Blog Links Nation Media Group Sex Scandal To 2007 General Elections
There are always two sides to every story and it is the intention of this blogger to take every opportunity to table both sides of any story published here.
One story that has been doing the rounds amongst Kenyans all over the world is that of the alleged Nation media group sex scandal involving senior editors at the newspaper. Now a brand new blog has linked the expose of the scandal to the forthcoming general elections and "some people within the company" who want to settle scores. In fact the blog has even gone further and named some of the Nation anonymous bloggers whose "venom" has entertained and shocked worldwide in the saga that many Kenyans have repeatedly said is better than any soap opera or episode of 24 or Prison Break, two very popular suspense-filled-edge-of-the-seat-dramas.
The blog, signed off by a group calling itself the Kitengela 10 (Kitengela is famous for discreet meatesting orgies. Was this an idea that came out of a nyama choma brainstorming session called to come up with a strategy to fighting back?) claims that the whole idea of the sex-scandal emails and postings on the web is to bring down the Nation newspapers and to tame it's power and authority in the forthcoming general elections.
The blog names the main people behind it as crime reporter Stephen Muiruri who was pressurized into resigning for what the bloggers now reveal was not only conflict of interest, but blackmailing government officers and abusing company resources as well. No further details are given. Others named are Nation employees still working in the News room, Patrick Nzioka and Mike Mwaniki whom it is said give occasional help as well as a Joseph Ngure Karanaja who was recently retrenched.
The blog goes on to name the main mastermind of the whole Internet expose as former head of CID Joseph Kamau whom it is claimed has a personal grudge against the Nation. However the Kitengela 10 add that he is also working on behalf of certain politicians, among them Jimmy Wanjigi and Alfie Gitonga, both of whom were involved in the Anglo Leasing mega-scum.
But the bombshell is the claim that on the day former crime reporter Stephen Muiruri went to Nation House to tender his resignation; he was carrying a loaded gun. It is not clear what relevance this has although it is an extremely juicy bit of information. To be fair, Muiruri's style of investigative journalism put his life at great risk and it may not be surprising that he obtained a license to carry around firearms to protect himself.
One thing is very clear and that is the fact that the writer's of this new blog are definitely close to the senior editors at the center of the alleged sex scandal. This hardly qualifies them to be neutral in this unfolding saga.
There are a number of interesting things that I would like to point out about this new blog.
Firstly it is unlikely to attract the sort of interest and attention that the other blog detailing the sexual escapades at the media house has. The reason has nothing to do with the writers or writing style but human nature. Even more interesting is the fact that the blog points out that the allegations are not new and had in fact been published in the gutter press earlier. Does this mean that the bloggers are admitting that the so-called dossier is mostly true?
Even more instructive is the fact that the main post at the new blog concentrates on dispelling specifics in the sex scandal revelations but at no point is it said that all the allegations are false. The clear implication here is that the claims are generally true. One trusted source within the giant media house told this blogger, "the dossier is over 90 percent TRUE."
Still the allegations that the whole thing is a politically motivated mudslinging campaign against the Nation must be considered and investigated, which I am doing and will publish the findings here.
One thing though, has been disturbing this blogger. Wangethi Mwangi has had past cases of sexual harassment brought against him and was therefore what the Americans would call a sitting duck for any would-be attacks from politicians. But one Joseph Odindo is different kettle of fish. This man has been a major influence behind John Githongo and there are those who believe (including this blogger) that he is the main inspiration that Githongo drew on in his decision to go against his father's close friends and do what few other Kenyans have had "the balls" to do. And that is to take on the entire corrupt establishment virtually single-handedly. That says a lot about the character of this man.
Odindo is known to be a very demanding editor but also has immense people-skills (unlike Wangethi) that have seen him remain popular for years. So what happened this time? Could the allegations against him be true?
The burden of proof rests on the anonymous bloggers who must now quickly move to table the evidence that they have long promised.
As many comments have revealed here, what is said to have happened at the Nation is common in corporate circles in Kenya and especially in Nairobi. However the high esteem in which many Kenyans have held the Nation for a long time is the reason why the allegations have been so shocking and disturbing to many.
I was not able to immediately access the so-called Kitengela 10 blog site, so I have reproduced their post below. I will supply the link here later;
The Kitengela Ten: The Truth Behind the so-called Sex Scandal at Nation
March 6th, 2007
The Kitengela Ten
We come to you, the Kilengela Ten, to capture the spirit of freedom of some of the freedom fighters of our times. Press freedom is under attack in Kenya.
This is by way of the most malicious, fictitious, and hateful letter writing that has targeted the Nation Media Group, especially its group editorial director Mr Wangethi Mwangi, and Group Managing Editor Mr Joseph Odindo.
The campaign has since widened to include many other people at Nation Centre including editors like daily Nation’s Bernard Nderitu, Sunday Nation’s Mutuma Mathiu, and senior editor Eric Obino. Some of the women editors are like Lucy Oriango, who we understand is in charge of magazines, Saturday magazine editor Rhoda Orengo, but most particularly Buzz editor Adhyambo Odera, who has attracted the most vitriol, and has been portrayed as the woman who has opened her legs to all men, and got all editors’ zips flying with her big wiggling buttocks.
As if that was not all, the new CEO Mr Linus Gitah has also been dragged in, accused to have wrecked other people’s and his own home by cheating. And that he is a homosexual, who has been abandoned by his wife. Other people have also been dragged in. Marketing Director has been accused of being the Bull of Nation, as has Finance Director Denis Aluanga, Human Resources director Helen Mbugua. Nearly everyone.
We hold no brief to defend the private behaviours of these men and women. But since NMG is a publicly listed company, and it has played a critical role in Kenya’s democracy, we feel duty bound to defend its public actions and behaviour as an institution, and that of its editors. If Nation, particularly its editors, are discredited, they will not suffer alone. Contrary to what their attackers say, some of them might be able to make up with their wives and husbands and get on with their lives, but the paper will not — and Kenya will be the worse for it.
Another reason is that we have watched with bemused annoyance this campaign of hate and mudslinging for nearly a month now, and been extremely frustrated that these prominent men and women and the company they work for have remained aloof and not issued a response. Perhaps the owners of the company don’t support their editors and managers, in part because they are not Kenyans and don’t live here and therefore don’t feel the pinch.
But we readers and freedom loving Kenyans have done our research and have decided to fight back. We know something about how evil works; it thrives because good men and woman sit back and do nothing.
First, this campaign of hate aimed mainly at the Nation’s leadership, especially its two top editors, has nothing to do with the recent restructuring in which 12 journalists were among over 30 people laid off under, we understand, the orders of Linus who wanted to make Nation a tighter and more efficient ship.
This campaign is about politics, especially the 2007 elections, and according to what our sources inside Nation tell us, some people inside the company who want to settle scores.
There have been some people who have seen a tribal campaign here. No, we don’t think there is tribalism here. It is power.
If one looks again at the list of the people who have been the victims of Jackomafia and the rest, and whose resignation or dismissal Jackomafia is demanding, the effect is that the Nation editorial operation will be seriously undermined. They have picked on the people who are instrumental to the company’s editorial success and sought to discredit and force them out.
But editors like Rhoda or Adyambo are not involved in political sections, and Lucy Oriang only writes one column a week. Why have they been brought in? They have been dragged into the mud for two reasons: One, the people behind the campaign are simple-minded folk who believe that women cannot succeed without sleeping with some man in a company. Secondly, they have also linked up with competitors who see an opportunity to bring these editors (magazines have become an important point of circulation, we are told). But for now, these shall remain unnamed.
This campaign by the tribalists and haters of a free Kenya and strong media, will continue. You have not seen anything yet. Wait until the Alfred Mutuas of this world also get on the bandwagon. But if Nation will not fight back, like it seems to have chosen to do, some of us ordinary Kenyans, will.
POLITICAL AGENDA FictionFirst, the hate letters have claimed that they represent the views of the journalists at Nation.
FactWe have information that the letter writers are no more then six people inside the Nation, and their accomplices outside. There was Crime reporter Steven Muiruri, who, we understand, resigned when he was about to be dismissed for conflict of interest, blackmailing government officers and abusing company resources; Joseph ngure Karanja who was retrench and the occasiobnal help of Patrick Nzioka and Mike mwaniki who are still in the newsroom.
Outside, they are being managed by the former head of CID Joseph Kamau, who lost his job because for habouring the Atur brothers. He has a personal grudge against Nation, which he blames for his downfall, but he is also acting on behalf of a group of politicians in the government with axes to grind with the media group. Among these are Jimmy Wanjigi and Alfie Gitonga, both of whom were involved in the Anglo Leasing transactions.
On the day Muiruri (who by the way is known to have been armed) submitted his resignation, he is known to have gone to the office with a loaded gun. He later had a tearful meeting with Mr Kamau at the Irish Pub at Anniversary Towers after which the disgraced policeman dropped him home.
The Kenya Union of Journalists chairman Eric Orina and his rival Ezekiel Mutua have been co-opted in the campaign, mostly by Kimani. In fact Orina and Gaitho played an important role in disseminating the first email attack.
We have revealed the names, now it is up to NMG management to take action or investigate these claims. More evidence of their dark conspiracies will soon come to the fore.
The Anglo-Leasing scandalThe stories about Wangethi and Odindo are not new. We first read a version of them in the gutter press three years ago, and they have popped up from time to time. But they have never been as wild as this. So why are they being dredged up this time?
The reason is that the first time they appeared, the Nation’s reporting seemed to be against Moi, and those who are mudslinging the paper and their political masters were happy with it.
We have said some of the Jackomafia stuff is not new. It keeps going back to the beginning of the Anglo Leasing scandals just over two years ago. It cannot be mere coincidence, as Muiruri himself reveals in his diatribes, that these two guys — Wangethi and Odindo – now dubbed sex maniacs and bribe-takers, are the ones who traveled to London to meet former anti-corruption czar John Githongo at the end of 2005.
The trip, we all now know, resulted in the definitive exposes of the Anglo Leasing affair, and the famous Kiraitu Murungi and David Mwiraria tapes in which they were pressuring Githongo to lay off the Anglo Leasing investigations.
The emails and stories in the gutter press about Wangethi and Odindo, both known to be among the Githongo’s circle of close friends, increased.
Referedum and death threatsThe Kitengela Ten have also discovered some very disturbing news. Over the last three years, Wangethi, Odindo, Mutuma and other Nation editors have been receiving blackmail and death threats. The year 2005 and 2006, we have established, were particularly bad. However, the threats also started to be made against Lucy Oriang and, we gather, Gitau Warigi.
Both the Orange and Banana sides during the 2005 Referendum accused Nation of bias. Both camps at one point banned Nation reporters from their rallies, and nearly lynched its journalists.
The accusation by the hardliners in government, and the Banana side, was (and continues to be) that Wangethi, as a Kikuyu, had been a “traitor” by not championing the government’s political interest. The Orange campaign on the other hand, labeled him a Kikuyu tribalist who was defending the government.
The reverse accusations happened for Odindo. He was accused by the Orange campaign, particularly the elements from Nyanza, of being a traitor for not supporting them, a “stooge of the Kikuyu”. The tough guys from Central Kenya in the Banana campaign, said Odindo was a “Kikuyu hater,” an ODM agent. We have been told of emails that circulated making the ridiculous claim that Kiboro and Wangethi were beholden to Odindo and therefore they couldn’t stop his pro-ODM bias!
The Adhyambo Odera factorThe Kitengela Ten have yet to find evidence that either Wangethi or Odindo had an affair with this woman with the famous buttocks. Knowledgeable sources say Wangethi hasn’t been to Malindi, where he is alleged to have shacked up with Adhyambo, for over 10 years. Interestingly, Jackomafia who said he would produce the hotel receipts and videos didn’t, as he has failed to produce the incriminating photos of Helen Mbugua and KBC boss David Waweru (or are you still working on your computer-generated images?).
The one thing we can’t explain, however, is that while Adhyambo is Buzz editor, a position she allegedly got after laying Wangethi and Odindo, she has been complaining to anyone who cares to hear, that her salary is much lower than that of many reporters! How is it possible that Wangethi and Odindo could make Adhyambo editor after laying her, and then not give her the salary to go with the job?
Why Linus Gitahi? For simply taking the challenge of leading a politically sensitive company like the Nation, Gitahi has been branded gay and a home-breaker. There is something peculiar among us Kenyans; if you are from a rich or prestigious family, went to an international school, you reach 30 when you are unmarried and have no children, and you don’t defer to the “elders”, you will be called gay or lesbian.
Githongo has endured this, from when he started making noise against corruption in government, and it got nastier after he left. Not surprisingly, Gitahi is being called bi-sexual, because the Kamaus and Muiruris had to somehow explain how come he has a wife and children and has risen fast on the corporate ladder.
When it emerged that Gitahi was to replace Kiboro, our allies tell us that very many people in touch with him. People close to State House, but not State House itself, contacted him. Muriruri has said Police chief Brig. Gen. Ali also rang and, it seems, met him.
Apparently it was at that meeting that Ali told Gitahi that Nation had been very hard on him, and Muiruri who did most of the stories was in the pay of his enemies. Now Muiruri says in his very long post-resignation fighting letter, that Gitahi met Ali and commended the shifty and semi-literate crime editor for a job well done.
Word is that Gitahi took the view that if Ali was complaining about Muiruri, then the young man was doing something wrong. In his anger, Muiruri nows claims that Gitahi was compromised on the very first meeting with Ali! Hasn’t stated in his own letter that Gitahi sent him an sms defending his work (obviously, being only a few days old in the company not knowing the devil he was dealing with).
Part of Gitahi’s problem arises from the fact that because he is from Central province, Nyeri to be precise, it was expected that he would be sympathetic to the government. But because Gitahi also has many friends from western Kenya and Nyanza, among them Mumias CEO Evans Kidero, the expectation was that he would be less hostile to the opposition than Kiboro.
The anger against him seems to derive from the fact that he didn’t protect people like Muiruri, one of the propagandists for the Anglo Leasing mafia, who specialize in planting in the Nation’s pages fictitious stories about Ringera’s war on corruption. So where has that war now reached, Muiruri?
As we said, evil triumphs where good men do nothing. We the Kitengera Ten will continue to update you on the machinations of the enemies of press freedom who have found common cause with Janus-faced journalists at Nation Centre.

