The Truth Behind the Political Spin: Kenya’s Struggling Reality

In Kenya, many politicians and media members discuss the tough times facing ordinary citizens—hunger, starvation, and poverty. Yet, most of them truly don’t grasp the extent of the crisis. Let me share why. Recently, headlines erupted about Raila Odinga allegedly losing his African Union (AU) job overseeing infrastructure projects. Following this, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made statements claiming that Raila’s loss of this position was due to his political protests against the government. He implied that Raila was now "jobless," but let’s take a closer look.

First, it’s important to note that Raila’s position at the AU was not a typical salaried job. It wasn’t an office with a salary; it was a role in an African infrastructure initiative, akin to a brand ambassador job—more honorary than anything else. Now, assuming Raila had lost this position, does he really need a job to survive? Of course not. Raila Odinga is an institution; even without money, he could live comfortably. His wealth and status are testament to his legacy.

It’s disheartening that in a country where unemployment is a massive issue, the Deputy President would focus on Raila’s non-job loss, instead of addressing the real concerns affecting millions of struggling Kenyans. And let’s not forget, it’s the job of the press to critique the government, as enshrined in the constitution. Threatening journalists, as the Deputy President recently did, shows that Kenya is heading down a dangerous path.

The truth is, the government’s refusal to address the people’s demands—basic needs like food, fuel, and fair elections—is fueling public discontent. In the midst of all this, Raila’s protests are gaining momentum, and the government’s stubbornness is only making things worse.

Meanwhile, it’s clear that Kenyans are tired. They want real change. The crisis is undeniable, and the urgency is growing. This is a critical time in Kenya’s history, and the direction we choose now will determine the future of the nation. Let’s not ignore the reality of the situation.
