Injustice In Kenya: How The Rich And Influential Use Cops To Harass And Intimidate

A friend of mine told me a heart-rending story of how he owed someone Sh 1,500 but ended up paying Sh 4,000 after he was arrested by police and thrown into the cells for three harrowing days through the instigation of his debtor. He later learnt that the debt had been raised so as to cover bribe money for the police and other "expense."

Under such circumstances, the creditors' friends and relatives will raise the money as a matter of urgency as nobody wants his kin to spend time in police cells which are notorious for several nasty things starting from terrible skin diseases, to assaults and even deaths of inmates

This is just one of the hundreds if not thousands of similar cases that happen in this country every year as police are 'hired' by the rich and influential as well as anybody with the cash to spare, to do dirty work like debt collecting, extortion, framing an innocent person and so on as law enforcers look into ways of supplementing their meager income.

It is this same police force that is expected to be out there hunting down the dangerous criminals that are killing innocent mwananchi with impunity that have now resulted to being among other things, debt collectors and agents of extortionists.

Apparently, it is not only the junior policemen that have been sucked into this web of doing unscrupulous 'jobs' for those with cash as their senior's are also involved in these racket that has grossly affected the credibility of the police. Show me a Kenyan who trusts the police and I will show you blue grass.

Many thought that these injustices would end with former president Moi's era and everybody assumed that 2003 would mark a new beginning in many ways for Kenyans, majority of citizens couldn't have been further from the truth.

Then there are situations where the police themselves set the stage for the extortion especially in minor cases like simple assault. This is how it works. When you report that you have been assaulted, the police will go ahead and arrest the accused person and scare him or her that he could serve a stiff penalty in jail and it would be wise on his part to settle the matter while still in the hands of the police.

In such instances, the policemen act as the mediators where the complainant is convinced that its better to take money and run as court cases are lengthy and might not necessarily be ruled in your favor, on reaching a 'practical' amount, the accused is informed and advised by police that this is the best option.

Police could 'benefit' in two ways as they will ask the suspect for more money than the complainant wants and pocket the difference then go the other side and demand for a percentage from the complainant for 'helping him make money'.

The list is endless, the police, besides those in the traffic department have created ways of making money on the side at the expense of national security and with a boss in the name of the domineering, arrogant and deceitful John Michuki, the future of the force does not look particularly bright, whatever we are being told.

Police Harass Kitui Rights Activist

A rights activist , Mary Mbandi from Kitui has an extremely interesting story to tell. Over the weekend, she was arrested and held for several hours by police who accused her of having threatened the first lady through remarks she supposedly made recently.

She was later released unconditionally after the intervention of her colleagues and lawyers who questioned the circumstances under which she was arrested. She has vowed to sue the government for unlawful confinement.

Mbandi's arrest and subsequent release raises a lot of questions about the often abrasive and eccentric first lady, Lucy Kibaki who is known to take criticism very personally.

Her infamous night-long raid at Nation center that led to the assault of KTN cameraman, Clifford Derrick is still fresh in our minds including last years' incident where she had Limuru politician George Nyanja arrested and questioned by police after he hosted president Mwai Kibaki's supposed second wife, Mary Wambui and introduced her to the public as Wambui wa Mwai.

Back to Mbandi's story, what could possibly have happened is the activist might have made a joke about the first lady or could have criticized her in a public meeting and word got to the first lady through the intelligence system.

Whatever the activist said, it is far fetched to imagine she threatened lady Lucy. How can an ordinary Kenyan of supposedly sound mind threaten the wife of the commander-in-chief? Even if she was taken to court and charged with the offence, majority of Kenyans could have translated it as a simple case of harassment.

The first lady is known to be unpredictable and frequently attacked by violent mood swings which terrifies state house employees and when she is around, tension grips the prestigious address to the extent that even the holder of the highest office of the land is not spared.

It is said that the first lady has been under treatment over the past years having suffered from manic depression and she was put on drugs which if not taken, can result in eccentricity. As a matter of fact, the first lady has contributed to some of the ridiculous actions and decisions taken by the government over certain issues.

Remember the president addressing Kenyans from state house one evening on television only to tell us the composition of his family and assertions that he had only one wife. Who could have prompted him to call the media if not Lucy?

Unfortunately, Lucy's power is boundless to the extent that she impressed upon the president to eject his life long friend and confidant, Matere Keriri from his state house job as comptroller after she disagreed with the diminutive millionaire in Mombasa after he arranged for the president's mistress, Mary Wambui to travel to the coast ahead of the president's visit to Mombasa for the Christmas holidays.

It is an open secret among the ruling elite that the current comptroller of state house, Hyslop Ipu is mostly a frustrated man as most of his responsibilities including the presidents' diary has been taken over by the first lady who's authority goes unchallenged.

This being an election year, we expect to hear much more from the first lady taking into consideration that the president's second wife or is it mistress, Mary Wambui has started campaigning for Kibaki's re-election and she is getting a lot of good publicity to the chagrin of Lucy.

This may look like a small issue to any man but ask the womenfolk about it, they will tell you that such a scenario is bound to cause a world war as it is well known that hell has no fury like a woman scorned.

We Told You About Moi's Power And Antics Months Ago

Yesterday's issue of the Sunday Nation featured a detailed analysis of what political observers see as the 'hidden hand' of former President Moi in the politics of Kenya. Regular readers of this blog know that this is an issue that we have warned about repeatedly for months now.

However judging from the comments of most readers, most Kenyans do not believe that Moi has any significant influence in the country anymore. This is being naïve because having been in power for 24 years (add another 12 years as VP), the tentacles of influence of the former president reach every remote corner of this country.

Then you need to consider the fact that the former president is now free from time-consuming affairs of the state and can therefore concentrate on playing deadly "political chess" the whole day.

It is a little late in the day for Kenyans to now realize that the former president has carefully worked himself into that position where politically and in relation to the forthcoming general elections, given a toss up, he will win whether the coin lands on "heads" or "tails." In fact given the prevailing view that Moi is "harmless" plenty more damage will be done before most people wake up to what is really happening.

Shocking Revelations From Arrested Crime Editor Stephen Muiruri

Special Sunday Edition:

Evidence Emerges That Most Of The News You Get From Kenya's Most Trusted News Source Is Censored And "Doctored"

Former Nation newspapers crime editor Stephen Muiruri has just released a statement detailing his arrest a few days ago that lays bare some shocking details. So shocking and earth shattering are the revelations that this blogger has broken with tradition to publish on a Sunday.

Stephen Muiruri's Arrest: Writer Issues A Statement Repeating That His Life Is In Danger

Why Nation sex scandal must be seen in new light now
-----------------------
Just as was suspected, Muiruri's arrest was linked to the anonymous letters that have been circulating on the Internet alleging a sexual scandal at the largest media house in East and Central Africa, the Nation Media group.

There is now clear and irrevocable evidence that the daily media in Kenya usually censor what is published in line with various powerful interests. For instance Muiruri reveals that although all media houses were alerted by the Kenyan Human rights commission and were present during his arrest, all save Capital FM gave the incident a blackout. Only the People Daily and The Kenya Times carried a story on the incident the next day. He also points to another press conference called by the Kenya Union of Journalists a few weeks ago to address his resignation and the anonymous sex-scandal letters on the Internet, which was also given a total blackout. Such is the power of the Nation media group.

Interestingly the story of Muiruri's arrest was actually written by a Nation reporter but senior editor Joseph Odindo halted its' publication and the article was trashed. The big question Kenyans must now ask and answer for themselves based on the facts here is; how many other important stories of this nature are written and trashed on a daily basis. How much news has been blacked out, so that we, Kenyans will never know the truth?

It is incredulous to think that as dangerous criminals roam the streets, killing and maiming Kenyans, the resources of the CID should be so occupied chasing what can only be a civil case. It tells you a lot about the priorities of our top criminal investigation unit in Kenya. It seems that as ordinary wananchi suffer; those who are supposed to protect them are using tax-payers money and resources to be at the beck and call of the high and mighty.