ODM Presidential Aspirants Avoid Raila Press Conference
Yesterday virtually all the ODM bigwigs failed to show up for an ODM-Kenya press conference called by Raila Odinga at Serena Hotel, where they were all supposed to have cleared the air over the London fiasco. A visibly shaken Raila downplayed the development as a worried-looking Prof Anyang Nyon'go (who was one of the few senior officials present) looked on.
Increasingly evidence is emerging to support the information leaked to this blogger earlier and published here that Raila had already been agreed on as the party flag bearer by all except Kalonzo Musyoka. It seems that last Thursday, some crafty person took advantage of the fact that Raila was not in the country and did some major mischief that has seen most of the senior party officials gang up against Raila. Some of the presidential candidates that are staying away are probably neutral but are distancing themselves from the "fracas" until the dust settles.
Interestingly, at the time that the press conference was on, Kalonzo Musyoka was addressing a meeting in Eastleigh in Nairobi. Apart from Somalia refugees, the area, as well as neighboring Mathare has a very high population of Kambas, many of them hailing from Kitui and Kalonzo's Mwingi home district.
If it is indeed true that what has happened is a coup against Raila, then it will be interesting to see how many presidential aspirants end up standing to be counted on Kalonzo's side. As I said yesterday what we have here are coups similar to the ones we used to see within the Politburo and Kremlin at the height of Russian communism. The golden rule about these kind of coups is that you never show your preference until the victor clearly emerges. The other thing about these coups is that it is virtually impossible to trace their origins and main mastermind. However the name of one Daniel Aap Moi keeps on coming up in the whispers I am hearing going on around ODM-Kenya.

