In the early hours of February 16, 2024, Busia Governor Okia Omata was involved in a road accident in Kumo County, near the Ojola area on the Kumo-Busia highway. Thankfully, the Senator escaped unhurt, but the incident has sparked concern and speculation among Kenyans. This is particularly significant given Senator Omata's recent claims that his life was in danger due to his outspoken opposition to controversial government policies, such as the Finance Bill 2023.
The accident reportedly occurred when a tanker lost control and collided with Omata's car, pushing it off the road. However, the circumstances surrounding the accident have raised questions. Observers noted that the accident took place on an uphill stretch of road, making it unusual for a heavy vehicle to lose control at a slower, climbing speed. Police, on the other hand, reported that the truck stalled while ascending the steep incline, rolled back, and struck the Senator's vehicle. The discrepancy in accounts has only deepened public suspicion.
Another aspect of the incident that caught Kenyans' attention was the vehicle the Senator was traveling in—a Nissan Advan, one of the most affordable cars on the Kenyan market, priced between KSh 600,000 and KSh 900,000. This choice starkly contrasts with the high-end SUVs, like V8s, commonly used by many Kenyan politicians. Omata’s use of a modest car aligns with his image as a humble leader advocating for responsible government spending. His stance has earned him admiration from many Kenyans, though some argue that such vehicles may compromise his safety compared to sturdier alternatives.
Despite these debates, some argue that safety on Kenyan roads has less to do with vehicle type and more with road conditions and driving habits. Larger, faster vehicles can result in more severe accidents, and some believe divine providence plays a role in such matters.
The larger message here, according to critics, is the need for a shift in government vehicle policies. In a struggling economy, public officials should opt for cost-effective cars like the Nissan Advan or Wingroad, reflecting the nation’s financial reality. Many feel that luxury vehicles should be a personal expense rather than a burden on taxpayers.
While the incident involving Senator Omata has fueled conspiracy theories, it remains unlikely that any thorough investigation will be conducted. For now, supporters are urged to keep him in their prayers, given his dedication to championing the interests of ordinary Kenyans.
