Lessons From the Past: Unveiling the Mysteries of Kenya’s Political Landscape

Kenya’s journey toward the 2022 presidential elections raised a perplexing question: why did voters show minimal interest in seeking detailed information about the leading candidates? Considering the profound impact a president has on the nation, it seems logical to know as much as possible about them.

One candidate, in particular, has an intriguing backstory. William Samoei Ruto first entered Kenya's political limelight in 1992, a mere 31 years ago, and has since risen to the presidency without losing a single election. This rapid ascent is remarkable and raises questions about his political strategy and influence. Despite warnings from figures like former President Uhuru Kenyatta and trade unionist Francis Atwoli, many Kenyans overlooked cautionary signals.

Now, another warning has emerged, this time from Roselyn Akombe, a former IEBC commissioner. Her cryptic message urging Kenyans to "get ready" has sparked debate, particularly in the context of proposals to extend the presidential term from five to seven years. Akombe’s unique position during the 2017 elections and her knowledge of the events surrounding the brutal murder of former IEBC ICT manager Chris Msando lend weight to her statements.

Akombe’s insights highlight the intricate connections between the IEBC, key political players, and the 2017 Jubilee re-election campaign, led by none other than Ruto. These events not only shaped her perspective but also demonstrated Ruto’s political craftiness, even during his fallout with Kenyatta. For instance, Ruto’s reported influence over the appointment of former DPP Noordin Haji underscores his behind-the-scenes power.

As Kenya faces discussions about constitutional amendments to extend the presidential term, Akombe’s warnings cannot be ignored. The idea of Ruto ruling for 19 years is not far-fetched, given deliberate steps to amend the constitution. Yet history shows why limiting presidential terms was a hard-won battle to prevent autocratic rule.

To better understand Kenya’s current political dynamics, my latest book, The Ruto You Don’t Know, offers an in-depth analysis of the president’s rise and strategies. This highly sensitive audiobook and eBook provide insights into Ruto’s decision-making processes and what lies ahead for the country.

The lessons of Kenya’s past—such as Moi’s tenure and his eventual rise from vice president to president—serve as a stark reminder of how political power can shape the nation’s destiny. Understanding these historical parallels is essential to navigating the present and predicting the future.
