As we've mentioned multiple times on this channel, one of the biggest issues facing Kenya today is the presidency's tendency to act as an expert on every topic. The latest example of this is President William Samoei Ruto’s claim that the predicted El Niño rains will not occur in Kenya as expected. Instead, he suggests that the country will experience the usual short rains of October, November, and December, which will supposedly help farmers have a bumper harvest, reduce food prices, and ensure food security for the country in the new year.
While there is nothing inherently wrong with this statement, it contradicts the predictions made by both local and international climate experts. Furthermore, it goes against the predictions of some spiritual leaders who have also spoken on the matter. Ruto’s remarks even conflict with what is already happening in parts of the country—such as Garissa, where rains are already exceeding the normal levels.
This is a significant problem. Beyond the many other issues facing the nation, the president's tendency to declare expertise on matters beyond his scope can lead to disastrous consequences. When the leader of the country speaks without fully understanding the facts, it undermines national preparedness for potential natural disasters. Experts have recently adjusted their predictions, extending the possibility of El Niño rains and floods into February 2024, which means there is still plenty of time for this phenomenon to unfold.
Some critics suggest that Ruto's remarks may have been a reaction to opposition leader Raila Odinga’s recent statements about the demolition of Moco houses, which allegedly came from the State House. If Ruto's comments were motivated by petty politics, it would be a dangerous and emotional response from a head of state, especially since this kind of behavior has been observed before.
One activist, Benjino, recently emphasized that the president should not be petty or engage in retaliatory politics. Instead, the focus should be on serving the nation. Interestingly, Benjino, who was once a strong supporter of Ruto, has now taken a 180-degree turn, revealing the growing frustration with the president’s actions. A leader too preoccupied with petty reactions, especially at the highest level, becomes a danger to the nation.
Ultimately, we must wait to see whether Ruto’s predictions about the weather will hold true, or whether the El Niño events will materialize as experts expect. However, regardless of the outcome, the president’s unmeasured words have raised serious concerns.
On another note, I’d like to announce some exciting updates for our YouTube channel. Over the past 10 years, the Kucha Chris channel has evolved, and I’ve realized that we must expand our coverage to address the critical developments shaping our nation. Kenya is going through a pivotal moment in its history, and it’s important to provide in-depth analysis amidst the clickbait headlines dominating the internet. From today, I’m committed to delivering more videos and wider coverage, even with the challenges we face. Your continued support will make all the difference as we aim for a better Kenya.