Stanley "Mr Moneybags" Livondo: Is He The 'Jirongo' Of 2007?
History seems to be repeating itself this time only that the players are now different, the man fighting for political survival is president Kibaki and the youthful hatchet man bestowed with the task of popularizing him is non other than the mysterious Stanley Livondo now christened Mr Money bags by the press.
Calling himself a Narc-Kenya activist, Livondo burst into the limelight about a month ago when he stormed a funeral in Ikolomani in western province in a helicopter and on landing started dishing out cash with impunity. As if that was not enough, when he took to the air to leave, he poured more cash from his chopper as mourners scrambled for it and forgot about the funeral and the nice speech by their MP Bonny Kalwale
Like Jirongo, Livondo was previously unknown and very little can be said about his background and how he came across the millions of shillings that he sees wise to rain on the poor people of Ikolomani where he also has ambitions of becoming the area MP and dethroning Dr Bonny Khalwale.
Another similarity Livondo has with Jirongo apart from both of them being Luhyias, is that they are relatively 'young' and live flambouyant and philandering lifestyles brought about by quickly acquired wealth that was hardly anticipated.
By the end of 2002, Jirongo is reputed to have had three wives and before the end of March this year, Livondo is facing a suite from a young pretty lady called Ann Waithera who claims Livondo has ditched her after getting her pregnant and now wants the courts to compel Mr Money bags to take care of child support.
She says she'd ready for a DNA test after she gives birth to prove that the activist is the father of the child. Her lawyer Daniel Maanzo (yep that\s the ODM-Kenya de-jure chairman) has moved to court for child support but many see a political hand in the all saga considering Maanzo is allied to Kalonzo Musyoka and ODM while Livondo interests are with Narc-Kenya.
What Kenyans are puzzled about is who is this guy who has come from oblivion to dish out money in a way that makes Bill Gates look like a miser yet he has no history of where it has come from and how he has made his money. Chances are that this money being dished out does not belong to him and he is simply a conduit for somebody. Could it be the ruling elite?
This brings us to the million-dollar question. Who is funding the Narc-Kenya campaign and where is the money that Mr Moneybags is raining down from choppers, coming from? Is it from Goldenberg cash, Anglo Leasing cash or is it drug money? Or could it be a fraction of the billions stacked away in foreign accounts during the Moi days which Justice Minister Martha Karua has claimed the government has been unable to receive enough assistance from Western powers to freeze? These are questions Kenyans must ask and find answers to and this blogger will always investigate to get the answers. And I will publish the gory details no matter how unpalatable they may be.

Narc-Kenya Woes: Battle Rages Between The Old Guards And The Young Turks
On one side is the powerful clique of old guards led by ministers John Michuki and Njenga Karume along with kitchen cabinet members Nathaniel Kang'ethe, Joe Wanjui, Peter Gachago, Matere Keriri and Eddy Njoroge who do not wish for party polls to be held soon in fear of splitting the party.
Then there is the dynamic group of young ambitious and intelligent people who want the polls to go ahead soonest possible so that the party can move on and strengthen itself ahead of the general elections. These are Ministers Mukhisa Kituyi, Martha Karua, Njeru Ndwiga and assistant minister Danson Mungatana and of course the comical Kalembe Ndile.
The old guards who think like Kibaki do not want elections now and could be happier if party polls are never held at all as they are bound to create an inevitable split among its ranks. This group is responsible for the constant postponement of the elections that can only be termed as postponing a problem and not solving it.
Power jostling is already rife in the party as the young turks are impatient and can't wait to assume major positions in the party which president Kibaki is expected to use as his vehicle to state house in the forthcoming general elections.
The youthful politicians are also trying to convince the president that since the majority of voters are the youth, key positions should be taken over by the young turks as this will ensure the party victory.
This is good logic as Kibaki's government became unpopular with majority of Kenyans when the president appointed old senile men to key positions in his government, something that went down badly with the youth and could cost him his re-election later this year.
However, the old guards who are more influential as compared to their youthful counterparts are bound to carry the day and that is more the reason why Kibaki's government has always been considered elitist and favoring the rich man as its epitomized by the so called Muthaiga group which seems to be holding the president hostage.
The writing is on the wall now. If the president chooses to ignore the young turks and goes along with his elderly, selfish and arrogant advisers, he is bound to experience a worse humiliation than that of the referendum.

Camera Phone Photos Of Mid-Day Car Sex Sells Out Citizen Weekly In Mombasa
There was drama in Mombasa recently as a wife of a senior employee of the Kenya Ports Authority was found having sex with a company driver at mid-day inside a Nissan X-Trail, sports utility vehicle. Slum residents decided to 'purnish' them by frog matching them naked prior to the police intervening and taking control of the situation. Somebody with a camera phone captured the juicy scenes.
A weekly newspaper, the Citizen, capitalized on the drama and have published the photographs of the naked philanderers being frog matched in the front page of their current issue which was a sell out in Mombasa by mid day yesterday, the issue had arrived a few hours earlier. The photos show the love birds stark naked and in the middle of an angry mob.
Whoever took the photographs must have approached the Daily newspapers first but the photos were probably "too hot" for them and that is how they ended up at the Weekly Citizen.
The Kenya Ports Authority is known for numerous sex scandals involving senior personnel and right down to messengers but this one was unique in nature as it involved a senior officer's wife with a company driver. The photographs in the Citizen clearly show the faces of the "culprits" and the newspaper even names the woman and her KPA-based husband.
KPA is among the best paying parastatals in the country (not to mention the huge amounts of corruption money floating around the Mombasa port) and its' employees are known for philandering. In fact they are notoriously popular in clubs and whore-houses in Mombasa as they are reputed to have plenty of money and usually spend freely. The HIV/AIDS rate in the company is also said to be frightening with most workers seeking medical attention outside whenever they fall sick so as to avoid the company medical facility in fear of being tested for Aids without their knowledge.

Chilling Eyewitness Account Of Coast Bus Hijacking
I managed to track down an eyewitness of the ill-fated Coast Bus Hijacking that happened last weekend (Saturday night) and yesterday I sat horrified and sickened as he described in great detail his ordeal of pure horrendous terror in the hands of armed thugs, together with other passengers somewhere in the bush near Emali.
Let me say that some Kenyans live in ignorant bliss and seem to get very upset when served with the often unpalatable truth. One reader of the popular Mashada site got very upset reading my article on this issue which had been re-posted there by somebody. Especially when I revealed that Matatus in Nairobi are hijacked all the time and women passengers raped, sometimes in full view of the other passengers. This reader was sure that I had made up the whole thing and did not mince his words. He asked me to produce evidence, calling me a liar. He just could not believe that such a serious thing would go unreported or half-reported in the mainstream media. Well, sir, if you are still out there reading this, here is a perfect example of something that was half-reported with all the gory details being carefully left out.
It is instructive that the Coast Bus headed for Mombasa from Nairobi, passed several police checks and on some of them thorough inspection for weapons was carried out. Our eyewitness believes that the weapons used in the incident were not on the bus until somewhere in Makutano (junction of Machakos Road and the main Nairobi Mombasa highway—where the sixth hijacker boarded the bus carrying a bulky bag.) Interestingly after this point, the bus passed only one additional roadblock and then there were no more until the time the thugs took control of the bus at Emali. This clearly illustrates the fact that the gangsters had done their homework well. Even more interesting is the fact that one of them was seen by several passengers with a two-way radio similar to the ones the police use and was discreetly seen using it. Was he listening in on police communication? Admittedly two way radios are common these days and anybody can acquire one, if they go through the proper licensing procedures. However in view of what happened that night, this is bound to raise lots of suspicion.
"I sat next to one of the hijackers," our eyewitness picks up the tale, "and he kept in fiddling with his mobile phone sending and receiving messages. He finally spoke to somebody on the phone, most probably the person he had been sending and receiving messages from, shortly before the gang took control of the bus. They spoke in Kikamba so I could not understand what they were saying."
"At Emali, I suddenly heard two loud gun shots and on looking up I realized that a man right at the front whom I had earlier noticed being very friendly to the policemen who boarded the bus to carry out searches at the road blocks, had shot dead the driver of the bus. The thug had even earlier conversed in Kalenjin to one of the policemen."
Passengers were then told to lie down on the floor of the bus and anybody who would show as much as their head would get shot immediately. The bus was then diverted and driven into the bushes for about 10 kilometres. Emali is before Kibwezi and Mtito Andei on the way to Mombasa from Nairobi.
Passengers were then ordered to surrender their mobile phones and cash.
Our eyewitness says: "I was still on the floor when I heard a commotion with one of the thugs saying that a passenger had attempted to conceal their mobile phone. Again two shots rang out and I feared the worst. Later we discovered that miraculously both bullets had only grazed the top of his head and the man survived the ordeal." The would be victim may have been helped by the fact that the place was pitch dark and the only source of light were the powerful flash lights used by the thugs.
After the loot had been gathered, the entire luggage was taken down from the bus and the contents carefully inspected, anything of value was taken. At the end of the ordeal there was a confusion of all the personal effects from the various bags mixed together in one huge pile on the ground outside the bus.
The thugs then started literally stripping the women passengers naked and carefully inspecting their private parts with the powerful flash lights they were carrying. Our eyewitness says he thought he saw one of the thugs actually try to smell one of the women's private parts. A few women were dismissed as being "sick and infected". The women selected for rape were about four in number and the six thugs then raped them in turns using condoms. Which clearly illustrates that they had come prepared, knowing exactly what they were going to do after they had robbed the passengers. This happened in the open field area where the bus had been stopped.
The women had earlier pleaded with the thugs not to carry out the rape but to no avail. Our eyewitness says that their desperate pleadings and begging still occasionally rings in his ears.
"Those guys can't have been human. All elements of being human had departed from them," the eyewitness quipped to this writer.
The whole ordeal lasted about 3 hours.
What is frightening is that the arithmetic of the whole crime doesn't make any sense. Assuming that the bus was carrying about 70 passengers each carrying an average of Kshs 2,000 and a mobile phone (which would be sold at about 2,000 being so "hot") that would have yielded a total of Kshs 280,000. Assume that there was an extraordinarily high amount of cash on the bus and even double that figure and you would still get Kshs 560,000. Divide that by six and you get a paltry 93,333 for each gang member and that does not even take into account the costs of the operations and the fact that others who assisted would have had to be paid. Hardly the sort of money worth carrying out such a violent capital offence crime for. And that is the really scary thing about escalating crime in Kenya.
It seems that the view of the police is that this kind of information should be kept from the public at all costs to avoid widespread panic. Is this really the fair? Are we not endangering people's lives more when they do not have information on what is really going on in Kenya so that they can assess the risks for themselves and take necessary precautions? For instance companies would opt to send male employees on bus trips out of town, rather than female ones. But with the kind of ignorance prevailing currently where some Kenyans believe that I make up some of the information on this site, then this would be impossible. Incidentally the incident I have just described at Emali is too sickening even for somebody to imagine and create.
Our eyewitness was still in shock as he narrated the whole horrible tale to me, even despite the fact that it was slightly over a week since the incident happened. He however told this writer that he is a born-again Christian and God protected him and sustained him through it all and he is grateful to be unharmed and alive.

