Violence Mars Vijana Tugutuke Function In Garissa: Are The Old Men Feeling The Heat?

The unthinkable happened. What could otherwise have been an entertaining youth function organized by the 'Vijana Tugutuke' group on sensitizing the youth on the importance of voting, turned into a violent confrontation as a mob emerged from nowhere and began throwing missiles at those in attendance.

Garissa, a dessert town in north eastern province of Kenya where nothing happens was turned into a battle field to the chagrin of leading local musicians, Nameless and Nonini who were at hand to entertain the crowd but instead found themselves dashing for cover as missiles flew.

The electoral commission of Kenya said they only managed to register 125 new voters as a result of the fracas with fingers being pointed at older politicians who do not want the youth to aspire for parliamentary seats in the forthcoming general elections.

Vijana Tugutuke is a lobby group comprising of youths who are advocating for their peers to get voting cards and ensure they participate in the forthcoming elections by voting for young leaders so that they can take control of their destiny.

The group has made enormous strides in their advocacy by inviting popular local musicians and comedians to perform at their functions hence attracting big crowds of the youth to the detriment of the old politicians.

This could be the reason why an old, tired and paranoid politician from Garissa could have hired a group of youths to disrupt the function so as to ensure the young guys don’t register as voters and vote him out in the December general elections.

An official of the lobby group, Ms Koki Muli said they will not be deterred by what happened over the weekend and vowed to double their efforts to ensure the youth captured a sizeable amount of seats in parliament as they are the majority in Kenya but have previously been easily manipulated by bribes from elderly politicians.

What is evident is that the group will hold a lot of sway in the forthcoming elections as far as who captures the parliamentary seats irrespective of party affiliation, as the young voters will be considering age above everything else. It is widely believed that elderly politicians will now get a proper run for their money this time round.
