Why This Blogger Did Not Stay Silent About Jeff Koinange's Actions Even Though He Is A Personal Friend

archive

A few Kenyans have totally ignored the facts and are mostly angry at this blogger for exposing Jeff Koinange. Many of them are convinced that had I not revealed the infamous date rape in London, the most famous Kenyan journalist would not have lost his job with CNN international—although there is plenty of evidence that suggests differently. For those who care to examine the facts it is clear that Mr Koinange was in serious trouble long before a single word was written in this blog.

The general feeling amongst this small clique that has gotten very busy leaving comments here, seems to be that because he is one of our own, I should have protected him and never revealed the story to the world. So is this how journalism is practiced, by being selective of who you are going to expose and who you will spare? So it is okay to expose former President Moi but it is not okay to do the same with Jeff Koinange? Is this the corruption we want to entrench into this scared calling?

To them it matters little that sooner or later the whole story would have gotten out anyway, because all the damning emails are preserved somewhere at CNN headquarters in Atlanta and one day somebody else would have broken the story.

To these people (mostly men but also a few women) it matters little that the victim will carry more than just scars from the incident for the rest of her life. As you read this, she is trying to come to terms with what doctors have just told her. And you can be sure that it is directly related to the date rape incident. She will have to live with whatever she has for the rest of her life.

This is a story that is being followed by people all over the world who must find these angry Kenyans a very strange breed of people who are difficult to understand. Many of them have repeated over and over again that I should have told Jeff's side of the story as well. Well, for starters, he has refused to comment here. This blog as you can see allows for all sorts of comments even when it is so easy to selectively delete them. Still a keen reader of the distant lover's blog will clearly see Jeff's side of the story. Which is the fact that he is guilty. He seduced a news source and the whole affair (well documented in numerous email exchanges) ended up in the date rape incident. Rape is rape and even if a person desires you, if you force yourself on them and have sex without their consent, the word for that is "rape." It is as simple as that.

Jeff would have been the last person that I would have a personal vendetta against. More so because I know him personally and he has been my friend for many years. He did Kenyans proud by practicing his journalism with the very best in the world at CNN. But he put the country to shame with his actions and behavior out there which some Kenyans don't seem to realize will affect them badly for a long time. Can you imagine being introduced at some party and somebody asking you knowingly, "You said you are Kenyan?"

But most of all, I keep asking myself the question, would I have been able to live with my conscience keeping this information away from the public? The fact that the victim did not go to the police matters little. Many rape victims never go to the police and you probably have to be raped to fully understand why. There are many things in this life that cannot be explained using sheer logic.

Briefly I have no regrets over what I did and would, without hesitation, do it all over again if faced with a similar situation.

  1. You are a very unusual kind of 'friend', to do this and claim JK is your friend is, well unusual. I personally hate dealing with the likes of you, treacherous professional killers in blogger's clothing.
JK and Brinner know the truth, and I hope each gets back what they all truly deserve - I think Brinner has in her life had a fair share f woes for her blackmail already. Why do you want to follow her?Huu ni ukoloni sampuli gani, but do I say?

  2. To remain silent would clearly have been a big disservice to all women of the world (whether on the carpet or mezzanine floor). Kenyans must, to the least, admit that JK was not fired due to bad publicity. The jamaa drank from the ‘golden chalice’…. choking gluttonously I must add. He really should have read the ‘fine print’ on Mariannes’ underwear: DO AND DIE!!!
The quotas baying for Chris’ blood for his role in this fiasco are simply brainwashed cartoons harboring distorted understandings of Dr. Alfred Mutua’s maxim “Najivuna Kuwa Mkenya”. Believe you me; rape goes beyond the “don’t-hang-dirty-laundry-in-public” defense. This ‘hear no evil, see no evil’ mentality is the embodiment of our current social and political predicament. We continue to defend criminals in all circles and offer excuses on their behalf for evils they perpetrate on our being.
I’m sure some are critical of JKs trial in the media/blog. Was the guy really given a fair shot at defending himself? Remember this; In libel court, truth is the absolute defense.

Other than that, I have no strong opinion on the matter.

  3. Kalamari couldn't have been more right. Kenyans are spreading cheap patriotism too thin. Being one's friend never meant closing your eyes to his nudity. If only we would internalize the maxim that a true friend reminds your of your falliability. But alas, he we are gloating about being insensitive to JK. By the way only him 'jienjoyes' the sessions so why share his pain?

Chris the puncch in your last paragraph is seriously betrayed by your apologetic tone. You owe none any and if you wanted to then please take it back, we don't need it. No amount of 'youthwinging' must make you bend backwards under their porous sting to accommodate their egos. We are simply and shamelessly exporting our social and political bad manners (one of our own at all cost) at the price of our national pride.

  4. aiee, with friends like this who needs enemies. But then framing the issue as moral is confounding considering some of the accusations and positions you have placed yourslef in this blog - if its moral then start by being consistent. if your are just reporting then state that and no need to apologize start with that friendship bullshit

  5. Absolute load of rubbish, that is how i see it. Chris i can tell u that you are not only a hater, u such a pathological liar. It is as simple as that or I will tell u u dont understand a thing about friendship.

Look here gentlemen, I dont defend JK coz he's kenyan. No, it is coz he is a human being. For two crooks to sit down, compose a story and bring down a successful man is the height of jealousy and idleness. If JK is a rapist, then he belongs in jail. Marianne Brinner knows where she can get justice if she was raped. Since when did Chris become a judge? This is an uneviable conspiracy by two souls desperate for fame.