ODM-Kenya And Narc-Kenya Need To Take Lessons From Old Russia
Kenyan politicians are amongst the wealthiest in the world and wealth sometimes goes to the head, blinds and causes people to want to do the impossible.
Coalitions are usually formed after elections but in Kenya the political class is attempting the impossible. And that is to keep dozens of "bulls" in the same coalition pens for months on end and hope that they will not want to gore each other apart. That is what ODM-Kenya and Narc-Kenya are all about.
The recent incident in ODM-Kenya, which has left more questions than answers, is a case in point. The whole thing looks very much like one of those internal coups that used to frequently happen within the Communist party's powerful Politburo, as it was called then. This coups would end with the disappearance of a politician or two, sometimes the head of State himself as was the case with Comrade Krushnev in the sixties whose undoing was that he got too friendly with the Americans.
Raila was away in the United States, and so somebody got up to some mischief, very similar to what the folks in the politburo used to get up to in their quest for power. The consequences are that even if the party remains together, things will never be the same again.
This whole madness started with the formation of Narc-Kenya, which was executed by President Kibaki's handlers when it became clear that the president was without a political party. They failed to consider one important detail. That is, how to resolve the always thorny issue of party nominations when you try and put all leading politicians in a region under one umbrella. ODM-Kenya will still have to face this same issue after they deal with their current presidential candidate crisis. I believe it will be so chaotic that it will make the current crisis look like a picnic that happened at Uhuru park.
The writing is now very clearly on the wall. Political parties in Kenya do not have the resources to carry out proper primaries at the constituency level. So they are forced to carry out selections rather than elections, which somehow works out with minimal competition and when each party is operating independently at the grassroots level. But coalitions inevitably lead to nothing but chaos.
Predictably what we can expect from both ODM-Kenya and Narc-Kenya is for the two parties to self-destruct sooner or later. But before that happens attempts at internal coups should keep things interesting.
Just study what used to happen in the communist party in the former Soviet Union and you will understand very clearly where Kenyan politics is at the moment and where ODM-Kenya and Narc-Kenya are both headed.

Raila Odinga Under Siege?
According to insiders, Raila planned the whole tour without briefing his colleagues on the itinerary and even went ahead to solicit funds for the trips sponsorship from characters in London with dubious reputations like Bishop Gilbert Deya of the miracle babies scandal.
The bishop is wanted in Kenya to face child trafficking charges and both Kenya and the UK government are holding talks on how to bring back the semi literate clergyman to face the charges.
However, Bishop Deya is also known to be a close friend to another ODM presidential aspirant Kalonzo Musyoka who skipped the trip along with other leaders, poor Raila was in London with only MPs Anyang' Nyong'o, Joseph Nyagah and Omingo Magara.
The truth is that all ODM leaders have known about the London trip for months and they were also familiar with the identity of the organizers. Why suddenly leak out names of the organizers to the press and start pretending to be holier than thou at the eleventh hour? The answer is simple. That is exactly how politics is played when the competition is from within.
It is an open secret that Raila already believes that he is the ODM presidential candidate and nobody can stop him including Musyoka who is his main rival for the presidential nominations in the movement.
What Kalonzo supporters believe is that Raila is blind to the fact that apart from his Luo tribesmen, they is practically no other tribe that can vote for him in Kenya's ethnically-based politics hence making it almost impossible for him to be president.
Raila supporters say that this is nonsense and that Kenya has changed.
Still Kalonzo supporters are adamant that their man has much better chances than Odinga though the former does not have the finances and resources to win the presidency on his own and he badly needs the ODM-Kenya vehicle for his ride to state house.
Not only was the big London bash poorly attended but what Raila may not have considered is that a couple of his cronies in ODM can't get visa's to that country because of corruption allegations against them. Folks like William Ruto and Moses Mudavadi. Mutula Kilonzo is also a man Whitehall does not like. This appears to have been the perfect trigger to use to cause trouble, which is exactly what happened.

Corrupt Traffic Policewoman Complains: "It Was A Bad Week, I Only Made Kshs 36,000"
A good week usually yields between Kshs 45,000 and 50,000.
The traffic policewoman who is well known to matatu drivers in Mombasa arrived at the Coastal town a couple of months ago, a very "thin" woman but is today fairly bulky such that drivers usually spot her from quite a distance.
The lady has an account at Barclays Bank Digo road branch where she banks her ill-gotten gains and frequents a restaurant just around the corner, as you head towards Mwembe Tayari from the bank, where she usually orders chicken for breakfast.
I will not reveal her name or rank because I do not want to be like the Kenya Anti Corruption Commission which focuses on the small fish while letting the big fish go.
Last month, a traffic policeman was shown on television swallowing a Kshs 50 note in bribe money after being confronted by anti corruption police along Kajiado road. The same KACC that has failed to bring to justice a single cabinet minister over the Anglo Leasing scum even after plenty of evidence has been availed.
What happens is that the traffic policemen just get more cautious but do not stop taking bribes from motorists who are more than willing to part with a few hundred shillings to avoid being booked for offences that attract hefty fines in thousands of shillings.
In Machakos, the corruption story left me thinking very hard and sympathizing with straight cops, or rather cops who were not exposed to such lucrative money-minting opportunities. The situation was in the police lines where a CID officer was forced to move out of the area because in his neighbors home, who happens to be a junior traffic policeman, chicken and meat was the order of the day while in his home it was the infamous Sukuma Wiki Kale greens most of the time which caused his kids to envy and even hate their well fed neighbors. The most disturbing fact was that the CID officer was more senior in rank compared to the traffic cop.
Among most traffic 'bases' in the country, the rates for corruption are almost similar with Nissan Matatus parting with Sh 50 while buses have to give Sh 100. Those ferrying contraband like charcoal and other smuggled goods can cough up to Sh 5,000 or more depending on the value of the goods.
It is as a result of this graft, that in recent times unknown gunmen have killed some traffic policemen and bosses in mysterious circumstances. A case in point is a senior traffic boss in Thika who was assassinated two years ago in front of his family as he stopped on the roadside to buy fruits. He had about Shs 15,000 in the pocket that the gunmen did not bother to steal hence depicting an execution.
Another traffic policeman was shot dead in Mombasa early this year after leaving a bar in the wee hours of the night. It was yet another execution as he was not robbed.
In many cases, these executions could be over a deal gone bad with unscrupulous transporters or the estranged husband of the woman he was having an affair with, the truth will probably never be known.
Because they always having cash in the pocket, traffic policemen are notorious for extra marital affairs especially with married women, which has resulted in many of them contracting AIDS due to the promiscuous behavior they adopt in spending their easily acquired cash.
Besides ruining the economy, corruption also has a toll on those practicing it, especially the receiver of the money who is literally consumed by the cash through philandering and other anti social activities that could easily lead to their destruction and even death.

