The Political Showdown: Inside Natembeya's Battle with Wetangula

The Political Showdown: Inside Natembeya's Battle with Wetangula

One thing you can be sure about in politics is that everything is connected and currently there are two controversies that are dictating what political analyst are looking at and I'm sure many of us are already aware of those two hot potatoes in Kenyan politics.

Currently Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has taken on Bukusu/Ford Kenya kingpin, Moses Wetangula with his brand new clarion call which is threatening to become a movement called Tawe, which is Luhya for NO!

NADCO scare in court injunctions

And then the second is that somebody has gone to court and successfully stopped the opening of the servers as scheduled by the NADCO agreement.

And of course the response from Azimio has been immediate because Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa have told Kenyans the opposition is going back to the streets and Maandamanos are coming back with the vengeance.

Please don't forget even as we proceed, hang on very dearly to that basic principle that everything is connected. Of course it will become clearer as we proceed with this article.

Now most Kenyans are in the dark about George Natembeya’s background and where he really came from to enter Kenyan politics so suddenly. It is very dangerous and indeed reckless to attempt to analyze any politician without first of all looking into their background and understanding their history. So that you clearly know where they're coming from. This of course also informs you on their character and the possibility of them selling out to the other side.

George Natembeya links to John Michuki

George Natembeya got his start as the personal assistant to the then Internal Security minister John Michuki. He then went on to make his mark as the administrator of the government most responsible for the highest number of evictions from the Mau Forest.

Most Kenyans remember the Mau Forest controversy. This is a very key water tower in the country called Kenya that was invaded by settlers mostly from the Rift Valley. And you will also remember that most politicians and prominent individuals from Western Kenya at the time were treading very carefully over the Mau Forest evictions for obvious reasons. Western Kenya are neighbors to the rift valley and therefore politicians were terrified of upsetting their neighbors, some of whom are voters in their own constituencies in Western Kenya. Even civil servants were terrified.

But Natembeya seemed to be very courageous and did not fear anything or any consequences. Indeed he went about the Mau evictions with vigour.

And here is yet another piece of very important relevant instructive information. George Natembeya is the blue eyed boy of former president Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta. The political reality is that you don't climb up the ranks so quickly without a powerful political Godfather in Kenya.

Uhuru Kenyatta is still a very powerful politician and I believe this was confirmed recently when Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua shocked everybody by doing something UDA and Kenya Kwanza never do. And that is humbling himself and appealing for forgiveness from former first lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta for all the political dirt and harassment UDA threw in her direction.

I trust that we all understand that it is highly unlikely that Bwana Gachagua woke up one morning feeling very repentant and decided to repent and ask for forgiveness from Mama Ngina Kenyatta.

My point is that Uhuru Kenyatta with the backing of the Kenyatta family is still a politician who cannot be ignored, even though he is a retired President.

It is also true that the man who is on the cross hairs of Governor Natembeya currently is Moses Wetangula. Wetangula also has his own very serious issues with the Ruto regime. And most of these issues stem from the fact that Wetangula has stubbornly rejected the Ruto proposal to fold up his Ford Kenya to join a stronger united UDA party that will have swallowed all affiliate Kenya Kwanza parties in preparation for the 2027 General elections. It is for this reason that one would be forgiven for suspecting that Natembeya is being used by Ruto to finish Wetangula politically ro pave way for a smooth take-over of Ford Kenya by UDA.

Natembeya will dethrone Wetangula: Analysts

And by the way it is the view of most analysts that Natembeya will ultimately succeed in dethroning Wetangula as the Bukusu kingpin.

Actually Natembeya’s lastest move is once again very bad news for UDA. Because Ruto’s key strategy for re-election in 2027 hinges on two communities, namely the Somali and the Luhya. Natembeya’s politics with Wetangula definitely disrupts Ruto’s careful plans.

Most Kenyans, including analysts, have not been able to note a very important aspect in Natembeya. And that is the fact that he has always been very strategic. After being elected he has remained silent, so much so that some speculated that he was leaning towards joining the UDA and Ruto camp. With this knowledge it becomes difficult to sustain the hypothesis that Natembeya is being used by Ruto.

