The Cancellation of Raila Odinga's Parallel Jamhuri Day Rally: A Closer Look at Patterns and Politics

The cancellation of Raila Odinga’s much-anticipated parallel Jamhuri Day rally at Jacaranda Grounds on December 12 has stirred widespread speculation and allegations. This rally, meant to contrast the official celebrations led by President Ruto, was expected to draw massive crowds. Many Azimio supporters were disappointed, as they saw it as a chance to showcase their leader's popularity, especially after the low attendance at Ruto's Mashujaa Day celebrations in October.

This sudden postponement adds to a pattern of similar cancellations by Azimio in recent months. The first major rally post-election, held at Kamukunji Grounds, was also postponed last minute. When analyzing such cancellations, a clear and concerning pattern emerges — one that hints at the possible influence of external forces or hidden agendas at play.

To understand the broader context, we must examine the role of international politics in Kenya. Historical precedents, such as foreign powers influencing Kenya’s leadership during the colonial and early independence periods, suggest that such interference is not new. From the release and rise of Jomo Kenyatta to the tragic assassination of Tom Mboya, external forces have long played a subtle yet significant role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape.

Fast forward to today, foreign alerts and advisories during key political moments — such as the August 2022 elections and the Supreme Court ruling on the presidential results — seem to suggest foreknowledge of unfolding events. The cancellation of Azimio’s rally, amid rumors of foreign involvement, raises questions about the interplay of international and domestic politics.

While official reasons for the rally’s postponement point to scheduling conflicts, deeper analysis of the recurring patterns and historical context paints a more complex picture. Could foreign powers be influencing Kenya’s political direction? If so, what is their agenda? And how might these patterns shape the country’s political future?

As Kenyans, it is vital to remain vigilant, critical, and informed. Politics is rarely what it seems, and history reminds us that the forces behind the scenes often shape outcomes far more than those in the spotlight.
