Kenyans have been left reeling from the sudden death of lawyer Paul Gicheru, who was facing an ongoing case at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, with a judgment due soon. On this program, I delve deep to address the burning questions: What does this development mean? Is it connected to politics, particularly Kenya’s current political climate? Stay tuned to uncover surprising information you may not have encountered before, including a possible link to the recent Supreme Court ruling on Kenya's presidential petition. Now, let’s unravel what transpired. On September 26, 2022, the day began ordinarily at Paul Gicheru’s home. After a late lunch, he complained of feeling unwell and went to rest in his bedroom. Tragically, he never woke up. Around 7 PM, concerned family members found him lifeless with foam around his mouth. At the same time, his son fell seriously ill and was hospitalized, though reportedly in stable condition. These events have left many Kenyans wondering: What really happened?
At just 52 years old, Gicheru was not in an age bracket typically associated with sudden death. The case becomes even more perplexing due to his history with the ICC, where he was accused of tampering with witnesses in the high-profile case involving President William Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang. The ICC prosecution alleged that Gicheru paid witnesses to recant their testimony, with detailed evidence including names, amounts, and locations. This led to an arrest warrant against him, which Gicheru unexpectedly chose to honor in November 2020, surrendering to The Hague despite a Kenyan court order protecting him.
Gicheru’s surrender raised eyebrows, with many speculating it was part of a larger strategy. Observers suspected an undisclosed plea bargain might be in play, as such deals often lead to lighter sentences in exchange for testimony against accomplices. If this were true, it placed Gicheru in a precarious position, particularly given the high-stakes nature of ICC cases linked to powerful figures.
The ICC’s handling of Kenyan cases has historically been fraught with challenges—witness intimidation, tampering, and even alleged hacking into confidential systems. These issues have made Kenyan cases particularly difficult to prosecute. Gicheru’s case also intersected with Kenya’s volatile political climate, as his testimony could have implications for President Ruto, who was among those implicated in the 2008 post-election violence.
The timing of Gicheru’s death has fueled speculation. Some suggest it may be linked to the political fallout following Kenya’s Supreme Court ruling on the presidential petition. Others point to the inherent dangers faced by individuals involved in sensitive ICC cases. Three possibilities emerge: natural causes brought on by stress, foul play by political adversaries, or elimination to protect sensitive information linked to ICC proceedings.
In an upcoming video, I’ll explore the broader pattern of mysterious deaths connected to Kenya’s ICC cases, from prominent figures like the late Meshack Yebei to less obvious ones such as Mutula Kilonzo Sr. These cases raise questions about the lengths to which some may go to influence justice.
As we await more clarity, I extend my condolences to Paul Gicheru’s family and others affected by these cases. One day, the full truth will emerge, as truth has a way of defying suppression.
