The journey of the smartphone began with the invention of the mobile phone in the 1970s. In 1973, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper made the first public call from a mobile phone, a breakthrough that would eventually lead to the mobile revolution. However, it wasn’t until the early 1990s that mobile phones began to evolve into devices capable of more than just voice communication.
The real shift occurred in 1992 when IBM released the Simon Personal Communicator, widely regarded as the first smartphone. It combined a mobile phone with a touchscreen, email, calendar, and even a fax machine. However, it was Apple’s launch of the iPhone in 2007 that truly redefined the smartphone. With its sleek design, capacitive touchscreen, and user-friendly interface, it set the stage for the modern smartphone era, encouraging other companies like Samsung, Google, and Huawei to create their own versions. Today, smartphones are multifaceted devices used for communication, entertainment, work, navigation, and more.
