In any administration, there are those with big titles and visible roles, and then there are the unseen power players who actually run things behind the scenes. In Kenya’s current political landscape, two figures stand out as the true sources of power in President Ruto's government. These individuals, who were never elected but appointed, have shaped the direction of the administration without much public recognition: Felix Koskei, the Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of the Civil Service, and Faruk Ket, Ruto's trusted personal assistant for many years.
Koskei's journey began in President Uhuru Kenyatta's first cabinet in 2013, where he served as the Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries. His tenure was marred by controversy, including accusations of corruption and illegal land deals, leading to his departure under a cloud. However, after being cleared, he faded from the limelight until 2022, when Ruto appointed him to his current position. Despite his official role, Koskei now operates with far more influence, even overseeing development projects, while cabinet members and other high-ranking officials consult him for guidance.
On the other hand, Faruk Ket has earned the nickname "Ruto's Mr. Fix-it" due to his ability to solve a wide range of problems, from the trivial to the most significant. Faruk’s relationship with Ruto, which began in 1997 during Ruto's bid for Eldoret North, was initially marked by animosity, but eventually developed into a close, unbreakable partnership. Over the years, Faruk has proven to be a powerful, albeit controversial figure, with a reputation for decisiveness and aggression. His presence and influence in Ruto’s administration are undeniable, to the point that even the Deputy President and Cabinet Secretaries must seek his approval before making decisions. His power is so great that he can even override Ruto’s decisions in certain situations.
Faruk’s role goes beyond the public eye. He is deeply involved in the strategic workings of the government, ensuring Ruto’s interests are protected at all costs. However, his controversial reputation, marked by involvement in major scandals, such as the Jacob Juma assassination and witness interference in Ruto's ICJ cases, only adds to the intrigue surrounding him.
These two men, Felix Koskei and Faruk Ket, may not hold the most visible titles, but their power in shaping Kenya’s politics is unquestionable. As key decision-makers in Ruto’s administration, their influence continues to shape the direction of the country, for better or worse.
