How free is the media in Kenya today?
While Kenyans rejoice that the days of Nyayo House torture terror are over and our media appears to be fairly free an uncensored, the truth is very different.
Actually a new kind of censoring and control of the press has come into place that is much more dangerous and effective than the one we saw in the old days and which this writer also suffered in the hands of.
One dangerous aspect is that in the dark Kanu days of press censorship everybody knew what was going on and Kenyans looked for information from other sources, like the BBC. Today everything seems to be okay and therefore Kenyans swallow everything fed to them by the press, hook line and sinker.
Remember the political analyst who was so critical of the Kibaki administration, Mutahi Ngunyi? What happened to his popular column in the Sunday Nation? Forget any official story issued by a PR department. What really happened?
Why has the Narc government announced that they want to draft a new bill to control the media?
And never forget that media houses are businesses and there are numerous stories that are “killed” every day because of the “wider commercial implications”.
The time has come for Kenyans to wise up and to absorb all the news they receive with an analytical mind and to embrace modern technology that gives the power of the media back to the people through websites, blogs and email. Remember what a critical and major part blogs played in the last American presidential elections?
