Unmasking the 2022 Kenyan Presidential Election Controversy

Immediately after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati announced William Samoei Ruto as President-elect, the Deputy President sprang into action. He began receiving defectors from the Azimio coalition, engaging in high-profile meetings, and issuing statements. However, this flurry of activity was suddenly replaced by an eerie silence—no further activity or remarks from the President-elect.

So, what caused this abrupt pause?

For those unfamiliar with recent events in Kenya, the game-changer was the "Githongo Dossier," a sworn affidavit by renowned anti-corruption whistleblower John Githongo. This explosive document revealed allegations of massive electoral fraud. According to the dossier, insiders working on the IEBC system allegedly altered Forms 34A before uploading them to the IEBC servers.

John Githongo, with his impeccable reputation for integrity, was the perfect figure to deliver such a bombshell. Known for prioritizing truth over personal gain, his credibility made it nearly impossible for critics to dismiss the dossier without proper interrogation. While some attacked it with dismissive remarks like "nonsense" or "rubbish," none have provided solid evidence to counter its claims.

Mounting Evidence of Fraud

Before the dossier, suspicions had already been raised by Mount Kenya politicians and analysts, who pointed out discrepancies in voter turnout and tallying processes. For instance, the IEBC initially reported that 12 million Kenyans had voted by 4 PM on August 9, only to later claim the number had jumped to over 14 million by the close of polls an hour later.

Despite these anomalies, many dismissed the claims as sour grapes—until the Githongo Dossier. The affidavit not only corroborated earlier concerns but also exposed the depths of the fraud allegedly perpetrated against Kenyans. Evidence of manipulated results—where Raila Odinga’s votes were allegedly swapped with Ruto’s—surfaced, sparking widespread outrage among Kenyans seeking the truth.

One particularly egregious example was cited from a polling station where Odinga was initially recorded as having 60 votes, while Ruto had 1. However, the results were allegedly switched, giving Ruto 60 votes and leaving Odinga with just one.

Perception vs. Reality

The controversy brings into focus the power of perception. Just as con artists rely on appearances to deceive, fraudulent elections thrive on creating an illusion of legitimacy. Critics argue that Ruto’s campaign cultivated an image of overwhelming popularity, even as genuine voter turnout and public support suggested otherwise.

This perception was starkly evident in the final campaign rallies. While Azimio drew massive crowds, photographs from Ruto’s rallies—authentic ones, not doctored—told a different story. The disparity fueled doubts about the legitimacy of the announced results.

The Silence of the President-Elect

The sudden silence from the President-elect is telling. With mounting evidence and growing public scrutiny, even staunch UDA supporters struggle to defend the election outcome convincingly. Attempts to discredit the dossier have largely fallen flat, as its detailed, verifiable claims expose the scale of the alleged fraud.

The Real Victims

While many view the controversy as a battle between Ruto and Raila, the true victims are the Kenyan people. Millions who exercised their democratic right were allegedly robbed of their voice. Some traveled great distances, spent hard-earned money, and stood in long lines, only to have their votes disregarded.

A Call for Justice

As the Supreme Court deliberates on this matter, Kenyans await justice. The hope is that the court will correct the alleged wrongs and restore the true will of the people. The case underscores the importance of integrity and accountability in safeguarding democracy.

John Githongo’s revelations have set the stage for unprecedented legal and political drama. With more evidence expected to emerge, Kenyans brace for a decisive moment that could redefine the nation’s electoral processes and democratic values.

Final Thoughts

This unfolding saga is not just about who becomes Kenya’s president—it’s about the sanctity of democracy and the collective voice of the people. The coming days will determine whether the truth prevails or whether perception continues to overshadow reality.