Since Chris , Kalamari, Taabu and the other 'champions of the raped' feel they have so much to do to fight the vice, then i challenge them not to stop at that. Since u guys, being the prosecutor, complainant and judge, are convinced Jk was guilty then you should procced to court. If the motive was to seek justice then u still have unfinished business. If it was malicious then u have achieved your goal.

I have one message for you though, what goes around comes around. Payday is coming and rest assured it has to come.

  6. actually, you need to get over yourself. I am a journalist... and I can tell you that you are not one... you are more like a tabloid reporter. Really, true journalists do not need to defend themselves... no not at all. Usually, their work speaks for itself, and is based not on rumors, but on real investigation. See the difference?

There is nothing wrong in having reported the Koinange saga, but it should have been done with journalism responsibility. And you are right, CNN's getting rid of Koinange had nothing to do with you.

  8. Much has been said and Chris had a spat with a Kenyan living in the States over this matter.
All visitors of Kumekucha just imagine any day in your lives where a rape victim, apart from Njeeri Wa Thiongo was announced in public. Rape victims have their IDS protected and even have High Court protection even after the case is concluded.
What was this special one that was brought to th public doman, even investigated and a ruling made on the net.
Chris Zhora has told you, you dont play judge as a journalist. You dont at all.

  9. Somebody said, Wakamba ni watu wa uwivu na fitina.
Youeven bragged that you were the first blog to report it. You started off that a famous Kenyan journalist working with CNN. There was no justice. You insinuated that it was rape. You were wrong. It was only an allegation.
An allegation that cannot and will never be confirmed because allegedly, a 'rape' case for the first time in the world, was heard on the web with you as judge and the prison warden. How do you feel that you have been on, and on and on about rape, rape, rape and even ask whether sisters wives or relatives have been raped.
the truth is, you are trying to publish a book and Brinner, just like she fabricated a lie that she was Moi's girlfriend, Njoroge Mungai's (note the high calibre) and then Jeff, people she can use for one reason or another to get to the greasy pole.
The truth is whether Jeff was guilty or not, will never be known and form your own good, and the pride that you have as the top Kenyan blog, just leave it to rest and deal with other things. Wish you the best in life.
Did you say that you are writing a book on Tom Mboya. If it is not plagiarised, then await what beckons. It is through this medium (website) that your project will face its armageddon similar to the one Jeff has been through.
At least he has the purgatory of an international career and can make a few coins from interviews on the same, but think of it. And you say wewe ni rafiki yake.
Read my opening statement and add that there are communities in Kenya which go for cheap and can do anything to malign. (Unga to vote for Moi, and now, internationally, promotion of a book to kill one's career. Sioyo mbaya, hata wahindi Westlands wanajua

  10. You say Jeff is your friend! What a shame. Then he should have replied by email, or even a phone call. Can we have your second name. I have been out with tens of Jeffs friends. can we know you and separate you from our lot. What is the cost of sending an email to Jeff if he is your friend. I think with such a story, even before you published it and was all over talking of the biggest story since the Nation scandal, you should have had even a 'NO' word from him. Meaning that as 'long term friends' he could have told you 'Chris dont do it.
Finally, if you thought you had a conscience as you have said it SHEEPISHLY, then you have none. Hauna haibu. Pole to tell you that. YOU ARE THE LOWEST OF THE LOW, if you are a friend!

  11. Granted friendship mean so many things to many people. Mostly it is reduced to scratch my back and I scratch yours. No wonder our politicians have perfected the art to the extent that we shamelessly rally to their defence once accused of anything.

Chris doesn't have have to be a judge leave alone a prosecutor to tell a story. Those shouting themselves hoarse and publishing their CVs here telling us they are journalists please spare us all that misplaced pride. Smart journalists are known from what they write and not what they mouth. And by the way blogs are not meant for journalists, or are they?

As they say the village in us is remains intact as we mount the moral dias pronouncing superlative loyalty to friends we have never met. Looking at the tribal slant to the vitrol above leaves one perplexed at how cheap we remain dispite the exposure outside. Stop the cheap lectures on morality and plastic patriotism. You can hit the roof (predictably) if you so wish but the truth won't go away and someone must tell it unfortunately that someone won't be you. Hold your peace, won't you?

  14. I have said this before and i will repeat, and somebody please correct me if i am wrong. this woman said they had SEX, she didnt say she was raped. it was rough she said (hehe) but she wasnt raped! Chris you are some friend. Thank God none of my friends are like you. and Taabu please! its okay to shut up if you have nothing to say. or try yawning. What in God's name are you gaining by dragging Jeff's name in muck this way. You and I have heard this woman claiming she has slept with all kenyans apart from me! and you dare call it rape. Thank you Vikii and Zohra.

  15. Chris,

You are entitled to report what you think is the truth. But since you claim to be a friend of JK, how much would have taken to find out his side of the story before running to this blog and condemn him as the date rapist? Did you sit and consider the credibility of Marriane before writing all you did?

Unfortunately, you have this all wrong, and there is little you can say to justify your actions.

  16. YOU SOUND MORE LIKE THIS TRAILER TRASH PIECE OF WHITE WHORE GOT YOU HOOKED TO GO AGAINST YOUR OWN. HOW MUCH IS SHE PAYING YOU TO RIDE ALONG WITH HER THAT YOU SOUND AS THOUGH YOU BOTH WAKE UP SIDE BY SIDE EACH MORNING TO BLOG ABOUT JEFF? YOU'RE THE KIND OF KENYANS I HATE THAT KISS UP TO WHITE TRASH AND THAT'S WHY AFRICA AS A WHOLE IS SO BEHIND. AFRICANS SNIFFING, KISSING AND SUCKING UP TO WHITE PEOPLE THAT ONLY WORK FOR OUR DOWN FALL AND GO BACK TO THEIR TERRITORIES LAUGHING AT US.
