Propaganda works—and it works on all of us. When something is repeated enough times, even if it initially seems implausible, it can begin to influence our beliefs if we're not vigilant. Currently, Kenya is witnessing a significant surge in fake news and propaganda, a clear sign of panic and desperation among certain political factions. This escalation signals a season of chaos, reminiscent of past turbulent periods in the country's history.
A recent example is former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s remarks at a Catholic Church event, which have been widely misinterpreted. While his speech emphasized the importance of servant leadership and criticized betrayal in leadership, some propaganda narratives suggested his comments were aimed at Raila Odinga's bid for an African Union position. This misinformation opened the floodgates for renewed political attacks and counter-narratives.
For context, this is not the first time such tactics have been deployed. In the lead-up to the 2022 elections, similar propaganda targeted Kenyatta and Odinga, claiming plans for Uhuru to extend his presidency through a puppet administration. Despite its absurdity, the narrative gained traction and influenced public opinion.
What’s notable is how these strategies have persisted. For example, recent remarks by Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah appeared to amplify these misinterpretations, strategically made in Nyeri, a key region in Mount Kenya politics. This reveals an ongoing effort to shape narratives in a region critical to political alignments.
Meanwhile, Uhuru Kenyatta remains consistent in his strategy, focusing on rebuilding his influence in Mount Kenya to bolster the Jubilee Party. In contrast, the Kenya Kwanza leadership appears inconsistent—one moment apologizing to the Kenyatta family, and the next launching fresh attacks. This lack of coherence raises questions about their strategy.
The unfolding events underscore how political positioning and propaganda are shaping Kenya’s future. As politicians realign and jostle for power, the stakes are higher than ever. This chaotic season reflects a nation at a political crossroads, with critical decisions on the horizon.
