When Raila Odinga and Azimio's maandamano started, President William Ruto and his hardliners must have been cocksure that they were going to deal with this "thorn in the flesh" for the UDA regime very quickly and very efficiently. And they had an ingenious, albeit evil plan.
Today this oft repeated claim from Ruto himself and parroted by every single supporter rings increasingly hollow and now sounds very exhausted and very defeated, even to some in audiences outside the country.
The main reason for this is that there is way too much evidence to prove that this UDA mantra claim is not factual.
The same evidence also conclusively proves that this false mantra was precisely what the government strategy has been all along to stop the legal protests. For instance, I'm sure you have seen many clips online of people roaming around during demonstrations, who are in fact not demonstrators. And these cocky characters have "police in plain clothes" written all over them. They roam the streets causing all kinds of damage, injury to people, looting and even death to Kenyans.

Looking back I think even I would have been initially convinced that this plan would have worked like a charm. Because all one would have to do is to link the violence and the damage to property to Azimio and the maandamano and it would have been mission accomplished.
And once that had been achieved, nobody would have lifted a finger if the government used strong arm tactics to crush the opposition and bring the maandamano to a screeching halt.
But one of the things that went wrong is that this person who tabled and promoted it to UDA must be still living in the 1990s. It could be some old man stuck in time in the past.
And I'll tell you why. You see in the 1990s when the Daniel Toroitich regime was harassing protestors, there was no social media. It did NOT exist. People didn't carry cameras around all the time, like they do today.
Everybody these days has a camera and I'm talking about the camera on the phone that is always with you everywhere you go and very handy for quickly capturing anything you come across. And so the plan has backfired so badly because this evil plan to end maandamano has been captured in video clips across the country.
And now it seems that Raila Odinga has decided to focus (with laser precision) on that area that has failed so dramatically for the UDA and Kenya Kwanza government. That area of violence and brutality towards ordinary citizens and that is what the vigils are all about. As well as the visits to hospitals to condole with the victims of police brutality.
Indeed even the motion introduced on the floor of parliament recently to debate the brutality of the police by ODM legislators was designed to keep this "strategic mistake" of Ruto at the top of the daily news cycle. Because opposition legislators would have been the first to have realized that with the superior Kenya Kwanza numbers in the house the debate and the bill would end up achieving zilch. Which is exactly what ended up happening. But clearly the reason it was tabled by legislator Rose Buyu was to score points outside the August house, which it has.
The whole idea here is that all these things are keeping this narrative of police brutality at the top of our news daily. And so far this has continued for days on end. Definitely you can tell that this is not good for the government because even the International Community is now beginning to pay attention and the sympathy has shifted dramatically in great favour to the opposition.
