Nairobi Businessman Shot 15 Times On Forest Road

UpdateMystery has deepened over the execution-style shooting of Nairobi businessman Paul Ngugi Kariuki on Wednesday night. Police now say that 13 shots (and not 15) were fired and yet no single spent cartridge was recovered from the scene.

This could only mean that the gunmen took their time to carefully clean up the scene of crime afterwards. The incident was at 11 pm (another detail that has changed), which means that it was dark and this could have made the task even more difficult with flashlights.

This further raises questions about the female companion the businessman was with at the time now identified as Susan Wambura Riziki, a hairdresser. Mr Kariuki had told his wife earlier that evening on phone that he would be late as he was attending meetings. Contrary to earlier reports Ms Riziki only received a minor bruise on the chin. So was she a witness? Did she see anything?

Clearly this execution was carried out by professionals who were keen not to leave any evidence or witnesses behind.

The businessman has now been linked to a Shs 95 million land fraud case.

A Businessman was shot 15 times as he slowed down at a bump on Forest Road in the early hours of this morning at about 2am.

Should al Shabaab Threats To America In Latest Video Be Taken Seriously?

About two weeks ago Somali-based terror group al Shabaab released a video where they specifically pointed to certain targets in the West for possible terror attacks.

The big question in the US now is whether the group is capable of carrying out attacks so far from Somalia. Interestingly although the State Department designated the group as a foreign terrorist organization as far back as in March 2008, there are Americans who are hearing the al Qaeda linked name for the first time. One commentator on a CNN blog even boldly stated that he thought it was the name of a rap music group. This kind of ignorance can be dangerous because when a group is designated a foreign terrorist organization, according to the US law, it becomes illegal for a person in the United States to knowingly provide that group with money, communications equipment, weapons or explosives or to even join it.

Probably the most worrying issue in all this is the fact that al Shabaab has been very actively recruiting Americans for a number of years now. Which means that an attack on US soil may not be as difficult to execute as some analysts may want to think.

A South African Lab has confirmed to family members that the body found in the man eaters area of Tsavo National Park and now lying in a morgue in Voi is indeed that of ICC witness Meshack Yebei.

Kenyan police have said they can only release the results (which was a 99.9% match) after they are officially received and confirmed by the government chemist.

This ends the distress of the Yebei family who have twice (on separate occasions and locations) positively identified a body as that of Yebei's.

Yebei's naked body was discovered by a forest ranger on patrol in the vast Tsavo East national park apparently moments before a hyena was set to feast on it.

3 Al Shabaab Arrests Over Mall Threats

Mercifully Kenya has not witnessed any major terrorist attack for some time. Some analysts claim that the terror group al Shabaab has greatly been weakened. It would seem that the continued presence of KDF in Somalia as well as constant drone attacks by the US army, one of which killed the former terror groups' supremo Ahmed Godane, have borne fruit.

But a few hours ago police exploded into action and arrested two men and a woman in connection to a planned mall attack by al Shabaab in Canada. This comes shortly after security officials a few days ago warned shoppers in Canada, the United States and Britain to be on guard after al Shabaab terrorists posted a video calling for attacks on Western malls. Interestingly some of the threats on the video were quite specific and one of the targets pointed out was Mall of America in the US state of Minnesota. Interestingly that state has the highest concentration of immigrant Somalis in the US.

In a shocking new development yesterday (Saturday) the Sierra Leone vice-president has been quarantined over Ebola fears. Mr. Sam-Sumana says that he had chosen to be quarantined to "lead by example" after the Ebola death of his bodyguard, John Koroma, a few days ago.

This is the highest ranking official to ever be quarantined over the deadly viral disease that seems to spread like wild fire.

Samuel Sam-Sumana said he would stay out of contact with others for 21 days as a precaution.

The Meshack Yebei Puzzle: 8 Solid Facts

This has to be one of the most puzzling whose-body-is-it mazes ever recorded in Kenya. Here are 8 Facts on the Meshack Yebei murder and body identification puzzle, can you solve the mystery and come up with a plausible theory?

1. A body found in the man eaters area of Tsavo National Park and taken to a Voi morgue on December 30th 2014 was yesterday (Fri 27th Feb) positively identified by his widow Lilian Yebei and his brother Rev Moses Kisorio as that of ICC witness Meshack Yebei (pictured above). DNA test pending.

2. This is the second time that the family are positively identifying a body as that of Meshack Yebei. The first time was in December 28th shortly after a body was fished out of River Yala in Nandi county 100KM from Yebei's home in Eldoret.

3. The ICC has said Yebei was not a prosecution witness in Ruto’s trial, but the court offered him safe residency abroad anyway. Yebei accepted this for a time but recently opted to go back to his home town in the Rift Valley, it said.

4. Yebei had been contacted during the course of investigations for the Ruto-Sang trial but he was ultimately not included in the witness list, the office of the ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said.

5. Yebei was linked to the trial of Deputy President William Ruto and was implicated in efforts to corrupt witnesses, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has said. Prosecutors reiterated they had not been planning to call the man, Meshack Yebei, as a witness because of this.

6. The ICC described the witnesses as being "under siege" from "a network of individuals" using bribes or threats to dissuade him from testifying.
 
7. After his disappearance, Yebei’s mother received a text message purporting to be from her son saying that he was safe in Uganda with ICC officials. The court said its officials had not been in contact with Yebei at the time of his abduction.

8. Yebei was on opposite political sides with deputy President Ruto in 2007. Ruto was in ODM and Yebei was a PNU pointman in Rift Valley.

Muchai Murder Suspect Says Police Injured His Private Parts In Torture Sessions

It would seem that police methods in Kenya have not changed. Simon Wambugu (sketched above) a suspect in the gruesome assassination of former Kabete MP George Muchai told the court this morning (Friday) that he had been tortured by police for a confession so much so that he has sustained serious injuries in his private parts. he requested that the court order that he be treated at his own expense by a private doctor. This request was denied and the court ordered that he be taken to Kenyatta National Hospital and a report on his condition be presented before the court.

In my view we really need that forensic lab pronto because police are currently caught between a rock and a hard place. There is pressure to fight crime even as we need to avoid human rights abuses. One would cringe just to imagine what the said suspect must be feeling if he is innocent?
