The countrywide power outage that hit Kenya on Friday night remains shrouded in mystery, with many questions being raised but no clear answers provided. What is even more fascinating, though hardly surprising, is the government's typical knee-jerk reaction—focused on cosmetic measures rather than solving the core issue. It is puzzling that while some individuals have lost their jobs, others, who are equally responsible, have remained in their positions. For instance, why fire the Kenya Airports Authority boss while leaving the CS for Energy and the Managing Director of Kenya Power and Lighting Company in office? This selective accountability raises more questions.
To make matters worse, some conspiracy theories suggest the power outage was deliberately orchestrated to carry out actions that could only happen when the entire country was without power. While we do not deal with conspiracy theories, it is important to examine the facts presented by the government.
Officially, the power outage was blamed on a malfunction at the Lake Turkana Wind Power Station. However, this explanation has been disputed. Let’s consider two crucial points to better understand the situation. First, Lake Turkana accounts for less than 15% of the power on the national grid—this is a relatively small contribution. Second, if the Lake Turkana station were indeed the cause of the outage, once the issue was resolved, power should have been quickly restored, which did not happen. The government’s credibility is already in question due to a history of misleading statements, and this case seems to follow a similar pattern.
The government claims that the failure of Lake Turkana's wind generation system caused the grid to collapse, affecting power distribution across the country. However, we must remember that power delivery involves a complex system of transmission, stepping up and stepping down voltage over long distances, and this breakdown was much broader than a single wind farm. Additionally, the Ugandan power line, which often supplements Kenya’s grid, was also unavailable, further complicating the restoration process.
Here’s where my theory comes into play: What if someone deliberately triggered this power outage to last for a specific duration, and when they attempted to restore power using the Ugandan line, it was not functioning as expected? This scenario could explain why the outage lasted so long, as there was no backup power to revive the system promptly.
Such prolonged blackouts are not just inconveniences—they have serious consequences. For instance, hospitals with critical care units depend on stable electricity from the grid, and when the outage extends for hours, it could lead to the loss of lives or damage to equipment, as was the case during this 20-hour-plus power failure.
All this leads to the disturbing possibility that the failure of Kenya's national grid was not an accident, but rather a calculated move by insiders. Why would anyone deliberately cause such a disruption? The motive behind this remains unclear and is still a mystery. However, in the season of judgment, secrets tend to surface dramatically, and I believe the truth will come to light soon.