Is Washington Supporting Kibaki For Re-election?
In fact a very interesting operation is going on even as you read this, on the Kenyan coast off Lamu where officially a joint military training exercise is taking place. However we all know that many suspected terrorists have been arrested trying to enter Kenya through Lamu. There is also the fact that the huge American ship patrolling the area is equipped with powerful satellite equipment used to patrol the Coast and in fact the entire region on the Kenyan borders, using the latest satellite technology. So now we know why Kenyan security forces are suddenly so efficient in guarding the country's porous borders. The same borders through which so many illegal arms have been pouring through into the country in recent times so much so that some government statistics put the current ratio of illegal guns in the country at one to every 300 Kenyans.
Rail Odinga believes that the American government is supporting Kibaki for re-election. This blogger does not agree. It is clear that the deals made between the two governments have been done with fighting terror as the main objective, not the forthcoming elections. Actually if truth be told, the Americans are not comfortable with President Kibaki and chances are high that covert operations will be discreetly launched by the only remaining super power on earth later this year to ensure that Kibaki is not re-elected. This could include the funding of credible candidates. Which is exactly what the Americans unsuccessfully did against President Moi in 1997.

Why ODM-Kenya Aborted London Meeting
At first we were told that it was bonding trip so that the party high command can agree on their presidential candidate without self-destructing. Yesterday we were told that the ODM-Kenya team had a full itinerary and bonding sessions would virtually be impossible.
The two Kenyan dailies, namely the Nation and the Standard have covered the latest developments in different angle probably reflecting on which side of the divide top editors at the dailies fall. The Standard says the meeting has been cancelled but the Daily Nation says that both Uhuru and Kalonzo amongst others will skip the London rendezvous.
It is clear to this writer that the original session involving most of the ODM-Kenya presidential aspirants has been called off.
But then there is the question of whether everybody's input was involved in the cancellation of the trip because others went ahead with travel plans. Acting secretary general Anyang Nyongo traveled to London from Nairobi last night while Raila Odinga who was in the United States made his way there from Florida.
Insiders whisper that the real reason why the trip was called off was because it was being heavily financed by Gilbert "Miracle babies" Deya. Deya while denying the financing side says that he has been heavily involved in the organization of the trip and posed the question to a journalist yesterday via telephone; "What is wrong with that?"
Apparently some self-righteous ODM luminaries felt that the trip was a PR disaster if the main organizer was going to be Deya. Or was somebody trying to slight Raila Odinga who is said to be very close to the miracle babies bishop? This blogger has had evidence of a relationship of sorts between Deya and one Kalonzo Musyoka, (see this photo that was posted on the web long before the miracle babies saga came to light). If you want to see where the photo was originally posted online (click HERE)
It seems that the Bishop is playing politics to help him stay out of prison—at least Kenyan prisons that is, which is nothing new, a vast majority of Kenyan politicians have successfully used this strategy for years now.
But even stranger is the fact that those talking about the possible PR disaster of a Deya-organized trip have done things that are equally criminal, if not more so because of the huge number of Kenyans that will be affected for a very long time by their actions of sheer greed.
Even more interesting is the fact that the British government is now slowly tightening the noose in shutting out persons who have been involved in corruption and mega scandals I the past from entering Britain. Which raises yet another even more interesting question; what would happen if Kenyans elected a president who can't get a visa to enter Britain?
If it was up to this blogger, I would have used getting to London as part of the elimination process for the ODM presidential candidate nomination. That would have easily cut down the number dramatically because the chances of the following ODM presidential candidates getting a visa to enter Britain are very slim indeed; William "YK92" Ruto, Musalia "Goldenberg" Mudavadi, Mutula "Various corrupt mega deals" Kilonzo.
Interestingly Ruto was lucky enough to have been granted a visa last year, but the noose is now rapidly tightening and chances are that by the end of the year half the guys most Kenyans are rooting for president (in both ODM and Narc-Kenya may not be able to get a Visa to enter most European countries and the United States. Some presidential candidates we have in Kenya.

Why The Kibaki Government Is Not Doing Enough About Security And Escalating Crime
Many times politicians have looked to make political mileage and capital from this subject. This is sad because people's safety and lives are really not something to joke or haggle about.
Kenyans must now quickly analyze their own government and decide if the Kibaki administration is doing enough about security and whether it is adequately protecting not only it's own citizens but also the people who visit the country. We will also need to do something a little more painful and look inwards into ourselves to find out if we too have been responsible for the sorry state of affairs that we find ourselves in today.
I was fortunate enough in the 1980s to have had a chance to live briefly in the North Eastern province in Garissa town. It was a small peaceful-looking town but then looks can be deceiving because one day (after I had been there for barely a month) we heard loud sirens blaring right across town. Neighbors told us it was a security problem. To cut a very long story short, at the end of it all I had learnt a lot about the Somali that I previously did not know. How they always look so innocent and maybe even incapable of too much intellectual exertion, but are in fact extremely crafty and very dangerous (the Americans made the same mistake during the Clinton administration with tragic consequences).
On the night the sirens blared a Somali man had coolly walked into a bar and opened fire, killing scores. It was said that he was on a revenge mission and that his target was a Kenya Wildlife Services warden who was believed to have been at the bar. It was however unclear whether or not he had gotten him. The man then disappeared into the scrubs surrounding the town. It is said that Somali men can easily cross the vast dry wasteland on a glass of water for days on end when other mortals would die of thirst half way through. They are also extremely good at hiding weapons, especially their favored weapon of choice, the AK47 which can be buried and then later dug out and still operate with ruthless efficiency.
This information is critical for you to understand the real state of our security in Kenya today. More so the big security problem we have right in the backyard of the capital city of Nairobi. In a place called Eastleigh.
Up to the early 1980s Eastleigh was the estate of choice for government civil servants because of its' proximity to the city center. Meaning that on bad days of the month one could comfortably walk into town. Shortly after Somalian president Siad Barre was toppled in 1991, there was an invasion of the estate by refugees from Somalia. They just moved in and those who could raise complaints were quickly paid off in hefty bribes.
Today, Eastliegh in my book is not part of Kenya. It is part of Mogadishu for all intents and purposes. Picture this. During a fire that broke out in the notorious Garissa shopping center about a year ago, police arrived to find several Somali "watchmen" guarding goods that had been rescued from the fire from being looted after the fire was put under control. The "watchmen" were all armed, and not with rungus like is usually the case, but with AK 47 automatic weapons. But even stranger was the fact that the police who arrived on the scene did absolutely nothing and they also said nothing. I would bet you a year's supply of Ugali and nyama choma that those weapons were not licensed. In fact it is not possible for any private citizen in Kenya to get a license to carry around an automatic weapon. Licenses are usually for pistols and small weapons.
So it is clear Mogadishu lawlessness governs Eastliegh and not Kenyan laws. Besides taxes are never paid for the goods on sale at the estate, and that is why they are so cheap.
Eastleigh is a security disaster that the government does nothing about. Yet many weapons that kill and maim Kenyans come in through this Nairobi estate, in fact Eastleigh is the main "shopping center" for illegal weapons.
This is just one reason why Kenyans should stop and reconsider when negative travel advisories are issued against the country because the government is really not doing enough to help guarantee security in the country.

