Tragic Times in Kenya: A Call for Reflection and Change

Kenya has entered a perilous season, one marked by unprecedented tragedies that demand serious reflection and decisive action. While some may dismiss the spiritual aspect of these events, the facts remain unchanged: we are facing a dangerous and alarming trend, evidenced by the surge in road accidents and catastrophic incidents across the nation.

Road Carnage: A Grim Reality

In the past few months, road accidents have reached horrifying levels. Consider the tragic Coast Bus incident where a faulty bus, already reported by passengers and ignored by authorities, claimed 14 lives. Then there’s the devastating accident involving Jamal Mubarak, a designated driver for a new Range Rover, whose collision with a truck on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway took two lives on the spot.

Between August 1 and September 6 alone, 182 people were injured on our roads, with 79 lives lost. This tragic toll underscores a crisis of negligence, corruption, and disregard for public safety.

The Hillside Academy Tragedy: A National Wake-Up Call

Perhaps the most heart-wrenching event was the fire at Hillside Academy in Endarasha, Nyeri, which claimed the lives of 21 pupils, with 70 more unaccounted for. Parents and citizens are rightfully demanding answers from the government, which has been alarmingly vague about the missing children. The tragedy lays bare the nation's chronic issues: greed, negligence, and the prioritization of profits over lives.

The school, built of flammable materials like timber and corrugated iron sheets, lacked basic safety measures such as smoke detectors. The dormitory’s door was locked from the outside, and the night watchman was absent. Such preventable circumstances cost precious lives, raising urgent questions about safety standards and accountability in schools.

Structural and Systemic Neglect

Kenya’s schools are often constructed cheaply, ignoring safety standards in pursuit of quick profits. Measures like smoke detectors or fire-resistant materials are rare, despite their affordability. It is vital for Parliament to enforce stricter building regulations, including mandatory smoke detectors in all schools. Exploring cost-effective and fire-resistant construction methods, such as earthbag buildings, could also save lives.

A Deeper Crisis: Neglecting Our Children

This tragedy also highlights a deeper societal issue: the neglect of parental responsibility. Many parents have outsourced the upbringing and discipline of their children to schools and house helps, leaving them disconnected from their own families. The pressure to send children to boarding schools at increasingly younger ages only exacerbates this problem.

Time for Change

The Hillside Academy fire should serve as a wake-up call for Kenya. It is a tragic reminder of our collective failure to prioritize the safety and well-being of our children. Change is long overdue. We must hold those in power accountable, enforce stricter safety regulations, and reflect on our values as a society.