Part of the problem we have in Kenya is that we have one media house that is just too powerful. So powerful that editors at the said media house, the Nation Media Group, have long acted in a manner that suggests that they are confusing themselves with God.

The writing is now clearly on the wall and we the people of Kenya need to do something very urgently to deal with this "monster" before it swallows up press freedom, our dreams and everything we hold dear. Can you imagine what will happen during the forthcoming general elections, with the sort of editorial policy that the Nation has? Apparently they also have the muscle and influence to easily kill a story in every other media house in the country. Fellow Kenyans please wake up and understand the gravity and implications of this!!

We must now forget the sex scandal (as horrifying as it is) and focus on the huge danger to Kenya and Kenyans that this "monster" poses as we head to the general elections. Millions of our countrymen still read the Nation as if it were the gospel truth and many believe that if something has not been published in the Nation, then it is not true. With the sort of manipulations and cover-ups going on over such a petty issue, one wonders what other cover-ups and manipulations of a greater magnitude and national nature are going on. I do not even want to think of the information that I have received recently (that I am still investigating) that certain recent appointments at the Nation were made with the intention of influencing the forthcoming general elections.

A thoughtful reader of this blog recently suggested a boycott of the Nation. I am giving the matter some deeper thought and prayer as well as exploring other options. Kenyans everywhere of goodwill should do the same so that we can come up with an effective way of fighting back. Remember that much more than the forthcoming polls is at stake here. Muiruri for instance has revealed that he has received at least two death threats. Fellow Kenyans we need to act quickly, if for nothing else, then to save the precious life of our brother. A very brave Kenyan who has already risked his life many times to ensure that we get to know the truth. How many times has he unearthed the truth when others deliberately wanted to mask it, as crime editor at the Nation?

It has been the habit of Kenyans not to care less when something happens to somebody else who is not their relative or close associate. That is how the Kanu regime managed to oppress us for so many years. Let us learn from the past and act swiftly this time. If you don't then you can be sure that today it is Stephen Muiruri and tomorrow it will be you.

To all concerned

RE: ARREST AND THREATS ON MY LIFE
I have decided to make a personal statement regarding the police raid at my private business and my arrest on March 14, 2007, through the instigation of top managers at Nation Media Group. I have decided to make this issue public for the sake of my safety and that of my family.

From the onset, I wish to state that I have no intentions to jeopardise the on-going high-level investigations by detectives from CID Headquarters in Nairobi regarding to whether I was part of the authors of the anonymous letters that have been circulating in the internet on NMG managers alleged to be involved in a string of sex affairs with junior staff.

At around 11 am on March 14, 2007, I was in my office in Parklands in Nairobi , from where I operate a tours and a safaris company, when Nation’s Security Manager, Mr Sam Koskei, burst into my office accompanied by about 15 detectives from CID Headquarters. From the onset, the head of the squad told me that I was under arrest. My staff and I were ordered to stop what we were doing and not to make any movement. The squad did not have a search warrant. Two of my clients who had come to sell a new internet concept they were marketing in Parklands area were caught in the drama, but they were released after being detained for two hours in my offices.

The detectives ransacked my offices for about two hours, shifting through drawers, cabinets and documents. They dismantled my computer and took it away. They also carried the business licences and a load of documents, including my letter of resignation from Nation Media Group. The letter was dated February 2, 2007. Up to now, the items seized are still being detained at CID Headquarters. The search was supervised and co-ordinated by Mr Koskei. Mr Koskei kept threatening and intimidating me.

While the search was going on, I called Mr Maina Kiai, the chairman of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, who happened to be out of country but I got him on his roaming telephone line. He immediately sent four of his top officers to my office. Mr Kiai’s team also mobilised journalists from all media houses, Nation included. However, only Capital FM went on air with the story of the raid and my arrest. The People Daily and the Kenya Times carried my story the next day. The other media houses, Nation included, gave the story a black out. The information I have is that the Nation reporter who had come to cover my arrest did a story but Mr Joseph Odindo, the Group Managing Editor, ordered for the story to be killed.

After the officers were through with the search at around 1pm, they whisked me to CID Headquarters and Mr Koskei followed us there in his vehicle. When we reached CID Headquarters, I was being treated like one of Kenya ’s most wanted criminal. I was even followed to the toilet by a police officer.

Mr Koskei only left CID Headquarters after the detectives told him his job was done. It was after Mr Koskei left that the officers relaxed and started treating me well. They could allow me to meet and consult Mr Njonjo Mue, a legal counsel from the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, and other officials from the Commission.

I then called my lawyer, Mr Paul Muite. Mr Muite held talks with senior detectives at CID Headquarters before he came to see me in the office I was being detained. The detectives who were holding me were courteous and they candidly told me that they arrested me on instigation of senior managers from Nation Media Group. I thank the detectives for treating me well and refusing to dance to the tune of Mr Koskei and other senior Nation managers who masterminded my arrest.

After Mr Muite held talks with senior detectives, a charge was hurriedly drafted. It stated that at 9.07pm on February 27, at my office in Parklands, I wrote and circulated an email alleging that NMG CEO, Mr Linus Gitahi, was having an affair with a certain Miss Planet and that I emailed the alleged mail to Mr Gitahi and Nation’s newsdesk from my office. The charge stated that I contravene the Communication Commission of Kenya Act by circulating offensive material in the internet. The detectives claimed they had traced the email had come from my office.

As stated above, I wish not to jeopardise the on-going police investigations. But I can state without fear of contradiction that the charge was tramped up and there is absolutely no truth in the allegations. On the day I’m alleged to have committed the office, I left my office around 4pm after I was called by my wife to inform me that our son was unwell. I asked her to take the first available matatu and I told her I would join them at Gertrude Children’s Hospital in Muthaiga. I immediately took a taxi along Ojijo road in Parklands and I linked up with my wife and son at the hospital. We stayed at the hospital until around 8.30pm and then took a taxi that dropped us at my home in Kasarani. At no time did I go back to office that day. My staff called me at 5pm and told me they had closed the office and were leaving for home. I did not go to the office the next day because, like my son, I was suffering from a bad sour throat. And my son too did not go to school on February 28 because he was going back to hospital for a second injection. I returned to my office on March 1, 2007. I have all the hospital documents and a list of people, including doctors and nurses, whom I met at the hospital. It is, therefore, outrageous for anyone to allege that I was in my office at 9.07pm. No one is ever allowed to work before 8pm in the building and guards ensure the rule is followed to the latter.

After the charge was hurriedly drafted, I was asked to write my statement, which I declined. Before Mr Muite came to CID Headquarters, the detectives had told me they were under firm instructions to keep me in custody for three days up to March 16, 2007. I guess the pressure was coming from Nation managers. However, they agreed to lock me up overnight and present me in court the next day after Mr Muite intervened and told them the charge I was facing was so petty.

At around 7pm, I was moved from CID Headquarters and taken to Kileleshwa police station. However, as I was about to be thrown into the cells, the officers at the desk told me they had been instructed to release me. They told me they had received calls from senior Government officials, but they did not disclose their identities. As I was waiting for my relatives outside the police station to come to pick me up, Mr Muite drove into the station. He was coming to check if I was well. I felt so humbled by Mr Muite’s kind gesture.

The officers told me to report to CID Headquarters the next day at 9am. I obeyed their instructions. After I reported, accompanied by Mr Mue and my friends, the officers who had arrested me told me the Director of Public Prosecution, Mr Keriako Tobiko, had asked for my file and I would not be charged unless he was satisfied they had enough evidence to prosecute me. The officers asked me to go and they said they will contact me if a need arose. Up to now, no one has called me.

The small clique of Nation managers who had masterminded my arrest were furious when they learnt that I did not spend the night in the cell and I was not going to court the next day, March 15, 2007. They had gone home rejoicing that they had fixed me but God worked miracles and the cells door rejected me.