The timing of timing of Natembea’s onslaught against Wetangula and his launching of the Tawe narrative are actually perfect right upto the milliseconds. As we established earlier in this article, everything is connected and the timing here is perfect at a time when UDA and Ruto are finding it increasingly difficult to do anything political in the Mulembe nation.

This in turn explains why the UDA party elections have been postponed several times and now it is looking more and more unlikely that they will ever take place. The simple reason is that as long as the two key regions for UDA in 2027 are not in the bag, then it makes zero sense to hold national party elections.

The other connected factor is the Mzungu factor (in the Mulembe nation they say, the Vaasungu factor). This has emerged as one of the biggest headaches in the Ruto regime.

Let me put it in the following way; if you were brought into Power with a lot of help and support from people whose power and influence is now waning on the world stage, wouldn’t you be concerned?

The last very important point to always remember in the Natembeya/Wetangula saga is the fact that the Bukusu are the largest (by far) sub-tribe within the Luhya tribe. And the Bukusu populate a lot of Trans Nzoia and indeed a lot of Western Kenya. In terms of numbers they are followed by the Maragoli.

What this simply means is that any political strategy somebody may want to target at the Mulembe nation must start with the Bukusu to succeed. And this explains why Ruto’s strategy in Western kenya since 2013 has always focused on the Bukusu.

Ruto's tax policy political problems versus his personal tax paying record before he became president

Ruto's tax policy political problems versus his personal tax paying record before he became president

Of all the troubles and threats President William Ruto's administration faces, the worst nightmare are taxes and the political backlash it continues to relentlessly unleash on him and his administration.

Just to give an example; Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has had any remaining semblance of support in the Mount Kenya region completely wiped out. Gachagua’s predicament is Section 23 A of the Finance Act, 2023, which introduced the Electronic Tax Invoice Management System (E-TIMS). This has proven to be a major issue for many small-scale traders and farmers in Central Kenya, particularly those growing avocados.

Ruto's tax policies have raised the cost of living for Kenyans to unbearable heights, and yet this is but the beginning of the expected impact on Kenyans.

This has led many analysts to believe that it is no longer a question of if Ruto's regime will fall but when.

And yet the intricacies of Ruto's tax issues before he became president are even more interesting especially because they have always been shrouded in secrecy.

There has been plenty of whispers over the years of undeclared assets, questionable business dealings, and potential tax evasion, amongst other tax-related issues.

The truth is that William Ruto has a long and complex history with tax authorities. His financial affairs have often been under the microscope, scrutinized by both the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the public eye. Over the years, Ruto's wealth has grown exponentially, with his numerous investments in sectors such as real estate, agriculture, and hospitality contributing to his massive fortune.

However, as his wealth increased, so did the tax controversies associated with him. The KRA has repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of his wealth accumulation and the taxes paid on these assets. Despite Ruto's insistence that his wealth is a result of hard work and smart investment choices, suspicions regarding his tax compliance persisted until the day he became president.

These suspicions were not without basis. There have been instances where the tax authorities have found discrepancies in Ruto's tax declarations, leading to investigations and audits. These occurrences have served to fuel the public's curiosity and skepticism about the President's financial dealings.

While it is not unusual for a public figure to have multiple sources of income, the sheer size of Ruto's wealth has led to questions about its legitimacy and the taxes paid on it.

Secondly, there have been allegations of Ruto using his political influence over the years, to evade taxes. These allegations, while unproven, have served to tarnish his public image and increase scrutiny on his financial affairs.

Lastly, his inconsistent tax declarations have added to fuel to the fire. In several instances, the assets declared by Ruto did not match the records held by the KRA. These inconsistencies, whether due to oversight or intentional misrepresentation, have just made things worse for those who may have wanted to clear his name.

In addition to this, there have been allegations of Ruto acquiring land illegally, further muddying the waters. The most notable of these allegations is the case involving the acquisition of a piece of land in the infamous Muteshi saga. The case, which was in the courts for over a decade, raised serious questions about Ruto's ethics and integrity.

Furthermore, there have been concerns about the transparency of his wealth declaration. The public has often been left in the dark about the extent of his wealth, leading to speculation and suspicion. This lack of transparency has undoubtedly contributed to the controversies surrounding his wealth and assets.