Security Problems In Kenya Today: The Trouble Is That Nothing Alarms The President
Like the deadly Rift Valley Fever that had to claim dozens of lives before the government could even start to react. Or the Mathare massacres last year that had to wait for an outcry from the International community and a moving but stren statement from the leader of the opposition, Uhuru Kenyatta, for the President to step in.
The examples are endless and as much as Kenyans are increasingly wary of what the American and British governments have to say about security in Kenya and travel advisories, the truth is that the Kenyan government is a little asleep when it comes to security matters.
This has led some analysts to the conclusion that security was better during the dark Moi days, which is the saddest thing that I have heard in a long time, especially because it is true.
We live in a world that has changed and where security is such a key and fundamental issue that everything else comes second. Definitely a very different environment from what Security minister experienced as a DO torturing Mau Mau suspects during the colonial days.
It is clear that many of our aging decision makers are hardly capable of appreciating this new situation let alone moving quickly enough to deal with it.
It is whispered that the frightening thing facing the president's handlers currently is the reaction of president Kibaki when he is told of the possibility that he may be the first president in the history of Kenya to serve only one term. He behaves exactly as he did when he was warned that he would lose the referendum over the new constitution—and that is he is unconcerned.
There is a huge difference between remaining calm over an issue as you consider your course of action and being unconcerned (which means that you don't take any action). It is clear that this government is unconcerned about many things, but the one issue that could have deadly consequences for Kenyans and those in Kenya if this approach persists is security. And that is really what foreign governments in Nairobi are so concerned about. And it is also what these frequent negative travel advisories that irritate Kenyans are all about.

Yellow And Without Equal
Gold is without equal as an investment product. This investment product is usually available in coin or ingot form. Which means that every gold investor has a choice to what form of the precious metal they would like to invest in.
One extremely reputable company that an international investor can use effectively to invest in gold is the Monex Deposit Company (MDC). This is where you can purchase gold or other precious metals for immediate personal delivery or arrange for convenient and safe storage of your valuable investment at an independent bank or depository.
Amazingly for over 30 years, the Monex companies have been America’s gold and precious metals investment leader.

London ODM Bonding Session: Does The Past Of A Presidential Candidate Matter?
It is truly ironic that some ODM presidential aspirants are getting problems obtaining visas to enter Britain due to their corrupt pasts. The irony is that their corrupt pasts have partly been responsible for the plight of the Kenyan illegals living in London who are now due to be deported at any time if the British government makes good their recent threats. Their actions contributed in a big way to making life unbearable in Kenya which has caused many Kenyans to seek opportunities elsewhere.
William Ruto for instance made his fortune from the notorious activities of the Youth For Kanu '92 group which flooded the country with 500 bob notes—distributed in cartons—that created inflation at unprecedented rates making many Kenyans pupers overnight and generally was the beginning of some of the very serious financial woes and hopelessness faced by many Kenyans today.
The question Kenyans need to ask themselves is; do we have any business condoning presidential candidates who are known thieves of public funds and more corrupt than the thugs the Kenyan police are currently cracking down on?
What happens if William Ruto gets elected, or his Youth for Kanu accomplice Cyrus Jirongo? Will Kenyans be proud? What message will the voters be sending out to the candidates? That as long as a candidate is rich enough, it matters little how they made their money?
In fact if truth be told none of the current presidential candidates should be standing for president as they ALL have stinking skeletons in their closets. This blog has been littered by Kenyans spreading hate against certain communities of fellow Kenyan in the guise of rooting for their favored presidential candidates. But let us face the truth squarely in the face today and analyze our front runner presidential material in great detail;
Raila Odinga: We have been accused of being stooges for Raila and this blogger has been called all sorts of names including "smelly foreskin". However the truth of the matter is that although Raila looks extremely clean standing next to other ODM-Kenya so-called luminaries, he too has his own skeletons. This blogger has evidence proving that Raila made deals with retired President Moi in 2002 when his then NDP party merged with Kanu. The deal saw Raila gain part ownership of the controversial molasses plant in return for assuring former president Moi that he would never pursue the still unsolved gruesome murder of the late Foreign minister Dr Robert Ouko. But the latest political blunder that Raila has made according to me is to accommodate every corrupt thief and former Kanu crook in ODM-Kenya. They are in fact the source of his many current problems that have caused the party that many Kenyans see as their only hope to retreat to London for a so-called bonding session. How do you bond with the devil?
Can ODM-Kenya, which is really Kanu 2001/early 2002, bring genuine change to Kenya if they form the next government? You decide.
Kalonzo Musyoka: In recent times his supporters have outdone even the notorious Mount Kenya mafia in terms of being abusive and generally using foul language on the Internet at the least excuse to defend their candidate. Recently we have been accused in this blog of Kalonzo-bashing when all we were doing was reporting the facts and the main cause for the tensions within ODM.
But despite everything, can his supporters sober up for a minute and sincerely answer a simple question. Who is the real Kalonzo Musyoka? The man who still calls Moi a statesman? The man who went round Rift Valley promising the Kalenjin that if elected president he would protect them? (It is not clear what he is supposed to protect them from). The man who used a title deed entrusted in his care by a client to sell off land secretly to a firm linked to him? Or is he the man who called a press conference to tell Kenyans that Kamba MPs DO NOT practice witchcraft and are clean? Can the man who stayed in Kanu until the very last minute, the man who hides in toilets during crucial votes in parliament, the man who disappears when there is a demonstration. Can that man bring genuine change to Kenya?
At least these two leading candidates are worth analyzing. The rest do not deserve to even be mentioned. Many of them need to first explain to Kenyans how they obtained their vast wealth.

Somali Clan Wars Now Spread Into Kenya
It is these apparently small incidents that lead to deadly events and what happened in Eastleigh yesterday, should never be allowed to happen again even if it means deporting hundreds of Somali's back to their own war torn country.
The injured girl who comes from the same clan as the Somali president is just but another illegal immigrant in Kenya probably like her assailant who had no right in attacking the innocent girl. It is through such actions that animosity between the two rival clans could boil over and lead to a deadly battle with innocent Kenyans being caught in the cross fire.
This incident also raises an issue that I have often repeated here. And that is the fact that Eastleigh is nothing but a time bomb, which the authorities continue to ignore. The notorious city estate has now been christened "Mogadishu" due to the high number of Somali nationals in the area who have virtually taken over the neighborhood. Their main business activity is mainly the selling of smuggled goods from neighboring countries.
It is also in Eastleigh that one can acquire a firearm with minimum hustle and the government should move in and regain control of the situation before it is too late because Eastliegh is a tragedy waiting to happen.
The Somali problem has been with us for the past two decades ever since their government collapsed after president Siad Barre was deposed by rival clan militia in a deadly war that resulted to hundreds of thousands of Somali's fleeing to Kenya.
Most of them found refuge in Eastleigh where many of their relatives had settled while the few who were rich and influential made their way to Europe and North America, especially Canada and the Nordic countries where they quickly found ways of being granted asylum.
Among those who came to Kenya were tough criminals and gang members of the various militia's operating in Somali and many managed to smuggle small arms and other contraband through the border to sell in Nairobi for the sake of survival.
If the government was really serious about arresting the rising crime rate in the country, especially gun related violence, they should start with a major operation in Eastleigh and its environs and will be surprised at what they will find hidden under the guise of "water broof watches" and fake designer jeans which are peddled 24 hours a day as Nairobi's "Mogadishu" never goes to sleep.

Latest US Terror Alert Over Mombasa Marathon Irks Kenyan Government
I say unprecedented because the Americans chose to release the information through the media without informing the country's security apparatus first, a move that has irked the Kenyan authorities with internal security minister John Michuki saying they are in the process of sending a protest note to Washington.
The way the Americans have disseminated this information shows that they are not sure of their intelligence and simply want the Kenyan authorities to increase security during the games for various reasons.
Local Muslims recently demonstrated in Mombasa over what they termed as harassment by the anti terrorist police who routinely hold suspects for more than the stipulated period and also have no qualms holding children in custody. The demonstrators threatened to disrupt the championships if their colleagues were not released.
The United States has recently completed an operation in Somali where scores of locals were killed in an air raid that saw US forces open their deadly "fire" in a remote Somali village killing dozens of people including women and children in what they said was an Al Qaeda hideout where those involved in the US embassy bombing in Nairobi were holed up.
It is in the backdrop of these facts that the US feel that some Islamic group could strike Kenya for assisting the Americans to launch their attack on Somali as the championship does not qualify as an ideal Al Qaeda target since they will be very few Americans participating in the event.
The way the Americans have released the latest information seems to be proof that they do not have any intelligence on an imminent attack and what they are doing is mere speculation that is why they chose not to sit down with Kenya's security officials to discuss the threat as they would only have done so if they had concrete proof.
What America have done in the process is to ruin Kenya's image and will make the country lose millions of shillings in anticipated business that could have resulted from the success of the competition. With these kind of threats, many competitors are bound to skip the event and even assurances from the hosts that security will be enhanced will not be enough to change their minds.