I have decided to go public about my ordeal because of the arrest and the subsequent events that I am going to explain here below.

At 00.50.58 hours on March 17, 2007, I received a text message in my cellphone from telephone number 0722931884 threatening my life. I will report the matter to CID Headquarters later today. This is the second such message I have received since I resigned from Nation. I received the first such message on February 26, 2007, at 09.42.45 hours from telephone number 0728322974. This number has remained switched off since then. I had decided to play down the threat but it’s now evident there is somebody or group of people out there baying for my blood. Following my arrest and the second threatening message, I have opted to go public on the issue.

Sometimes in February (after I had resigned), I received some information that Nation managers implicated in the sex scandals had hired private investigators to trail me and monitor whom I associated with and my activities. Unknown to them, the private investigators they had hired were known to me and I have since then met one of them and held discussions on the task given them by Nation Media Group. But I won’t go into details for various reasons. I also learnt that Mr Odindo visited the library on Nation Centre’s 4th fl on Sunday, March 4, 2007, and collected my photos and those of former CID Director, Mr Joseph Kamau, which he gave to the private investigators. The investigators have a brief to use the photos (because NMG managers thought they did not know me or how I look like) provided by Mr Odindo to track me down and Mr Kamau to see if we normally meet, and if we do, what we normally discuss. This is a strange thing from Nation. Apart from Mr Kamau, I still keep close contact with two other former directors of CID and at least four past police commissioners and a host of serving and former officers. Why pick on Mr Kamau? What is unlawful meeting him or any other person? Nation will never choose my friends and I’ll continue associating with anyone I feel like, Mr Kamau included.

I strongly protest the decision by Nation managers to give my photos to strangers. Kenyans and the world should hold them personally liable in case anything bad happens to me and my family.

According to an article being circulated in the internet by a group calling itself Kitengela 10, Mr Kamau is alleged to be behind the exposure of sex scandals in Nation Centre and that I and a group of other Nation journalists were working with him. Though the intention of the anonymous group is to counter the damaging sex dossier doing rounds all over the world, they sound like goons for hire and they have pieced together a masterpiece on imagination which they have packaged as a counter-attack dossier. For instance, It’s amusing they are alleging I was armed with a gun when I went to tender my resignation letter. I have never owned a gun and I have no intention of owning one. All they wrote is pure crap, apart from the section they say the dossier on the sex scandal is not new, therefore, confirming the existence of such affairs in Nation Centre.

And confidential information I have gathered from friendly NMG managers is that the managers implicated in the sex scandal have been claiming that Mr Kamau has been using the network of the elite detectives he had while he was the director of CID, to gather and compile the dossier on Nation managers implicated in the sleaze. I don’t hold brief for Mr Kamau and I don’t know the accuracy of those allegations. The managers also revealed that alleged NMG sex maniacs were trying to use me as a scapegoat so that they can scare the authors of the damaging letters.

I wish to state categorically that I have never been part of the authors of the sex dossier being circulated on NMG managers. Neither do I know the authors. Just like other Kenyans and other internet readers all over the world, I have also been reading the material being circulated. The scandalous material was being circulated even when I was still working in Nation, and like other employees, I would also photocopy or download the material from the internet and read.

It’s interesting that the NMG managers implicated in the scandal started linking me to the authors of the anonymous letters while I was still in Nation to get an excuse to get rid of me because they wanted to fulfil the wishes of the police commissioner, Maj Gen Mohamed Hussein Ali, who badly wanted me out of Nation because I had refused to down play reporting of crime and security stories. I knew that NMG managers had been silently linking me to the writing of the letters after I had resigned. When I met Mr Gitahi and six other top managers in his office a day before I resigned, they only dwelt on the issue of why I owned a tour company and a vehicle they allege I bought through a public auction from the Kenya Police in 2005. Mr Gitahi and his managers had all the opportunity to demand to know from me if I had participated in authoring the letters during that meeting but they squandered the chance. No one touched the issue. Their focus was the tour company and the alleged vehicle.

I resigned because I believed the managers were using the two issues as a scapegoat while the real issue was that they wanted to arm-twist me to down play incidents of crime in the country to please the police commissioner. The issue is discussed at length in the two letters I sent to Mr Gitahi on February 18, 2007. I still stand by the content of the two letters since they detail the truth and the collusion between a clique of NMG managers and Maj Gen Ali to force me out of my job because I had adamantly refused to bow to the wishes of the police commissioner.

When I was arrested, I told the officers I expected fair investigations from them because the issues they are investigating directly touched on Maj Gen Ali since my woes in Nation emanated from him. Mr Gitahi, Mr Koskei and Mr Wangethi Mwangi, the Group Editorial Director, were only fulfilling the commissioner’s long desired wish to see me out of Nation. I still have copies of letters he had written to NMG managers demanding that they take action against me – not because I had written stories which were not factual. He wanted me out because I had refused to down play the coverage of crime stories so that it can look like his tenure was marked by a drastic decline of crime. But that is not the reality. Instead of being supported, Mr Mwangi started colluding with Maj Gen Ali and Mr Gitahi jumped into a bandwagon he does not understand. Mr Koskei, who has in the past been used by the management to kick out undesired staff, was used in my case to come up with fake investigations that I had bought a vehicle from the police through a public auction. The truth is that the vehicle was bought by my relative, When Nation sells its pick ups and other vehicles, the priority is given to the staff. So, even if I had bought the alleged vehicle from the Kenya Police, what is the crime since the sale was done in public and in a transparent manner. All the sale documents, some signed by a representative of Maj Gen Ali, are available and I presented them to Mr Gitahi in November. But since my fate had already been sealed when Mr Gitahi met Maj Gen Ali a month before he set foot in Nation Centre (read the February 18 letters which are available in the internet for a better understanding), I had to be sacrificed.

Also, am not the only person in Nation who engaged in business. Mr Gitahi himself is a director of Equity Bank and he is a dairy farmer. And so many employees own NGOs or run other businesses.

After failing to seize the opportunity to ask me about the sex letters during the meeting in Mr Gitahi’s office, NMG managers have now found the courage to use the police to raid my private business and to use them to terrorise me. The raid masterminded by NMG managers in my tour company is no different from the police raid on the offices of the Standard Group on March 2, 2006. The irony is that while the raid on the Standard was masterminded by the Government, the raid on my private business was masterminded by the leading media house in East and Central African region, which has been pretending to be the champion of injustices committed on the citizen by the Government and its agents, champion of human rights abuses, champion of press freedom, speech and association and champion of the respect of the rule of law. After the raid on the Standard, NMG relied on me as the Crime Editor to expose those behind the barbaric raid. I did a better job than even the Standard who were the victims. And NMG took pride internationally for a job well done.

At the time, all NMG publications wrote tough editorial condemning the illegal raid on the Standard Group offices. They feared they were next in line and Mr Odindo and Mr Wangethi had badly panicked because they thought they would be arrested for serialising the Anglo Leasing dossier from Mr John Githongo. If Nation condemned the raid on the Standard Group offices, arguing the Government was interfering with private business, why did the media house mastermind the police raid on my business? Why haven’t any of Nation’s publication condemned the raid on my office? Why have NMG leadership been in a state of panic and going to an extent of lobbying other media houses to ignore my story? The same thing happened when top officials of Kenya Union of Journalists last month addressed a press conference over my resignation, the retrenchment of journalists from NMG and the sex scandal rocking the media house. Although all media houses attended the press conference, NMG leadership lobbied other media houses to give the event a black out. Yet Nation has the guts to expose other people involved in cover ups, crimes, malpractices and all sorts of bad things.

Now, NMG has decided to flex its muscles and use the vast resources at its disposal to harass the voiceless and cripple my private business. No matter what they do, even use all the policemen in Kenya , I’ll never go down on their knees if that is what they wish. I refused to go down on their knees when I was working in Nation and I’ll not do so now when I have no obligation against them.

