After the Supreme Court ruling that declared the election a sham, things seemed to quiet down politically, which left many people wondering what was really going on behind the scenes. While it appeared that everything had come to a halt, the truth is that a lot was happening behind the scenes. Over the next few days, I will attempt to reveal some of what was unfolding. But let’s start with a curious meeting that raised a lot of questions.
Before the Supreme Court ruling, there was a highly publicized meeting between President Uhuru Kenyatta and retired President Daniel arap Moi. This meeting raised eyebrows across the country, and rumors quickly spread. Why would the president meet Moi and make it public? Kenyans sensed something was afoot, and they were right—there was definitely something brewing.
What stands out about the meeting is that the president and Moi could easily have had a private conversation without any fanfare, yet they chose to make this one public. This leads us to ask: whose benefit was this meeting for? It appears that the publicized meeting was for the benefit of Deputy President William Ruto’s faction within Jubilee. This strategic meeting, much like one earlier this year between Moi and Mama Ngina Kenyatta, was meant to send a message.
In that January meeting, it was announced that Jubilee would work closely with the Kanu party, signaling a shift in alliances. This intensified the rivalry between Gideon Moi and DP Ruto, with even public altercations taking place. Many assumed that the fallout between Ruto and the Kenyatta family was just rumors, but the public dynamics between them continued to suggest otherwise.
The most recent meeting between President Kenyatta and Moi is a clear indication of a rift within Jubilee. This meeting was not for the benefit of the opposition, but rather to signal to Ruto’s camp that if they no longer wanted to work with the Kenyatta family, there was another strong political ally in the form of Kanu. This is not just a subtle message, it’s almost a political threat: "If you cannot work with us, we have alternatives."
When we tie this to the reports of Ruto being treated poorly at State House and the rumors circulating about tensions, it’s clear that the relationship between the President and his Deputy is in trouble. While this situation is not surprising, given Kenya’s political history, it marks a turning point for Jubilee. It was always predicted that the relationship between Kenyatta and Ruto would eventually fracture, and now we are seeing the early signs of that division.
The big question now is whether Jubilee still sees any value in Ruto. As President Kenyatta’s term nears its end, there seems to be growing tension within Jubilee, and Ruto’s role is now under scrutiny. Although the public appearances may mask the true nature of their relationship, the internal struggles within Jubilee are very real and could have significant consequences in the coming days.
While all eyes are on NASA and their upcoming strategies, it is equally important to monitor the situation within Jubilee. The political maneuvering and internal conflicts in the ruling party are just as critical to understand. If there are serious cracks in the Jubilee foundation, it will be difficult for them to maintain control and present a united front moving forward.
So, while we wait for the political drama to unfold, one thing is certain: Jubilee has its work cut out for it in trying to keep the party together and maintain its grip on power. The meeting between Moi and Kenyatta is a clear signal that all is not well within the ruling party, and it is something to watch closely. As usual, I will be keeping a close eye on these developments and updating you accordingly.
