The Chaos of November 17, 2017: A Day of Political Tension and Violence

November 17, 2017, was a day marked by chaos, fear, and unprecedented political events in Kenya. While much of what transpired is documented in videos, many dark and underhanded activities went unrecorded. The government's firm denial of using live bullets is contradicted by footage and eyewitness accounts, leaving the public questioning the truth.

Government Denials and Contradictions

The government insists that only water cannons, batons, and tear gas were used during the confrontations. Yet, numerous videos show otherwise. In some, live bullets are visibly fired, and people are seen collapsing after being shot. Global news outlets like CNN and Al Jazeera have aired these clips, contradicting the government’s claims.

One particularly chilling video shows a person writhing in pain, allegedly shot in the leg, being placed atop a vehicle stuck in traffic. These incidents recall past denials from authorities, such as the tragic shooting of a young girl in Mathare during a previous protest. The police claimed she was shot by "persons unknown," a narrative now echoing in this situation.

Heightened Security for Raila Odinga

The elaborate security measures for Raila Odinga on this day were unprecedented. His convoy included multiple security vehicles, and Odinga himself wore a bulletproof vest. This raised questions: why such intense precautions for what appeared to be a routine event?

As his convoy moved through Nairobi, a blockade on Mombasa Road forced the entourage onto Jogoo Road. It was there that violence erupted. A mysterious civilian militia emerged, targeting NASA supporters, while the police simultaneously confronted them with tear gas, water cannons, and bullets.

An Orchestrated Attack on Raila’s Vehicle

Amid the chaos, Odinga’s car became a specific target. Positioned between two security vehicles, it was clearly identifiable. Despite being a fully armored Range Rover, its windshield was shattered—an alarming indication of the force used. Photographs of the damaged vehicle quickly circulated, fueling speculation about the attack's deliberate nature.

The Heroism of NASA Supporters

Perhaps the most heart-wrenching moment came when NASA supporters formed a human shield around Raila’s vehicle, using their own bodies to protect their leader. This act of selflessness brought tears to many and underscored the loyalty and love his supporters have for him. Tragically, it is possible that some of those who were shot were among the brave individuals shielding the vehicle.

A Nation in Desperation

The events of November 17 reflect a nation teetering on the edge of desperation. The Jubilee government’s actions suggest a sense of urgency and fear, pushing them to dangerous extremes. Desperation is a perilous state for any government, often leading to decisions that escalate tensions rather than resolve them.

Conclusion: A Call for Hope and Resilience

As Kenyans grapple with these troubling events, it is crucial to hold onto hope. No matter how dark the night, morning will come. Let us pray for the nation’s peace and unity as we navigate these uncertain times.