What Is Charity "Mama Rainbow" Ngilu Really Up To?
Is she trying to quickly take advantage of the rapidly waning popularity of one Kalonzo Musyoka, her rival for supremacy in Ukambani for many years? Or is she the desperate woman with a flagging political career that most in the Kibaki regime are trying to paint her as.
Firstly there are a few little known facts about Charity Ngilu's real power in Ukambani. Many have suggested that in a popularity contest in Ukambani she would stand no chance against Kalonzo. This is not true. To start with she enjoys the unique advantage of holding formidable sway in both Kitui and Machakos. In the days before Kambaland was divided into many districts there were just two, Kitui and Machakos. At times there has been open rivalry between the two that has divided the Kamba community right down the middle. These old rivalries still crop up when political temperatures rise. Ngilu's huge advantage is that she holds sway on both sides of the divide. She is originally from Mbooni in Machakos but got married to a man from Kitui where her current political base is. The person who would really sweat it out (even if they were to ultimately win) in a political contest between the two would be Kalonzo because apart from her influence in Kitui and the environs, Ngilu is hugely popular in her native Machakos. With recent political developments many believe that Ngilu would easily win such a contest just now.
It is also no secret that Ngilu has used her Health portfolio to gain immense political capital. Some (including this blogger would say that she has abused her office). Ngilu's appointments at the ministry are notorious for being able to answer fluently to the popular greeting Mwi Aseo which means in Kamba, are you guys fine? In sharp contrast, Kalonzo has done nothing for the Akamba even as he aspires to be a national leader.
Many inexperienced analysts are saying that Ngilu has been inconsistent in her political stand. The truth is that you will rarely meet a shrewder politician. During the referendum, it was obvious that there was no political capital to be gained immediately from being on the Orange side. Besides retired president Moi was on that side and Ngilu still hates him with a passion. So Ngilu went Banana and supported Kibaki—with conditions. At the end of the day she got what she wanted.
Now that the elections are around the corner, Ngilu has to quickly re-invent herself. It is therefore not surprising that she has chosen to hit out at the government at every opportunity she gets as a way of endearing herself to the public so as to be perceived as a 'hero' for taking a shot at her employers.
In her latest salvo, Ngilu accused the government of being arrogant and aloof as well as reneging on the promises made in 2002, having thrown collective responsibility through the window, Ngilu added that the government has failed the people of Kenya. The exact sentiments of a large section of the ordinary folk in Kenya at the moment.
There is no doubting the fact that what Ngilu is going for this time round is not bargaining power, but the highest price of all. Namely the presidency of Kenya. She has no doubt been closely following developments at ODM-Kenya where tensions are most likely going to lead to the much-anticipated split. In all the chaos that is sure to follow, Ngilu is carefully positioning herself as the ideal possible compromise candidate.
Her critics and enemies will these days not fail to point out the damaging sex scandal that hit the attractive middle-aged politician late last year when she was reportedly caught in the back of her Mercedes vehicle in a compromising position with her alleged long time lover Tony Gachoka. The incident was at the Parklands sports club where the drunken couple was caught red handed by the clubs security guard whom Gachoka threatened to no avail as he reported the matter to club authorities who withdrew his membership.
A few months later in December, the minister's husband died in South Africa after a long battle with hypertension and diabetes that was aggravated by his bad drinking habits. Gachoka wore a white band on his left arm over his black suit during the funeral and was among the main organizers.
Soon after the funeral, Ngilu was secretly admitted at a private clinic near Nairobi hospital where she stayed for three days. Close confidants say she was suffering from depression and exhaustion. To her, the world was falling apart, they add. Since her trusted political friends in government had betrayed her, her husband was dead and the alternative media had extensively covered her sex scandal with the notorious city gigolo.
But those who know Ngilu insist that depression and exhaustion are not the sort of things you associate with the daring Ngilu who fought Kanu at a time when few men (including one Kalonzo Musyoka) had the balls to even whine. They also argue that what Ngilu does in her private time is not anybody's business just like nobody pokes their noses into what her male colleagues in the august house usually get up to, even when they are supposed to making up the quorum to discuss pressing national issues.
If Ngilu does make another stub at the presidency, then she will have the huge advantage of a previous similar experience in 1997, which will no doubt be a huge advantage. Sadly the biggest disadvantage will be the fact that Kenyan voters (just like their counterparts in America) may not be quite ready for a woman president just yet.

Annonymous Nation Media Group Whistleblowers: The Real Reason Why Some Of You Are So Angry At Them
Even more interesting are the suggestions by some that the aggrieved workers should have opted to seek legal redress in the courts instead.
There is no denying that this course of action is crude in many respects. Still it is very important that Kenyans understand the real reason behind this reaction from some quarters. This is because it illustrates perfectly what I will call the "big Kenyan divide." This is what I always think of as the huge, dark and widening hole that divides the two real "tribes" in Kenya today—most will call them classes.
On one side are the privileged financially comfortable Kenyans. These are the Kenyans whose first question is NEVER "how much will it cost?" Fascinatingly within this group are numerous naïve Kenyans who have hardly been exposed to the stark realities on the ground in their own country. They can never understand why youngsters will take to crime when there is so much opportunity in Kenya to make money legally (legally in their books includes giving bribes to get a huge tender from some NGO). To them people who sleep hungry and the have-nots in Kenya are just plain idiots. You will never convince them that the poor in Kenya are NOT fools.
On the other side of this rapidly widening chasm are the majority of Kenyans. Those who worry about everything (the truth is that many have given up and don't worry anymore). They worry about things as basic as where the next meal is going to come from. In contrast these are the people whose first anxious question is always; "how much will it cost." In this group you will also find those desperately trying to climb out of the bottomless pit called poverty and lack. Some will have been fortunate enough to have gotten a good job, but they will always worry about how long they will manage to keep it. These are the Kenyans who wake up at night sweating and with their hearts beating violently against their chest after a nightmare where the only thing that happened is that they lost their precious job.
My point is that you really need to be in this second group to know how limited the options really are in reality. Especially when somebody from the other class has aggrieved you.
I will give you a very simple example.
Somebody owes you money. So you do what many Kenyans have always done. You get some police contacts and bribe them to arrest the person and throw them into a police cell (where they will rub shoulders with Simon Matheri's countless reincarnations) until they can pay off your debt. And sure enough their relatives get together and raise the money, which by this time also includes the hefty bribe to the cops. So you easily get what is justice in your eyes. But woe unto you if the person who owes you money belongs to the other class? No cop is stupid enough to go and arrest somebody at Lavington and throw them into the police cells. That would be plain suicide. And incidentally the Lavington crowd is the group that is most notorious for not paying their bills. Poor people always make a huge effort to pay their bills, at least most of them.
Even if you find a cop stupid enough to accompany you to Lavington or Kileleshwa to arrest somebody over the 7,000 bob that they owe you, they are bound to hesitate because all cops know the law. And they also know that the first thing the well-heeled will always do in such cases is call their lawyer. The lawyer will ask for an arrest warrant, and the lawyer will also question the legality of just picking up somebody and throwing them into police cells and keeping them there for more than 48 hours without charging them. But if you insist on a charge, the one without a lawyer can always be charged with something like being in possession of bhang.
I have just proved that Kenyans are governed by two different sets of laws. There are laws for the Kubafus and then there are the laws for the well-heeled. But what is even more painful is the fact that most of those Kenyans living in those plush estates and whom cops do not want to mess around with, are actually criminals. Many of them are the ancestors of criminally corrupt Kenyans who made their money through corruption. Worse still some of these people are directly impossible for most of the poverty in the country today by fanning hyper inflation through Goldenberg-like or Anglo Leasing-like mega deals that put fortunes in their pockets but at the same time consigned millions of Kenyans to life-long poverty.
But I am getting carried away here. The point is that it is persons in this group who are really upset with the whistle blowers. It beats them why they did not go to court to seek legal redress. It hurts them that "the innocents" are involved. The innocents are the wives and the children of the alleged sex pests who end up reading the gory details of what their husbands and dads have been up to on the Internet. Conveniently they will NOT think of all the people who have been hurt losing their livelihoods because they were not in a position to drop their panties (some don't have them in the first place since they are men).
What the Nation whistle-blowers have done is crazy but what options did they really have? What the Mau Mau did in the 1950s was really crude, but what options did they have?
…Perhaps the Mau Mau should have simply filed a case in the high court seeking the return of their grabbed land from the colonialists. Maybe they didn't do it because they were not educated. They would have saved the country a lot of blood shed—Dedan Kimathi and company. Would they not have?

