, this is not a typo).

So what are we saying here? That if the next president of Kenya is Kalonzo, we will see a Kamba heading the CCK and if it is Raila we will see a Mr Odhiambo heading it?

Was This Fair To KTN?

Everybody knows that despite the ownership of the Standard group, there is no love lost between the Kibaki administration and this media house.

Was that why somebody walked into the Standard group and in one single swipe plucked out all the senior news anchors? It is instructive that during the notorious raid on the Standard by hooded gunmen, the policemen carrying it out specifically asked for Njoroge Mwaura (who had left minutes before) and now he is the only one who has not been plucked out by Citizen from KTN. That one cannot be a mere coincidence, I assure you.

So what information did Mwaura have that attracted attention from the police?

In fact Mwaura looks fairly lonely these days reading the news with novices and guys younger than his children. (The Catherine Kasavuli and Njoroge Mwaura combination was perfect and it is sad that it has come to an end). Incidentally with all due respect to Catherine, it seems that now would be a good time to retire anyway. I have documentary proof on tape of her stammering and hesitant during prime time news. I am not surprised at the angry comments that greeted my earlier post where I said this. Ms Kasavuli is loved by Kenyans, amazingly she is the only Kenyan I know who has grown prettier with the years.

But my question is, even if you raid a competitor, shouldn't you at least give them time to reorganize? It will be very hard for anybody to convince me that there was no ill-motive intended here.

Meanwhile Kenyans wait with bated breath to see the KTN News anchors on air at Citizen, which will happen from the beginning of April. Maybe the first thing the professionals should do is advice the Citizen management that red or orange or whatever that screaming background color they use is, is not a colour that is conducive to TV broadcasting.

Mayor May Now Have To Be A University Graduate

If the Election Bill 2007 sails through as it is, then it means that future mayors in Kenya will have to be university graduates with 10 years management experience that is relevant to the management of a local authority.

This university graduates requirement first came up in the Ghai draft constitution for the highest office in the land and now it has re-emerged for a lower office. The reason why it surprises me is that apart from the fact that Kenya will be one of the very few countries in the world, if not the only one to enact such a law, it also displays a very clear lack of knowledge of the crux of our problems in Kenya. Coming from the civil society, whom I am told had a lot of input in this bill, this worries me very much.

Our problem is not that our leaders are not well educated; the big problem is that they all lack integrity and being well-educated does not automatically give a person leadership qualities.

Probably the best illustration of this is the Kibaki presidency. I heard several comments after the 2002 elections (and I am ashamed to say that I was one of the people who strongly concurred) to the effect that things in Kenya were going to improve dramatically since we now had an educated person at the helm. One elderly man called Kibaki Mwalimu wa maprofessor (referring to his stint as a lecturer at Makere University before Tom Mboya fetched him in a VW all the way from Kampala to be Kanu's first executive officer in the early 60s.

Not only has this theory been proved dead wrong but we have seen the Mwalimu wa maprofessor seeking help in governing from a person who never saw the inside of a high school (let alone a university campus) in former President Moi.

In my view passing such a law requiring a mayor to be a graduate can cause a lot of trouble in Kenya because it will further widen the gap between the rich and the poor. Only the rich can afford to take their children up to University in the current system we have in Kenya. So in many ways, this small clause is another way of ensuring that the ruling class is able to comfortably hand over power to their children with little competition from others.

There are many examples of people without a university degree making exceptionally good leaders and professionals. I will give just three examples. John Major, former British Prime Minister never saw the inside of a university. Closer to home, outgoing KCB CEO who has managed an amazing turnaround at one of Kenya's largest bank is not a university graduate. Yet there are few people who know more about managing a bank successfully than Terry Davidson.

If we still insist on passing such a clause then we should start at the top with the highest office in the land and insist that the president has to be a university graduate.

The Question Of President Kibaki's Security

The World Cross-country championships came and went peacefully and without incident in Mombasa.