The March 14 raid on my business is a desperate attempt by NMG managers to hit back because I resigned and I refused to play their dirty game and for subsequently exposing the rot inside Nation Centre in the two letters I wrote and made public on February 18, 2007. It was bitter pill for them to chew because NMG leadership has for a long time adopted a hollier-than-thou attitude and they did not believe anyone would one day lift the lid for the world to see the rot inside the media giant. What was contained in my two letters was mild (it was just a fraction of the real filth choking Nation Centre) compared to what the respected John Githongo exposed about the Kibaki regime. If Nation gave Mr Githongo a hero’s treatment (I too believe he is one of Kenya ’s best hero), why are the managers so afraid when the truth is told about the secret goings on inside Nation Centre? For how long will they continue muzzling the truth? One day, somebody will lift the lid and the whole world will get to know the real dark secrets of the media house.

I’m amused that Mr Odindo, an editor I hold with a lot of respect, can agree to be used by his friends in Nation Centre and is now taking the leading role to expose me to danger by giving my photos to strangers. I have respected him for the role he played in my promotions while I was working in Nation and for the many secrets we shared together. I can say without fear of contradiction that Mr Odindo is one of the managers who are most hated by journalists in Nation. But he remained my friend until my last minute in Nation. I still regard him as one of my best friends to this day and I would be the last person to harm him or wish him bad things. Many journalists in Nation viewed me as his mole and I was almost swallowed by many of them when I often defended Mr Odindo during informal gatherings.

But it seems he has decided to throw the respect I have for him out of the window. Even when the fresh letters of the sex scandals (these letters have been flying in and outside the newsroom ever since I joined Nation in 1995 from the university) started circulating in November, last year, I often told my colleagues that whoever was writing the hate mails, they should spare Mr Odindo and the other good managers. Even if I was part of those authoring the letters, as has been claimed by a clique of NMG managers, I would have prevailed upon the authors to spare Mr Odindo and the other good managers.

When I met Mr Odindo in his office before I made a decision to resign, we had a discussion and he kept pleading with me that I should never reveal what we discussed to anyone. He was even so worried when he saw me with a phone and he kept pleading that I switch it off fearing I was recording him. I cleverly refused to switch it off and his fears were not misplaced. Mr Odindo repeatedly told me he would lose his job if I revealed to anyone what we had discussed. I have kept the gentleman's agreement. On the day the referendum results were announced, I met Mr Odindo in his office and he made some shocking revelations to me. Should he continue with his unwarranted provocation, let me assure him that I will spill all the beans at an appropriate time. I’m not blackmailing him, but he knows I keep my word as far as he is concerned.

I appeal to all the friends of the journalism profession to drum some soberness in Nation Media Group leadership. The Group can not be telling all and sundry that it stands for the truth and then turn around and infringe on the rights of former employees like myself in a bid to silence them. The raid on my private business was a barbaric thing I did not expect from a respected media giant like Nation.

I’m not afraid to be taken to court. If that happens, the entire world will for the first time have an opportunity to know some of the dark secrets inside Nation Centre. I promise the small clique of NMG managers that the trial will be one of the messiest court cases ever to be witnessed in the history of this country. Neither am I afraid that somebody will put a bullet through my head. I’ll not be the first or the last person o be killed for standing up for justice and what is right.

The Moi regime was once feared and many innocent people died fighting for change. This did not kill the resolve of others. The fight went on and today Kenyans know how freedom is sweet. Nation Media Group cannot be the one now trying to reverse the gains Kenyans made. Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe is still doing it but this has not killed the resolve of the masses to fight for justice. I’ll never be cowed by any form of repression. With or without Muiruri, the truth will one day come out. Why are NMG managers, just like Maj Gen Ali, so paranoid when the truth is told?

FOR HOW LONG ARE KENYANS GOING TO LIVE IN FEAR? Whoever is out there plotting to put a bullet through my head is welcome to do it now. We all live because of God's will but not at the mercy of any human being.

Nation Sex-Scandal Must Now Be Viewed In New Light

There are those readers who have argued convincingly here that the way in which the alleged Nation sex scandal has been exposed is wrong and unfair to those who stand accused, and especially their immediate families.

However after the recent developments and the arrest and harassment of former nation crime editor Stephen Muiruri, the whole saga must now be viewed in new light. It is now clear that the real issue here is a fight to protect Kenyans from the power and influence of the ruling class who apparently gloat at their breakfast tables every morning as Kenyans religiously read only what they (the rich, powerful and influential ruling class) have authorized for publication and nothing more.

Recently we have for instance exposed in this blog what really happened during a recent hijacking of a Coastbus headed to Mombasa at Emali, and the rape and harassment that followed as told to us by an eyewitness who went through the whole terrifying ordeal. Why did we not read this story in our trusted daily newspapers or see it on TV? Surely the mainstream media has much more resources and expertise to cover such an incident than this small under-staffed blog?

Yet the view taken by most Kenyans on this issue of exposing the truth at all costs is really not new. When Dedan Kimathi and the Mau Mau were fighting the colonial government in the forests, there are those indigenous Kenyans whose view was that these were just dangerous thugs and killers. Some view those who would want to expose the truth, including this blogger in a similar manner, yet the war is the same because the people who came into power after that gallant fight were actually the home guards who aided the colonials in ruthlessly crashing that rebellion. And like the masters of their fathers and grandfathers, today these sons of homeguards are keen on ensuring that only what they authorize for publication is published.

For this reason, this blogger has resolved to ensure that as far as possible, no views and comments by readers in this blog will be deleted, no matter how radical and unpalatable they are. No issue no matter how sensitive will escape publication here. The last thing I want to do is follow the route that our mainstream media has followed into self-censorship.

Why We Were Duped In 2002 And How We Have Already Been Cheated For December 2007

Yesterday evening I desperately tried to stay awake as somebody slowly and in great detail tried to prove to me why at least three of the ODM-Kenya candidates are viable presidential material.

That is why I am in a bad mood this morning. Let me explain.

In recent times, I have been trying very hard to play a careful balancing act (the way boring daily newspapers do it) of treating all the candidates across the political divide equally. The idea is to ensure that all readers leave the piece feeling good that their candidate has been treated fairly.

I am getting a little sick of writing so-called balanced reviews on so-called presidential candidates that make me want to throw up. Some of them are worse killers than the late Simon Matheri because they have not only stolen from the Kenyan people but their economic crimes have caused the deaths of tens of thousands of Kenyans (Matheri's victims did no reach 100).

So today I will tell it as it is.

Time and again this blogger has been accused of being a Raila Odinga stooge, so it is only fair that I start with this gentleman.

Last night I watched with disgust as Raila Odinga who was hosted on the NTV On the spot TV show emphasized that ODM-Kenya unity was still intact. This is a blatant lie. As if the plastic smiles and show of unity was not enough, Raila is still trying hard to tell Kenyans that all is well within ODM. Host Julie Gichuru, who did an excellent job, at one point lost her cool and told the ODM founder that Kenyans were not fooled.

Really, we are not children to keep on being cheated that mum and dad are friends when we heard the pans flying across the kitchen last night and dad raising his voice. We are not children who need to be shown that mum and dad are friends for the good of our psychological upbringing. Please, spare us.

If a presidential candidate can insist on telling us lies now, what will they do when they get to State House? To make matters worse, for the next president of Kenya to be successful they will have to make some very hard choices, will he lie through it all?

This blogger has inside information that a large part of the ODM meeting between the presidential aspirants was spent daring each other to leave the party. But nobody wants to leave, so they reluctantly moved to the next agenda, which centred on how best they can bare with each other until Election Day, which mostly means finding a way to nominate a presidential candidate. Since non of these mostly self-centred, greedy politicians want to leave ODM-Kenya maybe it is time we the people left because I am going to throw up if I see those hypocrites hold hands and give out those plastic smiles, one more time. It is disgusting and abusing the intelligence of Kenyans.

