The Turning Point: How the July 23rd Mandamanos Shaped Kenya’s Political Struggle

In my opinion, the Mandamanos of July 23, 2024, stand out as the most successful and impactful protests against the dictatorial regime of William Ruto. Historically, no other demonstrations have been as effective. This success is particularly surprising given the executive’s threats in the lead-up to the protests. Supporters of the regime had warned, “Enough is enough; these Mandamanos will come to an end.” Many feared this chilling rhetoric would intimidate protesters into silence.

Contrary to expectations, the demonstrations showcased strategic brilliance that turned the tide in favor of the opposition. Employing tactics as old as warfare itself, the protesters not only neutralized the government's brute force but also exposed its vulnerabilities, showing the world which side holds the upper hand. This approach saved countless lives and demonstrated that intellect can outmaneuver might.

One pivotal moment was the diversionary tactic to focus attention on Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The government deployed immense resources to secure the airport—security forces, aerial surveillance, and restricted access roads. Yet, the protesters shifted their efforts to the Central Business District (CBD) at the last moment. This unexpected move left the government unprepared, enabling peaceful protests in the CBD without violence or loss of life.

The peaceful nature of the protests was a revelation. For years, the government blamed protesters for looting and chaos. However, Tuesday’s events captured the truth on camera: hired goons, allegedly funded by the regime, were the real culprits. A local TV station, KTN, aired an expose showing these goons receiving money and fuel, leaving no doubt about their role in past violence.

This undeniable evidence has inflicted irreversible damage on the Ruto regime’s credibility. Trust, once lost, cannot be regained, and this loss signals a steep decline for the government. For a regime reliant on force, the strategic and peaceful tactics of Gen Z protesters highlight its inability to adapt to a smarter, more unpredictable opposition.

Moreover, the day’s events prioritized saving lives. Unlike previous protests marred by police brutality and casualties, this time, medical personnel stationed for emergencies reported a quiet day. The diversionary tactic not only spared lives but also showcased a new level of sophistication in planning.

As the regime struggles to respond to this new form of protest, it faces an opponent far more agile and intelligent. The youth-led movement is redefining resistance, proving that outdated tactics and brute force are no match for innovation and strategy.

This battle for Kenya’s soul is far from over, but it is becoming increasingly clear that change is inevitable. A better Kenya is within reach, and the events of July 23rd will be remembered as a turning point in the fight for justice, transparency, and democracy.