Safaricom Launches Money Transfer Service
Safaricom launched an SMS money transfer service.
The service will initially be available countrywide and soon in East Africa and beyond. For as little as Kshs 55, anybody will now be able to transfer funds to any Safaricom subscriber countrywide. Actually up to Kshs 35,000 at a time.
This dramatically changes the ball game. It means that many business opportunities will suddenly open up to the enterprising and innovative. Many businesses that were unviable before yesterday will suddenly be hot new opportunities for those who can move fast.
It also means that the Postapay service by the Postal Corporation of Kenya is in big trouble. The marketers at the State corporation will now need to urgently reposition their service. Posta officials say the parastatal has been raking in Kshs 16 million daily.
What really promises to make the new service so attractive is the fact that folks can now pick up cash at major Safaricom outlets countrywide, which in effect takes this financial service deep into rural areas where banks have never been seen.
It also means a brand new profit center for Kenya's most profitable company. Actually catching up with Safaricom in terms of profitability will now be a very tall order and probably virtually impossible. Barring the unexpected, it also means that the expected Safaricom IPO will be extra sizzling red hot.
Late Extra
Nation Media group have today launched their brand new business daily titled, Business Daily. The giant newspaper company has decided to use the same colour newsprint used for the world renowned Financial Times of London and the price too clearly reflects the fact that it is not for everybody, retailing at a hefty Kshs 50. I will be reviewing the new business newspaper (actually the first business daily in the region) later. It can be viewed online at www.bdafrica.com

Why Is Sally Kosgei Going Into Politics Via ODM-Kenya?
Through it all Dr. Kosgei managed to become fabulously rich through corruption and other dirty deals that were the order of the day during Moi's era.
Today, Dr Sally Kosgei is a worried woman. She has several cases pending in court including one where she is accused of grabbing a Kenya railways house and selling it at an inflated price to a parastatal organization and in the process making a tidy sum of money at the expense of Kenyans.
And there are other cases where they are witnesses who are more than willing to testify in a bid to exert revenge for her arrogance and brutality while she was head of the public service and secretary to the cabinet.
During her hey days as cabinet secretary, it is said that ministers feared her so much that they would not dare interrupt her when she spoke in cabinet meetings and those who differed in opinion chose other channels to make it known but not by addressing her directly.
Today, Sally seems to have been humbled and is contemplating joining politics in a bid to protect her vast wealth now being threatened.
She is considering contesting a parliamentary seat in her Kericho home district and her party of choice is ODM-Kenya which she of course believes will form the next government. And being an MP from the influential Rift Valley province, she could stand a fairly good chance of being considered for a cabinet post which could put her in a perfect position to protect her wealth.
What she really has to worry about are the numerous enemies she made while serving the previous government. For one, ODM-Kenya leading light Kalonzo Musyoka detests her. He was the minister she slapped while she was PS in foreign affairs.
There are plenty of others who would ensure that she does not get close to power again and will do anything and spend almost anything to make sure that she loses in the party nomination stage so as to suffer humiliation in public and snuff out her political career before it even begins.

Breaking News: Date Rape Incident
After my letters to the CNN-Executives, Jeff Koinange has called me (he is at the moment in Ghana). We spoke for more than 1 hour on the phone. He apologized for the incident in London telling me that it was mainly based on the pressure he had been under after the problems arising from the Nigerian Report the week before.
I have accepted his apologies and we have agreed that we will continue having contacts on a strictly professional basis. He has offered to make a special Interview and a special Report in Inside-Africa during the next months connected to the forthcoming General Elections in Kenya. I have agreed to this.
I therefore want to confirm that I will not pursue the matter which happened in London. I will also confirm this in an official letter which I will send to the Executives of CNN.
Jeff Koinange is an excellent Journalist and I think Africa (and the world) needs somebody like him. He has a lot to offer - and I am the last to judge him on that regrettable incident in London, especially now when his wife is expecting their first child.
Marianne Briner
Ms Briner also took the opportunity to make a correction in my earlier report to the effect that Jeff's wife was not in London with him at the time of the regrettable incident. She had actually gone to pick up her husband in Joburg at the airport when the armed robbery incident happened.
Kumekucha says: After the trauma Ms Brinner suffered in London, she is very brave and a unique human being to have taken the decision that she has. Hopefully her going public with this in the first place will not have been in vain and those of us men who may want to take advantage of women with abandon, will in future think twice.
Accordingly this matter will not be pursued any further in this blog.

Kenyan Date Rape Journalist: The Plot Thickens
The furious victim whose identity I also reveal today sent off this email letter on Saturday;
From: Marianne briner
To: jim.walton
Subject: jeff koinange - confidential
Date: Sat, 3 Mar 2007 23:45:28 +0000
Dear Mr. Walton,
I had sent in August last year to Jeff Koinange the official Press Release of my Book "A Shining Star in Darkness" which talks about the killing of the former Kenyan Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Robert Ouko in 1990. I had been involved in the investigations and cooperated with Scotland Yard and gave last evidence in front of a Parliamentary Committee in Nairobi in November/December 2004.
Jeff replied immediately and proposed to have an interview with CNN in Atlanta and to present the book in Inside-Africa.
Soon after he started to call me and things changed to very private and personal matters. He then sent me by email photos showing him and Mandela (comment: sharing a special moment with a special friend), the photo of the Prix-Bayeux-Ceremony (comment: so now you know about if even before my wife does ...) and also some photos showing his Living-Room with his Art Collection (comment: I want you to know how I am living...) and then the book about his Grandfather (one copy he sent also to my daughter) - comment: This will give you an insight who I really am and where I come from ...
During all this time he kept me also informed about his job, his assignments, either by phone (sometimes 3 - 4 times per day) or by email (here even upto 10 per day) sent from different places like Darfur, Congo, Botswana, Malaway etc. and last from Nigeria - besides the 'normal' ones from Johannesburg.
Especially the Nigerian Report was then also a point of our discussion now in London when he gave me some inside information how he had arranged the encounter with these MEND people (" of course I had to pay certain people to get the story - but everything was done in agreement with CNN and in accordance with their usual standards - but you do not get such a story without bribing - you know how the world and especially in Nigeria functions - you have to have financial resources - but at the end it was worth it - CNN has its story and I have my 'fame' ......)
The rest of our 'encounter' in London can be read in the attached document. It was nasty and now has turned into an open threat on my life since he warned me that he would give the details of my Spanish address and my Swiss one (where also my daughter lives) to Nicolas Biwott (in my book named Nick Boit).
Especially the last sentence 'if I was prepared to 'MOVE' again' has made me decide to go with whole story into the open. I have to protect not only myself but also my daughter.
Here you should know that I am living in fear since 15 years - I had to move more than a dozen times - and John Troon (retired Superintendent from Scotland Yard who at that time was leading the investigations in Kenya and with whom I am in contact since) has just now confirmed to me in London that I am still in danger.
When he heard that I am in contact with Jeff Koinange, he told me in very strict words 'you have made a very big mistake to trust a man like him. He will sell you for a good story and also to Biwott - I am even convinced that he has set you up just for this reason ...."
After what has happened in London I am starting to believe him. But I have decided to fight back. I have never been a coward and Jeff should know this. Just read his last emails where he is begging me not to disclose anything because it would 'destroy' him.
I had given him time until March 10 to come here and clarify things and to assure me of the introduction to CNN - but he has decided to threaten me instead.
I have sent the attached document already to Femi Oke together with some remarks Jeff made about her which are very offensive. It should make her a bit careful when dealing with him in the future since he is not the 'nice guy' as he pretends to be.
As I said before, I had hoped to settle his whole nasty matter amicably in arranging the promised interview with CNN and also with Oprah Winfrey whom he had also mentioned would be interested to present my book on her Show. But he has decided not to accept my offer and has started to issuee serious threats against me.
I am therefore going into the open and will start my blog under the title 'The secret life of Jeff Koinange" ............
(The attached documents sent to the CNN bosses contained detailed emails contents of which I covered yesterday. They are yet to reply).