Then there is Kalonzo Musyoka whose supporters have become increasingly intolerant and abusive in this blog. I tend to think that their candidate holds similar views and emotions to theirs and this is the man who wants to be president of Kenya. Here is a man who does not have the courage to vote on certain issues in the parliament and takes to hiding in the toilet (of all places), let alone attending a small demonstration outside the AG's chambers. What is the man so scared of? Do Kenyans want a spinelss president with no courage?

Here is a man who has never done a single self-less thing in his life. He stayed in Kanu when it suited HIM. And quickly left when it suited HIS best interests. Kalonzo's supporters insist that he is clean but court records (not hearsay) prove that as a practicing lawyer, he changed the ownership of a client's piece of land and forced his client to go to court to get their title deed back when they still did not realize that their land had changed hands. That is how honest and selfless the man some Kenyans want to be their president is.

These two are the cleanest candidates on offer. By the way I am not considering minor candidates here. William "YK92" should be in prison if for nothing else then for helping to impoverish Kenyans overnight by massively distributing (while also pocketing) carton-fulls of Kshs 500 notes in 1992. The same for Cyrus "YK92" Jirongo and to a lesser extent Musalia "Goldenberg Finance Minister" Mudavadi. It is laughable that the chief architect of Goldenberg Paul Kamlesh Pattni himself is also standing for president. Kwani what's with this Kenyan presidency? I'll tell you, it is license to get rich quick and avoid facing the law for your past sins.

Then there is the incumbent, Mwai Kibaki. There are those who say that the President has never recovered from his near fatal accident shortly before the 2002 polls. If this is true, then it is very scary because it raises the question; who really rules Kenya? Trust me you don't want to hear the possible answer to that question. But just to give you an idea, because of the power that goes with the office, the people who usually surround the president are greedy, dangerous, tribalistic, murderous animals. If those are the people (opps, animals) who are indeed in power and now seeking another 5 years through getting their figure head back to State House, the only thing I can say is, will the last person leaving Kenya please remember to switch off the lights.

If on the other hand it is truly Kibaki ruling, then my question is simply this? Why does an old man of around 80 years whose health is failing him want to hang on to an office that is going to see unprecedented pressures in the next 5 years? Whose interest is he serving anyway, his own or that of the country?

My fellow countrymen, that is the sad analysis of our so-called presidential candidates for 2007. The people some of us are sacrificing all for and leaving abusive remarks at sites like this one to show our loyalty to. Self-centred politicians who would care less if you or me dropped into the Indian Ocean today. Men whose only vision, the thing that keeps them going, is not a better tomorrow for Kenyans but images of them in that long dark custom-built Mercedes Banz with a long glorious motorcade waving to hungry poverty-stricken increasingly desperate Kenyans.

God help us all.

Raila Odinga Defends Gilbert "Miracle babies" Deya

Watching Raila Odinga on Nation television last night defending Bishop Gilbert Deya was perhaps the biggest blunder the otherwise erstwhile politician has made of late and the Langata MP could have been better off steering away from the issue by simply saying Deya was a friend from his home in Bondo and had nothing to do with the abortive visit by ODM leaders to London.

Odinga was seen and heard before Kenyans saying that Bishop Deya was innocent and there were even no complainants in the child abduction allegations yet the Kenya government is seeking extradition from London so he could face charges here in Nairobi. His wife has already been charged in court over related allegations over what was termed as the miracle baby scandal.

Guilty or not Guilty, Deya is perhaps the most controversial preacher in Kenya's history ever since scores of children were found in his Nairobi home only for them to be traced from different parts of the country where they had been allegedly abducted from. On the other hand, Deya was in London where he claimed he prayed for childless couples to get children. Police say they have a child trafficking case against him.

Raila is aware of all these facts as they were reported in the local newspapers when the scandal broke and one wonders why a man of Raila's stature will defend someone with such a reputation yet he is aspiring to be the president of this country.

One thing is however clear, Deya comes from Raila's home place but what is worth noting is that Deya is a very rich man which makes all the difference and probably answers the question why Raila will involve himself with such a guy.

There was talk that the Deya ministries had provided top of the range luxury cars for the ODM luminaries to travel in while in London and he had also donated an unknown number of cars towards Raila's presidential campaign on the assumption that he was going to be the party's presidential candidate.

This is probably what made the ODM luminaries boycott the bonding meeting other than the obvious but now forgotten fact that quite a number of ODM functionaries are unable to obtain clearance to set foot in London due to their records concerning corruption.

Michuki's Proposed Legislation To Make Gun Possession A Capital Offence

It is no surprise that the government wants to sponsor a bill in parliament to make illegal gun possession a capital offence that will be punishable by the death penalty. It had been earlier indicated that there was a move in the offing to amend legislation on the same.

Speaking after overseeing the destruction of over 8,000 firearms recovered from criminals, the minister of internal security John Michuki added that the penalty will also apply for those dealing in and handling illicit firearms.

With the rate of gun crime in the country, it should not be difficult for parliament to enact the new law as several legislators have also been victims of gun crime including Samburu East's Sammy Leshore who was crippled by a bullet to the spine a couple of years ago and has been confined to a wheel chair ever since.

Enacting the proposed bill will not necessarily reduce gun crime but will definitely up the cost of buying or hiring a firearm from the illegal dealers. I say crime won't go down as the number of idle youths and desperate citizens will not go down by making illegal firearm possession a capital offence.

And again, there are enough desperate guys who have lost hope in life and will always risk carrying and using an illicitly acquired weapon as long as they get an opportunity to rob someone and get away with it.

By the way, violent robbery is a capital offence in this country and that has never stopped the escalation of gun crime, in fact, it's getting more vicious by the day and one wonders whether the most deterrent laws are capable of prompting gangsters to turn over a new leaf.

I keep on saying in this blog and will repeat it again. The approach of arresting crime levels in this country should always be proactive rather than reactive. Sending gangsters to the gallows won't make potential criminals change their future plans, the government should instead try finding out why so many citizens are opting to risk their lives by turning to crime.

I do not intend to be a prophet of doom but the way I see it, the gun crime rate will maybe reduce a little after the new law comes to effect. And that is a very big "Maybe." After about three months or so, it is bound to soar again, maybe even to record levels after those involved in the trade inevitably get 'used to' the new legislation.

There are those who are always looking for ways to fix their enemies, especially politicians. Which better way than to plant guns on their premises and then tip the police? Suspected capital offenders don’t qualify for bond or bail and have their cases heard while they are in custody. Is there a better way of punishing your enemy than setting him up on an illegal firearms charge under the proposed new law?

The proposed bill has its pros and cons just like any other law but this one may prove to be counter productive as the government is failing to tackle the root problem. Perhaps getting Kenyans jobs and stressing on parents to impart moral values and probity to their children could be the first step prior to changing gun laws.

It will be interesting to hear the debates that our selfish legislators will engage in prior to voting for or against the proposed bill. By the way, our members of parliament also have to discuss other ways of how to rip off the treasury as their time is almost up. To them, the latter must be the priority.

Huge Opportunities Online For Kenyans

One of the things that has kept many Kenyan families going in the recent past has been people seeking opportunities outside the country. Kenyans are spread all over the world eking out a living any way they can find. A lot of this cash is then repatriated home to keep many precious families from starving to death.

But it has been increasingly difficult for Kenyans to enter many western countries which offer the most lucrative opportunities in the post 9/11 world where terrorism and the threat of terrorism has moved to center-stage. Immigration laws have also been tightened and sadly today, most Kenyans abroad are illegal immigrants. You really do not have to go far to prove this. In neighboring Tanzania, despite the best efforts of that government to keep Kenyans out, there is a huge population of illegal Kenyan immigrants doing all sorts of jobs and businesses. The risks are high because those who are caught are usually jailed before repatriation.

