Will Plain Cigarette Packaging Come To Kenya Soon?

Tobacco companies have been very effective in staying in the game despite the rising tide of anti-smoking campaigns all over the world. In their arsenal of effective weapons are clever ad campaigns and attractive packaging.

However, now it seems that things are set to change dramatically. Yesterday the UK became the first country in the EU to pass a law decreeing plain packaging for cigarettes. A similar law was passed in Australia 4 years ago and figures show that smoking rates have fallen in that country as a result. Cigarette companies insist that the drop in sales is as a result of tax hikes a view most observers do not concur with.

The UK law will come into effect in May 2016.

Will we see the same law in Kenya soon?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that tobacco kills nearly six million people every year globally. Over five million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use, whilst more than 600,000 are non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.
