Peter Karanji, a key figure linked to the table Manenos, has a very intriguing background. While many rumors have surrounded him, especially in connection with the table, for this show, we’ll focus on the facts. As of the time of this recording, Karanji has not been formally charged, and it's uncertain whether he will be. He's merely a suspect. However, details about his connection to Sarah Wairimu, the widow of the late Tob Cohen, have been released by investigators, even though a gag order is in place. What's especially interesting is Karanji's past. Before venturing into politics, he worked as a humble taxi driver in Nakuru, based at the Lake Nakuru Lodge.
Though being a taxi driver might seem unremarkable, it's a profession that can provide valuable connections, which Karanji seems to have made good use of. By 2006, he was part of the campaign team for President Mwai Kibaki in the contentious 2007 elections, specifically in the Gilgil and Nakuru areas. Those who knew him then say his life changed dramatically after joining the political scene. During that time, he met Mata Hari, a young university graduate, and they would later marry.
In 2011, after a significant event in the political landscape, the couple's lives took a more high-profile turn. That year, the political party UDM was launched, with prominent figures like William Ruto, then an MP, supporting it. Although Ruto didn’t join the party, he stated it was his preferred vehicle for the 2013 elections. Karanji played a role in launching UDM, which marked a clear indication that, by then, he was rubbing shoulders with influential figures in Kenya's political circles.
What’s also fascinating about UDM is its mysterious origins—its main financiers and the motivations behind its formation remain unclear. Even now, the party leader is listed as Philip Morgan, a lawyer with ties to prominent figures, raising more questions about its true backers.
As for Karanji's relationship with Sarah Wairimu, they claim to be close friends or business associates, but the circumstances of their interactions suggest something deeper. For instance, after a meeting, he drove all the way back to Nakuru, only to turn around and return to Nairobi at her request late at night. This type of commitment seems unusual for mere business associates.