Now is the time for Kenyans to wake up to the new amazing window of opportunity that is known as the World Wide Web. The Internet offers you an opportunity to "work" in the West without leaving Kenya. In this blog we are lucky to have access to a special report and the expertise of a Kenyan who currently earns a living online. So what you will be reading here is not theory, it is actually being done.

Admittedly earning a living online has its' challenges, but then what in this life does not have challenges? The key to success is knowledge and it gives this blogger great pleasure to have this opportunity of making a difference in Kenya in terms of playing my small part in helping creating employment and in encouraging Kenyans to venture online to take full advantage of the opportunities available. A word of caution is in order. You need to be very careful because there are all sorts of scams going on online and some may not be obvious to the new comer. That is why it is best to move off initially with information that you can trust, which is what I will be endeavoring to supply in this section daily. On my part I will try my best to supply as much of the information as possible for free and even where it will be for sale we will keep the prices low. Always remember that the information, links to relevant paying web sites and so on cost somebody else money to find and will be of great financial benefit for anybody starting out and therefore being charged something reasonable for it is not robbery.

'Most Wanted Criminal' Edward Shimoli Released From Kamiti Prison

Once described as the most wanted criminal in Kenya, Edward Shimoli was released yesterday from Kamiti maximum prison after serving a ten-year sentence.

He is also on record as having escaped three times from custody and captured the headlines when he was taken to court bound in chains while still recovering from a bullet wound in the leg.

He walked to freedom yesterday and says he is now a law abiding citizen who just wants to piece together his life and what he wanted most was to first spend time with his family. Surprisingly he looked quite healthy on his release unlike most other prisoners.

Last week while still in custody, Shimoli was reported in the daily papers saying he feared for his life on being released as some policemen had sworn that they would kill him when he got out. The reason? He is a dangerous man who does not deserve to live in society with other law-abiding citizens. Analysts fear that the real reason is that he may just name the policemen he used to work with in his criminal activities.

Shimoli's story is plausible considering that he was acquitted of several rape and murder charges due to lack of evidence and was doing time for weapons offences and escaping from lawful custody.

He however looked upbeat yesterday but cautious as he demanded that all the journalists who met him outside the gate identify themselves prior to the brief interview he gave. He says he has plenty to talk about and even invited the scribes to visit him at home.

Stephen Muiruri Arrest: No Word Yet As Incident Receives Media Black Out

The arrest of one Stephen Muiruri has sent shock waves right across the Kenyan media fraternity, including bloggers who have been pushing the limits of press freedom in Kenya for months now. All are waiting with baited breath to see what charges will be slapped on Muiruri, that is if he gets charged at all.

Actually the arrest of Muiruri, the immediate former Nation newspapers crime editor could not have happened at a worst time. Through blogs many Kenyans who have been in the dark are just beginning to find out startling facts that have a major impact on our lives but have hardly ever been covered by the media. High on the list is the Nation sex-for-promotions scandal that seems to be opening a can of worms with many other Kenyans coming forward and pointing out specific sexual misbehavior in corporate Kenya. Then there is the huge effort by police to tone down and even stop major crime reports appearing in the media. Interestingly this is precisely what put Muiruri on a collision course with police commissioner Ali as the crime editor insisted on reporting in detail on crimes and succeeded in unearthing several incidences of attempted cover up by the police. The most memorable was in 2005 during the November referendum on a new constitution where a child was killed in Kisumu during riots but police covered up and wanted Kenyans to believe that nothing of the sort had happened. Muiruri brought that story to Kenyans and finally the police were forced to admit the truth. There are many other instances.

To get an idea of just how effective the police instigated media blackout on crime has been, this blogger cited an incident at the Mashada site where somebody reposted a Kumekucha article that highlighted the frequent hijackings of matatus in Nairobi which usually ended up with the rape of the women passengers. These hijackings are hardly ever covered in the media and a Kenyan left a very abusive comment at the site calling this writer a liar and insisting that I must have made up the whole story.

Nasty memories of what has been done by authorities against bloggers in countries like Egypt have come to the fore and analysts are wondering whether Kenya will go in the same direction. In Egypt bloggers have been routinely arrested and jailed for what they have written online.

The ultra sensitive government in that country has simply traced the IP addresses of where the "offensive" posts were being made from and in one instance a group of bloggers were leaving an Internet Cyber Café when a police vehicle pulled up and the police had their "culprits" after some brief consultations. Are we headed in the same direction in Kenya?

One thing is for sure, the ruling class in Kenya made up of people who have mostly made their money from corruption have been very nervous about the developments that have been going on in recent times on the web and especially amongst the Kenyan political blogging community.

Was it a mere coincidence that the only media outlet that reported the former Nation crime editors' arrest was Capital FM? Capital FM is owned by a man called Chris Kirubi who like most wealthy people in Kenya mysterious-don't-ask-any-questions past. The man was a transport manager at the government-owned Kenatco in the 70s when the illegal coffee boom was happening. He was a poor ordinary Kenyan then but emerged from the illegal coffee boom an extremely wealthy man. Rumours abound as to how exactly he achieved this Houdini feat. The most persistent says that he used Kenatco trucks to transport the coffee for smugglers to Mombasa for hefty fees that never reached the coffers of the parastatal. Later Mr Kirubi cleaned up his image and was greatly helped by appointments to boards of large multinational companies who wanted to make use of his powerful contacts within the Kenyatta government.

Mr Kirubi's clean image, especially with would-be international business partners surfing the net and Googling an individual (the practice of typing in a person's name at the Google search engine to see what has been written about them) before cutting a deal has been badly damaged by the Kenyan blogging community and chances are that the man would aid with any clamp down in that direction. As far as this blogger knows, no other media outlet has reported the Muiruri arrest. Is this telling us something?

Stephen Muiruri: What Dark Secrets Of The Police Commissioner Does He Know?

Those who have an inkling on the kind of information that Stephen Muiruri has on the high and mighty may have been secretly happy at his arrest not because they dislike him, but because he could be much safer in police cells than in the streets.

It is said that Muiruri himself usually carried a gun for his own protection and sources within Nation house insist that he was armed on the day that he went to surrender his resignation letter.

In the lengthy resignation letter he circulated via email to his colleagues at the media house, which later leaked and has been widely posted in various Kenyan blogs, it was obvious that he blamed police commissioner Ali for his woes. Hardly surprising because Muiruri is known to be a close friend of former CID director Joseph Kamau who left the police force in a huff after clashing on several occasions with police commissioner Ali.

This writer has never met Muiruri in person but during an email interview with the former Nation crime editor, it became clear that there was some certain highly sensitive information that he had on Police commissioner Ali which he was not prepared to discuss online. He instead suggested a personal meeting to divulge the information. This blogger was still in the process of organizing to travel to Nairobi to meet Muiruri, while accomplishing other urgent chores, when news of his arrest came through. So what exactly does Muiruri have on the most powerful police commissioner in the history of independent Kenya? Could this be the source of his woes.

Read the Muiruri’s letter where he says he fears for his life.

Fake Smiles And The ODM-Kenya Show Of Unity

Yesterday the leading ODM-Kenya presidential candidate’s emerged from a 4 hour closed-door meeting with nothing to show for it.

Even more sickening was their insistence to go ahead with their usual show of solidarity holding hands and smiling for the cameras, only that the smiles this time round looked very fake and plastic and extremely forced. The truth is that tensions are still very high within the ODM high command.

The group released a brief statement to the press saying that they would have another meeting at a future date. Clearly this means that they are yet to agree.

Interestingly some crazy rumors are doing the rounds that at least two ODM presidential candidates who boycotted London had meetings with former President Moi and President Kibaki separately shortly before the decision to boycott London was made. Even more sickening is the rumour that blood oaths have been taken to ensure that the son of Jaramogi does not ascend to the presidency.

While there is no way of proving whether the rumours are true or not, just yet, it is clear that there is panic amongst some certain quarters who greatly fear the likelihood of a Raila presidency. Although this blogger does not support a Raila presidency, I strongly believe that everybody should be given a fair chance, especially Raila who has fought the cause of the common man for many years when many others would not dare lift their heads.