An interesting aside here is that our local team opted for Mombasa to make full use of the home advantage since they were sure other competitors would be very uncomfortable in the humid Mombasa climate, which the locals would find much easier to acclimatize to. What they did not bargain for was the weather being extraordinarily hot and humid. Mombasa residents report that in recent weeks, conditions at the coastal town have been the hottest and most humid witnessed in years and toddlers and young children who are not new to the coastal city are still ending up with painful heat rashes all over their bodies. So it was not surprising that pre-race favorite, Kenenisa Bekele gave up and dropped out of the race. In fact virtually every Kenyan athlete interviewed by the press later, complained about the heat.

=========================================
But on to my main point here, which is security. Actually the security arrangements in Mombasa this past weekend were unprecedented in the history of Kenya. Families in one entire block of houses too close to the venue were moved to hotels (well over 500 units of houses I total) and the government of Kenya paid for their temporary accommodation and food. They were asked to lock up their houses and leave for the weekend as an entire block was cleared for security reasons. (I wonder what the total bill for the event was, it has to be a lot higher than the Kshs 400 million figure given in the press).

The crack, well-trained paramilitary GSU oversaw the whole operation with a lot of help from various departments of the Kenyan armed forces. It was a job well done, Kudos to the organizers and all those who were responsible.

Then somebody started circulating all sorts of rumours in town to keep people away from the Island on Saturday. It was said that police would arrest anybody who showed up in the city center with bedroom slippers (very laughable rumour but some Coastal folk took it very seriously). It was also whispered that the police were out to arrest and lock up for the weekend anybody looking like a Muslim (that would mean arresting fairly large chunk of the Mombasa population). Still this did not stop a fairly large crowd turning up to cheer the Kenyan runners on, as they easily clichéd the group title.

I still maintain that it was an unnecessary risk for the President to have been in Mombasa and I also insist that those charged with the president's security need to pull up their socks.

A reader of this blog who seems to be fairly familiar with the president's security arrangements pointed out here that the same people charged with former president Moi's security are the same people looking after President Kibaki. This is definitely not true simply because the leadership has changed. You don't see that bald headed guy anymore (I forget his name, although it was closely guarded secret).

Then there is also the fact that a president's security is as good as the president's own security consciousness. President Museveni of Uganda is the most security-minded of the three East African president's and it is clearly reflected in his security arrangements.

President Moi found himself in the middle of a botched up coup-attempt to topple him in 1982 and it is said that from then henceforth he became paranoid about his security. This was a far cry from the 1981 when it is said that the president slipped out of State House, Nairobi alone and took a walk to the Nairobi University. He later told his furious security detail who had been sweating blood looking for him, that his protection was in the Kenyan people and as long as he was with the people, he was safe. After August 1982, there is plenty of evidence that President Moi changed his views dramatically on this issue.

The problem with President Kibaki is that nothing alarms him. Therefore he over rules many of his excellent security advisors on many key issues. I have a feeling that this Mombasa trip was one of the instances where he over-ruled advice given to him.

Behavioral experts will tell you that people are as alert and effective as their leadership is. Thus it is hardly surprising that this don't-care attitude seems to have permeated from the highest authority in the land, down to his security heads and right down to the foot soldiers and ordinary police officers who find themselves on duty as part of the security detail when the president is passing somewhere.

This explains the laxity and security breach when my man was able to approach the motorcade carrying a huge yellow paper bag. I assure you that would NOT have been allowed during the Moi days.

This blogger is as patriotic as they come, and in fact more so. And my pointing out this laxity is not criticism for the sake of it but hopefully a wake up call for those responsible to put their act together.

We should not forget that the mood with one of our neighbors has shifted dramatically in recent times. It is widely believed amongst the Somalian community both here and in Somalia (actually there is no difference between the two; Somalians are Somalians, whether they are in Kenya or Somali or Puntland) that the Kenyan government aided the Americans with intelligence and logistical support in the American air raids and bombings of villages where scores of innocent women and children died. The facts, whatever they are, are not important in this case, what matters is what is believed on the ground.

This is an issue that should not be taken lightly and is a great danger to our national security as a country. It is important that in the future we display more responsibility than we did last weekend in Mombasa. This is not about petty internal politics between ODM and Narc-Kenya.
