How to face lions without fear

 

The story of Daniel in the lion's den is one of the most well-known accounts in the Bible, found in Daniel 6. It is a powerful tale of faith, divine protection, and God's sovereignty.

Context:

Daniel was a Jewish exile in Babylon, serving under King Nebuchadnezzar and later King Darius. He was known for his wisdom, faithfulness to God, and upright character. As a result, he gained favor in the eyes of the kings he served. By the time of King Darius, Daniel was one of the three high officials who governed over the kingdom, and he was distinguished by an exceptional spirit and integrity.

The Plot Against Daniel:

Daniel's exceptional abilities and high rank made him a target for jealousy. The other officials and satraps (regional governors) who served under King Darius conspired against him because they could not find any fault or corruption in his leadership. They realized that the only way to trap Daniel was to attack his faith in God.

The Decree:

The conspirators approached King Darius and convinced him to issue a decree that for 30 days, no one could pray to any god or human except the king himself. This decree was designed to catch Daniel, who regularly prayed to the God of Israel. The penalty for violating the decree was to be thrown into a den of lions. Darius, not realizing the malicious intent behind the request, signed the decree.

Daniel's Response:

Despite the new law, Daniel continued his practice of praying three times a day, facing Jerusalem. He was not afraid of the consequences and remained faithful to his God. The conspirators, seeing Daniel's defiance of the king's decree, immediately reported him to Darius.

Darius' Dilemma:

King Darius was distressed upon learning that Daniel had violated the decree. He valued Daniel and tried to find a way to save him, but the law of the Medes and Persians could not be revoked once it had been signed. So, despite his reluctance, Darius had Daniel arrested and thrown into the lion's den.

God's Intervention:

As Daniel was cast into the den, King Darius expressed hope that Daniel's God would deliver him. The stone was rolled over the entrance, and Darius returned to his palace, fasting and unable to sleep. At dawn, he rushed to the lion’s den and called out to Daniel, fearing the worst. To his astonishment, Daniel answered, declaring that God had sent an angel to shut the mouths of the lions, protecting him from harm.

The Outcome:

King Darius was overjoyed and ordered Daniel to be lifted out of the den. He then issued a new decree, commanding that all people in his kingdom should fear and reverence the God of Daniel, acknowledging His power to deliver from death. The conspirators who had plotted against Daniel were subsequently thrown into the den, where they were killed by the lions.