Personally I think Raila’s biggest mistake was joining forces with the rattle snakes (certain presidential candidates within ODM). I think he may have been a wee bit too confident of his ability to tame them

Ways To Make Money Online

Kumekucha's brand new Online Business How-to section:

Every day the lives of people all over the world dramatically changes as they find a way to make money online, even as most of us continue to believe that it is just plain hype and something quite impossible. Or only for a select few experts.

It is really amazing how so many people in the world are still asleep even as a brand new exciting economy rises rapidly on the World Wide Web. And the amazing and really exciting thing about this economy is that for those who can figure it out, it has no limits to the amount of wealth that it can yield for you.

Two Kids Who Found A Way To Make Money Online And Ended Up With Billions Of Dollars

Take the example of Google Inc. that started out as a project for two guys who love mathematics and figured out a way to use their knowledge to solve a problem on the World Wide Web as part of their project in University. Before Moscow born Sergey Brin and American Larry Page came along searches using search engines were mostly a mess. You would have to sift through thousands of results to find what you were looking for. The two created a brand new formula (they call it algorithm in mathematics) that made search engine results much more accurate and hence much easier for anybody to find what they were looking for in seconds. Most of you who end up reading this page will have found it using Sergey Brin and Larry Page's search engine, called Google.

The pair started out giving the search engine service for free and had millions of users before they finally figured out how to make money online from the whole thing. Today the youngsters' company is worth over US$40 billion.

Even Very Small Businesses And Individuals Can Make Lots Of Money Online

But you don't have to grow to the size of Google. There are many people raking in an income of $60,000 comfortably every month while having the time of their lives with no big staff or overheads to worry about. Many of them do it using the most popular make-money-online service and affiliate program. Incidentally it is also belongs to Google and it is called Adsense. Have you seen the tiny advertisements that appear on the side of search engine results that have Ads by Google written somewhere at the top or bottom? Yes those tiny text ads. Adsense has also been extended to sites and anybody who has a site or even a blog (which is so easy to launch) can apply to run Adsense ads on their sites. They work in a simple and ingenious way. On examining your site and accepting your application, Adsense will give you a code that you paste on your site (don't worry it is very easy to do) and from then on, you do not need to do anything more. Your site will automatically carry ads that are relevant to whatever is on your pages. It does not matter where in the world you are. When your visitors see something that they are interested in, they simply click on the ad. Google get paid every time this happens and they give you a share of their earnings. Usually it is just a few cents at a time but it accumulates quickly if you have some decent traffic. Imagine getting 1000 clicks and each one paying out 50 cents daily. That would give you a daily income of $500 and a monthly income of $15,000. Many people all over the world are earning that kind of money and it is not difficult at all, all you have to do is figure out how they do it by doing your own research online. Or you can take a short cut and learn exactly what to do from people who are already doing it and are willing to share out their secrets with you, at a price.

Never Has It Been Easier To Make Money Online

Never has it been easier to make money online because in the example I have just given, you do not even need to sell anything. All you need is a page with Adsense ads and a little traffic and you have started earning money online.

Although the Adsense program is admittedly the most popular online, there are numerous other ways to make money online. All you need to do is ignore the make-a-million-quick scum artists and start off making a few hundreds and then build up from there.

For instance there are programs that pay between $5 and $30 for you to write review and write about certain products and even websites. There are beginners who start off earning about $35 a day doing this kind of writing and about $1,000 monthly. Not a terribly high amount of money but not a bad place to start either, making money online and earning a living on the Web.

Interested in making money online? Get all the details on how you can get started today.

Many people don't know it, but there are plenty of genuine jobs and business opportunities available online. Get details on how you too can make money on the Internet or even earn a living. It does not matter whether you live in the remotest village in Kenya or anywhere else, all you need is a computer connected to the Internet. Breaking News: Former Nation Crime Editor, Stephen Muiruri Arrested

Should We Now Prepare for a Standard-like Raid On Political Blogs Based Within Kenya?

The time has come for Kenyans and especially those who realize how important press freedom is, to stand up and be counted.

Shortly before 1 pm Kenyan time, today, former Nation crime editor Stephen Muiruri was picked up from his office by people who said they were policemen. They searched his office and took away some items with them. It will be interesting to see what the former Nation crime editor will be charged with but there is a very high likelihood that it will have something to do with the publishing of anonymous information about an alleged sex-for-promotion scandal within the Nation media group. If indeed this is going to be the sort of charge preferred against Muiruri, then every Kenyan must be deeply concerned and voice strong objection against the move.

Why?

Because recent positive developments on the web that have given Kenyans real press freedom for the first time and this is something that has really been worrying the powers that be. Through the Internet, Kenyans can now obtain information that the controlled media can never publish. For instance through this blog, many Kenyans have discovered for the first time, the real horror of crime in the country that has been kept well hidden from the public. The most recent example of this is the horrifying rape that took place during the hijacking of a Coastbus at Emali as it headed for Mombasa from Nairobi last Saturday night.

But what must have really scared the people who run things in Kenya is this exposing of sexual misadventures at the work place. Kenyans will remember the incident during the Kanu days when a young woman claimed that the then powerful Minister of State Julius Sunkili had forced her into sex right on the carpeted floor at the offices in the plush office of the president building. She even produced a child called Dennis whom she claimed was sired by the powerful Kanu minister.

The case of the former South African Vice president who admitted having sex with a woman who is HIV positive is even more recent.

You can be sure that these sort of things happen all the time in the offices of those who run things in Kenya. And you can imagine the kind of panic going on there now as web sites and blogs continue to expose things. And that includes this popular blog. This site has recently experienced an upsurge in traffic from strange IP addresses and you can be sure it is some of these powerful people wondering if they have been exposed yet. The truth is that they have reason to fear. I have received many emails in recent times detailing all sorts of sexual scandals in leading respected private companies in the country. It is only a matter of time before we start receiving such information from government offices of the high and mighty.

The arrest of Muiruri could be an ill-advised move to check these developments in press freedom, because the former Nation crime editor has been for a long time linked to the Nation anonymous writers who have exposed an alleged sex-for-promotion scandal that has shocked Kenyans. This is despite Muiruri vehemently denying the any involvement.

But even more worrying is the fact these blogs could prove to be very powerful forces in influencing public opinion and voting during the forthcoming general elections.

I will inform you of the latest on this development as I receive details.

Join me in condemning any attempt to harass or intimidate Stephen Muiruri and any other bloggers writing anything about the country from Kenya. If any of them are guilty of defamation than let those who have been wronged prove that the information is false and sue accordingly for damages (although the defematioon laws in the books are crazy and require offenders to pay sums like 20 million in damages).

ODM On The Verge Of Self-Destruction, Narc-Kenya To Follow Soon

It is now clear that it is either Raila Odinga or Kalonzo Musyoka (depending on where your radical support falls) who will cause the inevitable disintegration of ODM at worse or the emergence of two splinter ODM-Kenya factions.

Initially it was Kalonzo who was accused of creating antagonism in the party by what was termed as 'shifting goal posts all the time' over the procedure of presidential nominations and was attacked by even close friends like Joseph Nyagah, another presidential aspirant in ODM-Kenya, who asked him to leave the party rather than continue with his constant "nagging".

However, that passed fast as the abortive United Kingdom bonding trip for ODM luminaries badly back-fired on Raila's face as almost everybody boycotted the trip and have now isolated Raila whose remaining allies seem to be only the Luo MP's in ODM. Things are so bad that some analysts are now starting to look at an ODM party minus Raila Odinga or two factions with Raila in one and Kalonzo in the other.

And it seems that word within inner Narc-Kenya circles is that the tougher candidate is bound to be Kalonzo who is expected to end up with more tribal chiefs on his side. Could this be the reason why there are whispers that Chairy Ngilu will be Kibaki's running mate this time round and that President Kibaki will opt to stand with the original Narc?

