South Africa is due to host the soccer World cup in 2010. Kenyans are not interested because their world ends and starts in December 2007.
South Africa recently run a feature on the opportunities that will be available for other African countries, and the report quoted the South African Ambassador lamenting on the Kenyan government’s reluctance to cash in on this event.
You and I know the soccer world cup is the biggest sporting event in the world. South African will feel the benefits of hosting this tournament for many years after it is all over. Yet again Hon. Kamanda and company seems not to be interested and no one in government seems to be aware of this potential. For instance if we could just have one of the top teams camp in Kenya prior to the tournament, it could be a very significant injection into our economy and it could also boost our Kenyan game. Many industries, most of all tourism will greatly benefit.
We already have the necessary infrastructure; world class hotels, fairly developed telecommunications, strategic location as a regional airport hub, not to mention a world class airline. So what is the problem?
Why isn’t anybody seeing this golden once in 100 years opportunity? To be fair there are at least some Kenyans who are awake. Actually one local insurance company that has started a savings scheme for Kenyan fans intending to travel to South Africa for the soccer bonanza.
