The Kenyan presidential motorcade is more than just a convoy of vehicles; it’s a highly intricate operation involving around 20 vehicles and over 100 personnel, all dedicated to one mission: ensuring the president’s safety. From the moment the president leaves State House to the time they return, strict and detailed security protocols are observed.
On September 13, 2022, then-President Uhuru Kenyatta left State House for the swearing-in ceremony of William Ruto as Kenya's fifth president. Outside State House, the motorcade was ready, led by a Mercedes-Maybach S600 Pullman Guard in a formation known as the "spearhead" or "arrowhead," designed for easy maneuvering and maximum security during potential attacks.
At the core of the motorcade is the president’s vehicle, which varies according to the sitting president's preference. President Kenyatta used the armored Maybach S600 Pullman Guard on his final day in office, while President Ruto opted for an equally fortified Toyota Land Cruiser. Both vehicles are more than luxury cars; they are heavily armored mobile fortresses designed to withstand terrorist attacks and high-powered ballistics.
The Maybach offers ballistic protection of level B7, capable of resisting armor-piercing bullets and explosive fragments. It features run-flat tires, a self-sealing fuel tank, a fire extinguishing system, and an independent oxygen supply for protection against biological threats. The vehicle costs approximately KES 100 million (USD 1 million).
Similarly, Ruto's Toyota Land Cruiser combines security with comfort. It provides 360-degree protection against explosives and high-powered rifles. Equipped with heavy-duty brakes and a fire suppression system, it ensures maximum safety on the move.
The motorcade includes more than just the president’s vehicle. There are decoy cars—two armored vehicles identical to the president's—positioned nearby to confuse potential attackers. Additional components include an armored Toyota Land Cruiser Jammer, which neutralizes explosive devices and detects anti-tank missiles.
Leading the convoy is the "brain car," which guides the entire motorcade and acts as a buffer. Surrounding the convoy are outriders on motorcycles, also known as sweepers. These officers clear the road, form a protective ring, and serve as the first line of defense in case of an attack.
Every member of the presidential escort undergoes rigorous training, including a two-month defensive driving course. Drivers of the president’s vehicles must complete advanced driving courses to handle high-risk scenarios.
The presidential motorcade is essentially a mobile, armored State House designed to safeguard the president and their entourage in any situation. It’s a complex operation with contingencies for every possible threat, embodying the seriousness of protecting Kenya's head of state.