It seems that all of a sudden, the Langata MP can no longer be trusted by his ODM colleagues and word is out that there is an elaborate plot to isolate him completely and force him out of ODM-Kenya or alternatively leave him with an empty shell as all the other tribal chiefs unite under a different brand new umbrella all the time ensuring that his departure causes minimal weakening as the rest of the luminaries stick together to support one candidate, supposedly Kalonzo. Apparently this is exactly what is being put on the table as negotiation continue through emissaries as temperatures are fairly high at the moment.

Majority of ODM leaders are not idiots or politically naïve and are aware that Raila can never beat Kibaki alone and more so due to the issue of ethnicity in politics where Raila is unlikely to garner significant votes from any other community besides his Luo brothers, if he opts to go it alone like he did in 1997. In fact no presidential candidate currently can win the presidency going it alone.

Kalonzo seems the best bet as being a Kamba, he can marshal support from the rest of the communities including Kibaki's Kikuyu's and those from mount Kenya region which has parts in Eastern province which should be Musyoka's stronghold. Musjoka's radical supporters insist that their man is strong enough. This blogger has his doubts and I have nothing personal against the son of Musyoka (which means in Kamba, the one who returns).

My heart goes out to Raila Amollo Odinga who has suffered so much for the sake of this country and who has virtually been a one-man opposition party for so many years. In all fairness he deserves a stab at the presidency much more than any other presidential candidate currently, but alas, the rough and tumble of Kenyan politics, it seems is keen to deny the son of Jaramogi once again.

How Democracy And The Will Of The People Can Thrive In All These Chaos

The truth is that both major political parties in the country are far from being stable and even as they insist on doing the impossible of sticking together in their coalitions until Election Day, it is clear that they are fighting a losing battle.

And maybe the solution is to stop trying so hard to mix oil with water and to let nature take it's course. The most likely scenario is that we will end up with more than twenty presidential candidates with at least 10 strong tribal chiefs which will deny the incumbent the 25 per cent he needs in 5 provinces to be declared winner. The result is that there will be a run off, and the coalitions can then be reinstated then, after the people of Kenya have been given a chance to speak. Incidentally forming coalitions now is another way of denying the voter a voice. Steadmann does not vote, as Raila reminded the press two days ago. And I add, neither do rude abusive comments on the Internet count. So let's see how popular our favorite candidates really are.

It is interesting the way everybody has assumed that Kibaki will easily get the required 25% in enough provinces to be declared winner. This assumption ignores the fact that a president's votes under the current system is strongly influenced by winning MPs countrywide. The last time I checked, there is a serious rebellion within Narc-Kenya pitting current MPs who are mostly very unpopular with the electorate against those who have been doing their groundwork over the last 3 years or so. This has caused the postponement of the polls recently and it is unlikely that those polls will ever be held. So the likely thing that will happen here is that the Narc-Kenya high command will stick with the incumbent MPs and the disgruntled popular candidates on the ground may just opt for another presidential candidate as they defect to other parties (they will have a huge choice this time round as the number of briefcase parties being churned out at the AGs chambers daily is unprecedented in the history of Africa). Even if the Narc-Kenya high command embraces the popular candidates on the ground, the incumbents will defect and they are bound to do exactly the same thing.

That's why I laughed a little too loudly when an amateur analyst told me two days ago that the problems within ODM are much more serious than those within Narc-Kenya as far as the presidential race is concerned.

Barely Weeks After A Similar Incident In A Western Kenya, Mombasa Based Institution Closes Because Of Ghosts That Attack Girls Only

There was drama at a coastal institution yesterday as scores of pupils and students at the Mbaraki Academy were possessed by evil spirits and started behaving in a bizarre manner including talking in a strange language and experiencing seizures which prompted education officials to order temporary closure of the institution.

Apparently, only females were affected by the strange phenomenon that is nothing new in Kenyan schools with a similar case being experienced in western Kenya last week at a primary school.

A few years ago, several schools in Ukambani were temporarily shut following similar 'attacks' from unseen forces but the situation went back to normal after inter denomination prayers were conducted at the institutions which were in Machakos and Kitui districts.

Usually what we are not told is exactly how the female students are usually “harassed” by the evil spirits. I vividly remember a case at the Muvuti Mixed Secondary school near Machakos town where female students said they were being sexually assaulted at night by invisible forces while others claimed they they were being beaten up. Inexplicably, non of the boys in the school said they had noticed any strange happening.

It is believed that evil spirits prefer attacking school going children due to their tender age and innocence which makes them most vulnerable and an ideal target for the dark forces who torment the young souls.

In most cases, teachers are accused of bringing the evil spirits to the learning institutions while in a few instances; it is pupils who get accused of tormenting their colleagues by inviting the dark forces to school, which is a fertile hunting ground for the evil spirits.

The government has never accepted the situation in all incidents of such nature and are quick to call it inexplicable mass hysteria among pupils and never an invasion of evil spirits. This has only
compounded the problem as authorities bury their heads in the sand and refuse to accept the reality of the situation.

Towards the end of president Moi's tenure, a commission was established to investigate the extent of devil worship in the country, and especially in schools, but although the report was completed and handed over to the government, it was never made public, to the chagrin of millions of curious Kenyans who are mystified by the strange occult world and it's apparent rise in Kenya in recent years.

"An Invisible Force Made Love To Me"

I have systems in place to monitor the readership of this blog and I can tell you that I am deeply honoured and humbled by the fact that the folks who read this site daily are generally very well educated Kenyans and much more smarter than I am. You can easily tell from many of the comments left behind.

But sometimes this kind of desirable profile comes with its' problems. For instance, it causes some people to believe that there has to be a scientific explanation to everything in this life.

But then those of us who have experienced life to the full and traveled widely know only too well that this life is full of twists and turns and things that cannot be explained scientifically or by logic.

Remember the Bermuda triangle where ships full of passengers and entire planes disappear into thin air without a trace? At times ships have re-appeared empty without any clues inside as to what would have happened to the occupants. Remember the popular "Stranger than fiction" syndicated worldwide column that appeared for many years in the Standard newspaper?

The list is endless and it is with this in mind that I present you with a problem that is facing quite a number of Kenyan women these days. They really have nobody to share it with and most folks will just laugh them out of the room. But here goes.

There is this close friend of the family, a divorced woman who for many years has had a very strange problem. Some invisible force would come to her at night and make love to her by force. The "thing" would even leave physical evidence sometimes like semen. This used to happen even when she was still married. At one time "the strong demon" (that's what she calls him) flung her husband off their bed with such force that he hit his head against the wall and remained on the floor dazed during the entire time that the rape went on.

No, my friend has no history of being in a mental institution.

And there is more. She once admitted sheepishly to my wife that a spirit is much better at making love than a human and she kind of enjoyed it sometimes, which made her feel even more guilty and caused such emotional upheaval in her that on several occasions, she seriously considered committing suicide and leaving behind her two lovely children.

The good news is that she found a solution and these days the "thing" has disappeared. I will only share what she did to find a solution in the comments section here and only if I can get at least two readers of this blog who know persons who have gone through the ordeal—even if it is themselves. What I have to say can only be useful to such people looking for a solution I have no intention of giving these details to other scientific types who have no use for it and will only laugh and ridicule this site.

This problem is not limited to men. Once when I was in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania a friend of ours (a man) had a sudden searing unbearable pain from his backside one night. He felt an invisible force penetrating him from behind, the way homosexuals do it. Later we were told that the house where he lived was built with funds obtained from the "spirit world" and that certain human sacrifices were made. What all this meant is that the house "ilukua na wenyewe," (had its' owners) as the Tanzanians put it in such eloquent Kiswahili.

P.S. Incidentally a woman in the United States suffered a similar ordeal and her story was made into a major Hollywood movie in the 80s—I forget the title of the movie, but it was a box office success.
